    Constipation is horrendous, my mother battles with chronic constipation. My father died from he's intestine folded over and passed away due to fecal compaction,both parents in mid 90s.. thank you for the help. Now days docs prescribe every pill you can imagine. The elders don't have a chance. Thanks to April Graham my mother of 93 is living her best self, not constipated, no pharma meds and is as feisty as ever..this shit really works. I started my mom on a littlebit. Knocking this out😂thank you again sincerely..

    I used to order from this expensive website and this botanical pharmacy has poop capsules which contain cascara as well. When i still worked I tried it, once! Yes on a day off😂 Your talk makes complete sense!
    Now I wonder if lemonbalm tea can create such a "lower explosion" due to its calming effects. My one child is a nervous Nellie and she will not touch lemonbalm tea again. In order to calm her it cleaned out her gut, majorly. Noone ever heard of lemonbalm effects like that, popped straight into my mind listening to you.

    Hi April,
    I’ve battled chronic constipation my entire life. I saw this video and started taking this. Seems to work pretty well so far. My question is, I have read that it’s dangerous to be taken with certain things and long term. Is it dangerous to continue to take longer than a week?
    Thank you ❤

    • @sheisofthewoods
      @sheisofthewoods  7 місяців тому

      So long as it's aged and you're not taking huge amounts it's fine to take daily. There were TWO people (out of millions) who made themselves sick with fresh cascara bark taken in huge amounts.
      They also hurt mice by making them eat huge amounts, they basically died from nutrient depletion from 24/7 diarrhea. Again, not something we'd willfully induce on ourselves.
      There are some meds you'd not want to take it with but that's usually to do with not wanting to take a laxative with a laxative kinda deal.

    I have zero peristalsis in my colon. Dietary changes make no difference at all. Fiber makes it worse. Osmotics don't work at all I either 1) don't poop and build up to impaction or 2) have to take a laxative and/or enemas weekly and have a "poo day" and poop a week's worth over the day. Senna gives me such cramps and I don't like commercial synthetic laxatives. Is aged cascara bark suitable for a colon with no peristalsis at all?

    • @sheisofthewoods
      @sheisofthewoods  9 місяців тому +4

      It's possible since it's partially pulling enzymes that act like a laxative (pulling water) from a quick search this study looks worth reading: "They promote peristalsis presumably by direct action on the colonic mucosa and by stimulating intraluminal water and electrolyte secretion." www.sciencedirect.com/topics/pharmacology-toxicology-and-pharmaceutical-science/cascara

      @@sheisofthewoods Thank you so much! I am taking prucalipride, the only prescription I've ever take daily in my life (I'm 64) because I'm just wanting to see if there IS a magic pill instead of a painful, crampy weekly "poo day" LOL and it has something to do with the gut serotonin and acetylcholine and getting the nerves to work or something. It works sometimes for a few days and then it will just stop for a couple of weeks. I'd like to dump the prescription so I will try this and see if it helps. Things that increase fluids in there don't seem to help, but maybe because of the serotonin action, this will.

    • @sheisofthewoods
      @sheisofthewoods  9 місяців тому +2

      A couple things come to mind 1.) If you haven't investigated your parasympathetic nervous system function/retoning your vagal nerve I'd fall down that rabbit hole hard because it's how we digest food/have move it through until the end. 2.) I was just reading this morning in the book called human heart cosmic heart (heart doctor challenging what actually causes heart issues) about a plant called G-strophanthin and while he was discussing it for maintaining heart function is does so by increasing acetylcholine which is what the parasympathetic nervous system uses to function! It's more of a heroic plant (can be toxic) BUT may be worth investing since it would seemingly have a direct impact on your situation.

    • @sweaterdoll
      @sweaterdoll 9 місяців тому

      @@sheisofthewoods I will definitely go down that rabbit hole. I sleep like the dead and would have thought my parasympathetic was pretty sound, but I've always also been a worrier and easy to rile up (until I got old and it's not as bad). I have had the constipation since I was very young, but who knows if family stress - which was rampant - played a part on my nervous system. My husband has chronic fatigue and also separate sleep issues: he can hardly fall asleep and can't stay asleep. It's like his sympathetic nervous system pops back on as he starts to "fall" and then he's wide awake again. Normal sedatives and things like valerian, passionflower, skullcap just don't help him. Melatonin doesn't help him. He uses motherwort, Eleuthera infusion, lion's mane regularly. He also takes nettle tincture, dead nettle to calm down the glial cell action, chaga sometimes, linden infusion. He also takes ashwagandha and cordyceps powders now and then. I pieced a lot together via Susun Weed's adaptogen course and my own plant uses when he crashed and couldn't get off the couch for six months and western medicine had nothing for him. A year later he was out building a chicken coop! But still the sleep problems with the parasympathetic not getting a chance. I think some more research on the vagal nerve would do us both good. Thank you. I really appreciate your considering all this!

    • @sheisofthewoods

      Typically I just compost them but would not feed them to the chickens due to the leftover alcohol content that could cause issues for them, but sometimes I freeze it before it dries and then you can use it for what's called tincture tea which is just what it sounds like.

    Thanks for this. I take prucalopride for zero motility in my colon and it sort of/sometimes works (and still need laxative help every couple of weeks and a whole day in the bathroom) but better than if I take nothing which means no going at all. Ever. I got aged cascara sagrada root in capsules and have been taking it for the last 5 days (pouring half an 800mg capsule into a spoon of yogurt) with the prucalopride and have gone easily every day. 🥰No cramps or weirdness at all.
    I understand this cascara bark should NOT be taken daily for a long period. Can you recommend the safe number of days it can be taken and maybe a rest period until it can be resumed? I also have LPR and idiopathic gastritis from chronic lifelong constant post-nasal drip (apparently).
    I am 64 years old and otherwise in good health.(Although I really like the connection there between stress and cascara and the fact that it moves a digestive system as I had a very stressful childhood when all this started in my gut. And it's not a dietary or hydration issue at all.The smooth muscles just worked less and less as my life went on and that makes sense considering the stress I was under as a young child.) I make my own probiotic-rich organic grass-fed milk yogurt, sourdough bread, etc., eat very well and not really packaged foods and my nurse practitioner can't find a single fault in my diet. I cannot have whole grain bread because it's too bulking. I eat my weeds: dandelion, chickweed, etc. and drink herbal infusions. Thank you!

    • @sheisofthewoods
      @sheisofthewoods  7 місяців тому +2

      It's safe to use daily, those studies were done with HUGE amounts given to mice until they became injured. A human would have to eat nearly 1 oz of bark a day to cause damage and by then they'd become so dehydrated/stripped of minerals it's hard to say if the cascara did the damage or the shitting yourself to death did😂
      As a side note, have you looked into toning your vagus nerve? The stress you underwent likey damage the vagus nerve which among other things directly controls motility in the gut/intestines. May not be a total fix but definitely worth looking into!
