    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Hey, I could really use your help.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
    A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Thanks!

    I love when I learn a new sign and then see it used "in the wild" for the first time. In this video, just in passing, you signed "food storage". Then after watching this video, I was watching the Atomic Hands channel The Secret Life of Ants and she used the sign for food storage. I was so excited. (all the more so because food storage is not a common topic of conversation.) Thanks for all your great instruction!

      That's terrific!
      You should see how excited "I" get when I learn a new sign!
      One of my (former students) current interns is now a professional interpreter and whenever we get together we for fun try to think of a sign the other hasn't seen before. She has a wonderfully unfair advantage in that she works for a video relay center and gets exposure to all sorts of little regional signs! Ha! All the better for me though because she brings them to me like little gifts.

    So, what is the difference between 1 dollar, 2 dollar vs 1st, 2nd?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому

      Google Venn diagram. See how the circles overlap?
      Similarly, some articulations (pronunciations) of the signs 1 dollar, 2 dollar vs 1st, 2nd etc. do overlap and it takes context to decide the meaning. However there are nuanced differences that can be added to the signs to disambiguate the concepts.
      It is challenging to describe in typed words the (available) differences but in brief the "numerical-incorporation dollar" signs can be done with more of a circular flourish. However just because someone "can" do the numerical-incorporation version of $1 - $9 using more movement doesn't mean that those signs can't also be done with lesson movement and look similar to 1st through 9th (thus relying on context).
      See: 1-dollar: ua-cam.com/video/sh2rTfdHORE/v-deo.html
      See:: 1st (ordinal) ua-cam.com/video/IxHcuZfsiwE/v-deo.html
      On a desktop or full-size browser (not a phone nor a tablet) try this link: ua-cam.com/users/Lifeprint-signssearch?query=first
      Then scroll down the results list and notice some of the various ways to sign "first."

    hello bill! at around 6:45 you start signing MOVIE. you sign 2 different versions with an open palm facing down hand. then you sign a third version a little after 6:50 that's a closed "fist" handshape version. however, with covid-19 I went ahead and learned some signs regarding the virus to keep up with recent news. I notice the sign for COVID (in specific, the virus name) is very similar to this version of movie! i have watched signduo and aslmeredith teach me the signs for COVID. would you suggest to stay away from that version of movie with the closed "fist" handshape because of how similar it now is to the sign for COVID? or am I signing COVID possibly wrong? I'm having a hard time seeing the differences between the closed "fist" handshape version for MOVIE and the sign for COVID.

    • @user-hg2he8fj8z
      @user-hg2he8fj8z 4 роки тому

      I'm sorry, I'm watching through my phone mirrored to the tv and the times are a little off. around 6:40 you start signing about the versions to MOVIE, and around 6:45 you add the final, 3rd version with the closed fist I am talking about

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  4 роки тому +3

      Indeed, it would be safe to stick with the more traditional versions of "MOVIE" during the pandemic or any low-context signing situations.
      Good job on noticing the similarity.
      For what it is worth though those of us who are skilled at sign language generally wouldn't mistake the fist version of MOVIE with Covid because the movement is different. MOVIE generally moves twice whereas COVID only uses a single movement.
      Sure, sometimes in high speed signing some people will drop one of the movements in an otherwise two movement sign -- but in general the two signs would not be confused by native or near native level signers if there were any amount of context and the sign MOVIE were done in its "citation" form (such as would be found in a dictionary entry for the sign -- with two movements.

    hey bill if you want to say "do you care?" would it be the same as signing "do you mind?" with the one finger coming from the nose and eyebrows up or can i sign "dont care" with eyebrows up??

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  4 роки тому +4

      CARE: If you mean “care” as in “to not mind or not care” you can use the “DON’T-CARE” sign. However if you mean “care” as in “to care about” then you can use the “CARE / concern” sign. See: ua-cam.com/video/YTtX1te20w0/v-deo.html
      If you want to ask “Do you care?” - There are quite a few different ways to express the concept of “do you care” including:
      YOU CONCERN YOU?
      THAT IMPORTANT YOU?
      IX-“it” BOTHER YOU?
      IX-“it” IMPORTANT YOU?
      don’t-CARE YOU?
      If you ask someone if they "don't care" they can respond by stating some sort of statement that they care:
      I CONCERN. (I care!)
      I THINK IMPORTANT! (It's important to me.)
      Or they can affirm that they don't care:
      I don't-CARE
      WHATEVER ME. (It doesn't matter to me.)

      If I recall right, Kasandra holds the distinction of having been the youngest female to become a pilot in California.
      She is also a hero in terms of overcoming adversity. Check out her profile:
      Kasandra Satrapa:
      In the Spring of 2012, I took my second Bikram yoga class, and appreciated the first challenge it offered me to stay in the room for the full 90 minutes. I hadn’t yet discovered the magical healing benefits of the backbends of the 26+2 sequence, but was privileged to enjoy the other countless benefits once I had the opportunity to pursue it as a second form of physical therapy.
      I had just battled and conquered a rare life threatening illness, a type of Encephalitis which can attack the brain and/or spinal cord causing rapid physical and/or mental digression interrupting my studies of American Sign Language (ASL) in 2011. I was temporarily unable to walk without assistance, operate one side of my body or see and hear the world around me accurately. After extensive therapies, included but not limited to heavy steroid treatment, the Encephalitis I fought was resolved within a few months hospital stay. After restarting my yoga practice with some private lessons, and smaller sized traditional non-heated yoga classes, I was ready to step inside the hot room again. I observed that the more I came to class, the more quickly my central nervous system seemed to allow my senses of sound, sight and touch to normalize, my pre-existing anxiety became manageable, the strength lost on one side of my body returned, and my pharmacy was eventually completely replaced by practicing this sequence regularly.
      Now, I use this practice to give myself daily peace of mind that the body is functioning, and I get to discover how with acceptance each day. The Bikram yoga method systematically allows the opportunity to work every part of the body. That fact inspired me to spread the countless healing benefits to others by completing RYS 200 Yoga Alliance teacher training in the spring of 2016, and I began instructing during the summer of that year. Mostly because of Bikram yoga, I was able to return to Sac State, to pick where I’d left off. I completed the coursework to earn a BA in Deaf Studies in December of 2016. I had indeed worked a bit throughout my recovery teaching piano lessons, however, now I have the career goal of improving Deaf access to yoga by joining a company which provides yoga instruction to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. However, for the time being I’m just taking life day by day, discovering the blessings the hot room can bring to me and others as a student and instructor.
