Best Defense is Situational Awareness and Avoiding Problems. If a person is older and retired maybe traveling in pairs or small groups. The Buddy system. Having a Buddy around scares off most predatory bad people.
In theory that sounds wonderful but it really isn't practical when you live in a vehicle. You can't stay hypervigilant 24/7 like you are when you go out for a walk. Yes, you can have cameras installed around the perimeter of your vehicle. As for the buddy system, that works for some people but for loners the buddy system is so opposed to their very nature.
Be aware of your surroundings and pick your spots carefully. Form a group and travel with your friends. Have a plan when things go wrong. Always let your family friends know where you are and check with them on a regular basis. Make sure you can make a lot of noise to alert people when you are in trouble. Know that you are safer out in the wilderness than you are in any city. And last be kind to yourself and let go of your stress.
Ty for taking the time to share your valuable information & experiences. Back in 2016 when I first got my van I had ordered your book & saw one of your videos, at some point, on safety & recovery gear. With your advice I bought a tow strap. Never used it all these years but last night I was so glad I had it. I towed my son's van off a side road to a point where a wrecker was able to retrieve & transport it further. Again Ty so much for all you do & recommend.
Watching your channel made me perfectly comfortable car camping with my puppy in my Subaru Crosstrek for a week in a hospital parking lot while my wife was recovering from surgery.
Bear spray on hip, knife around neck, firearm on other hip or on backpack chest strap. No problems yet with four legged or two legged predators in the wild, but am prepared if need be.
Stopping power is the key. From viewing this, I'd guess stopping power is, optimistically, about 30 percent, given it MAY produce a cloud and that enough of the cloud MAY get into the attacker's eyes. The main thing to remember is if an attacker has a gun, this could be more dangerous than nothing, since once a gun-like object is seen in your hands, you will most likely be shot at with a REAL gun.
A lot of the videos I see them shooting wood or metal, never see them shooting shirts and gelatin, plus if you shoot them in the ribs, the cloud of smoke may be blocked by their jawline too.
Like people are saying the best self defense is being aware of your surroundings. That said, people living in cars face two main threats. The first being opportunism, which would likely only happen when criminals know you're away from your vehicle and can steal your stuff without being confronted. The second threat, which is much more serious is someone who is actually intent on doing you harm. Pepper spray might work on an opportunistic thief, but it's not what I'd want as my last line of defense against someone intent on doing me harm. The safety of you, your friends, family and pets is ultimately up to you. If you value the well being of those people, you'd be wise to consider a pistol that could actually stop a real threat.
Alternative weapuns..love this 🔥💖 man's ability to create needed tools/utility/protection is unlimited. Thinking about the Amazon indigenous folk & those little homemade sharp points with a substance that paralyzes, or worse- I mean, it's about surviving & really love your channel guys.
I would like to also add the fact that these pistols are mainly to "slow" an attacker or animal down...not to render them unconscious...allowing YOU time to get away or get other needed help. And these are still very dangerous pistols. You can even have them "modded" to increase the firing Power...death can still occur if you were per say to shoot a person directly in the EYES, so aim for the upper chest area.
I would definitely carry one of these. Just knowing that getting hit by a paintball can leave a scar. This probably will leave something along with pepper. I do a lot of hiking and having this even for animal protection would give me some sound mind.
In some states, you have to use something like this. It isn't ideal, but it has its place. But on the Appalachian trail or in a similar big cat, meth head and bear country, I wouldn't rely on it. I prefer a 10mm or bigger firearm. If I hadn't had mine, I wouldn't be here.
I bought a .22 pistol for $300 and that's what I would use. Like Brian, I lean towards cheap and I'd never spend $300 on what is basically a toy. If I need to defend myself, I'm not betting my life on a toy.
These (expensive) devices have so many weaknesses, I recommend against them to family & friends. 01. Being CO2 powered, they fail as a ready weapon. Unless you reload the CO2 cartridge AT LEAST once a week, it will be less than worthless when needed. The gas ALWAYS leaks. 02. Efficiency & effectiveness are affected by wind, temperature, and humidity. If use them, practice often and examine the seals and ammo often. 03. They can still be be a useful part of your defense. If you are not alone, one of you can use a pepperball gun and another can be backup with a firearm. 04. Peperballs are not as potent-on-target as a gel spray. Be ready to follow-up you're attack with a serious weapon. CRITICAL REMINDER: Pepper products do not affect everyone like they do in the videos. Drugs, mental state, training/experience, and even simple biology significantly reduce the effect. (personnel experience)
