- An uncomfortable history of racism in British Columbia and Canada needs to be confronted if we are to truly grasp the way our past has shaped us, and to move past prejudices.
Chinese Canadians have faced job discrimination in Canada. Even today, being a Chinese doesn't get you interviews.
It’s funny that almost all FOB Chinese people in British Columbine deny the existence of racism in Canada, and claim that they’ve never experienced racism in Canada. And the ones that come forward and complain about racism they regularly experience are ALL CANADIAN-BORN-CHINESE
There's always job discrimination against the avrg Chinadians. Only those born in rich and influential families may land a decent job or even voted in a political post. But how many rich Chinese families could and would come to Canada back then?
It’s definitely a painful part of Chinese Canadian history. My grandfather immigrated to Montreal in 1918 at the age of 17. He had to pay $500 head tax (equivalent to about 2 years salary or the purchase of 2 houses according to The Canadian Encyclopedia). He died in 1959, way before redress was paid out to the living from that generation. He never heard the formal apology either. 😢

It s sad to me when people compare Canada to Apartheid South Africa. South Africa was inspired specifically by Canadian Indian affairs structure and of reservations. Vancouver Sun should follow up on this. We must all decolonize our minds and see Canadian history.

I'm so glad I migrated to Australia as a child in the early 90s when multiculturalism was enforced (I'm ethnically Chinese). I feel really privileged!

There is nothing we can do to change what took place a hundred years ago. Receiving an apology from harper was an insult in my opinion. What went on then is why its not going on today.
That sounds about right coming from a middle-aged white dude.
You're right, it's not 'going' on today but the scars that it left still run deeper than ever in Canadian society. There's still numerous amounts of racism today as well, so if you shouldn't apologize, and take responsibility for 'past actions'. Then at least take responsibility for todays.
@@messiahofthefirst.3415 I agree. I think you have to put yourself in the shoes of those who have been discriminated against, and imagine how you feel. Too many white people (I am also white btw) are just dismissing what happened to people of color and just saying "that's in the past." The past affects them in the future. Chinese Canadians and Indigenous Canadians suffered, and that doesn't just go away because it happened decades ago.
@@PiercingChild Exactly! As a (w)Asian myself it pains me a little to see some of these comments assuming everything is now ok, and no one's getting hurt or stereotyped, and that's enormously wrong. Even at my age of 14 I've been targeted a lot because of silly stuff such as my race, skin colour, eyes, etc. We need to treat the roots if we want to truly fix the problem.

Well, your forefathers sure benefited from this past segregation in terms of racial political votes to office and unfair economic competition leaving a bunch disenfranchised Chinadians for many generations. Harper's apology is well-deserved by the Chinese community at large.
