Afford it? ... You think these companies want you to OWN things? Please.... you'll rent it over the course of your life so the cost will be spread out over 60-80 years. They want EVERYTHING to be a subscription because that's basically eliminating property without running afoul of the Constitution. Its how you profit forever without actually having to give people the leverage of owning an asset, no matter how small that asset is (from a vintage rug to a mega-mansion, everything that isnt consumed when it's used is an asset; which can either appreciate or depreciate).
Why attack the concept property? Simple, _slaves don't own property._ Now, slavery is illegal, but you can achieve the same effect by making everyone dependent on you (or you + your friends' companies + gov't) for every aspect of their life. Same old Confederate end-goal... they just call themselves "Democrats" and "Progressives" now.

When my kids were toddlers up to age 3 I did not let them use FaceTime. They had little screentime before age 5. There is a period of development when learning eye contact is an important milestone. FaceTime does not allow real eye contact - you must look at the camera for the other person to perceive you looking them in the eye. It’s subtle but eye contact for humans (and other animals) is very important. It just felt wrong to allow a baby to interact virtually with a person they loved without being able to make eye contact.

unfortunately it's as someone stated above, not a new thing, or exclusive to you. You are 100% in the right because I as someone who wasn't even born before 97 can tell you that those first 10 years of my life were, well, better. People like to dismiss it as childhood nostalgia but it's not. It's not 'I miss christmas like we used to have' or a gaming aesthetic, it's genuinely terrifying how many people just refuse to let go of the extra and unnecessary "technology" like this. I mean, for real, we had technology to solve our problems and make our day to day life better. This does nothing but to rob you of any natural interaction to the point where it's basically not even your own existence anymore. Is that not unsettling to anyone else but us?
And again, as someone commented above, we can bark all day but there will be 100 people for every 1 of us, that indulge and buy. Then we look like morons and downers and 'deep' because we just want life to be normal. Why is it like asking for the moon when it's clearly going to benefit everybody?

Not a single word being said to each other as I passed them. Can you even fathom THIS technology 10 years in the future? Those kids in the circle won’t even be there. Why would you ever step outside the house if you can put on your headset and “hang out” with your friends together on a digital frontier?

You already can, that is why “fear” over these kind of goggles is over hyped. The addiction to phones is mental. It isn’t anything to do with visual immersion. The visual portion is completely unnecessary for the “hook.” And is why it will essentially be a flop. I actually don’t think these goggles will be around in 5-10yrs. Seriously what a ridiculous take, jesus he is streeeeeeeetching for content. Also he didn't do any research. He clearly has never played VR on any device. It exactly the same as a PC or a TV and console. It just helps passing the time. The people who sit on the couch all day and watch TV are the ones who will fall into a virtual world. Society will not change, the tech just gets better. We will always have a portion of humanity who chooses their addiction in the form of media consumption.
I personally went free diving, in the real ocean, this morning and played VR for 2 hours after I got home. But I guess I'm just a VR zombie.

The price isn't the issue. The issue is that it:
1/ undoes the 30 minutes of work women put into their hair
2/ hides the top part of their face, which is their favourite
3/ prevent them from making egocentric social media posts (selfies etc)
Those 3 things alone makes it the stupidest product in the world.
Search "Apple vision pro review" here on youtube, noticing something? No women... Helmets will NEVER work for women.

That being said the unintended consequence have been eye opening and now at age 54 with my own cottage on a lake in the woods of New Hampshire I'm furnishing it with housewares from the 80s with the only circuit board being the smoke detection, carbon monoxide detection and this phone which is a tool to help fix whatever I need but really it's the other people that share their knowledge who helped me get here so thankyou. Oh yeah, my LED bulbs have circuit boards but they're easy to fix and won't spy, yet. (Insert Dr Evil laugh) Thanks Moon

Might be problematic for something like the quest 3 where its 7x less the cost and made by zuck. But vision pro will be a pure luxury novalty for the time being (Mainly used for Tesla owners to watch porn while their "FSD" runs over pedestrians). The only way i would pay 3.5k on a VR system is if its a full PCVR kit loaded with base stations and body trackers.

It is meant to be a home device like a desktop that you can use anywhere. It is way too expensive for me but even the media consumption on this with the spatial audio would be about $2000+ with a regular big screen TV with a suitable sound system. It also acts as a computer and has a beefy chip inside. I don't think these devices are more addicting than the tech we have now. All in moderation. I have a Meta Quest 3 and find it much less addicting than traditional tech. I actually like that I need a break after an hour or two.

It’s a novelty and nothing else. It’s impractical and doesn’t do anything groundbreaking. It runs apps just like a phone does. 3D tv didn’t take off because people didn’t want to wear glasses. VR has stalled as people don’t want to use clunky headsets. This is no different. Wearing one of these in public will make you stand out for all the wrong reasons.

""Allows you to stay in augmented reality for hours at a time, if not days."
Having over half a kilo of plastic strapped to your face for long periods of time isn't going to appeal to most people, especially at $3500.
On top of that, you need a chunky 350g battery for the thing in your pocket or in a bag, and even then it only lasts 2 hours.
Apple's brand isn't innovation, it's ergonomics and a premium look and feel. The Vision Pro already feels antiquated.

That would be a significant cultural shift for society to accept people wearing cameras, microphones and who knows what other sensors 24/7. I think mostly due to the fact that someone recording makes people self-correct due to various anxieties people experience. So, even now after more than 10 years of smartphones, people are still quite opposed to other people filming them without explicit consent. That's why Google's AR glasses failed. And finally - for the VR use itself - there's not much value proposition in private life for now. Sure, professionally they are amazing tools and could be great for education but that's about it as far as I can see for now.

You can get a decent gaming PC for $2k AND an HTC Vive with all the doodads for another $1500. You can have a sweet, sweet VR set up for the same price. There's a few people out there who have tried using VR in the real world - like using the headset as a daily driver. It's awkward - it doesn't work. Why? Because you feel like everyone is staring at you. AND THEY ARE! You can't use it while driving - like a phone. It's not compact - like a phone. You can't throw it in your pocket like a phone. You need to be sitting down or in a calm environment to use it - unlike a phone that you can whip out at any moment.

I think the potential isolation and manipulation factors is why the AVP was designed to keep you in your environment - it can help ground you in what is real, so it doesn’t serve as a replacement. As for avatars, I think Apple’s taken the proper approach by only allowing your avatar to be based on your real appearance. I’ll never really like the idea of a digital photorealistic version of myself, but at least I can’t pretend to be some perfect version of me like I could on a platform that allows greater customization.
