When it comes to pick the best Metallica album, it often comes down to just Master of Puppets vs The Black Album. But in my opinion, it's Ride the Lightning. And I'll explain why in today's 13th episode of MetalliGeek - our Metallica podcast.

I love how Dave always says “my previous band” rather than just saying Metallica
Well he was given the boot in a pretty shitty way. I can understand why he would make them his Voldemort.
@@Robocline He deserved it though, he was being a shitty person
@@Top10Dylan What? No warning? No second chance?
And I still think it was better he was kicked out. Instead of onr kickass band we got two 😁
I am still discovering Megadeth, but fuck me, I am loving it so far

Ride The Lightning is the best Metallica album, because it's the 69th most sold album in the world.

Trapped under ice is one of the most underated songs of metallica
Agree
Thrasher as fuck
Yass
James have problem singing that song. And that song is fast af. Double bass almost the rest of the song
Trapped under ice : Dyer's eve embryo.
"We learned that the bass is too loud." - James and Lars
My condolences to all bass players out there
damn, you cought the line
As a bass player, this hurts :(
Newsted can feel it.
@@search895 oh, he can
Damn it, I'm not a fan of James and Lars from now on.
James would probably slap you for saying that the breakdown in escape is almost as good as the one in creeping death.
#escapeaintsuck
He did say almost
Kirk wrote the Creeping Death breakdown.
He wrote that part with Exodus
It's odd that James is so funny about it when The Thing That Should Not Be is long and boring. And just take your pick of all the turds after TBA.
James criticized the use of reverb on RTL but to me that's one of the coolest and most unique aspects of the album, it makes everything sound like a dream or a nightmare, even a burning memory that will haunt to you to eternity. You can say that professionally it's too much but that's really how I like the sound to be

Ride the Lightning is the perfect album because it has every element of Metallica that people love. Want Fast “classic” thrash? - Fight Fire With Fire. Want more progressive thrash? - Creeping Death. Want a real head banger? - For Whom the Bell Tolls. It’s got the ballad, it’s got the instrumental, it’s got it all.
@Bhaskar Yadav
Don't put too much thought into it dude still making a good point.
True story
kodadano and so does MOP
I think Master is slightly better because it’s more cohesive has much better production and does the things you mentioned better than Ride the Lightning.
MoP is very similar. Fight fire with fire and battery are very similar, fade to black and sanitarium are very similar. Call of Ktulu and Orion are similar as in they are both long musical performances. Master of puppets and creeping death are also similar
I could always imagine Dave doing vocals on the title track of Ride the Lightning. "Guilty as charged, but dammit, it ain't right" would work so well with snarly Mustaine vocals.

