Stock drg engi only has 1 sentry, there is an upgrade that gives a second sentry which most people chose.

I'd argue that with the age of the game, and the proficiency of the players at destroying sentry nests, playing engie as a decent player in TF2 isn't nearly as slow and calm as you make it out to be. But overall I agree.
DRG. Why? Because his grenade overclocks, be it Fat Boy or Hyperpropellent, is great at making specific problems go away - it's just a question of how much aiming do you want to do to delete said target. :D

DRG is probably the only game i know where the engineer class is a DPS rather than a support or defence class.
@@oscarlove4394 DRG doesn't really have pure support or defense classes except maybe the Driller.
In Team Fortress 2, the Engineer takes the part of a support role, building dispensers to heal teammates and replenish ammo, defending important chokes and points with the sentry gun, and moving the frontlines with teleporters.

Engineer from TF2 and Engineer from DRG have in fact many similarities, for example:
- They both support the team by providing a base line of fire
- They both have a god complex/give me a god complex
- they are both short
- HATS.

The beauty of DRG is every class is good on its own but SHINES when grouped. Everyone can contribute meaningfully to success.
Exactly! Each class has its own purpose in damage, movement and utility. Each one can complete every mission on every hazard level solo just fine, but they're ultimately incomplete without each other.
I would say it's the same with TF2, but it's more rare to encounter a well coordinated team, though when it happens, it's awesome.
@@RDTRNTBecause tf2, ironically, is closer to a single player game that just happens to have other players.
Valve realized pretty early on (through their failed "Commander" attempts during early tf2 versions) that players HATED failing due to another player, since it wasn't their fault (or even if it was), so they would quit. Tf2 fixed this by being primarily solo based with opportunities to work together (protecting the engie/medic, helping a fellow spy get a kill by distracting an enemy, calling out a sniper, etc.) You don't NEED to keep your medic safe or help a spy, but doing so makes it easier to win and, if you fail, you blame YOURSELF for either solo mistakes or not putting your effort in.
It's a remarkable way to handle teamwork, and I think is one major reason the "friendly" playstyle even formed, you don't need to play as expected to have fun and you aren't ruining the fun of others nearly as much as other games.
@@thunderspark1536 That makes sense. On the other hand, DRG is widely cited as such a positive game because every class could be considered a support class! So even a selfish player, who only uses their abilities for their own benefit, will still end up accidentally helping their team!

Tf2 engineers: the backbone of the defense/push, a grand help to the team and a major roadblock to the enemy team
DRG engineer: an extremely versatile war criminal among the most powerful of the dwarves who only grows more terrifyingly destructive for each additional engineer alongside him, with a full team of 4-8 engineers being a near-unstoppable force of chaos ripping through anything that foolishly attempts to challenge them

Another way to compare them is that the TF2 engie puts most of his effectors "outside" on the ground, while the DRG engie carries most of his effectors "inside" with him, but both are at their best when protecting a specific area, both have to constantly reposition within that area, both have to swap between all of their tools according to the situation to remain efficient, and both have to keep an eye on the resources available to them to a greater degree than other classes. I think playing one makes you better at playing the other.
I really like that the Deep Rock engineer continues the legacy set by the TF2 engineer

Good news! TF2 is not going to die, it is going to live forever!
The mono-class team meme is not that bad in deep rock with 4 tech-guys, them being so flexible lessens the pain of lack of specific tools, like the hyper mobility of scout or the fast terrain removal of driller.
All of them have bonuses that mean its not actually bad to play. For gunner, you have so many shields that you can never leave one if you feel like it, and the overwhelming firepower can take out anything really fast. For engie, they're all very flexible and can deal with most situations. For scout, you're all moving so fast that its gonna be hard for the bugs to keep you all down, and swarms are an afterthought with builds like electrifying reload GK2. Driller is the most niche, but swarms will be practically stuck with the number of CC abilities, and i gotta say, the fastest Haz 5 aquarq mission i've done was a 4 driller team, we all just blitzed the objective.
same for the aquarq on haz 5(high oxygen and jet boots) our only swarm was after we send the site away

