      10 grams of protein bar- Kroger Protein bar. 6 in a pack for 1.99. You eat 6 that's 60 grams of protein. You're going to burn at least 3 grams of sugar. At 190 calories each your burning 30% of the calories. Perfect for cheat days and much cheaper.

      Depends on weight. When you have a bar of 50g , 15g of protein is just enough. On the other hand, I don't get "protein bars" that have the same or similarly high fat content as protein content...

    I stumbled upon your channel 3 days ago and since then I've watched about 40-50 (total...so far) of your videos at night after everyone else goes to bed. I saw a comment on one of your other videos that said watching your videos is like binge watching your favorite shows on Netflix and I completely agree! Your videos are so fun to watch and you learn helpful stuff along the way. I've just started out on the eating better/healthier/cleaner road for health reasons (fatty liver) and I love how you help everyone learn about food but you don't throw it at you and make it overwhelming and harder to learn. Thanks for all of the amazingly helpful/fun videos! -The Nox aka Alyssa

    I wish I could stand eating Quest bars because my mom gave me 2 dozen because she could not stand them either. They taste like nothing but a spoonful of artificial sweetener to me, especially stevia. I carry them around in my purse as emergency snacks/meals when I want to avoid eating something out of sheer desperation. I just don't understand how anyone could find these a treat! I would like them better if they were less sweet. I tried baking one and it was a decent cookie consistency but still overpowering taste of stevia. Yuck.

      I know the feeling, I had heard so much about quest bars and then I finally found a place where I could get them (I live in the Netherlands and they aren't as common here) but when I took the first bite I thought I was eating a disgusting combination of pure protein powder and water, yuck. but luckily I found a different brand that does work for me!

      I have been powering through them as emergency snacks and have gotten used to them. Alyssia's tip to bake them makes the brownie one pretty yummy. I recently tried the chocolate cookie dough and find them to be much better. They are good snacks to carry in my purse for when I need something healthy to tide me over when I am not home.

      I'm glad I read this comment!! lol I was going to buy 2 boxes. Out of the ones that were shown and I have tried, Cliffs builder taste the best. 270 calories, 20 grams of protein, for a meal replacement -- its perfect. Kind is really good, but low in protein, but the natural stuff is my taste preference.

    Ingesting natural sugars from dates and healthy fats from cashews (in my opinion) should not be compared to manufactured sugar/manufactured artificial sweeteners and unhealthy fats. It is NOT the same thing and it shouldn't be considered as "bad" if used in moderation.I believe Larabars are good because they are a clean, less ingredients and are sweetened with natures sugars and has healthyfats which is perfectly fine. I don't use Larabars as a protein bar choice. More so as a healthy snack choice, but I strongly have to disagree with you that it's a "bad" bar.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  7 років тому +42

      I'm not comparing the quality of ingredients here- I note that quality should be considered in our personal choices. The point of this video is to differentiate a PROTEIN bar from any other kind of bar/energy bar/bar that claims to be a protein bar that isn't.

    • @LuvinLyfe052
      @LuvinLyfe052 7 років тому +30

      +Mind Over Munch Larabars don't claim to be a protein bar or energy bar.. It says on the package it is a fruit and nut bar. It happens to be a source of energy due to the ingredients, but I never took it as an "energy" or "protein" bar. The way u were speaking about it was as tho they are misrepresenting themselves & making "health claims" that aren't true as you said. I respectfully disagree. Although I wouldn't suggest people eat multiple larabars in one day or even eat them everyday (unless u have an active lifestyle), I do think it's a healthy packaged alternative snack food (which btw is hard to find for us health conscious people) so I guess I wasn't a fan of them being put in the "bad category" and to compare them to protein bars. That's not what they are. At least not the bars I have eaten of theirs. Sometimes people jus want a quick clean snack on the go. I wouldn't deter people from this product (perhaps except the flavor u tried! lol). We need more snacks like that on the market tho, so I support it. If u ever try it again try the gingerbread. It's fab.

    If this is supposed to be a video about health, I think you are making a big mistake: you are focusing on quantity rather than quality, which has little to do with health. The amount of calories, grams of protein, carbs is not as important as the actual kind of ingredients that go in a bar. 10g of sugar from refined sugar is a completely different thing than 10g of sugar from fruit. 10g of carbs from white flour is completely different than 10g of carbs from whole grains. 10g of fat from oil is completely different from 10g of fat from nuts. By focusing on number of calories and macro-nutrients you are missing the most important health factor in these bars, and might be misleading people.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  8 років тому +27

      +vappole This is a great point! I do note the quality of ingredients for some of these bars is far superior, but the point of this video is to help people understand that those bars are not necessarily providing protein as they claim they do. Cheers

  • @amandatadd4954
    @amandatadd4954 7 років тому +10

    Not hating:) just my opinion though that bars should never replace food. I think they should be treated as an occasional treat or "emergency" purse food. While I agree they do taste good, as a society many of us think of them as a MUST (along with protein powder) in order to build muscle or lose weight or whatever health goal you have. People use them as a convenient source of food after a workout because of the "anabolic window" which really is not a thing. Just wait till you get home & eat some real food IMO :) your body will be able to use it better anyways. I appreciate the work you do to educate people about making good choices! :)

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  7 років тому +4

      Totally agree, supplements in general should be treated as that- a supplement! Not a replacement :) If someone struggles to get that protein intake, then they can be a good option, but most people shouldn't need them.

