It’s simple. The answer: You don’t just drive to work! Even for a super commuter like him with limited time, you still have chores and other things to do on your time off or after work that usually requires driving. It might not seem like it but those miles add up.
My dad used to work on the other side of the country here in the Netherlands. Roundtrip he also did 220 miles a day. His car used to run on natural gas because that’s way cheaper here in Holland, but that meant he had to fill up every day on his way home.
Once you factor in all his time and wear and tear commuting he is making no where near 3 times the amount he use to make ,time is money this just doesn't make any sense

My old coworkers use to commute 4 hrs a day from Fredericksburg to Northern VA, which was absurd. So I think it's stupid overall for the mere fact, in order to live in the Richmond area and keep his lifestyle, he doesn't need 3 times the pay - he probably really only needed 1.5 times more pay to see a boost in his lifestyle or for whatever his reasons for wanting more money is. That 3 times more pay is for people who live in the DMV because the cost of living is so high. So he effectively is trying to take that money back to RIC, but in the midst of that, he is killing himself slowly with this ridiculous commute. I havent done any research on this, but intuition tells me that there HAS TO be a way for him to organize a place to stay from Monday night to (including) Thursday night every week which is only about an hours commute away from his job. Even a hotel, just a basic one to sleep, wash, keep his clothes in good shape, should be feasible - surely you could strike a good deal when youre staying 4 nights a week, every week. What hes doing might be acceptable very temporarily, but in the long run that sort of commuting will (most of all) take a huge toll on his health and his family. My commute is 44 miles one way and take nearly that amount of time. It varies from 2 to 3 hours one way on average. While I don't transfer as many times as this guy. I feel his pain. It's kind of a bitter sweet feeling. To have the opportunity is amazing but the commute makes me regularly wonder if it's worth it at all.
My mother did this for 15 years. She was a social worker in the VA in DC. She left her job and transfer to SC got a year then opened a successful daycare business for 10 years, you do what you gotta do for family and income.

I lived in Richmond for a long time and there are quite a few people do that. My dad used to commute to Newport News from Williamsburg and then Richmond when we moved there. He did it for many years, 20 or so. All to be able to support his family the way he felt like he should, driving to a better paying employer. He listened to a lot of book on tape, before online stuff even. This was the 1980-2000.
It might seem crazy to most people; but when you love what you do, it isn't out of the way at all. My daily commute is similar to his, but not quite as long and I don't have to ride a train or car pool at all. My commute is around 170 miles one way, which takes a little over three hours to drive; so my daily commute is around 340 miles which takes about six and a half hours total.
I have to wonder if he's still doing this or has it finally taken it's toll. 7 hours is nearly a second full time job. A job that in itself does not pay a single cent.

It is, my GF's brother does this exact trip this guy takes, but even further from chesterfield to DC. He wakes up around 3AM and leaves to arrive at his job that's @7AM. He used to drive daily, but after months he started to realize he was putting insane mileage on his car, plus he was tired, he would literally get off at 4PM, get home at 7-8PM, and go to sleep an HR or two later, he owns a dodge charger so gas isn't cheap either, so he rented an apartment and comes home to his family on the weekends.
I'm doing 98mi each direction, 5 days/week, it isn't exactly 200 mi a day but lemme tell ya, sometimes your lifestyle trumps commute time. This isn't going to be sustainable for more than a year, but having a plan in-place may decrease that timeline even further.
This is outrageous, and nothing to celebrate. HE talks about family, but he doesn't even see his family during the week. Up at 4 - home by 9/10pm? JUST MOVE TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF DC or MD!!!!

That's 35 hours a week gone. GONE For just traveling....literally losing a day and half of your life each week. That's over 75 full days gone each year....actually since we're usually only awake for 16 hours each day, that really adds up to 110 "awake" days gone year....
It doesn't really add up to me how it takes 3 and 1/2 half hours to travel approximately 110 miles. Maybe 2 hours tops. And at $2.50 currently with gas prices that would only cost $7,200 a year in fuel costs. Then again I don't know how much he's being paid.

Joe Kent I commute 100 miles round trip , 90% of that is highway so without traffic it takes me about 45-50 min , I don’t love it though

He used to drive daily, but after months he started to realize he was putting insane mileage on his car, plus he was tired, he would literally get off at 4PM, get home at 7-8PM, and go to sleep an HR or two later, he owns a dodge charger so gas isn't cheap either, so he rented an apartment and comes home to his family on the weekends.
I'm doing 98mi each direction, 5 days/week, it isn't exactly 200 mi a day but lemme tell ya, sometimes your lifestyle trumps commute time. This isn't going to be sustainable for more than a year, but having a plan in-place may decrease that timeline even further.
Except that, at the time of this broadcast, he had been doing it every day for over a decade.

And I thought my 75mile drive was rough.
So he basically is working 2 full time jobs (8 hr at dc job plus 7 hr communte a day) but making 3x the salary?

This is outrageous, and nothing to celebrate. HE talks about family, but he doesn't even see his family during the week. Up at 4 - home by 9/10pm? JUST MOVE TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF DC or MD!!!!

Still if commuting takes 7 hours, that's basically your entire day accounted for assuming 8 hours at work and 8 hours sleeping and an hour for hygiene and dressing.
He's a PM for the Dept of Justice for 12 years - that's valuable connections he made. Any smart man would've sacrificed for 2 years and then parlay those connections to find a job closer to home.
How about the commute back after long day at work? Might want to think about moving to D.C and seeing family on weekends.
He should get a private pilots licence. He might actually save money.

Does he care about his health?
It would probably be more cost effective to:
1. Rent a studio outside DC to stay on weekdays and travel home on weekends.
2. Have the wife quit her job (since he's making 3 times his previous salary), sell the house and move a bit closer. He can't tell me he's commuting because of the neighbors and uncles and friends. That's not very bright.
3. If he can't move, he should not have taken the job. It's not worth his health since he's got no time to sleep or even see his family.
...what do I know? Maybe it's all worth it or he just doing it to have a 'good' story to tell on CBS

I have a 260 mile commute just to get to the shop I work at, and then I have to go to whatever job we have scheduled which can be another hour and a half or more
My uncle commuted (drove the entire way) 235 miles round trip a day for almost 20 years. He put 500,000 miles on a couple of trucks.
For the employer to even allow this is pretty messed up. They should have offered a place for his family to live closer. This is outrageous

That's 35 hours a week gone. GONE For just traveling....literally losing a day and half of your life each week. That's over 75 full days gone each year....actually since we're usually only awake for 16 hours each day, that really adds up to 110 "awake" days gone year....

if he doesn't want to move closer, just rent a room or extended stay motel. with gas/oil change/wear & tear and time saved it will pay for itself.
It doesn't really add up to me how it takes 3 and 1/2 half hours to travel approximately 110 miles. Maybe 2 hours tops. And at $2.50 currently with gas prices that would only cost $7,200 a year in fuel costs. Then again I don't know how much he's being paid.