@@lestevegmbh2637 Sounds easy done right. Bulldog, coilgun, mingun and hurricane are all good options to deal with ranged enemies. Innacuracy doesn’t matter if you have 8,000 rounds to play with. Someone going down doesn’t matter, as you can just toss a shield and rez them, and also have cover for a while, and still have 3 fully charged by the end. Its also a perfect time to use my patented method of the gunkie (a bunker dug by just gunners, with just gunners in it. You want a nice wide mouth for it too). The chances you have an entire team end up in a pit they can’t get out of together, with so many ranged enemies that you’ll burn through all your shields and ammo is then so incredibly slim.

Funny enough, they're both my favorite class to play in each respective game.
9:56 slight correction the 2 sentry’s are an upgrade, you start with 1 but can either upgrade to two or choose to get 1 powerful one instead.
well, except 2 sentries is generally better option, since they provide higher DPS the option comes with extra max ammo, so single sentry is on par in terns of total ammo*damage. It doesn't help that single sentry's damage bonus is relatively small compared to what base damage + Defender already has. Plus, single Defender sentry covers less terrain than two.

I will say, first off: ROCK AND STONE! Second, the great thing about drg is that you can take it at any speed you want, ranging from a hazard level 1, were problems are basically nonexistent, to haz 6, where the gameplay shown in the video is still probably not good enough. My point being, drg, and all 4 classes, are completely moldeable to your play style, you could turn engi into the tf2 engi, play sea world tycoon 2, or be the doomsayer.

I think the video's gameplay is good enough for haz 5, it's the modded difficulties that go to haz 6 that make things really crazy.
One thing I wish you elaborated more on was the potential of the Platform Gun.
The Driller is commonly known as a strong class, because he can shape the world around him. But what's often overlooked is the Engi's potential. Especially with upgrades, you can create bunkers, similar to the driller, can also create certain chokes by controlling enemy path finding and (you touched on it) create very efficient and helpful routes for you and your team to traverse.
While those are upgrades, fall damage reduction and bug repellent are two extremely useful and versatile upgrades. Really, the way you can shape an arena to your benefit in DRG with the help of the Platform Gun is truly astonishing and EXACTLY what engineering is about. And in my opinion also the one tool that really distinguished having someone in your team that plays as an engi, and having someone that IS an engi.
Honestly when I saw DRG for the first time, the main hook to me was being able to shape the caves to your needs, and it never gets old 5 years later. I've been playing Engi more, and the platform gun has become my favorite mobility tool, just because of how versatile it is compared to everything else.
I can't believe you didn't mention the Jag at all among Engineer's offensive weapons. While the Gunslinger allows for more aggressive hand to hand combat, the Jag allows more aggressive... everything! You can get your buildings up so fast you don't have to worry nearly as much about careful placement, so much as constantly hammering on the pressure for the enemy team.
When I first played DRG, I assumed I wouldn't like engineer because I was never a good engineer in TF2. But it ended up being my favourite class by far, I can barely bring myself to play the other classes.

3: sentries can be upgraded before missions with weapon mods, and overclocks 10:00
4: I could be misunderstanding you, but both sentries on stock take 8 seconds to build combined 10:09

(this isn't a misconception) for any new players:
12:00 this platform trick won't work unless you have the tier 2 upgrade on the platform gun called "Plastcrete Mk2", which reduces fall damage when you fall on top the platform.
1. Sorry, I probably worded this badly. I mean that the longer you're in the mission, the more at risk you are of losing due to the ongoing waves. (Though admittedly, I thought the waves got more difficult over time)
2. Shoot, I'm sorry for messing this up.
3. I had an entire section written and recorded discussing this piece of DRG, but ended up cutting it cause it distracted too far from the point of my video.
4. I was referring to how much each sentry takes individually, but I probably could have worded it better.

The best part about DRG's engineer is how you can deal out a ton of damage without actually doing much. Sentries, the lok-1, and the shredders do all the work for you

14:39 In a way, DRG takes a sort of, blitzkrieg approach to gameplay, in a sense that scout pushes the front forward, engineer follows the scout and supports him, while gunner and driller are slow moving but unstoppable wall thats pushing pushing the glyphids back.
Gunner dominates through firepower and staying power, Driller through committing every war crime in the book with his repertoire, lol.
Simply put, in either game, the engineer does one thing and one thing only.