      An organic ,raw,vegan,protein bar is not something different from the food that the average person would eat at home.Contrary may be even healthier.I want to say that organic ,raw,vegan,protein bars are not responsible for the percentage of population that are in obesity or overweighted level.Other foods are.Anyway bars ar useful when you travel,in hurry,want to avoid junk food,after the gym when you do not have the possibility to go home soon enough and of course when you forget to take fruits and nuts with you.(first priority)

    However, I have to pinpoint something regarding your words on brown rice syrup: it's a sweetener, but it's not equivalent to regular sugar as you say. It has some minerals and vitamins where sugar as none and, despite equal number of calories (is carb we're talking after all), the GI is waaaaay lower, which is what makes it a way healtier chose than regular sugar, not the best, but way better.
    That said, it should never been first on the ingredient list

    • @Pure_117
      @Pure_117 5 років тому +2

      @Marco You got your facts mixed up, its actually higher in calories than normal sugar, it's also ONLY around 50-70% as sweet as normal sugar AND it has a higher GI. Also the vitamin and minerals it has is very little for what it has to offer than it might as well not even count

    • @maggierose97

    I'm just like putting this out there that if your having a protein bar after a work out calories are good for u.. Good snacks/ protein bars should have 200 to 250 calories....

    This video was really helpful, even though you have your obvious favourites it's good that you provide information about the other bars and what are absolutely not healthy but ones that are just not as protein bars.
    I'd be really interested if you did another video like this but for the other types of bars like energy bars and which ones are the best to pick.

    I liked this video until you dissed the larabar. I know it's not a protein bar, but of all the bars you talked about why try to tell people it isn't healthy. it literally has like 5 ingredients in it and its all natural foods. So on the label it looks like a lot of sugar but its all natural sugar and natural carbs that are in the dates and nuts... No one needs to be scared of larabars.
    On a side note, the first time I tried a larabar i had the same reaction but if you take a few more bites and just realize that its mainly nuts and dates it tastes so much better. Of course it won't taste like those chocolate covered protein bars but that's because it doesn't have all those gross ingredients either. They are my favorite now.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  9 років тому +5

      lesley7x I personally didn't enjoy the Larabar's taste, but my "diss" for this video is only relevant because I'm sharing that it is not a protein bar, and many people are confused in thinking it is. The point of including Larabar (which I did address had very few ingredients) was to show that it contains more fat and carbohydrates than protein, so it is not the best choice for a protein bar specifically- It doesn't mean that it can't be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle. Thanks for watching!

    :/ in protein bars you should be looking for what kind of source of protein it is from, many bars are useless because it's soy base protein which will lower testosterone and not provide and benefit. Also what is more important then the calories is carb to protein ratio, also you can eat bars with 300+ calories depending on how active you're and how intense the workout was. I am 13 and I eat like 3000 calories a day or more sometimes (HEALTHY FOODS). ALSO YOU WANT WHEY AND MILK PROTEIN (check in ingredients). If you see corn syrup or any artificial baloney DROP THE BAR.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  5 років тому +1

      thank you! This video definitely needs to be updated :) Epic bars are good! I've only tried the meat bars which are cleaner options to get protein instead of carbs... I will say some of them are a tad salty (and the high sodium reflects that on the label) but I keep them around when I do Whole30 :) I do like the Epic brand overall and think they are creating quality foods with some great alternatives to processed crap.

    Wooh, thanks a bunch for this! I've been struggling with justifying the high price of quest bars (I live in Sweden, so they're only imported) but after seeing this video I can finally allow myself to indulge in them again :D And it feels really good to have some guidelines for what to avoid :)

      +korobeinikitypeA absolutely! So glad you found the video useful. I know protein bars, especially higher quality ones, can be expensive- that's why I treat them as a "post workout" treat or meal and I don't just eat them willy nilly as a snack :)

    When should protein bars be eaten? In the morning or at night? Pre workout or post workout?

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  8 років тому +1

      +Anna c Well remember, protein bars are just a supplement. They are there to "supplement" protein when you can't get enough from whole foods. It doesn't really matter when you eat them, it's pretty much the same question as "when should I eat protein?" I try to eat protein throughout the day, morning, before and after workout, and at night. I prefer to eat my protein bars post workout because they are expensive and mentally I justify them as being a "reward" or treat for working out, but it won't make a difference to my body whether I'm eating a protein bar or another protein source. Does that make sense?

      I have! I really love the multi purpose powder because it isn't sweet at all so I can sweeten it as I like, a lot of times I find protein powders to be too sweet for my taste. Their chocolate is also quite good. My boyfriend loves the banana and salted caramel flavor powders too :)

    Hi Alyssia, I liked very much your video. Thanks for putting it together :)
    I have a question though, when you were comparing the nutritional facts among the bars - did you consider the serving size? If yes, thanks for clarifying. If not, wouldn't be misleading to compare them as is?
    Thanks for your reply.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  8 років тому

      +Fanny G Thank you! It is not misleading because we are still comparing all macros and calories. It is true, if a bar is "2 servings" then this would make a difference in how much you would consume, but the macros per serving are still the same. We are just comparing the macros per "serving" :) Cheers

    Thanks for doing alot of the research for us! You mentioned not being thrilled about the Sucralose in the Pure Protein bar (I think that was the one), but don't most of the varieties of Quest bars contain Sucralose in addition to Stevia? That's the main reason I haven't tried them yet is because I'm trying to stay away from artificial sweeteners.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  7 років тому

      Yes that is true, but there are some Quest bars that only use stevia or erythritol and don't use sucralose, just have to check because each flavor is different :)
