Melatonin, otherwise known as the 'sleep hormone' can be very helpful for many common diseases of our dogs and cats.

Excellent information! Thank you! One thing I've discovered over the years is that some of the chewable and flavored melatonin tablets may contain artificial sweeteners. We know that xylitol is toxic to dogs, so you'll want to read the label. Some peanut butter products also contain xylitol instead of sugar.
I think my dog has Cushing's. The Vet wants to do a test. The test itself is very expensive and I know the treatment for Cushing's is expensive too and also toxic. Melatonin seems like a dream come true and I'm going to start using it. I appreciate you and your videos and want to thank you for sharing your expertise with us.

which Melatonin should I have? My vet in the Netherlands advises not to use it because it is not an animal medicine. But no one can help me with my Pomerianan's coat/skin problems, I've been at it for years. There are other vets in the Netherlands who advise it. is the brand of Melatonin 1mg from Now Foods any good? or another brand that you can buy in the Netherlands? of course there should be no xylitol in it.
Thank you for this Dr Jones, it sounds like it will be very helpful for my 5 year old Bichon Frise who barks like crazy when we leave her, especially when we are on holiday in our caravan. I wonder if you wouldn't mind giving me some advice please. My 8 year old Old English Sheepdog had to have emergency surgery in March to remove her spleen as she was bleeding internally and her spleen was very enlarged. Our vet said if we hadn't brought her to him when we did she would have been dead by morning. Ever since then she has been on and off anti-biotics, having temperatures like recently of 105°F and going off her food. She improves and then no sooner has she finished her anti-biotics and she's unwell again. I understand the spleen deals with the immune system and that the bone marrow takes over when the spleen is removed but when will it fully start working? Can you recommend any foods or supplements to help build her immunity up again please? My vet has given us a liquid multi-vitamin enriched with iron which has cured her anaemia but I would really appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you Dr. Andrew for this video! This proves what I did was right, I gave my boy dog melatonin when he had Cushing's, it did slow it down some. If he had been diagnosed more quickly, (due to the vet testing for everything else.. diabetes etc. Everything but the most obvious) it wouldn't have progressed to wear his muscles were atrophying to no return...(before diagnosed) I believe it would have did the trick. I put him on melatonin myself after some research, I will say it did make him more comfortable until the end. Blessings💝

I have a Siberian Husky who can be a bit of a grump. He needs his dew claws clipping and everytime I take him to the vets he needs to be sedated. To cut things short, they gave me a ridiculous estimate today to sedate and clip nails... Could I use Melatonin to help him sleep and cut the nails myself?

@@munmunsharma5427I don’t see how melatonin would help sedate your dog. Melatonin aids in helping to fall asleep sooner and or improving sleep but it doesn’t involuntarily put you to sleep.
Doc, if I let my dog have this melatonin how long does he/she will be asleep? Because we will be the one who'll drain the aural hematoma and we cannot do it because my dog is super hyper and I am planning to use sleeping pills so that we can extract it..

We have a rescue cat from the streets he has come home sick 2 times in the last month he has lost the 5lbs that he gained after his rescue last May. He is showing signs n symptoms of being poisoned by someone. He needs a bath he sleeps n hasn’t bathed himself just recently started eating again slowly in drinking water.
He smells of death like dying from the inside out I’m familiar with this smell former caregiver.
We want to help him get well but also don’t want to stress him out or hurt him.
We don’t have the money to take him to the vet yet.
He is a loving cat tolerant of dogs loves his privacy n space.
We have created a very private space for him we love him in want him to live and we don’t want to lose him it breaks my heart to see an amazing loving cat this sick he is truly loving to us and shows signs of being abused by being on the streets .

a question about the cbd oil for cat seizers. I am giving 22mg of phenobarbitol every 12 hours to control seizers in a 13 pound 10 year old cat. Should i give him 0.5mg of cbd every 12 hours or 5.0mg every 12 hours? Thanks
Hi- standard dose is .1mg/10lbs twice daily, but can be dramatically increased with no real side effects. I would start at .5mg dose

My 10lb Westie-Shu, just swallowed one of my 5mg Melatonin, It's 1/2 quick release, 1/2 time release, so I was freaking out, crying, thinking he's going to die. He's only 14 months tomorrow. I'm not quite as worried. I expect he will sleep a lot tomorrow. I will call the vet in the morning.

great information Thank you! ...Im gonna try the melatonin for my 15yr old dachshund Lucy....she is very restless at night....I take it for myself and it helps me..so maybe it will help her. Im giving her the one I take by Natural Factors...ingredients look ok w/ no artificial sweeteners. Half a tab is 1.5mg so will cut it down to a bit less. She is about 13-14lbs.

A year and a half ago, someone brought me a very matted, dirty stray to groom so he would look his best and find him a forever home... I’m a foster failure 😓🤦🏽♀️ and Pepper never left my house and he looks just like Tula! But I don’t know what breed he is...I have looked at different breed information sites and came up with cesky terrier but I’m not sure if that is the right breed. The reason I want to know is because I want to know what his breed is prone to which heAlth issues as he gets older so I can be proactive about it. So far he’s very healthy and I want to keep him that way as possible as I can.

How much would i give to my 16lb dog and how long before i leave him for a few hours. my dog barks alot and sometimes destroys things . my vet gave me some medicine and it just drugged him to the point he coulnt walk straight which scared me so i wont give it to him even a tiny piece gave him trouble so i told vet i wont be giving it to him it made him high. tried another and it did nothing so when i saw this i want to try it i use it for myself at night so i have in the house i have it in a dropper bottle and fast melts. drops are 1mg and the fast melts are 3mg .

My kitty was born in March 2018. She was found with 4 babies and no mom in the woods. My friend nursed them vetted them and gave them to good homes. I got one which I adore. She has been spayed. But all she wants to do is eat. All the time. I was concerned so I started Google up looking. I just can't afford a vet right at this time. I was feed her nothing but kibble. So I switched to wet food and dry food. She still eats and eats. I want her to eat healthy so I bought wet food called Solid Gold I heard that was a good wet food to give her. I'm worried is it psychology, (mentally) or is it physical? Hello doc. My dog have a very big wound around his face(totally losses his face fur) and neck, starting to lose hair, I think it a hot spot, I have tried every medication at home (we can’t afford vet) our dog is an aspin (asong pinoy). Several years ago, I had a miniature poodle who was 15 and developed dementia. She would stare at the cabinets and wag her tail for hours and could no longer navigate corners. My veterinarian at the time prescribed Gingko. I went and picked some up thinking why would a flower work on dementia but it did! She lived happily for 2 more years with no signs of dementia. He said it helps clean out the liver, so I took one in the morning and felt like I could move mountains all day.

Body can start relying on treatment and not produce it naturally. So I've heard.
Allegedly the body produces less as you get older anyway. I take it for fibromyalgia ( poor sleeping) and have done for years. So if my natural supply is diminishing cannot see why it is not a good idea. Same for animals. My white M.Coon who is nearly 8 is losing hair on her legs, I am going to try it. White cats seem to have itching problems.

I put it in with his food and use broth and crushed up freeze dried all natural wild caught fish or rabbit and mixed with water in the food and he doesn’t have a clue😂 hope it helps
Amazon has freeze dried pure minnows or rabbit or anything and I put it with broth or water. The broth should be bone broth or just meat broth without so many additives

Sorry but I have given my dog melatonin according to her weight without having to risk overdosing her. It does not work! She is supposed to be a lap dog to being with and she ended up not being one. But melatonin does not work
