The insight to the molding process was really interesting. Would love to see the process of making an overmolded disc at the factory. The engineering facinates me
I've worked in plastic extrusion since 1988. I still laugh when my operators wonder why the process is different today than 2 weeks ago when we ran the same part... 😂 So many variables in extrusion, and I'm assuming injection molding is close to the same... SOME DAY, I am going to see the process of making a disc!!!
That was the funniest opening ever. Laughed so hard at the end. I pre-ordered one already for my nephew and thought I wouldn't be able to handle one because I have slow arm speed bit may try out the different colors and see if it will work for me. Great insight.
Injection molder here. It takes a massive amount of investment to make sure most variables are dealt with. Resin dryers, master batch (colorant) density to be used with the base resin, proper mixing before barrel loading, rehology testing before processing. The mold building is critical, good temperature controls, shrink factored in, proper gating (ideally valve gates). Not to mention good process controls with quality testing for consistent running IE 30 piece run measured to a capability study on a measurement device (CMM or blue light). Time consuming and expensive to truly nail a process.
Love that you laid out the color differences. I have a slower arm speed and had no intention of getting the time lapse cause it’s just too much for my arm but I may have to get a purple one now.
I have first hand experience with what Simon is talking about. I work in a 3rd party test facility, and one of the test's we perform is a meltflow test. This is done on an extrusion plastometer, and so many things go into it to get consistent specimens. The weight, the heat, how clean the barrel is, how clean the die is, how pristine the barrel and die are, even how the plastic pellets are loaded can cause bubbles in the flow rate. There is always an allowable tolerance, when you have so many things that can go wrong there will always be inconsistencies that are unavoidable.
Might be the best intro ever. Also, appreciate the explanation. I knew my bag was full of MVP for a reason. It’s because you explain the molds…and now the plastic and colors. Thank you!
i like the feel of the time lapse though the pink one and the blue one i bought are quite a bit more over stable than my proto time lapse which was about as beefy as my horizon cloud breaker lol. i wish i could get my arm speed up about 10 to 15 mph then i could use it for something more than a heavy wind disc right now haha. hopefully by spring i can get up there. thank you for all the inspiration and drive to strive to be better! I will catch up eventually ;). failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough!

funny how the colors follow ROY G BIV for stability just like LED voltage drop for different color and wavelength.... Try some Teslas in different colors then think about what the man, N Tesla, said about frequency and vibration. Maybe a little "mindbender", but red is a rooted heavier frequency while blue and violet are a higher and lighter frequency...MINDBENDING. BTW, love my purple mind bender! Simon, although I mostly agree with you on the colors/runs affecting stability. How about some Simon Science? Take 10 of each color you've notice fly different of the time lapse and put them against each other. 10 purple (understable), 10 grey (neutral) 10 pink (overstable), we all know you can throw shots back to back with the same angle/arm speed you've proven this on camera (maybe bring a speed gun). Perhaps MVP can turn it into a give away event for Simon Thrown discs 😉 sign them "Simon Verified {disc stability}".
a 1 degree difference in movement upon cooling is going to be trivial for a 1 inch block, but massive for an 8-inch disc. Additionally, the blocks can be elastically deformed during assembly and match up to the "perfect" size. A disc flying through the air isn't going have the same forces pushing it back to the "correct" shape.
Well one of their "secrets" is they premix the different colors with a whole separate process to insure consistency across many injection molding machines and runs. This process isn't really feasible for the relatively small batches that discs are made in, especially with the large variety of colors desired. Another factor is disc design, for consistent shape with relatively even shrinkage of plastic a consistent and relatively thin wall thickness is better. Disc golf discs, especially high speed drivers, have huge wall thickness differences between the flight plate and the wing. It's possible to get things more consistent than they are now, but there will never be two discs exactly the same.
I appreciate you telling us the different flights of the Time Lapse. I always see people talking about the different flights of Heimburg Destroyers by color/year and it's nice to skip the debate when deciding which one to get.
I love that German traffic sign you posted on the tee!. You should use it as a graphic design for our discs. Not for sale, just a custom stamp for only you.