9:55 - Stock engineer gets only One Sentry - you have the option of taking the Gemini system of two sentries (and slightly more maximum ammo) or the MKII model which has slightly longer range and higher damage as well as a a bit more ammo capacity.
IMHO: Missions that will have you set up in a single area can benefit from two sentires. While missions that require you move around more (mining, egg hunt in particular) might be better met with a single sentry.
Also, its unfair to say they aren't upgradable.. the DRG sentries can be upgraded, but it is done between missions and changes the sentries behavior (faster construction, armor breaking, stun, more ammo, etc) without requiring extra time or effort during game play.
as someone who mains both characters in either game:
the similaraties of both characters is having that sentry watching your back, it brings a playstyle where you constantly have something protecting you and can rely on not having to be puting out damage yourself to handle enemies, letting you focus on your own survival rather than killing enemies.
both also reward knowing the terrain, (in DRG that is the case for all classes but engineer benefits the most) to know where the best places to set your buildings and hold a defencive postion the platform gun also compounds on that spacial awareness of knowing where the best places are to set your platforms while in TF2 knowing the optinal positions for where the dispencer and teleporter go, somewhere close enough to the fight to be useful, but not so close as to be in danger.
also the default DRG turret you only get one, but the first upgrade is a choice of either getting a better turret or have 2 with a larger ammo pool, every engi ive seen in the game prefers to have 2 guns and its easy to see why when you consider the coverage they get
Also in DRG the driller can make a whole bunker using his drills, him and the engineer can make quick work of almost any problem
As someone who likes to play Engi and Pyro in tf2, I feel like Driller is the class that interests me the most for DRG. Haven't played the game yet, I need a better computer, but Driller is probably who I'll start with first
You should definitely play Driller and Engineer if you like Engi and Pyro in tf2, and you should at least try Scout and Gunner, because they're like Scout and Heavy from tf2, respectively. I hope you have fun with it when you do start playing!
I think that maybe you should also compare the scout from tf2 to the scout from deep rock galatic, they have almost the same situation with the 2 engineers fron both games

Another difference is in TF2 the sentry is really the axis of the engineer's perimeter, and he's focused on keeping it topped off with ammo and armor. In DRG resupply is much harder to come by, the engineer simply must keep moving and deploying his sentries smartly. If you over use them you'll run out of ammo before you really need it
I like that you went the route of using two very different engineers to describe aspects of engineering. Both are very well designed engineers. I can totally see these two getting along
This is a great video, there are many types of engineers with different goals and methods to reach them.
In addition to this video, something else I’ve had on my mind when it comes to engineer classes in games:
It bothers me when people call the engineer class in one game a ripoff/copy of the class from another game just for existing and/or having a turret, as if it’s a unique patented concept. The potential for versatility is theoretical limitless for engineers, but in shooter games, you want something useful, having some kind of support fire is almost mandatory to balance out your other mechanics, a gun to watch you back while you’re completing the objective. Engineers might try to accomplish either similar or different goals, and if that requires similar equipment to another for whatever reason, does it matter that much? It’s not as big of a problem as people make it out to be. Realistically, the engineer can only have as much useful versatility as the game allows. If people still don’t like it, then they could always be a good engineer and solve the “problem”.
Honestly I liked both because they’re just distinct enough that it doesn’t feel like they’re copy pasted even though drg engi design wise is def a homage to tf2 engi, in the end though it’s fuel for my interest in playing pet classes in any game I can find them in which I didn’t realize both engis fit into till this video unintentionally made me realize
The engi in DRG can have up to 8 (technically 5) summons in the vanilla game. 2 sentries, Bosco (single-player exclusive), 4 shredder drones (1 SSG), and Steeve. Very fun to max your passive damage as an engi in DRG
one similiarity between the two games is that both engineers are usually the biggest damage dealers on the team when they have optimal sentries employed. In my 1400 hours of DRG its been rare to see an engy not place 1st in kills, and thats usually because theyre a greenbeard still learning the game.
I love this video so much as I spend hundreds of hours playing both engines but typically reversing the roles, I often play aggressive jag engineer in tf2 and bunker making in deep rock. But this video makes good comparisons and explains the differences well
I never thought about it that way, but now that you said it, I can't help but see it.
The interesting thing is that I have played both games quite much and i main in both engi.
In TF2 I am pretty aggressive but in DRG I switch constantly between very agressive and more passive fortress builder type gameplay.
I just really love the DRG Engi. While the TF2 Engi does not really click with me, the DRG Engi just allows me to be as effective as you can be without much planning beforehand. And yet you still are rewarded for planning ahead. But most of this comes from his versatility. He can make pathways, barriers or just waypoints with just the platform alone, his turrets take away pressure of enemies, his grenades all serve a different function, unique for each situation you want to deal with. And then his guns. He has just 6 guns, yet they alone can do anything you need them to. But you have to be prepared. Meanwhile TF2s Engi is more focused on something. He is inside his own niche. And while he can be played outside, he is designed for that niche. Thats why I love DRG so much. Every class has its niche, but it is so broadly defined that you can still do so much with your freedom

