Few would argue that Master of Puppets is (at least one of) the best Metallica song. Master has genius musical moments and hidden things all over the track. And also three quite big mistakes in arrangement (in Cliff Burton's bass).

Unfortunately, I had to drop a half of the video: verse modulation, harmony, solos, bridges, outro. Maybe I'll finish those later. Or maybe not. We'll see. Now I'm in the post-video-release I-hate-everything phase ;-) Shout out to Ben Eller, The Art of Guitar, and Signals Music Studio for their analysis of Master, link in description
Hellllloooooo frriend
It's really nice of you to name Ben Eller and Jake from Signals Music. They are good analysts themselves. Thanks for the video Andriy.
The interlude is just perfect IMO. 😁
We want the second part plz
Keep up the great work
I hope that cliff was drunk during master of puppets recording
Cliff didn’t make mistakes, he made features.
He made happy little accidents
Tonal Harmony is wrong and Cliff knew it. But we are not ready for that type of truth.
@@lordviewer7305 It happens in other metal genres, and jazz, now and then.
it sounds better with the minor second imo, adds to the tension of the bridge
Are you an IT guy?
“We played it that way because it sounded metal AF”

Video is bomb though.
Eyyyy thanks for the mention, buddy!!!
Love you uncle Ben!!!
@@johnbraucher1499 I do tooooo!!!
Uncle Ben!!!
Ben Eller , ya gotta keep them arm hands moving quickly on M. O. P. . I learned how to play it the correct way from your video a couple of years ago!
You mean frrriend?
Rick Beato has a "What makes this song great" on MoP. It's great of course.
I totally forgot about it, definitely check it out friends
Master of Puppets doesn't have A main riff. It has THE main riffs.
Not unless there're several main riffs. I don't don't know who's THE great composer, but I do know there exist many great composers.
Bass is correct. All guitars wrong.
Both are correct.
Both are wrong.
There is no right or wrong in music. There's just sounds good and sounds bad. Master of Puppets sounds really really REALLY good.
Bass is always correct over guitar
ahdas mieliset paskat
No no no no. That last dissonance Is surely intentional. It adds a sinister feel that also helps transition to the next
Agree. Sinister feel is a good way to put it. Cliff was a student of classical music and definitely knew what James was playing.
I'm a classically trained composer, and use dissonance, including minor seconds, all the time. I too believe this was on purpose. This is like taking dissonant "jazz chords", or like weird "Meshuggah chords/leads", and claiming they must have been a mistake. We'll never know for sure, without Cliff - but I agree that Cliff knew what he was doing too well for it to be a mistake.
Highly unlikely. The band probably didn't notice it in the mix.
@@ImYourOverlord really?
@@builderbuilder616 That's my best guess. I'm very slightly tempted to believe Cliff intended for it to be that way, but it's difficult to fully accept.

I love this channel.
Best Metallica channel ever
I read this comment at the same time he said "juh juh juh"

Minor second interval *exists*
Music theory: you shouldnt use it
Korn: use it anyways
Music theory: *visible confusion*
Isn't the minor 2nd interval also the one I've come to know as "headache"?
As such: www.dropbox.com/s/wvqv98agi7s81a4/headache.wav?dl=0
Been listening that for years and years without knowing how it's done or what its called.