Andiry:“ ride the lightning, hardwired, and justice are my favorite albums for bass”
Me: did he just say justice?
He meant the tone and bass lines. Listen to isolated bass tracks from Justice, they're amazing.
dk2853 bro if im being honest idk how jason goes that fast in AJFA
Sweater Eater25 he uses a pick
Justice for all was a good album don't care what anybody says.
dk2853 where do one get isolated bass tracks from any Band? You don’t mean Midi crap like From Guitar Tab Pro , do you?
Ride the lightning was such an amazing album beacause it never really made me bored of it.
It has a lot of variety, like going from a classic thrashy song such as *Fight Fire with Fire* to a more melodic *For whom the Bell Tolls* , to a ballad like *Fade to Black* and ending with an instrumental *The Call of Ktulu*
Yeah. Half of Metallica albums have such a variety. But the charm of Ride is that they did it for the first time
It's a dark atmospheric album with the right track lengths and arrangements. The next 2 copy the track arrangements and are never as good.
Meanwhile you picture is master of puppets
@@cheeseisjar3058 never said rtl was my favorite \_(-_-)_/
My opinion: *blasts For whom the bell tolls on 3 devices at a time*
I my opinion, RTL has the best thrash tone of all Metallica albums, tight and agressive, also is the best album for me.
If only they came back to oldschool in new album, that would be cool.
Yeah very crunchy, but still high gain
Too much reverb, without that error the tone would be almost Reign In Blood-ish and a lot heavier.
Nope they didnt
@@dagreetpapirusmusic9163Death magnetic İs one of the best works of New Metallica.Old school trash riffs Tempos.Only problem is the production.
I actually like Trapped under Ice, it's very underrated song, just my opinion
I like the "CRY OUT!!!" screams in that song.
No you are right it is a over looked song.
Criminally underrated
How does one not? ;) It's a killer tune!
The solos are badass
“Trapped under Ice”was one of my favorites as a kid. I grew up listening to “ride the lightning” album on my discman while Ice fishing.
Ride the lightning was the first album I heard by Tallica!
Me too
Mine would be Kill em' All, but the first one I owned myself and listened to by myself was Master of Puppets.
Yeeeeeaaaah RTL my fav album on the world
Edit: so those are my arguments:
- 5 composers: Hetfield, Ulrich, Burton, Hammett, Mustaine
- Call Of Ktulu - one of the most complex clean riffs of all time (and my fav one), and insane bass track
- title track - the definition of metal IMO
- Creeping Death - the coolest song to play live (Die! Die! Die!)
- For Whom The Bell Tolls - amazing intro with cool sections, built-up before the drop
- Fade To Black - besides being great composition with awesome riffs, solos and lyrics, it's one the most soulfull songs on the world
- Trapped Under Ice - one of my fav vocal tracks of James, also a great riff in the middle of the song
I could think of more but I'm too lazy to do it 😂
Escape - badass outro with air raid sirens. Pairs well with literature about oppressive regimes.
Arguments don't make personal preference any more valid
Thanks, you summed it up pretty well!
@@jeccf5072 I gave you reasons why it's MY fav album, not the best album ever
@Rotten to the Core! I didn't know that
Metallica fans: *arguing whether MOP or RTL is the best album of Metallica*
Me: you know... St. Anger is actually pretty good...
I love you for that. Finally someone who understands the beauty of St Anger
St. Anger is far from being last on my favourite metallica albums list. It just has its own charm and space in all of it. I think I have listened more to st. Anger than the Black Album to be honest
"St Anger: better than you think" is in progress
@@Taylor-ou7xp But the problem is that there has to be an album that in comparison to the other albums is underwhelming to you. I lately listen to the song St Anger itself a lot just for the fricking breakdown after every chorus (if you watch the video: I mean the part where they stomp their foot on the ground) it's so fricking heavy
@The retard rocket but... Fuel is my favorite song... :(
I died when Dave Mustaine said ,,previous band" XDDD
It sounds to me as husband is talking about his ex-wife after long painfull divorce.
@@kamilfingr371 well it was a very short divorce
My points:
1. Creeping Death is kickass and one of Metallica's best songs
2. 5 composers
3. Most of the tracks are awesome in a live setting
4. Fade to black: An amazing first ballad
No
"It's the 69th best selling album of all time" no, not by a long shot.
@@Ytrearneindre Okay, will edit comment
RTL was my favorite album growing up, still has a special place in my heart. Fade to Black is the one song that got me into Metallica, good stuff.
I love Escape, always have. It has a “breaking out of prison” feel to it, and great harmonies.
Last album where James had his really good pubescent scream/yell things.
Bro, not only was the musical composition, and musicianship great on RTL, but for me personally, the lyrics are very meaningful and very mature for guys that were in their early 20s, almost too mature. RTL was instrumental and lyrical perfection, this album an epic masterpiece.
I agree 100% that Ride the Lighting is probably their best and it is my favorite
Ride the Lightning is my favorite Metallica album. I have first listen to this gem around 1986, and remains my favorite to this day! Excellent analysis Andriy. as always.
Thank you!
My points
Creeping death bridge
Bass in For whom the bell tolls
Everyone who wrote it
James voice
Every song was great
Escape is a great song, that’s it, that’s my comment keep walking.
PD: Right The Lightening is their best album
Infamous Wolf I totally agree
RTL was more thrash than MOP
MOP is closer to arena rock but it’s obviously amazing for its own reasons
