This reminds me of an old episode of Star Trek called The Game. The crew gets introduced to a AR headset style game that is actually quite stupid but gives the user tons of dopamine. The whole crew becomes addicted and the stop completing their normal functions on the ship. It was all a ploy by aliens trying to steal the Enterprise .

I've heard of the concept that if you convince people that the future is this product, platform, medium, then it is significantly more likely that it will succeed and actually become the future. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy. With Apple's headset - and all VR products for that matter - I sincerely hope that our society will choose to say "naah, this is bullshit", despite the entire wave of "propaganda" that will be telling us: here is the future, buy it now.
The good thing with VR gaming though at least you know that is just a game they're not trying to replace a reality they're just give me a different way to play your favorite video games.

When my kids were toddlers up to age 3 I did not let them use FaceTime. They had little screentime before age 5. There is a period of development when learning eye contact is an important milestone. FaceTime does not allow real eye contact - you must look at the camera for the other person to perceive you looking them in the eye. It’s subtle but eye contact for humans (and other animals) is very important. It just felt wrong to allow a baby to interact virtually with a person they loved without being able to make eye contact.
As a fireman, who often doesn’t get to see his kids for 2-5 days at a time, I LOVE FaceTime. I may not get to be with my kids every day, at least I can see and chat with them.

Our reality is already flooded with media from store signs to driving signs to license plates, bumper stickers, t-shirts, tattoos, etc. we are already immersed. The key to keeping reality close to what we have now will be to limit the amount of overlaid media that is ridiculously annoying and over the top. Otherwise it will become dystopian as you point out. It needs to be clean, their should be virtual laws and policing!!!

The virtual cinema aspect would be very cool as well. Generate a giant screen right in your living room. But apparently Netflix and other apps won't be available on it. Plus it's wayyyyyy too expensive. For 500 bucks I'd be interested. 3500? That's the price of a 2nd hand car.
But it clearly isn't design for gaming. The giant curved glass panel in the front is too heavy and fragile, so it's definitely not suitable for fast, rapid movement. And the battery life is horrible, especially when you run a whole VR game on it. The Meta or Valve index is so much better for such task.
Ironically this video is being rated by UA-cam retention analytics which rewards the UA-camr to make more addictive content for us to consume.

You forgot the most important thing: Vision Pro doesn't have any controller, instead you only need to use your bare hands, fingers, eyes and head movement to interact with the device. This removes a lot of barriers between the virtual and reality, it literally looks like magic. I think this is the main feature that will get spatial computing to the mainstream in the future.

It’s a novelty and nothing else. It’s impractical and doesn’t do anything groundbreaking. It runs apps just like a phone does. 3D tv didn’t take off because people didn’t want to wear glasses. VR has stalled as people don’t want to use clunky headsets. This is no different. Wearing one of these in public will make you stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Was out at the mall the other week. There was a group of kids sitting in a circle by the entrance of store. Every single one of them was looking down, on their phones, endlessly scrolling. Not a single word being said to each other as I passed them. Can you even fathom THIS technology 10 years in the future? Those kids in the circle won’t even be there. Why would you ever step outside the house if you can put on your headset and “hang out” with your friends together on a digital frontier?
We can just hope parents are not dumb and put up with age restrictions over these devices- eventually its the adults at fault who are providing and failing to regulate the usage- failure of one parent leads to immense fomo for other kids to be influenced and force parents who actually regulate to get them these gadgets.

You already can, that is why “fear” over these kind of goggles is over hyped. The addiction to phones is mental. It isn’t anything to do with visual immersion. The visual portion is completely unnecessary for the “hook.” And is why it will essentially be a flop. I actually don’t think these goggles will be around in 5-10yrs. Especially if price doesn’t come down significantly. And seeing Apple’s appetite for premium pricing, that isn’t very likely.