Metalcore n deathcore bands use it all the time too. Sounds litty

9:33 Best Dave Mustaine impression possibly maybe?
Your videos are becoming closer and closer to absolute perfection. You really deserve an interview with Metallica, I hope it happens at some point!
I would love to see that too. Definitely deserved it.
Even more so as this guy seems to know more about Metallica than Metallica themselves... :P
Hey Andriy. I still wait for All Nightmare Long vs Spit Out the Bone 🤟. Also, StateOfMercury says he’d like to collaborate with you again, so if you’re willing to make some more epic videos with him, we’d like to see them, frrrrrrrrrrrrrriend 🤟
Perhaps Cliff purposefully holds down the root note in the bass to transform James's ordinary power chord into a beastly flat sus minor 6th chord. --Dissonance belongs in every Thrash composition / arrangement!
Yeah, i would also say that, taking a tritone and adding a minor 2nd interval... maybe the ultimate dissonance haha
He was a student of classical music. I guess he knew exactly what James was playing and added some more tension to it here and there.
To be honest, I really like the minor second dissonance, I actually used quarter tone dissonance in a song before lol
Hearing Andriy say "Blyad" is worth watching the ad. More BLYAD please.
Love your content man 🔥🤘🏻
I appreciate it! 🤘
9:31 when I understood andry had fallen
G Titod now we’re in the eyes of the tornadOoO
I first learned this song after about 1 year of starting learning the drums, could be more or less. Honestly it's way more intuitive than people say with the signatures. It's 4/4 all the time with some extra half bars and some notes organized differently across the bar, except the "21/32" dun dun. I agree with Lars there, maybe my inexperience at the time actually helped
@Deconstruction 33 I think that's what he meant by half bars, it's largely 4/4 but with some measures of 2/4
i think it was a mistake at first its a missed 32nd note i think sounds great tho
This is awesome. Thanks Andriy :)
Man I really enjoyed that video. Thanks.
Your AD in the middle of the video made me happy...
Because it signifies your channel and persona are growing larger and reaching more people
I love the dissonant chunk in that section! It breaks it up a little bit and gives it character
That was a deep dive.
Thank you for your work.
Amazing analysis as usual man! I'm really gonna miss you here. You got me more interested on bass. With love from Argentina!
Dude! I really liked your delivery on this one. Nice job
Epic video as always. Your channel needs to grow FASTERRR. 🤘
I loved this!!! GREAT work! I also laughed out loud about your inch-check (and at a few other things too).
Gonna miss these videos ✌️ love your stuff
Master is my fav album and I whaited for video like this. Super work frrrrriend👊👊
I’ve been watching your channel for a while now, but I just haven’t realized how much I like the sound of your voice. I know this sounds weird but your accent is really cool. This is the first time I realized this lol.
You helped me learn music theory, thanks man.
Man, I love your enthusiasm, so positive! I would love to be in a band with you! Cheers!
Wow. Those mistakes. Never caught them. Great video.

I like how the videos are getting better and better over time.
Best video you've done! And I really liked the emphasis on humor. It's a fun one.
Wow I realy appreciate your work and skills. At the same time this film is really cool to watch. Thank you! 🤘
Dude, I have been following your videos and channel since forever and still enjoy the shit out of every one. Cant believe you will quit making these masterpieces in new year's
These are just perfect. Keep it up frrrrrriend!!!
Kirk said this about the main riff, and how James came up with it.
""HAMMETT I’ll tell you how the main [descending] riff to “Master of Puppets” came about. On the Ride the Lightning tour, James would always play the riff in the dressing room, but on the D string, and I’d play it simultaneously on the G string as a parallel-fourths harmony line. It sounded really dorky and funny. Then one day at rehearsal, James said, “Let me show you this really heavy song intro,” and proceeded to play that exact riff on the low E string. I said, “Ah, so you finally found a use for that dorky little thing!” It’s anything but dorky now."
"
Next serie you should analyze the official sheet music compare to the original songs. Specially for example this song and Fade to black with those major chords on the sheet music. And talk about how bands like Apocalyptica used those books to make their covers.
Oh man, covering all the wrong notes in those official tablature/notation books would take FOREVER! It's almost more wrong than right. And in those parts where the notation is right, the tab is often still wrong. Geez... What a trainwreck!
I love your videos man. Informative and entertaining
Love the vids
I really enjoyed this
great video
Great video, and good knowledge of music in general
For me, the main riff of Master Of Puppets is the verse riff. The riff that Andriy thinks is the main riff, to me, is more like a hook riff that ties the chorus and verses together.
Yeah, that's definitely not the main riff. The verse comes back so much more than the intro riff
i hope your post-video-release I-hate-everything phase abates soon, because this is a seriously insightful video on a great song. eagerly awaiting part 2 if you decide to make it!
The day that finally came!
11:20
Cliff: Uses minor seconds
Nu metal: Holy shit that's awesome man, let's try it
“You must not allow dissonance in your recordings”
Um... do you even listen to metal bro.?
He was being sarcastic there, because that's what a music theory snob would maybe say.
I think he was kinda joking
He said they should not be allowed in arrangements
Not just any dissonance, but there's a time and a place for everything.
Anyone else had trouble playing this song with all downstrokes at first?
Not really, just feels natural to me, playing the riff downpicked. Doesn't mean i can play the song amazingly good, but the downstrokes never bothered me.
The downstrokes never bothered me, I have a naturally fast right hand. It’s the left hand that bothers me. I can’t change chords that fast. But I’ll get there
@@D1ckGr4ys0n same
I can play it with all downstrokes it’s just that I can’t pick two strings for some reason
Yea i have. I can only do it with alternate picking. I cant downpick that fast lol=)
Just Perfect