Thank you for this idea. Something to think about. If nothing else...could get se of us to be more comfortable shooting Something...becoming familar with protection mode. God Bless
"Keeping gun safety in mind" wouldn't it be safer to lean the plywood board target somewhere where there are no windows? That was fun and informative, anyway.
The .68 “sabre” looks a LOT like the tippmann TiPX paintball pistol.. it would be worth the price to me to be able to fire paintballs to practice. Would also double as a paintball pistol which is fun
We carry a Byrna on our van, we’re older and running is no longer an option. We feel more secure since we have the option to launch at least six pellets which will definitely hurt who/what without lethal consequences as we shuffle away! I also keep it near at home because our neighborhood has a significant coyote problem and smaller dogs n cats are their staple diet. Since we live in California we traveled to Arizona to purchase the pepper balls which are illegal to sell here.
One thing you should consider is have a law enforcement officer come onto the show, interview them about what is the best way to defend yourself under human threats and animal threats. Law officer may not have all the ins and outs of defending against animals so best to find an authority on that. Do this for each of the 50 states or U.S. continental states that you can drive through. Have them run self defense examples that are easy to follow, easy to perform, so that viewers can practice them while in their rig or still at home before the head out. Also have these experts go over the best ways to deal with hairy situations that may develop or something that you got yourself into. Everyday things plus issues that are more unique to the camper/vehicle dweller lifestyle.
Always love a safety video. Practically everything is illegal here on the east coast, NJ and north. Amazon and others won't even ship here. Still educational and fun to watch demonstrations. Thanks Bob!
Good video, good presentation. Would have been better to see a volunteer to act as attacker to see actual effectiveness. Having personally taken courses in defensive spray, i do not feel this would be effective on an aggressive attacker simply because a person would need get the released content into the attackers face so it could be inhaled or into the eyes of the attacker to slow them down or hopefully deter them completely. In an emergency situation the attacker may be missed completely by an inexperienced shooter. I would suggest the can of defense spray, large one to keep in vehicle and smaller can to carry on person. Thats just my personal view, i wish everyone safety no matter what they choose.
Just a note for those who don't know. Some senior folks live in multistory apartments and are not allowed to have "firearms." These might be allowable for them depending on where they live. With no back door, and no security in the lobby, seniors are at a disadvantage in the case of a break-in. These could be a reasonable tool to have.
I've been watching your videos for awhile. Glad to have came across alot of your work. I plan to soon be nomad. I gave my belongings awhile I feel way better without them it's just lonely doing it and wanting this life by myself.
In more than 50yrs I've never found the need because by the time you think of it it's already to late to use it and all these will do to a wild animal is make it mad
Guns definitely do sometimes reload themselves. My bf was cleaning his pistol, he always does a "dry fire " frist. It fired, bullet went through plaster and slat wall through the cornerof interior metal window frame and lodged in the corner of outer frame. The wall was not the typical drywall interior wall. But one of a 1930-50 home.
Both guns have a place that you could mount a weapon light for use at night. Olight brand sells a couple different ones. The Sabre looks like it's a good quality gun.
If I was traveling and spending the nights at Walmarts I would definitely have something like that. I would much rather stay at campgrounds though. I saw people with huge motor homes staying at Walmart. Why? These people spend 100’s of thousands for these motor homes but they’re too cheap to spend $50 to stay at a campground.
If people want to pull off the road for a few hours to sleep, and stock up on supplies at Walmart and using the bathroom b4 hitting the road ... that would make sense.
Easy on and off for a nights sleep plus they can get their supplies . No going into an office , driving through a campground and parking your rig in a spot they may not be a pull through . Saves time and money .
Being ex military I was a bit concerned at the handlling of weapons being less lethal means it's still can be lethal. Also I wonder how the pepper balls are effective if someone is wearing puffy clothes and like having the cardboard behind not working effectively on perpetrators
I have the umarex and like it because it doesn’t have a separate magazine to possibly drop. The umarex can be kept loaded without taking the magazine out
Its not just an opinion, its a fact. HDP50 has jamming issue because of the way they designed it. Get an HDR50 Gen4 instead (Gen3 HDRs and HDPs are unsafe, a lot of them explode in people's hands.)