2:51 I just made a short yet great cameo lol
;-)
i went to boot camp in Chicago in the winter... while my company was marching to the cadence, I was singing trapped under ice in my head:)
IMHO My top Of Five best Metallica albums are
1. Ride The Lighting (The reasons Of the video)
2. ...And Justice For All (Yeah, no bass, but The harmonies, The solos, The Drums And riffs un general are just Epic)
3. Master Of Puppets (Similar to Ride The Lighting but with less Cliff's influence)
4. Load (great production And lyrics And so Many new instruments. I just love It)
5. The Black Album (An awesome singing from James)
Somebody Will Kill me 'cause I didn't put Kill 'Em All
Rotten to the Core!
Load is badass. You’re not.
@Rotten to the Core! Do opinions trigger you or something? Because according to your comments it seems like you have the inability to resist being a dick to anyone who likes Load or anything you don't.
Man, you really love Metallica, the amount of time you spend on this band is quite remarkable
I always considered RTL their "heavy metal" album: reverb, twin solos and classic heavy tunes like Fade to Black or For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Master feels more like a "extreme metal" album, mostly in the sound/production department.
I just wrote a comment stating these same things ahah. Well captured, my friend.
Sometimes I forget how ride lightning songs are amazing when you get used to listen the same songs from that album instead the rest. Whenever you blasting it from 1 to last song it gets even much mind blowing
My humble opinion about every Metallica album:
•Kill ‘Em All: Every song is amazing, bass tone is a bit weak, yet loud
•Ride The Lightning: Almost flawless album, bass tone thicc af
•Master Of Puppets: angry sound, still edible for newer fans, ROUGH bass tone
•And Justice For All: The most aggresive over ever, cool bass lines even tho we can't hear them
•Black Album: Heavy sound, but in average boring, THICC bass
•Load/Reload: Crunchy and Heavy sound, it's ok if you understand the context of that era, the purest bass lines, but buried in the mix
•St. Anger: Angry and Heavy sound, but still boring, underrated bass lines
•Death Magnetic: Sounds as It was recorded in a trashcan (needs remastering), yet cool, AWESOME bass lines, but also buried in the mix
•HTSD: an overall homage to their roots, perfect tone, bass audible, yet too technical
Like so Andriy can read it :)
Greetings from México frrrrriend :)
It's cool that you made a metion Of the bass in every album. Cliff, Jason, Bob And Rob would we proud Of this
@Rotten to the Core! and you're being obnoxious
The bass definitely wasn't buried in the mix on Load and Reload, get some new headphones
Basslines in st anger are horrible!
@@bt3743 Most of us seem to agree on that. He makes multiple accounts, and smears the band with 'facts'.
Like 'No Remorse's ending riff is a 'rehash' of Metal Militia's main riff. Uh, no. Aside from being quick and in A, those are the only similarities.
He's one of those Mustaine fanboys who acts like the other guys played no part in writing the music. When it's clear all of them played a role, INCLUDING Dave.
9:40 And Justice For All has one of your favorite metallica bass tones
XD
The way it's mixed, the guitar tone. It fits so damn well with the music, and with the stuff James sings about. It's perfect.
Another great análisis video thanks Andriy
I will say it again
RTL is my favorite album musically
And lyrically is St.Anger
... he will never get respect ...
🤔
Out of all the lyrically great albums that Metallica has (even ones that aren’t musically great like load and reload), and you choose St Anger? C’mon man
Honestly, Trapped Under Ice is my favorite song by Metallica. I really wish they played it live more.
It's my 18th birthday and you made my day uploading this. Stay metal🤘🏻
Fun fact: Escape is the song in which James hits his record LOWest vocal note in Metallica's discography.
(at least, as far as I'm aware)
I'm still partial to Puppets being their best album, even though my favorite SONGS are Frayed Ends Of Sanity, Dyers Eve, and Fight Fire With Fire.
I like all of the albums, even Load and Reload. Everytime they bring something new, something fresh. The albums aren't the same, although the first 3 albums are more equal.
If I have to choose between RtL and MoP, it will be RtL, just because I can play more songs on my guitar 😄
fastest thing made that made SENSE your a genieus bro ,awesome vids !!!!!
Great work!
I've always considered Ride the Lightning my favorite album ever in the whole Metal genre and now that I'm reaching 40 it's still no1 for me. It's metal, it's fast, it's heavy, is dark, it's sad, it's epic, all these presented visualy by a perfect cover. In terms of personallity, composisions and "maturity" it's a really huge step forward compared to the perfect "immaturity" of bonecrushing "Kill 'em All' album.
7:07 Pepsi logo?
Well, Metallica never did coke
@@AndriyVasylenko Most underrated comment 😂😂😂
Very good points....i love this perspective.
I didn't even know that you played bass
Now I'm glad I subbed!
Rtl is the definitive Metallica album,as it had the right mix of rawness and polished sound.
This album has the proper Metallica sound 😎🤘
8:21 F'oath. I got to see them play Trapped Under Ice live at my first ever live show back in 2010, at their last show of the World Magnetic tour and still the last time they played it live apart from the whole RtL playthrough thing in 2012. They should bring it back, it's a banger. It certainly went right off in Melbourne.
Also, I'd love a video about the technical elements in both it and Escape.
2:58 I love the way you used Rudy Ayoub's face
I love the intro from ride the lightning. It’s heavy, aggressive and super fun to hear
My favorite is AJFA, and always will be.