However, Moon said in the video that it's because these VR realities are mainly for gaming - a huge breaking point. As mentioned in the video, when virtual reality becomes practically useful, it will go global. There are many things that could be done easily. Why do you claim it's been here for so long? VR headsets only started to become somewhat usable in 2014. If this is what we have in 2024, I believe that by 2050, VR headsets could achieve the vision set by Apple.

I agree with lots of the points here, but it took me a few videos from this channel to realize that there’s quite some pessimistic and fear mongering vibes in these videos. I think the potential isolation and manipulation factors is why the AVP was designed to keep you in your environment - it can help ground you in what is real, so it doesn’t serve as a replacement. As for avatars, I think Apple’s taken the proper approach by only allowing your avatar to be based on your real appearance. I’ll never really like the idea of a digital photorealistic version of myself, but at least I can’t pretend to be some perfect version of me like I could on a platform that allows greater customization.

I think in 5-7 years VR will be not bigger than glasses and price will be times less, so it can possibly get mainstream.
I've had VR 6 years ago, messed around in Unity creating scenes and small games and it was awesome at first, but the novelty wore off real quick. It's just too strenuous to wear it all the time and after a long day at work I just didn't want to move that much. I think a lot of people will think the same. I realize that the glasses will probably get smaller making them more comfortable but the one thing that won't change is how close they are to your eyes, making it strenuous to wear them and also movement in VR tends to make a lot of people nauseous. I think the market for VR will definitely get bigger but I don't think it will ever completely replace flat screens.
So were smart phones at the time.
I had VR before. It's 100% a novelty. No one enjoys wearing that hot sweaty stuff on your head.

I am going to be brutally sincere. While I am majoring in Computer Science, I realized Instant Gratification is slowly decimating our human potential. I have been constructing side projects that will improve the education system for the United States. However, after watching this, I have to be cautious to my commitments.

I actually worked for a startup that's changing US educational system for the better, that was hell of a ride. However, I struggle to remember anything about instant gratification that was/still is in the software. I think it's safe to assume that if an educational app is giving you instant gratification, it's a project manager's/CTO's fault, these kinds of apps should never have those bells and whistles people love to spend time on in TikTok etc. I see no reason to be cautious here, other than the obvious “write sane and readable code, make comments, optimize DB queries etc, otherwise it's gonna bite”

So now big companies let make people collect information (audio, video, location, etc…) about everything and everyone. This is synced in the cloud on their servers. What are they doing with all this information?
When people joined social media, they shared their data. But with the Vision pro, they also share the data and activity from all other people they see. How more people wear this Vision Pro, how less privacy we have. This is the opposite of what Apple tells us: The importance of privacy.
Why isn’t this talked more about? All vision pro owners who wear it in public are filming everyone.

As a VR/AR developer, I can say with confidence that no-one will get "addicted to" wearing headsets of any kind. They are not easy to wear for a long period of time and people will do with this headset what they have done with all previous headsets...use it for a few weeks or months, then it will gather dust in a cupboard.
However they are fantastic teaching tools, particularly in the medical and engineering industries.
This technology will only be used by broad swathes of the population when the form factor and weight matches that of a pair of sunglasses.
The VR/AR devices will get smaller and smaller.
Yup and miniaturisation is inevitable. So small they will become implanted into the retina. We're the larvae for the next stage in evolution.
Gamers and the education sector seems like the target demo at least until they are in the form factor of ray-ban meta glasses even the Apple Watch that is popular not everyone as one so there is a market but I doubt you will see anyone wearing it outside

I don't think VR will catch on because a lot of people (me included) get motion sickness wearing those for long periods of time
the main problem i see with AVP is, that it collects WAY more data about you and your surroundings than it provides viable usage cases.
I don´t really see what is really groundbreaking about the Vision Pro, all you can do with it can be done with the Quest 3 for a 7th the price. It´s designed to be used as a single user device, you dont really have social interactions like in the Meta. And then the price. For me if anything the Vision Pro will be a great commercial for people to try the other more affordable VR options, than can do much more stuff.

