I flew with two cats recently. Southwest had the friendliest and most affordable option for pet travel. Try to choose an early morning or late night flight. When checking in with the TSA, make sure to get a private room for screening. Talk to your vet about anti anxiety meds. Carry pee pads with you, feliway spray, and plenty of treats. :)

I work for TSA and I'm the designated cat person on my shift. If you are at all worried about your cat escaping or biting please ask for a private screening. Generally it is a quiet room where you can remove the cat from the carrier, sit quietly with your cat while the TSA officer then screens the carrier and you can put your cat back.

I moved from Argentina to Portugal with a 7 y/ old cat(21 hours in total). I have to say preparation before was everything. We tested all possible natural calmers for cats before leaving and at the end the Rescue remedy drops were the ones that work best for her. For 6 months ahead of the trip we used to take her on walks around the block in the carrier and give her a big reward afterwards. This is a cat that would always meow in any car drive, yet in the flight she was better behaved than most humans on the plane! not a single meow. Good luck to everyone out there trying to move with their cats, keep in mind that if you do the homework before departure you'll be calmer, and your cat will follow :)

@@ginnymarch Mine only made it to 20 when he got mouth cancer. I kept saying to the vet his breath "smells like warmed over death". I had him boarded and she told me the truth. After I went in, with an emergency appointment, the vet finally admitted he had mouth cancer and probably only days to live. I fed him his favorite food (salmon with a tarragon butter baste), IV hydration, lowered his seizure medications (maybe too much), and warned the home euthanasia vet he may not have long. He gobbled down his food for three days but on day fourth he did not want it. I bathed him, he used to hate water but seem relieved. I spent the night with him wrapped in blanket in my arms as I lay on the couch. In the morning I laid him down. I went to sleep. A couple hours later a was awoken. He had a seizure but was not recovered. I took him to an emergency vet who gave him a pain killer and made "the call". I spent most of the day with him in my backyard until he was "put down", in my arms, as the sunset began. It was summer, August, years ago. He always loved laying in the sunlight.

Gingerbread was an awesome cat and my baby girl. She was diagnosed with FIV at 2 years old. Every once in awhile she would present with her eyes weeping but I would would clean them out with saline solution. She would have sneezing fits but it would go away. I fed her pate food with a tad bit of warm water. She couldn't eat any kind of fish or she would throw up. Until the last day she seemed healthy but she started to throw up bile and pooping it uncontrollably. The vet said she was in liver and kidney failure. As much as it broke my heart I had to let her go. She was my heart.

    A few tips:
    1) As he says, you have THE RIGHT to take your cat out of the carrier for inspection in a closed room. Insist on it, and be sure to be early enough for any delay. The TSA person might not know it is your right, so you may have to explain, but it is.
    2) Especially for international moves, come EXTRA EARLY, have all the paperwork handy, print out the rules about taking a pet to the new country, and if possible, have a contact number where you're going. Many US airline workers have never booked a pet internationally before. I've had a couple people (at United) try to refuse to book my cat even though she was preapproved with the airline and had all her paperwork in order. Once after an hour of arguing, I had to call the Quarantine Bureau in Shanghai, where a woman kindly stayed late at work to try to explain to the person at the counter that yes, all my paperwork was complete and correct.
    3) If possible, get your cat used to a soft underseat carrier and a hard carrier, because depending on where you go, you may only be able to use one or the other. A lot of foreign airlines will only take cats in cargo, but other airlines will only allow them under the seat.
I've flown with my cat multiple times (Shanghai to Michigan, Michigan to Shanghai, Shanghai to Ohio, Indiana to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to Beijing) and she's come through it well, both when traveling in cargo and under the seat, even though she has a pretty difficult personality. Good luck to you and your cat too!