I like to play booth engineers because I my self "am a engineer" (not a professional one, but I program and design stuff) and its kinda of a dream, more like a fantasy, to be a smart guy that also fights using *my own technology*. Thats the reason why I almost always play engis in games that haven them, its more about the fantasy; but I find booth of them fun in their own ways. And even though you beatfully described, they are very diferent even with the same name, but the consistent thing that I love on them is the use of advanced military technology to fight.

A fun thing about DRG's Engineer is that his turrets, while requiring active building, can be assisted and sped up in the building process by your teammates, even if they're not Engineers! Doesn't happen too often, naturally; it can get hectic in the caves of Hoxxes, and most times your effort is better spent covering the Engineer while they deploy their turrets.

My favorite part about DRG's sentries is that they have hit boxes but aren't obstacles for the players, so they can block proyectiles. This is useful against the Hiveguard Dreadnaught, which, when vulnerable, shoots multiple ground-level proyectile bombs on her surroundings.

Then there's the widowmaker-gunslinger Enineer with a pocket medic dominating the lobby, and on the other side the LMG turret-Smartrifle-shreddernade Engineer.
Ya can always flip the playstyles around, which displays another trait that most Engineers find very useful: versitility.
Nice video! My favorite classes in both DRG and TF2 are the Engineer, but they are certainly quite different in play style despite their same name. That being said, I do enjoy gunslinger engineer a bit more than normal wrench engineer in tf2.

In DRG, players often forget for the whole mission they have a sentry. That never happens in TF2.
It happens less in Drilldozer, Caretaker or Dreadnought missions, but very often on Morkite runs.
I think it's important to moention that the platform gun is pretty much the only way to *create* matter in DRG. There are countless ways to destroy things, but the engineer has the exclusive ability to build a bridge where there was nothing, for example
Based on the information and how you are presenting it, it sounds to me that the titles should be switch (drg is the munitions expert and tf2 is support) as drg focus is on guns and combat where as tf2 has support structures and focuses on being the backbone for the team where they can go heal and be protected.

Whats great a about drg engineers toolkit is that often times the engineers weapons have special interactions with his turrets.
May it be overloading a turret with a shotgun shot, causing it to fire an extremly powerful AOE explosion. Or using plascrete catalyst to allow you to set little traps that deal massive damage to enemies that just so happened to get to close to your plascrete
The best way I can describe TF2 engi's role is someone who ensures that ground is not lost while defending and prevents you from losing ground while attacking.

everyone calls tf2 engineer "engi" for short, so I hereby propose that the drg engineer be given the affectionate nickname of "'neer"

Teleporter would not be bad, a more powerful but slow building sentry is still balanced.
A dispenser in DRG would make as infinite ammo supply, in other words, infinite Fat Boys.
Plataforms would not be too OP in TF2, just make them the secondary slot tool and replace the teleporters.

