American Sign Language (ASL) taught by Dr. Bill Vicars who is Deaf/hh. He holds an earned doctorate (accredited) in Deaf Studies from Lamar University in Texas and teaches Deaf Studies and ASL full-time (as of this post) as an tenured full-Professor at a major four-year state university.) I want to say thank you, Bill. Our daughter is deaf and the resources you provide have been a tremendous help in learning ASL. She is a year and a half now and I am still learning as much as I can. I thought I missed Katelyn but I'm really liking Sarah now.
My TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) prof said the best way to become a better language teacher is to take a language class. I'm definitely finding that since I started these lessons, my teaching has improved. I'm slowing down more for my students, assuming nothing, explaining or acting out everything. So thank you for rubbing off on me in my own classroom.

Both Disneyland and dentist have multiple variations.
None of the variations precisely line up. Sorry.
The version you are thinking of (D on the chin) is different in the movement.
Disneyland twists the D.
Dentist taps the D.
But, yah, that would be rather a big let down (to end up at the dentist's office when you thought you were going to Disneyland!

When he asked her if she changed a diaper before, what did she sign back? I didn't quite get it
Tip: When you ask questions like that, it is helpful if you include a time code so others can more readily find the section to which you are referring.

At first Sarah misunderstood the question. She thought I was asking if and/or how often she changes her underwear. She replied that she did every day. I clarified that I wasn't asking about underwear but rather "changing a diaper." She laughed at her own mistake and indicated the sign for "have" and a negative head shake (as in "I don't have a baby").
I know you are SUPER busy trying to keep up with all these 10,000 comments and requests and what not - But can I please make a request please? I haven't check all your vids yet - BUT I want to learn "Tenses of Verbs" - such as - "I run, I ran, I will run" Past, Present, Future. Can you teach me please?? I greatly appreciate it.
Time Concepts: Dealing with time:
In English a person might say, "I went to a movie last Saturday." Or, maybe "Last Saturday I went to a movie." Notice how the concept of "go" is expressed as "went?" This is called "conjugating" the verb to show tense. (Conjugate is just a big word that means "change" or "join.") Another word for conjugate is "inflect."
In ASL that sentence would be signed "PAST SATURDAY ME-(PRO1) GO MOVIE." (The "PRO1" means a first person pronoun, which is done by simply pointing at yourself with an index finger.) We use the same form of the concept "GO" for both present and past tense sentences. That is the way it is with most ASL sentences. We establish the "tense" or time-frame of a sentence by using certain "time signs" like "past week," "next month," "now morning," or "next year," and then the rest of the sentence uses typical non-conjugated signs. This technique works for whole paragraphs and/or conversations. Tense only needs to be established once at the beginning of an ASL conversation. All of the remaining signs use the same form regardless whether you are talking about the past, present, or future. For example, in the sentence, "TOMORROW ME-(PRO1) GO MOVIE" uses the same sign for "GO" as the sentence, "YESTERDAY ME GO MOVIE."
Now note, that the interpretation of "NOW AFTERNOON ME-(PRO1) GO MOVIE" depends on what time of day it is. If it is morning, then the sentence would be the equivalent of, "This afternoon I will go to a movie." If it is currently night time, the sentence would be interpreted as, "Today I went to a movie." The ASL signs are the same, but their meaning depends on what time of day the sentence is being signed.

really random but are the signs for "sign" (as in ASL) and "sign" (as in stop sign) the same???
They are different.
For stop sign you show the ASL sign for STOP and then you do a really fast, sloppy perimeter outline of a stop sign with your index fingertips. Do not expect "STOP-SIGN" to be a standard sign though since it is fairly rare that any of us actually sign it.
Also the basic sign for a signage display type sign is to just draw a rectangle in the air.

That sign at 16:17 generally refers to "two people having the same thought." The handshape and movement involves the reciprocal sending of signals. The location near the brain adds the meaning of "mental" signals.

Just a question Dr. Bill, Where do you teach at?
I have taught ASL workshops in a wide variety of settings including community centers, the IRS, Hill Air Force Base, Morton International, Defense Depot Ogden Utah, Mills Montessori School, Newgate Mall, The YCC of Ogden, Clearfield Community Schools, Davis County School District, Weber County School District, Ogden City Corporation, rest homes, group homes, non-profit organizations, libraries, hospitals, The Sign Language Studio, The Sign Language Association, Weber State University, Lamar University, and dozens of other places including Guyana, South America, and Singapore.
My day job for many years was as a tenured, full-time, full professor of American Sign Language at California State University Sacramento.
I separated from CSU Sacramento during the pandemic and now mainly teach online from my home.