That would be a significant cultural shift for society to accept people wearing cameras, microphones and who knows what other sensors 24/7. I think mostly due to the fact that someone recording makes people self-correct due to various anxieties people experience. So, even now after more than 10 years of smartphones, people are still quite opposed to other people filming them without explicit consent. That's why Google's AR glasses failed. And finally - for the VR use itself - there's not much value proposition in private life for now. Sure, professionally they are amazing tools and could be great for education but that's about it as far as I can see for now.

which is why we have to stand up and make a change. I am a teenager, and I do not own a phone, I do not go onto social media platforms like Instagram, twitter etc. This is what I have done since young, and I'll continue to do it. I will not get the apple vision pro, even if someone is going to sell me one for free in the future, because I do not want to be like everyone else. I want to be the only person to be in charge of my life, not under any corporate overlord or any other person's control. And I like how its released the day after my birthday.
It's always people who create the mess. Always was. The thing with modern technology is that people generally use it to show off their delusions instead of actually changing their lives with it.

Microsft did this YEARS AGO with HoloLens 1 & 2. What makes the Vision Pro scary is Apple's family of devices, constant data collection, and lack of data transparency. We need policies for digital rights and data ownership.

I've watched fog form on the lakes I live on roll in and destroy my all in one jump starter pack that has an inverter, charging ports and an air compressor that'll shut off at the pressure you set. I can't imagine the oceanside island I lived on before and the salt air ruining electronics.

hard to get addicted to something thats so expensive olny 1% of people will own one. not to mention how foolish it would look to wear one in public.
It is meant to be a home device like a desktop that you can use anywhere. It is way too expensive for me but even the media consumption on this with the spatial audio would be about $2000+ with a regular big screen TV with a suitable sound system. It also acts as a computer and has a beefy chip inside. I don't think these devices are more addicting than the tech we have now. All in moderation. I have a Meta Quest 3 and find it much less addicting than traditional tech. I actually like that I need a break after an hour or two.
I use VR as entertainment. Despite the many clickbait thumbnails I've been lured into clicking on predicting doom and gloom, I have yet to see any dystopias in VR. It's basically a personal interactive amusement park. I find flying around in the XPlane flight simulator quite relaxing and I certainly don't live in the device. Your mileage may vary.
VR is a pretty incredible device.

The trick is that you gotta remember where the power button on your PC/smartphone is and force yourself to turn it off and go outside and talk to the guy who's making your sandwich at the deli.

Well good thing it costs so much. I haven't seen anyone in real life with one in public.
Because you not suppose to use them in public, in fact Quest give you notice you should not to (other then safty issues, it not made for outside use and probably rain could damage it + you can't have lenses in direct sunlight as it could burn the screens, all vr headsets got this warning)
Technology is extremely dangerous, but thankfully, most people will not be able to afford these goggles.

Everyone who gets one unironically is going to feel some serious buyers remorse.
Its just a glorified face-mounted ipad that will put some serious strain on your face and neck.
There's a reason why VR headsets like the Bigscreen Beyond are gaining so much interest, and that's due to the fact it is so small and lightweight that you'll forget you're even wearing it. From personal experience, it feels like putting on a pair of goggles rather than a helmet.
It can still cost just as much as a Vision Pro (as long as you include the costs of the PC and the base stations and Index knuckles) and yet still be a better value, because you'll still have a PC that you can do other things with. With the Vision Pro, its very limited in capability and what you can actually do with it.
No one's talking about it because most people can't afford it yet.
yes, VR/XR/AR is the future. i don't think the vision pro will be the headset to push the industry forward but i could be wrong. looking forward to the reviews. its quite expensive so i reckon it will be pretty damn good
I think the quest2 was the first device to do the first big step into mainstream, we need smaller form factors, I don't think avp will be the one in it's current form/utility.
Can't wait for moon to not buy the headset after it's already been met with positive reviews, and make a video about how it's everything wrong with society 😊
