"In treatment" does not say for what. Results may have been different if she had said what she was in treatment for. Of course, the court staff member who took the call could have asked "for what?" unless that's considered as unacceptably nosey.
The other lawyer had a pre-existing, I think. The judge supposedly said this woman was only in treatment. You have to consider those things. It's not neccsarily r word.
She couildnt provide proof of her medical condition. It had nothing to do with her skin color. You get a video appearance if you can supply medical proof of why you are unable to attend. The statement from the judge clearly outlined that.

You get to see prosecutors work for a conviction whether or not the defendant is clearly innocent (ie they will literally fight an alibi like hell), and you know well ahead of time how a judge will rule based on their political party (not impartial AT ALL).

She does sound persuasive, but when you boil this down to just the facts, a _judicial clerk_ either miscommunicated with or was racist to an attorney; then a judge accepted the guilty plea of that attorney's client and sentenced him to two years probation (instead of five years incarceration), but declined to expunge his record of the three felonies to which he plead guilty. It's irresponsible of a news station to run a segment based on those facts that's only two-and-a-half minutes and framed as "white judge discriminates against black attorney battling cancer, makes attorney's black client pay by rejecting plea deal for minor infraction and imposing harsh sentence instead."

All this after a judge in Hamtramck was just publicly shamed for scolding an immigrant man with health issues about his overgrown yard. Needless to say, after that, it didn't take long for the apologies to come. This attorney deserves an apology as well. For the insensitivity, for the inflexibility and for not giving the client, in this case, a fair sentencing.
I saw that case about the immigrant man dying of cancer whose lawn was overgrown. Made me sick how the judge treated him. She wanted to give him jail time because the neighbours had to LOOK at an eyesore. I get it - as a home owner in a nice area, you don't want to live with people who can't keep their lawn in order ... but jail time? It's so ridiculous. At most it's a "rude neighbour", but this guy was dying of cancer and his son was out of the country on business. There's a special place in hell for judges like that.
That Judge in Hamtramck actually realized she was wrong in the way she handled that man and she turned her self in to higher sources for an investigation.
When I had elderly or ill neighbors who couldn’t do yard work, I helped them out. If I were at work , my sons helped them. It’s called being a good neighbor. Nowadays your so called neighbors call code enforcement or the cops on you without talking to you first.
We need more attorney’s like this and more accountability for judges and other’s of authority who do not follow the letter of the law and instead, use their own bias’ at their discretion.
She should file her complaint with the state bar association, along with transcripts of the white attorney's situation, additionally using the states open records and freedom of information act its necessary to request all other complaints filed against her as well as her judicial history.

A first time offender appeared before her, with a plea deal in place, offered by the prosecutor, with a sentence supported by the probation department. Precedent demands she accept the deal- unless she knows something the lawyers dont, or if the deal was outrageous compared to the crime- either too harsh or not enough- at which time she would put it on the court record as her reason for denying the deal. But thay didnt happen. It appears she unduly punished the defendant because she didnt like what the lawyer had to say. That is judicial misconduct 101. She wont be a judge too much longer.

"In treatment" does not say for what. Results may have been different if she had said what she was in treatment for. Of course, the court staff member who took the call could have asked "for what?" unless that's considered as unacceptably nosey.

You get to see prosecutors work for a conviction whether or not the defendant is clearly innocent (ie they will literally fight an alibi like hell), and you know well ahead of time how a judge will rule based on their political party (not impartial AT ALL).

She does sound persuasive, but when you boil this down to just the facts, a _judicial clerk_ either miscommunicated with or was racist to an attorney; then a judge accepted the guilty plea of that attorney's client and sentenced him to two years probation (instead of five years incarceration), but declined to expunge his record of the three felonies to which he plead guilty.
It's irresponsible of a news station to run a segment based on those facts that's only two-and-a-half minutes and framed as "white judge discriminates against black attorney battling cancer, makes attorney's black client pay by rejecting plea deal for minor infraction and imposing harsh sentence instead."