1: IMHO, To Live Is To Die is as good as Orion and Ktulu, and I always cry when I listen to that shit. (I always thought that it and Dyers Eve are a two parts song, what is like a bonus).
2: If you want to consider the worst songs, Shortest Straw is as good as Escape or Leper Messiah, IMHO, what is great as hell.
3: There are a lot of badass 10/10 songs like One, the title track and Frayed Ends, and I really love progressive stuff (it's my opinion, not yours).
Absolutely agree with each of your points. To Live Is To Die may not be a Burton masterpiece like its predecessors, but it is sublime and deeply moving. And Justice for All is the one Metallica album I most enjoy listening to from start to finish, for all that people whinge about the songs being overly long, the flow from song to song, the aggression and angst and grief over Cliff make it a dramatic and musical masterpiece. The triumphant youths coming out with the brutal, bold and masterful statement that was Ride the Lightning, on top of the world and of their game with Master, emerge after Cliff's death wounded, pouring their fury and their brilliance into this one, furious, fearless battle cry of an album. I seldom associate colors or images with particular sounds, but listening to AJFA I always feel wrapped in a beautiful, somber black shroud. It also evokes images of steel against a pitch black backdrop.
All that said, Creeping Death is a perfect song, and others on RTL also command my love and respect. AJFA remains, for me, the quintessential album, start to finish, compared to which the other two great Metallica albums of the eighties strike me as excellent collections of mostly brilliant songs. Unlike MOP and RTL, each of which contain songs I sometimes skip (Escape, Trapped Under Ice, The Thing That Should Not Be), And Justice For All doesn't have a weak song on it.
Frayed Ends is also flawless, as is One.
Blackened is a good opener to the album.
@@milktoast16 Blackened is THE OPENER
leper messiah is one of the best on master of puppets wtf are you talking about? Shortest straw is also great
My second favorite album, I absolutely love Creeping Death and Call of Ktulu, still love Master of Puppets the most!!!
The chorus of "Escape" sound so good!
In "Ride The Lightning" Kirk solo is a masterpiece, and the whole album is great to listen/play to, no matter what your level of skills are (Fade To Black intro is one of the first things i learned in guitar), yet with all the energy that the early Tallica (And the other guy) had, truly a masterpiece that is brutally underrated.
Cheers from Argentina! Frrriend
Kirk used some satriani lessons and tips on ride the lightning solo specially, that octave melody is all satriani influence.
Andriy: "Ride The Lightning is the best Metallica album."
AJFA: "Hold my riffs..."
AJFA could havebeen the best but for stretching songs out for the sake of having long songs, and if the production was better. Lars should be only playing drums in 2 takes; it's not technical death metal drumming for gods sake.
Honestly Ride The Lightning had always been my favorite Metallica album but a few years back it switched to And Justice For All but I have to disagree that Lightning is a superior album to Master Of Puppets....M.O.P. has it ALL for me each track is great they're all hard hitting tracks it's Cliff's last album he played on I mean come on you get Sanitarium (Welcome Home), Disposable Heroes, Leper Messiah to Orion to Damage Inc. I mean just that ALONE is a stellar line up of songs all in a row I mean the entire album you could literally play all the way through without skipping a track now I can't say the same thing for "Ride The Lightning" I would usually always skip over "Trapped Under Ice" (Which I recently grew to appreciate much more now) and "Escape" which I still to this day skip on my c.d. Everytime I play that album in my car it's still an amazing album but I don't think it's as good as Master Of Puppets
In my opinion, Black Sabbath, Ride The Lighting, Rust in Peace and Vulgar display of power are the ULTIMATE metal albums
Thanks, man. Now I have to listen to freakin Ride!
This just hardened my theory that Ride is to superior ‘tallica album
On the early album James’s vocals sounds like a young kid. As he aged, in my opinion, they lost a little something. The more recent albums sound like a dad not a young rebel.
That would make sense because he is a dad and not a young “rebel” anymore
Excellent video about excellent album! I think you should do a similar video on Justice, too🤘
4:16 you can already tell that's a Dave Mustaine riff because it's the same as the intro riff to Hangar 18
RTL has always been my favorite, followed by Justice/Master tie and Kill 'em All/Black Album tie (Metallica is too good to rank their albums anyway).
Completely agreed on the bass tone differences between the albums. On Kill it sounded quite scooped and trebly (thanks to Cliff' s modified Rick), while on Master it was a bit too muddy. The overdrive sounded great on RTL.
@Rotten to the Core! "objectively" Well, no...
@Rotten And TBA rectifies the problems on Justice but you will still shit on it.
@@Leo-qw9gh He hates Metallica. He constantly smears them. He frequently makes up ridiculous claims about them.
@kartik You've lost me completely now and the only people who hate Metallica are Metallica fans; and it's understandable.
@@Leo-qw9gh Hi Rotten to the Core!
Ride the Lightning is my second favorite Metallica album. I think Master of Puppets will always hold the top spot for me. I think it's just incrementally better than RTL in almost every way. Yes, it completely apes its predecessor's formula, but song for song, it is just a bit better. Plus James's voice never sounded more menacing than on MOP.
And Justice For All has a more Badass James voice