I actually love paying both, engineers in games fascinate me in all their forms, whether they focus on supportive means or aggressive war tactics, they always have something interesting to bring t the table. if I ever hear about there being a class of engineer in a game I'm excited for, you can be sure playing and studying what I can do with it are the very fist interactions I'm going t have, laving even a games story on the backburner until I feel satisfied.

like once you where to put your buildings, it becomes more a game of efficiency, multitasking, and helping your team be more efficient
the one difference that i can see is that tf2 engineer has more 'chores' (putting up buildings, repairing/replacing them etc)
in tf2 you can even 'building boost', which parallels drg's platform gun to a certain degree

I feel like the Engineer classes from Battlefield 4 and Garden Warfare 2 might have fit in here somewhere as well. After all, there's no main like an Engie main, no matter which game.

Actually, in DRG all classes has it's role in raid depending on what Overclocks and upgrades you build before entering a cave. It goes to Engies as well. Sometimes you need to use Tier 2 turret instead of 2 Tier 1 turrets, because you utilize Whip Shot with Mini-shells Overclock, which increases your ammo but cuts your damage drastically. And there's where you utilize it by standing around your centry and shooting small bugs and turret, prioritizing it's targets with lazer pointer. But that's one of types of Deffensive types of playstyles. There's also Electrocuting and Arc Gemini builds, which utilizes crowd control with low direct damage. Or there's Plaster Explosive build, when you use platforms not as deffensive or mobile option but as offensive tool to blow it up with Lazer Gun. Or you use two different Overklocks depending on your target priorities, like Jet Fuel rockets and Fat Boy (first to deal with single targets fast, the second one is for wiping out a swarm of regular enemies with large AoE damage and DoT effect, which is kinda bad against the "big boys").
And there's also different utilization of grenades too. Some for tight space. Some for dragging attention and crowd control. Some for deffence purposes while you at something else. That's why DRG's classes, being less in type, has so different playstyles based on how you prepared and how you use your equipment. Use it wrong - and you most likely die on a mission. A lot.

Arguably the gunner in DRG is the one who doesn’t need the engineer as much as the scout or driller, since driller would need the engineer to seal his bunkers when he creates them and scout really needs him when mining the high minerals
The gunner just needs the engineer because he lacks an efficient movement option
It's funny how I main both engineers in both games. I just love supporting my teammates and having a swiss army knife of tools for any situation.
You voiced what I was always thinking about the DRG Engineer. His job is to be a problem solver.
Once we were in a cave, where the ceiling was in a very very odd angle so the bugs where coming straight down on our necks. I used the platform's repellent to make that path less suitable, so I basically cut a path into the path finding of the bugs. That was the one way we could win, but I still needed the c4 from the driller to create our actual safespace, make some room so we're not directly up against our refinery.
This is also just the large scale version of the kind of solutions I usually build when we need to hole up somewhere, adapted to this extreme scenario. I don't think I have the picture anymore, but that seemingly random assortment of platforms was carefully planned out.
This kind of stuff is what you do constantly. If you do it correctly, nobody will notice it and will think it to be the most natural thing.
You solve problems, but you can also run out of ammo quite fast, so you can't go all out rambo.
A limit and a person produce two things: a solution and an engineer.
These two do a good job but the Engineer in Factorio is the best example in my opinion

I main both, and a lot of both is knowing how to manipulate the environment to boost your team, tf2 engie works with the map given to best keep the enemy team down and his own team healthy and armed while moving them to the front line quickly, DRG engie changes the environment to better suit his team by building stairs and bridges as well as platforms to reach new places while also leveraging a small army's worth of firepower to hold an area, they're not terribly different to me

Its really funny the moment I saw video of gameplay for engie I knew it was tif the moment I saw the outfit n golden wrench.
Under rated tftuber. Spams voice lines in a really good way during combat, and really experienced.
I don't know much about engineer in tf2 but in drg ROCK AND STONE the engineer just with his platform gun alone gives him so much depth and teamplay. He can manipulate the terrain completely, he has great mobility and can make a fucking kaizo mario course through the whole fucking cave.