All this after a judge in Hamtramck was just publicly shamed for scolding an immigrant man with health issues about his overgrown yard. Needless to say, after that, it didn't take long for the apologies to come. This attorney deserves an apology as well. For the insensitivity, for the inflexibility and for not giving the client, in this case, a fair sentencing.
I saw that case about the immigrant man dying of cancer whose lawn was overgrown. Made me sick how the judge treated him. She wanted to give him jail time because the neighbours had to LOOK at an eyesore. I get it - as a home owner in a nice area, you don't want to live with people who can't keep their lawn in order ... but jail time? It's so ridiculous. At most it's a "rude neighbour", but this guy was dying of cancer and his son was out of the country on business. There's a special place in hell for judges like that.
That Judge in Hamtramck actually realized she was wrong in the way she handled that man and she turned her self in to higher sources for an investigation.
When I had elderly or ill neighbors who couldn’t do yard work, I helped them out. If I were at work , my sons helped them. It’s called being a good neighbor. Nowadays your so called neighbors call code enforcement or the cops on you without talking to you first.

A first time offender appeared before her, with a plea deal in place, offered by the prosecutor, with a sentence supported by the probation department. Precedent demands she accept the deal- unless she knows something the lawyers dont, or if the deal was outrageous compared to the crime- either too harsh or not enough- at which time she would put it on the court record as her reason for denying the deal. But thay didnt happen. It appears she unduly punished the defendant because she didnt like what the lawyer had to say. That is judicial misconduct 101. She wont be a judge too much longer.

WHAT YOU ARE NOT BEING TOLD IS THAT SHE IS A PUBLIC DEFENDER WHICH MEANS SHE WORKS FOR THE COURT AND THE JUDGE DOES HAVE AUTORITY OVER HER. THE OTHER LAWYER WHO WAS ON ZOOM WAS A PRIVATE LAWYER WHO DOES HAVE TO RESPECT THE RULES OF THE COURT BUT IS NOT AN EMPLOYEE OF THE COURT.
If all of that is true, it makes sense that she was required to be there in person. I kinda figured there's more to the story.
Public defender do not work for the court. They are not employed by the court. The Judge doesn’t have authority over the public defender.

I hope this lawyer beats her cancer first and foremost and ultimately beats this case. It is unfair that she was not allowed to work from home during her time of treatment. I do hope in her pursuit of justice about this injustice that she doesn't let the stress of it destroy her health further. I hope in prayer she can win all around, and yet stay intact physically and mentally as I am sure the case will demand a lot of her down the line. Hoping for a speedy and just resolution for her.

I'm tired of people immediately going to racism, but in this case, it seems justifiable cuz the judge threw out her own court's plea deal of a first time offender. Hopefully she gets what's coming to her.

It’s doesn’t necessarily sound like it was the judge that did anything, but whatever clerks she was in contact with. And did they really know nothing more than that someone was “in treatment”, or did they actually know they had cancer? A lot of unanswered questions for a huge accusation.
She looks like a spoiled rotten person this judge. Always judging others probably never had any difficulties of any kind. People like this should not be in a position of judging others those who have never had any difficulties in life
You’re using bias and stereotypes to make an argument. How is that any different from your accusations? The Judge is accused of racism because she failed to afford two participants the same treatment on the same issues…illness. This complaining attorney could also allege sexism, because the other attorney was a male. But, saying, the judge is or looks like a woman of privilege has nothing to do with issue. Measure the behavior, not your assumptions about the offender.

You said “don’t represent criminals”, well according to the LAW, people are innocent until proven guilty and have a RIGHT to an attorney. This country is supposed to be fair. Everyone treated equal. I’m on her side cancer survivor here. After affects of treatment is horrible.
If she failed to let the court know WHY she needed to appear virtually, that is a problem. She only said she was in treatment. Is documentation required? What was her record prior to this? Was there any issue with her appearance in the past? Was she late? This story is leaving so much unanswered. I am interested in hearing the other side before rushing to judgment. Everything is of public record, so just a little investigation will tell us it there is a pattern of racism here.