Something that has helped my two cats with traveling (near and far) is an appropriately sized playpen. It fits both their soft-sided carriers (with beds inside), a top-hole litter box, their bowls and water, and enough height to stand on their back paws and stretch. I also got a soft, round, foldable rug that fits perfectly inside, and I never wash it so it will continue to smell like them. They love playing in it when it is set up at home. They feel comfortable in a strange bedroom or hotel room inside their own familiar space with room to move around but still feel safe. I don't let them out into the house/hotel room until they seem comfortable, usually on the second day there. This playpen packs easily into its carrying case with the rug. The idea is to have a portable home base that is smaller than a whole unfamiliar house or room, but bigger than just their beds alone.

I'd reccomend disposal medical sheets or training puppy sheets instead of old towel in a carrier - they are more compact so easier to fit in your personal luggage, then easier to get rid of them and replace. ❤️ For calming down, I reccomend to spray a carrier with synthetic F3 pheromone, it does it's job really well even on a cat that doesn't react on a catnip or valerian and works for up to 5 hours. It's also useful when you want to help your cat to settle down in the new house.

When we finally made the move, cat travelled better than I did! He just chilled out the whole way. He liked exploring the rest areas and did really well staying at the motel along the way

My two cats and I moved from Norway to Toronto. 22 hours door to door. They meowed more in the 10 min car ride to the airport than the rest of the journey. I moved before this video was made, but I did most of what Jackson advises. I even had a portable little box and about a kilo of litter with us. On our 6 hour layover in Amsterdam, I was lucky enough to find a family bathroom which was completely enclosed so I could let them roam free for about 30 mins and eat, and drink. They didn't do any of this but it was awesome we had that luxury! I kept them in harnesses in their carriers the entire journey and I was VERY lucky they didn't have any accidents. They were absolutely perfect. I was so thankful! I did do A LOT of research and as much training as I could, about 3 months before we moved.
If my little girls and I could do it, so can you! Just be extremely prepared. Someone else mentioned it, but towels are too thick. I cut up one of their thin fleece blankets and took two extras of the cut up carrier size ones for each cat with me in case. I also had puppy pads but didn't end up using them. Bring as many comfort items and essentials as you can with what the airline will allow. Good luck on your journey! ✈️

@@raaidhaahmed7227 Hello. It was very difficult because I travelled via Delhi(India) and the airport staff were very unfriendly. My first flight with Air Canada was okay, but the cabin crew were not very considerate. Our flight was 16 hours long, so I requested them if I could take minnu to the area at the back with his leash on, to give him his medicines but they did not let me. I understand it's risky to take the pet out during the flight, but minnu has asthma and he was terrified in his carrier and kept meowing throughout. I later asked them if they could let us leave the flight first after landing, but they did not allow that as well. The second part of the journey was more difficult because Air India did allow minnu to travel with me in the cabin because he was a little heavier than the weight limit, so they sent him in the hold. All in all it was very difficult.
However, our journey was to India where people hardly bring in pets, so there is no consideration for pet travel. I know a friend who travels to Turkey and has no issues travelling at all. It depends on your airlines and destination. Just make sure you choose a pet friendly airline and get a big enough carrier for them. Also, carry their favourite treats.(Minnu only ate 2 treats throughout the journey). I carried litter in small bags, but Minnu did not pee or poop throughout the journey.
Anyway, stay strong and positive. Keep talking to your cat throughout. Don't let my bad experience affect you. Maybe things will be easier for you. Good luck!

A huge difference for us has been using a little fleece carrier cover that can be easily removed and is breathable. Keeping my kitties from seeing out dramatically cuts down on their yowling and really seems to calm them down. I think anything to reduce stimulation is going to help. :) TSA approved harness and leash = lifesaver knowing that no matter how stressful, I have a safe handle on my kitty as we go through security. I wrap that leash around my hand and arm and hold them firmly and securely to my body. Seems to calm them down a little too. We've moved to and from Europe from the US twice with cats.