YES HE MADE THE BEST VIDEO THAT HAS BEEN RELEASED ON THIS FRIDAY YAY
Edit: I meant Friday I thought it was Saturday.
Now you are a classic classic andriy
New day, new chance to ask for a Tornado Of Souls analysis before you retire from UA-cam (and my heart)
Its more intresting with those mistakes
I love it
I don't believe the interlude was a mistake. Creates sick metal dissonance! I always play it cliff's way despite knowing the guitar part. Great video!!
Great soung
Dude I love your channel, and you speak English very well. I been playing guitar for 20 yrs,and you point out shit I never noticed before? I love it bud!!
Respect, my frrrriend!
I can't stop replaying 10:14
0:31 It has been almost two years and I can't believe I only noticed this right now at 3 AM XD 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sup Andrew!
You've done amazing work figuring out peculiar stuff from Puppets, well done. But I can't help but mention that you've boosted your accent as well, now it's definitely honey to our ears to listen to you speaking. Not saying it was any bad back in the day at all, just want to say we're all here happy to see you growing as a person, musician and an active English speaker:)
Cheers!
I'm still in awe of the fact they were able to use the chromatic scale so brilliantly.
All I can do with it is the 4 note per string exercise...

You mean Holy Wars is the Master of Puppets of Megadeth
Indeed. I know time is an illusion but still... XD
Holy wars is a better song
@@H.E.M. Ehhhhhhhhhh
@@H.E.M. Even if it is a better song Master of Puppets came out first
Ofcourse MOP is better
Fun fact about the origin for the main riff in Master Of Puppets, according to Kirk in the book ”Back To The Front”.
Kirk Hammett:
We were drinking at the Carlson house one night, and Lars turned on the tape deck:
”Listen to this, man! Fostex Multitrack Mesa/Boogies with James playing the heaviest riff ever!”
It was the main riff to ”Master Of Puppets”, which had been quadrupled on all four tracks and sounded super heavy. And I knew it immediately as this joke riff that James would always play on the D-string. He just dropped it down to the low E-string and it was suddenly this whole other thing.
My favorite song 🤘🤘
In my opinion C sounds much better in that post-interlude riff
Just realised I was wrong, I play C all the time too. Cliffs right, James was wrong!!
I believe he did it on purpose to increase the tension.
No
haha that was an incredible video, 1,000 years from now we hearing news discovers about master of puppets
Sweet home Metallabama
Great video! Also, is your notification sound the bass censorship? I’m curious.
2:38 CONGRATULATIONS !!!
To state the obvious, it is possible to use dissonance deliberately. In the heavy ending of the interlude it actually makes sense to use dissonance (in my opinion) if you understand the song as a whole. Most of the lyrics are written from the perspective of the master/drug; but during the interlude the lyrics are written from the perspective of the one using the drug. In my opinion the violence of the faster portions of the song suggests a constant struggle between the master/drug and the user, who crashes just before the interlude. It seems to me that the user then starts to get a grip of himself; he vocalizes his realization that the drug isn't giving him what he wants in life, and that he has become a slave to the master. However, the solo represents the user finally giving into his desire for the drug and the high that follows; but the high is fleeting and the old violent struggle between the drug and user resumes. The dissonance during the heavy ending of the interlude makes sense because tension is growing as the user expresses anger and frustration, but nevertheless slowly gives in to temptation. I don't think it's any accident that in the S&M and S&M2 versions (as far as I can tell) the orchestral strings produce a considerable amount of dissonance during the heavy ending of the interlude. I'm not saying that Cliff definitely used dissonance deliberately in every instance; but in some places it makes sense, and he knew enough about music theory that I would think he would have realized what he was doing.
" the solo represents the user finally giving into his desire for the drug and the high that follows" - Indeed, as James cries: "Fix me!"
Imagine writing that whole thing just to be wrong 😅
@@joelee6565
I must be wrong, because you said so, and also because your argument is irrefutable. I once thought that dissonance had been deliberately used in metal since the early days of Black Sabbath; but apparently this is incorrect. Dissonance has no place in metal; therefore, Cliff Burton must have made a mistake. Musical geniuses like you have conclusively exposed Cliff's wrongness, so that everyone who formerly thought that Cliff was a competent bassist and musician must cower before your withering intellect and admit that they had been wrong.
@@ryangardner8125 it's still too much to read 😂 the video says ur wrong

Your response confirms what I had suspected.
Hey Andriy!First of all, love your channel, always bringing great content about Metallica and other Thrash bands.I know we're still in the Metallica month, however, could I ask you to break down the song Floods from Pantera?I think it is a legendary track by them, and even though it has Dimebag's greatest solo,I still think it is kinda underrated. There would be a lot to talk about this track.Could you consider it?
Cheers from Brazil,frrriend!🇧🇷
Now, I'm never not gonna hear this shit! Thanks bro
