    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
Hey, I could really use your help.
If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”
    www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G
    Thanks!
    - Dr. Bill
p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at:
    lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm
Take care and love to you all.
    :)

Dr Bill; you are my HERO. I just had my first signing with ASL people!!! I have been waiting and searching for an opportunity for over a year; have thought about posting online in my area, to see if anyone would sign with me. Well, a Good Friday it is. I was on my way to Starbucks (unusual for me) and because of Good Friday they said the drive through was closed (I had phoned ahead of time). So, I was in the car with my friend and as we parked, I saw a lady signing. I got SOooo excited (probably too excited) and asked my friend if it would be rude to try communicating with a few of them. My friend seemed to think it could possibly be rude, but, because of what I have learned about the deaf community, I decided to try it. I went to the counter and asked the Starbucks employee if he knew the group that was there. Then I turned around and saw that there were about 15 people in the group! The barista didn't know much about them. I then saw someone catch my eye. I signed "you deaf?" and they signed back "hearing". Well holy cow. I was too excited, and signed "EXCITED!" and explained that I knew a bit of sign. They then invited me over and EVERYONE introduced themselves! ENTIRE BRAIN OVERLOAD but TOO HAPPY!! I then spent the next 20 or so minutes signing with them. I have been coveting an experience like this, as, I believe it is one thing to learn online but an entirely different thing to actually try signing with someone back and forth. The main lady couldn't believe how "good" I was, having only signed for a short period. I gave you some credit though....MUCH deserved. THANK YOU SO VERY KINDLY FOR TEACHING ME ASL. It is my favourite thing to do. I have such a strange passion for this language (given I know zero deaf/hh people). I am in 7th heaven. You are the best person. It is with great joy that I share this story and continue on my journey. Thank you.
PS only 2 people were deaf/hh, the rest were hearing folk. Probably a good ratio for my first signing experience, as, I definitely found myself signing "sorry, again" to the deaf people. I am invited to their weekly meetings. Ahhhhhhh :))

Bravo Sarah! Your effort in studying and your bravery in approaching the group has produced for you an excellent result!!!

Dr. Bill thank you for making videos about ASL. This is allowing me to learn to communicate with a new friend from church who is deaf. He is very happy to know that I am learning ASL. Thank you for your teaching. God bless.

Dearest, dearest, Dr. Bill Vicars, I hope to get a reply. You're kinda my hero.
definition of Charismatic: exercising a compelling charm which inspires devotion in others.
I should start by saying you are a wonderful teacher. you've made my learning experience so pleasant. for the longest time i have thought of learning ASL and making some type of career out of it and you are helping me along. I was diagnosed with ADHD yrs ago and ive struggled with finding a path to follow for even longer. Because of you I've found something that has kept me interested
I look forward to watching your videos everyday. you really cheer me up! and everything you've taught me is sticking. I'm watching ASL 1 and 2 right now and am almost finished watching all of them but I have been going back to old lessons and reviewing them and making video notes (where I record myself signing) I even bought a tablet so i could Download your videos off of youtube and store them on there so i can study wherever I am without internet. I wish one Day I could shake your hand and sign with you.
I have one question (and I hope you haven't been asked this 100 times) after watching ASL 1 and ASL 2, which videos do you think should be watched next?
    Sincerely Craig Thomas Mazzali

      Craig,
After watching the ASL Level 1 and 2 videos I recommend you just keep on going with the Level 3 and 4 videos -- each of which have their own playlist on my channel. Or, if you've got gobs of money (heh) you can order all four levels in .mp4 format on a USB thumbdrive called the "ASL-Super-USB" from my bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm
Then transfer them from the thumbdrive to all of your local devices.
Or if money is tight just keep approaching it the way you are. I understand totally.
Here are some practice cards for the Level 3 videos: lifeprint.com/asl101/curriculum/practice_cards_level_03.doc
Here is a sentence list for the Level 4 videos:
      lifeprint.com/asl101/curriculum/practice-sentences-level-4.htm
      Cordially,
      Dr. Bill

I've been taking all of your classes right from lesson 1, and today something strange happened. Right at the beginning, when you were discussing Thanksgiving with the students, I "heard" what you were saying. I mean that I didn't just translate each sign in my head to make sense of the sentences, I actually understood without the translation step. I had to go back and watch again to see if maybe you were mouthing the words more than usual, and maybe that was how I was "hearing" you, but no. I'm a French / Spanish teacher, and I think just like with any foreign language, this is one of the big "jumps" you make as you're learning, similar to the point when you start separating words out from a flow of unrecognizable sounds. Very strange that it should be such a sudden jump, but very neat!

Hi Dr. Bill, thank you so much for posting all your lectures! I've always been curious - how do you choose the student who is in the videos?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  7 років тому +14

Each semester I am fortunate to have around a hundred new students in my "in-person" classes at the university. The vast majority of those students are female -- particularly in "elective" courses (not required for graduation). The selection process varies. Mostly it is based on my judgment and experience from many years of teaching ASL as to which students will be a good fit. I look for students who:
      1. Seem to actually enjoy the learning process.
      2. Are punctual (able to show up on time.
      3. Are helpful. The studio classroom is shared with other teachers thus I have to do a fair amount of setup and take down of equipment, cameras, cables, tables, monitors, etc. If my assistant(s) are proactive they jump in and help set things up.
      4. Have no problem making mistakes and being corrected in front of others. They are not concerned about "looking smart" -- they are focused on learning the material and getting signing practice.
      5. Brave: It takes a lot of guts to get up there in front of the studio audience (plus knowing the video might be posted to UA-cam or Lifeprint) and be viewed by thousands of people.

Just finished lesson 30! Pah! How many signs do you estimate someone has learned after completing ASL 1 and 2?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому +2

      Katie,
      Congratulations on your progress!
Students who complete the ASLU Curriculum up through lesson 30 will generally have learned between 600 and 1000 signs or more.
      Some influencing factors:
      1. Which lessons did the student do? The free ones? The ASL.tc subscription program? The ($) documentation program requiring completion of lesson quizzes (different from the free quizzes), unit tests, a video project and a final exam?
      www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/registration.htm
      2. Did the student simply watch the main instructional videos or did the student also go to the lifeprint.com website and click on every vocabulary link and read through every vocabulary page and learn the various versions of each sign?
      www.lifeprint.com/asl101/lessons/lessons.htm
      3. Did the student use the ASLU Master Playlist?
      ua-cam.com/play/PL6akqFwEeSpiLwRFA3ZvuOWMwPXwI7NqA.html
Or did they just watch the 15 main instructional videos for each course?
      4. Did the student occasionally review earlier lessons and/or use the lesson reviews playlists at the "Signs" channel to prevent memory extinction? ua-cam.com/users/Lifeprint-signsplaylists?view=50&sort=dd&shelf_id=1
To accurately claim to have learned a sign you actually have to be able to recall that sign.
Again, good job on working your way up through lesson 30!
