I will never have the opportunity to come to Korea; however, looking at this has caused me to want to shine in the space where I find myself even more. I AM a beautiful 83 year old woman inside and out. I AM the only me there will ever be. Thank you Millicent. 🥰

I love that you are not quick to take offense by every little thing. I visited Korea. I quickly learned the difference between curiosity and blatant disrespect. But either way I just rolled with it and didnt let it get to me. I had a blast and met some awesome people. I felt comfortable being myself.

And you’re definitely right~ I find that it IS easy to learn and see the difference between curiosity and disrespect~ However, most of the time people either couldn’t care less that you’re here😅 or they try to take a quick peek! I’ve VERY rarely come into contact with disrespect, as you heard in the video!
I’m grateful you had a similar experience and found comfort within being the real you here☺️✨
      Also thanks for watching~~🧡

If anyone were to touch my hair without permission, especially an adult, I would challenge them and show them my annoyance/discomfort. As it is universal knowledge that one should not invade someone's personal space - more so if that person is a stranger. It is almost as if, being black, you do not or should not be afforded the same rights as any other white foreigner. This is unacceptable, disrespectful and disgraceful behaviour - irrespective of whether the person causing the discomfort is adult or child - with where the latter is concerned, it would be expected for the parents to admonish them about such actions, explaining to them that it is regarded as impolite.

the woman at the store who touched your hair then ran off giggling should have awakened the next morning with a huge thick afro on her head and nothing she could do to straighten it out! LOL

I love this video, Im coming to Korea next year with my 3 younger kids and they are mixed (half Nigerian Half White British) they all have afro hair and they know Im a protective mother to the point they call me Godzilla with a handbag, so how I would handle someone randomly touching their hair I dont know because here in the UK as you will know Millicent that just isnt a done thing. Also the tinder part Ive been using an app called Korea Social and omg Korean men are so direct with their line of questioning something you dont also get in the UK, like of the guys that have been chatting to me their second question has always been how much do you get paid? whats your salary? to me thats no ones business unless Im in a serious relationship, also trying to work out the genuine from the fake. Any tips greatly received lol.

Thank you for watching Liz! And come, you will have a great out here!
To be honest, I do not really think that anyone would touch your children's hair, as your family would be as a group rather than a lone individual. However, I still think the chances are pretty low for things to happen even as an individual (just in my opinion)!
But, you're right! Nowadays, I don't think much would happen in the UK. But, when I was younger, I wouldn't have completely agreed with you, as I've honestly had the same experiences in the UK...(oops)! As for the app that you are using, I've personally never heard of it, however if you're talking with Koreans then you will definitely get a wonderful insight to the country before you visit! As for the money question, I've noticed that it is a big thing here in the east, as when using eastern dating apps that question is usually featured too. So, I guess it's just another huge culture difference.
I think some Korean people who have either travelled or lived abroad and after having interacted with westerners would know that we do not really favour questions like that haha, but that's all I have on that really. If you're speaking with anyone and they ask you, just kindly tell them where that you're from, the question isn't really the best. If they are 'about it' they'll understand and respect it. If they get salty, then you know to keep it moving haah!
Thanks for watching~ I really appreciate it!

Yes it’s definitely something to get used to all the stares 👀 my experience is in Japan. I don’t let it get to me anymore I just feel like I’m famous when they stare lol I also don’t get the hair touching without permission imagine if we did that to them because they have straight hair. They would probably go crazy and call the police 🙄 I like how you said “I’m not Korean right” that sums it up for people to realize duh I’m different I’m not from this country other races and countries exist you know…

I know what you mean, and you're right, it doesn't bother me any more either! However, for those days when you're in a bad mood, then and only then it feels uncomfortable all over again. As for the hair touching.... it'll never be cool. But yes, I just try my best to tell my students that certain things are not ok and that people will feel uncomfortable if they continue to do so.
Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching~~

I am a 19 year old black girl that lives in Florida. I was a military brat that was raised in San Diego California, and El Paso Texas. I always grew up in a diverse cultural space. And in Texas I was the only black girl in a school full of Mexicans. But I didn’t feel excluded.
Now living in Florida it’s diverse kinda but majority is white & black ppl here. I honestly wouldn’t mind going to Korea because I get the same treatment here. EVERYWHERE I go I get stared at. So I look at the floor because I hate making eye contact. I often get asked out by men of all ranges, women to. I started to get compliments daily. Then it turned into ppl just coming up touching me. My clothes, my hair like lady ✋🏾 back up.
I’ve been followed around a store being recorded before. I got tired of the harassment at that clothing store in the mall so I quit that job 😭✋🏾.
Not to mention once I got to work one day a old man tried to get me to get in his car and he followed me after I told him I didn’t need help. But my manager saved me THANKFULLY. People always come up in my personal space when they could be few feet’s apart to ask a question PLUS CORONA! 😭😷 now at my new job I work with majority oler men and older women. I’m the youngest and one of the smallest. I’m telling you I don’t have to do much work.
All my guy friends are frustrated that I turned them down but I’m literally not attracted to anyone in this city. And the two that I did like only like white girls💀. And the other was toxic. So atleast I’ll finally be attracted to someone ig🤷🏾‍♀️ and I have multiple of reason why this city isn’t it. PLUS it’s the most dangerous city IN Florida. I want to move so bad.😣