I have the Byrna launcher. They sell "eco" rounds for practice which dissolve (and leave no trace). The pepper rounds are illegal in California. Byrna has color choices and some look more like a real gun (for good or ill). I'm pleased with the Byrna. I want non-lethal but with the option of it LOOKING lethal. That said, I've never pulled it out. I live where I see deer kills out where I'm walking/parking. I definitely don't want to kill any animal, but I feel safer knowing I have this option (deep in the boot of my van).
Suggestion that folks watch video review of Umarex 4te HDX, a shotgun version of the 68 caliber. Possibly a better option for this type of self defense. One review a guy shows the damage a rubber ball did to his thigh, OUCH! The best defense: awareness, listen to your gut, and wisdom. Because even with a traditional firearm, wisdom is required. The aftermath, consequences, can be worse than the initial incident.
I like to carry a boat horn I got at Walmart for about $10. I carry it when I walk the dogs so stray dogs dont fight my dogs. My female pitt/rat terrier mix hates dogs and it has been a problem.
Interesting discussion, it would seem to me depending on where you travel you may come upon a bear or mountain lion & the Bear spray would be better for both animals & humans. Do you agree?
Has anyone considered having spray nozzles installed by their doors (to spray outside) filled with bear spray in case an intruder decides to break in? The owner would activate the spray inside their vehicle.
That might be an ideal, as long as it could be deployed with the windows closed so you wouldn't have to worry about wind direction; also, you'd have to be totally sure that the person was actually planning on trying to rob you n not just passing by the vehicle. Although if you activated it n then called police, the person/criminal is probably going to swear up n down that they were "just walking by when you attacked them with your bear spray"😢 ....potententially getting yourself into trouble &/or sued by some dip-- who was the actual criminal to begin with(???)
I think really missing the mark. You can get a select fire paintball gun with a refillable tank that will fire way better than these anemic toys. Put the paint balls in one of those.
Owning firearms, I don't know that I would trust those devices. I don't know how much it would deter someone. I think the Saber looks too much like a toy to visually deter someone. They might think it's something like a Nerf gun. I'd almost trust a BB pistol, which looks and feels real. Consider that option. It would also hurt a lot more, and cost less. Probably less legal concerns, but realize that it looks like a real firearm, and don't point it at anyone, because they could treat it as a real gun. So someone could use a real firearm against you. This is worst case scenario. You're just hoping to outdo the person attacking you. I would also think you could use a slingshot for the same effect, but be less threatening than someone holding what could be considered a real firearm. I just bought two slingshots, one a Daisy P51 and a SimpleShot Torque. A slingshot can use non-lethal or possibly lethal rounds, depending on the targeted area of the body. You could probably even use these rounds in a slingshot. You could take out a bird or rabbit for food, or a snake for defense. Larger animals could be difficult. I'll take my 45 ACP for bear, mountain lions, wolves and bobcats. I've seen a bear on the trail once before. Probably closer on the trail a couple times.
Maybe for black bear, coyotes or wolves...maybe. But, against an armed human? No way. I prefer to keep my firearms. Thanks for the review Bob and Brian.
It wont hurt much if they're wearing loose denim or leather jacket and not under the influence of something or intoxicated. At least with the bear spray I have I'll have the solid metal canister to hit them with instead of plastic if all else fails
💯Thank YOU for this presentation.💡Really worth anyones time to WATCH. I'd get 2 of the big Sabre guns. When needed, hold one in each hand and shoot the pepper balls and metal balls at the same time to the assailant. 🎯 🔫 Bang-bang. I can't afford that, but if I could I definitely would purchase 2 of those. Cheers to YOU ALL, Dear Ones 🙏 ✨.
I wasn't too impressed with these. I'd like to know more about the bear spray. But for a gun, I might choose a reg small Cal. Thanks for the video and including a woman's thoughts too. See you on next one.
I feel sorry for the person bringing trouble to my van. Happened once, at 2am someone tried to steal my gas. I reacted with such rage they were scared off in 10 seconds flat. I never saw anything but the back of their car but the mostly certainly saw me.
Interesting video thanks. Q U E S T I O N: How will one know that someone is going to be a problem for you and that they will need to be shot, while they are still that far away?
Also you have to prove clear and present danger to you or a loved one at 50 feet you can escape really I think if your in the mind set that needing a weapon to make YOU feel safe than maybe stay home
In my opinion, there are a lot of variables that limit the effectiveness of these types of weapons. I don't think I could settle for a "maybe" outcome.
Best Defense is Situational Awareness and Avoiding Problems. If a person is older and retired maybe traveling in pairs or small groups. The Buddy system. Having a Buddy around scares off most predatory bad people.
Totally agree - and as solo female - a dog! If I get a “bad vibe” from a place, I move..

