    Hi, dietetics university student here. If you’re a Canadian viewer this doesn’t apply to you! In Canada we have different regulations as to what’s considered “whole wheat.” In order for the entire wheat kernels bran, endosperm, and germ to be intact, it must be labeled “whole grain.” Whole wheat products usually have some of the germ and bran removed. This is beneficial in the sense that it may prevent your bread from going stale quicker (the removed germ contains unsaturated fat, which is unstable/causes bread to go rancid quicker). However, by removing a portion of the bran and germ, some of the dietary fibre and micronutrients are removed! So make sure you buy 100% whole grain. And as mentioned in the video, always check the ingredient lists in order to obtain a “cleaner” bread.

      I think when looking for good cereal we're suppose to look for whole grain as the first main ingredient as well

    This is so helpful because I hate salads so I often have sandwiches instead and cram as many vegetables in them as possible, but I've heard so much about bread being unhealthy that I worried I wasn't actually doing myself any good by eating bread everyday. However, it's reassuring to know that there are healthy (or at least healthier) bread options and I can still enjoy my sandwiches and feel good about it.

    I think my favorite part of this video is actually the very confused looks on people's faces as they pass you in the bread aisle...

    I have been buying Brownberry Sandwich Thins healthy multi grain. First ingredient is whole wheat flour....arg third is unbleached enriched wheat flour. But for my health issues this seems to be the best. Diabetes and heart disease. I am really learning so much from you. Thanks

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  9 років тому

      So the multigrain sandwich thins are a great example of a product that uses "multiple grains"- whole wheat and white. It doesn't mean they are a bad choice, it's just good to be aware that refined grains are in them :) do what works for you! So glad you're enjoying the channel, thank you!!!

      The hard part is finding one that makes us BOTH happy and that can be found. I've been looking for The Baker, so far no luck. I think we are going to have to just sit in the aisle and look at all the labels. I thank you for your dedication and knowledge!

  • @Lunaius

    I think it's also important to note that a long list of ingredients isn't always a bad thing. Some added things to the bread (like for colour) are ok but other dyes etc are not.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  7 років тому +2

      Hmm, I would personally rather eat foods that don't have colors or supplements added, and choose a more whole foods source where the breads original ingredients are providing the nutrition, rather than having to be added back in.

    buying bread had become a really pain the butt where i live, since my supermarket really only seems to sell two or three different brands and mostly being dominated by the hovis brand here in the uk. Needless to say the ingredients list is 6 years long and up until this point i only knew that you should buy wholemeal bread, not brown. Super informative video, and i'll be putting to tips to use next time i go shopping.

      But enjoyable!! I always love the bloopers at the end. I don't know how you kept your thoughts together with all the people around and the intercom going off. Lol

      @MindOverMunch  10 років тому

      ***** Haha it was a struggle... there were so many bloopers where we were just cut off because of the intercom or people around! Just couldn't show them all. A market really is an obnoxious place to film! So glad you enjoy the bloopers! Thanks again!

    Really good info. I do the same, i thought i was the only one doing that. my husband bugs me because i take long and i am constantly reading the nutrition labels before i buy anything. But hey, he cant complain because he is loosing weight.

      Maria Garcia that's great! Yes, it is annoying that it takes so long to read the label, but these companies don't make it easy! It's like they don't WANT us to know what's in the food lol...

    Before this no-junk-food challenge, I wasn't aware how many sugar sources were in my bread. I need a new bread. I do enjoy my slice of toast each morning. I've eaten Udi's for years because it tasted good, had flavor options (all are tasty) was low in calories, doable carb grams, and gluten-free. I didn't look at much else. Now I'm wanting to eat cleaner. Time to go searching the gluten-free bread options.

    Wow what an informative video on bread! Now that I know what kind of bread I should be looking out for, can you make a video on the type of deli meats that would be a healthier option to make a sandwich?! If you already have a video that discusses this topic you can refer me to that too 😊Thanks!

    Can you give me some advice about Almond Milk? I know the best way would be to make my own, but it is not very practical. I don't mind cooking and preparing anything, but the milk I think is way easier buying it. However, I would like to know the best option between the brands in the market. Now I use the Full Circle Almond Milk. What do you think about this brand or which one do you recommend? Thank you!

    This video is amazing!!! After watching under spent a good half hour reading the bread labels. Lol Also I had no idea how to read labels in general so this haloed me out a TON!!! Ever since I only get the healthiest I can find. Thank you so much. Sucks tho because my Walmart does not carry Ezekiel bread. 😢 but thank you. These small changes help the body overtime. Atleast I would hope. Lol

    I was just recently able to find an okay whole wheat bread where I live. Wheat is not grown in many places in this country and so whole wheat bread is rare. The bread I was able to find is STILL not the best as it has less than 4g of fiber per slice even though it cost twice as much as regular bread. I miss the breadbasket of the states!
