Garai's portrayal is a time traveling modern Emma created to make her more likable to people who wouldn't like 'Austen's Emma': she's too nice, too childish, and too unladylike in her manners for someone of Emma's rank and context.
Everything about the story of Emma and Knightley screams chaos- this whole love hexagon is on a whole other level with Emma, Knightley, Harriet, Mr. Martin, Mr. Churchill, and Jane
I feel Romola and Jonny Lee were perfect casting, they had such chemistry, there are times you believe they really are in love, I would love to see them in something else together, but that might spoil the illusion, I feel they are the best Emma and Knightley ever, I can see them having a long happy marriage, and a fantastic love life, probably having as many children as his brother and her sister, I have never felt that about any other pairing, and I have seen every version since 1972, as Emma has always been my favourite Austen novel, and Emma and Knightley my favourite couple much more than Elizabeth and Darcy, he was lowering his standards and she only fell in love with him when she saw how rich he actually was, she admits to Jane that she fell in love with him when she saw his house, that put me off her there and then, Emma and Knightley are equals, mind you Ann and Wentworth are a close second.
“He has urgent business…He has gone to London to get his hair cut.” *Knightley looks at Emma wondering why on earth she likes this idiotic man* “His hair cut?”
I was not prepared for that ending 😂 Their argument after Emma convinces Harriet to refuse Mr. Smith is my favorite in this version. The chemistry between them (Knightley & Emma) really stands out in that part.
I only have one complaint about this version, feel the ending would have been better, if when they are on the cliff top, they should have turned and kissed as the camera panned out.
I love the scene where Knightly says, the only married woman he could ever allow to invite who she wished to Donwell would be Mrs Knightley then looks at Emma, that certainly put Mrs Elton in her place, so many times he virtually tells Emma, but she just doesn't realise, that superior man who she can fall in love with she told Harriet about, has always been right there in front of her all the time.
I was feeling low last week, watching this always lifts me, as going into Emma and Knightleys world is magical, I watched the whole series 3 times in 2 days, but only this version, none of the others do that for me.
It was not underrated till that dreadful 2020 version, made for the modern audience, with the dreadful arrogant dominant Emma who stayed that way, turned knightley into a wimp, with all the crying, made it seem as if he was giving up Donwell would be dependent on Emma, If the woke writer had actually bothered to read the book she would have known, he would still be master of Donwell and that he had actually been taking care of Heartfield for years as her Father was not capable, so really he had always been looking after Emma and her Father.
Yes the costumes where far more inline with what a country lady of the time would wear than the Hollywood version, notice her sister who lives in London wore slightly more fashionable dresses, but still understated, as she is a lady, Mrs Elton on the other hand did not come from the same level of society, she is new money so overdressed, feel that is why she didn't like Emma because Emma and Knightley are both from landed gentry old families Old money established.
When Jonny Lee Miller played Edmund in Mansfield Park and then played Mr Knightley in Emma I'm sure we all know what the obvious choice is in terms of character played by the same actor!
I can watch Jonny Lee Miller as Edmund, but not Blake Ritson, all I can see is the sweaty fawning Elton, shows which one makes the better Austen hero, such a good actor have you seen him in Elementary that lasted 7 series.
No hate to Anya Taylor-Joy, who is one of my favorite actresses, but this adaptation of Emma is so much better. I found that the 2020 Anderson-esque adaptation was too stiff to translate the humor, here in this adaptation we can see Emma clearly being so childish and silly like the coddled little girl she is inside, and it's loads of fun to watch.
I have never seen this version of Emma. I’ve only ever seen the 1996 version. But I barely remember anything about it. I just finished reading the book for the second time. Emma and Knightley have such a funny relationship
@@KS-bk9nt Oh really? Well cool. I love the 1995 Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility so much that I doubt any adaptation will beat them but this version of Emma does seem the most accurate to the book. Emma and Knightley have the same goofy yet adorable chemistry that they do in the book
Oh I love this movie. It doesn't have anything to do with how much I love johnny lee miller. But I must tell you. That i've seen every episode of elementary at least three times
2020 version is much better. This one is way to modern is does not feel like something from its time period. Plus it was the only version that that took in consideration that Emma is a comedy.
@@manuellarodrigues4386 That is an interesting perspective. To me, the 2020 version is a parody with the production team trying to be just too clever. I can't see where the 2009 version could be considered too modern. The book has comedic elements but is much more, for example, in Jane Austen's acute observations of human behaviour. To me, the 2009 adaptation is a fine all-round production in that it is faithful to the substance of the book but uses the medium of film to retell and in parts enhance the story. It DOES contain comedic moments, but not of the laughing uncontrollably variety.
A large part of their relationship is just "Bestie no-" "Bestie YES" and I'm here for it.
Romola Garai killed it in this role. She nailed every aspect of the character.
I definitely wasn't crazy about her in this role, but I love Johnny Lee Miller as Mr Knightley.
@@StargazerLily82 Disagree with the first part and totally agree with the second part.
My favorite version of Emma!!
She made the character palatable.

This is hands down my favorite Emma 😂 It perfectly captured the best friends to lovers troupe and I love their exasperation at each other haha
Everything about the story of Emma and Knightley screams chaos- this whole love hexagon is on a whole other level with Emma, Knightley, Harriet, Mr. Martin, Mr. Churchill, and Jane
This is my favorite adaptation of Emma. Romola Garai, Johnny Lee Miller, Michael Gambon? I want to thank whoever put together this cast 🥰
same!! they were great

@@lindaframe216 Very strange seeing him in a modern role; wish we had seen her in much more
Same. All time fav, they were so good together.
Johnny Lee Miller was perfection as Mr. Knightly. His dance with Emma was beautiful.

Me:"yes."😂😎
Have lost count of how many times i have watched this version,

Mee too
Emma is my second favourite book after Jane Eyre, but this adaptation is my all-time favourite period tv drama. ❤❤❤
this adaptation really was super good! more people should see it.
Jane Eyre? It's kinda boring to me!
@@chathuperera906then it went right over your head.
JANE EYREEEEEEE
Such a good cast
These two nailed their characters
This is my comfort show.

ive never watched this version but i think i should
YOU ABSOLUTELY SHOULD!!
I love this adaptation so much and thank you for the compilation! It’s hilarious 😂
My favorite version!!! It is so funny.
exactly!! the superior version honestly.
Love this! My favorite adaptation! You edited it so well! Now I need you to make an edited video of Catherine and Tilney from Northanger Abbey!
that's a really good idea! i love that movie
@@KatesPat That's awesome to hear! Thanks for the awesome content 😁
Emma at any given point: “I wanted to…twist her mind.”
This is my favorite version of Emma. The costuming and hair are more realistic, plus Romola Garai. Chef's kiss!
mine too! and literally, romola garai made the whole thing so much better.

A portrayal that's no obnoxious, and unbookish. Nice. But the age gap will never not be weird.
Jonny Lee Miller is just a sweetheart ❤
I don't know how she managed to resist him so long
emma and mr. knightley being straight for 3 chaotic minutes