I always have two friends with me, Smith & Wesson.😉
Be aware of your surroundings and pick your spots carefully. Form a group and travel with your friends. Have a plan when things go wrong. All good advice.
bought a umerex hdr .50 two years back. Love it and it WORKS.

AWESOME! Very few of us Nomads ever cover this topic. Good Job!!
Definitely being aware and prepared. Situational Awareness, also be familiar with the laws...

I'm happy to see that no ambulance widows were damaged in the making of this video. Good shooting gang.
I wish you guys would have tested it on a soft target and see if the pepper balls also burst.
Ann.
This is helpful.
You two make a great team hope to see more of you guys🙏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😎🏆
Thank you for sharing a woman's perspective!
Also good for spicing up some chili if you run out of spices on the road 👍

Very informative and something to think about. I enjoyed seeing the female perspective expressed along with the others. Thanks for sharing this.
Those guns are on the Kmart side of the less lethal variety
Love this. Non-Lethal and keeps you distant from the perp. I was waiting for you to shoot out the Ambulance windows. LOL!

Lifelite is a solid choice. It has a laser as well and shoots 60 feet.
I've been watching your videos for awhile. Glad to have came across alot of your work. I plan to soon be nomad. I gave my belongings awhile I feel way better without them it's just lonely doing it and wanting this life by myself.

#Grateful 🙏 love you guys, thank you, #mahalo
The thing to clean the barrel is there because paintballs tense of burst so that could be a problem if you use pepper balls

I've seen a guy shot with one it really packs a wallop in a lot of pain a lot of security guards carry them now
Pepper blaster has MUCH more force than the CO2 ones. It is like a baseball bat.
Interesting informative. Thanks
look into this, dual purpose for signalling and home defense...no one wants to be shot by a flare gun lol
Get an HDR50 Gen4 instead (Gen3 HDRs and HDPs are unsafe, a lot of them explode in people's hands.)
the regular bear spray has my vote and a regular whistle around my neck
( also if u want a marrine air horn .
And a marine flair gun )
Due to wind possibly blowing the powder in your direction, it's a NO for me. Great video and cool options though.
How about a SuperSoaker full of Tabasco Sauce?
Windows as a back stop?
Also I load mixed 3 pepper balls, 2 rubber/steel and 1 steel.
I am putting a variation of punji sticks in my build.
"Good luck" to anyone who forces himself inside.
Nice to know!
Opinions are like noses - you only pick your own 😊
Bear spray works fairly on humans and dogs. Having used it in self defense it works but no wind can be present.
Glad I live in Australia, no guns, no legal non lethal weapons, why, not needed.

Oh I got to have one of those
Glad you guys can aim fairly well, otherwise he'd need new windows
I would do the home defense gel
I’d definitely carry one but I wouldn’t carry it in public, especially around any LEO.
Definitely...why not?
Its non lethal and more compact than my old 12 gauge.

So for 300, id be looking at a tippmann A5 with a hopper full of riot balls / pepper ball mix. Full auto.
325 round so long rifle 22 long rifle 40 grain 20 bucks at Walmart

Buy good brands.......my shock gun stick backfired on me when i tested it.......well, at least i know now what it feels like....
Thank you for the great info!
Paintballs hurt when they hit you
It wont hurt much if they're wearing loose denim or leather jacket and not under the influence of something or intoxicated.
Q U E S T I O N:
How will one know that someone is going to be a problem for you and that they will need to be shot, while they are still that far away?
Oh I want to play with the toys plastic guns for adults
Those are way to big to carry for hiking. I have real gun that I would rather carry and be able to hike.
I have the pepper gel gun. Not the pellets.
I want one
Uhmm, yeah. This will be mistaken for a real firearm and will get you killed with return fire from someone.
Also you have to prove clear and present danger to you or a loved one at 50 feet you can escape really I think if your in the mind set that needing a weapon to make YOU feel safe than maybe stay home
I've come to the conclusion, that if I think I need gun, then I don't need to be there. Intuition.
Just train to run away really fast!
Good info. But I wouldn’t buy one. Mace and a real pistol is good for me.
I'm going to buy a mini bike first
In my opinion, there are a lot of variables that limit the effectiveness of these types of weapons. I don't think I could settle for a "maybe" outcome.
It seems to me ol Bob has shot some real pistols before. He probably has a Glock in his van.