All very interesting. But.... as a lead guitarist (me) I have to say Kirk should be getting more credit. He wrote a lot of killer solos for songs he gets no credit for.
You're right. For years, I thought the Ride the Lightning and Call of Ktulu's solos were actually written by Mustaine.
I like RTL yet I skip nearly every song when it plays in my playlist

Cliff did a lot of harmonic arrangements on MoP but he wasn't credited with any of them. He was the main arranger of harmony on most of their tracks.

Thank you for making a video about my favourite Metallica album!
Edit: I just started watching the video, and seeing James' fav album is RtL and the fact that you think it is the best album, made me even happier!
Ride The Lightning has amazing sound quality... except for the drums. The bass drum cannot even be heard. Its sad cause lars used much double bass drumming during this album
You can on fight fire with fire
Ride the Lightning is one of the greatest heavy metal albums and Master of Puppets is one of the most overrated metal albums.

RTL is completely what I aspire to do with my band... if I had one!
Well fucking said. Lightning is musically my favorite and artistically my favorite album cover.
Totally agree! Ride The lighting and AJFA are both my favourites! The bass on RTL is just sick
I think that i always loved that album because of the reverb. It creates soundscape like they were playing up there in storm clouds
I can't understand how can you not like RTL's tone, it's perfect, I've seen it named cold and it blew my mind, because it's a perfect word to describe this frosty, chilling, sharp sound/
My favorite Metallica album tone and aesthetic wise!