I just finished a car trip with two cats, 16 hours there and 16 hours back (with two weeks in between). You have to know what your cat is afraid of. One of mine hates being confined, and the other hates loud noises. What worked for me was to cover their carriers most of the time, and then take pit stops every few hours: lock the car doors and windows, let the cats out of their carriers and explore the interior of the car. They had access to a litter box in the car, but never once used it. Freedom cat roamed all over the luggage and looked out every window. Overstimulated cat hunkered down behind my feet. They would then get put back in their carriers for another few hours, much more relaxed. They were perfectly happy once arriving at our destination (and certainly when we got home).

However, we hire a special company which took care of them from door to door between Brazil and Canada and they were very more relaxed, even though travelling in cargo again. They have big cages and it was cleaned when they arrived. They spent also less time at the airports. Of course, it is not ideal but cargo gives them more space to turn around. And yep we did have to take her out of the carrier at Heathrow, luckily she's a champ in her harness and I always harness her up clipping her in a little safety lead in the carrier to prevent escape. My normally very scared of leaving the house kitty cat was so chill on the flight. He had some gabapentin (not sure how to spell that lol), but even after it wore off, he was pretty relaxed. In the morning when they were serving us breakfast on the flight, I had a cinnamon bun, and Barnum had his breakfast (as well as a lick of the frosting as a treat). Jackson, please add how not let your cat ESCAPE during travel! I have seen it happen too many times amongst acquaintances when they move, and the cats are gone forever. The cat claws out of the soft-sided carrier, or the cat escapes from the harness at the gas station when they let them out "to go pee", or the cat escapes from the motel room, etc. Travel is a very dangerous time for a cat because he doesn't know where "home" is: if the cat can get away -- he is gone forever!

My cat did two trips from Edmonton, AB to Paris (France), the biggest concern was the type of plane used for the flight. Ask them what is the max hight for a carrier.
Also I prepared, and never used, emergency sets: training pad, gloves, garbage bags and wipes, i usually had 4 prepared for 22h trip. Of course, a bit of food, bowl for water too. Go to the pharmacy and get a syringe without needle to give some water while flying.
My vet suggested to fast the cat around 12h before the flight and 8 for the water (see syringe part), that way she would be "empty" and comfortable. She would have a "all she can eat" day right before. She traveled very well but didn't want to eat much during the flight, not even her favourite candies. Upon arrival, after half an hour, she ate nicely.

Did she cry a lot? My concern is to take my cat from southamerica to europe after i move there but that she'll cry a lot in the plane and make other passengers uncomfortable.

What was the airline and pet carrier height? Did you end up flying with the hard shell or soft shell carrier?

Thank you so much for this, my cat does NOT enjoy travelling and I could never figure out why. We tried putting a pillow on one side of her crate (the other side had built in waste collection). She peed in it, slept in it and arrived at our new house covered smelly and unhappy. I’ll be sure to use these tips if we ever move again!

I am getting ready to fly from Houston, Texas to Tokyo at the end of the year for a move, I'll be calling United tomorrow to see if I can fly my cats in-cabin for that flight and I'm glad to know I can request a private room for screening!

Glad to hear you sing! I've been wondering what your music is like. I'm moving from Austin to Vancouver WA, so this is timely.

Thank you for the "cargo" advice! I was wondering. And I don't trust the airline to say that she doesn't fit or something last minute for the cabin option. I'm also making a cross-continent move, but I'll find an alternative.

A request for Jackson's fans: if you leave a comment, it helps him with the UA-cam algorithm that gives him a higher placement in the stream.

Not going in cargo is not an option when you move internationally. We recently moved from England to Missouri our cat and 2 dogs had to travel in cargo. They were all okay at the other end and have settled in to their new home perfectly. When we moved within Europe we chose to drive from England to Poland. They had to go into the ships animal cages on the 12 hour sea crossing. In the car we used a combination of a crate and a harness and leash so he could chose if he wanted to sit on our children’s knees or in his bed. It was a 15 hour drive. We stopped every few hours to walk the dogs and gave Mr Mouse a litter tray in the car and about 30 mins to do what he needed to do. The leash meant that we could open the car door without fear of him getting out and being injured. In the car it was to make sure he didn’t get into the front and cause an accident.