I am from Florida too and it's not as bad as you're describing it to be. There are a few bad characters here and there but a majority of the people here are decent. Maybe it's your perspective.

I was also thinking about how being a woman of color will affect me in South Korea. I am a mixed race person from Africa with a very light skin small facial features. I have small eyes and often people will comment on it and point out that this makes me look Asian. But for me I'm happy in my skin and embrace everything about me...

    Hey Millicent,
Loved your video. I wanted to visit South Korea with my mother (we love K-Dramas) next year for about a week. If we stay at a hotel where there are lots of foreigners, do you think it will be safe as black people?

    • @millicentsimonsays

Thank you so much for watching! I super appreciate it!☺️✨
As for coming to Korea, come!! You will love it! There’s so much to do and see!
In my honest opinion, I think you will be safe regardless of wherever you are/stay! I’ve been to Seoul many times and I honestly don’t need to think about whether there are foreigners around to make me feel safer! You can have the safest and funnest time in Korea without having to worry about your melanin! So, in my personal opinion, I think you should just book your hotel wherever, and focus on your facilities and location, rather than if it’s in a foreigner-rich area~~
You and your mother will be more than fine when visiting Korea, and I hope when you do arrive you feel comfortable enough to spend more time focusing on where to eat rather than being black~~!🤎☺️✨
I wish you all the best, and keep watching those K-Dramas Daniel!!✨

Where hair products for black hair are concerned, you could try making your own - buy a cheap hand blender, use any vegetable oil - coconut, almond, avocado, almond, jojoba or butters - mango, shea, cocoa and whip these together and viola! you have some lovely homemade hair cream - try it. As for buying specific shampoos for black hair - any high end shampoo/conditioner - any shampoo/conditioner will do - read the ingredient/description. Black hair is the same as any hair - keratin - it just happens to be curlier/fragile than European or Asian hair. Mouse, wax and hairspray can produce the same results once you buy the right ones. Where styling products are concerned then one may encounter problems but being creative/innovative goes a long way to helping yourself.

As for Korean, I used website like Duolingo to get me started, as well as listened to Talk To Me in Korean (TTMIK)'s podcasts and watched their grammar and vocabulary videos here o UA-cam! After I could string simple sentences together, I moved to HelloTalk and began attempting to speak with real people! I did this all back in England once I decided that I'd move to Korea! The wonderful thing is on HelloTalk you'll more than likely make friends in the process, so you'll have opportunities to practice and speak in Korean daily as well as make some incredible friends!!
Make sure you listen to which ever Korean music tickles your fancy! I don't really like K-Pop (🙊 - don't shoot meㅋㅋㅋ), but I love alternative and rock, so I listen to them daily, as well as watch Korean movies and the occasional K-Drama to hear the things that I've practiced and learned in the right situations!!🧡✨
I hope these all helped!! Get started and you won't regret it! Speaking in other languages is crazy sexy and cool and it'll instantly improve your confidence!
Once again, great question and thanks for asking and watching!☺️✨

There are koreans who have melanated skin - meaning darker skin colour - their skin, gums, lips are darker than the rest of their bodies - so it is surprising that you should be asked such questions and it should be obvious. I am aware that many Koreans bleach their skin to remove such natural traces of the darker areas of their skin.

Hey Milli, I usually never comments but I love your videos and I really wanted to say that you're doing a great job with these vids😊! Concerning the "I'm not Korean" part although it may be the simplest way of explaining your difference to the kids, I feel it's a bit incorrect when it comes to kids who are black koreans bc they might think that they are "not korean" or other kids might bully them saying that they are not korean bc of their different skin tone which is wrong, they are black and korean.

Thank you for also writing what you did! I love how you worded it and you’re correct actually! One reason why I always tell my students that I’m not Korean is because they all know I was born in England and I’ve also told them that I’m half Jamaican and half Guyanese. However, it definitely doesn’t put them in the best position when it comes to speaking with black Korean children!
