Last Days on the Catamaran & What We Thought (MJ Sailing - EP 100)

  • Now that we have spent a few weeks sailing and living on a catamaran, what do we think of it vs our monohull?
    We can't believe our time on the Island Spirit 380 is coming to an end, so we try to enjoy our last few days in Koh Chang to the fullest. With long lounging breakfast in the open air cockpit, we get ready to start our day on shore.
    Renting a scooter so we can cover more ground, we drive up to the Klong Plu Waterfall. It's much taller than the one we saw in Koh Kut, but big boulders and deep pools keep you from taking a nice swim underneath it.
    With our set of wheels we also take in a beautiful sunset at White Sand Beach, before walking down the strip of road there for dinner once the sun goes down. Famous for its street food, there are dozens of stalls set up that will offer you almost any kind of Thai food you can think of....and all incredibly cheap!
    Then, it's time to return the catamaran to the base. Having spent two weeks aboard a multihull boat, we give a little insight to our thoughts on cruising a catamaran...and if one will ever be in our future.
    Much love from Thailand,
    Jessica, Matt & Georgie

    makes sense. you are doing this to see the world and the view is much better from the deck of a cat. it would be interesting to see a video
    of your logic in picking out a project boat ( storm damaged?) and where you might choose to set up shop to do the work.
    have a fun week!

      Probably not looking for storm damaged boat. I'm more interested in something that just needs a good spit polish and interior redo.
      We were interested in this boat, but the broker never wrote back to me... good thing, since we aren't ready yet :) www.yachtbroker-charters.com/multihulls/A1352S-Jeffcat-44.html

    I just went back to mono after six (6) years living and cruising on a catamaran..I loved the catamaran......Fair comparison that you guys gave...I could right a chapter on differences but....It comes down to 2 things.....Livability (cat) vs Sailing (mono) ..Yes there are a few expensive exceptions... A few things with your comparison is the newer boats are pretty open and airy down below, wider beams and sleeping in your salon is boat specific...Also I enjoy the physical cockpit at anchor more in a mono as you are up higher looking over the deck (360), cozier sitting with guests, better airflow, etc.......Cats win on my scale 7 out of 10 times in Livability.....Monos win 7 out of 10 times for sailing characteristic.......It all depends on what type of cruising and how you will use the boat. You hit the nail on the head that (I know you want your hull in Northern Climates), but heating a catamaran in cold weather sucks.....

    My back of the napkin calculation is that a 42 foot catamaran is most comparable to a 70 foot monohull. A catamaran is two monohulls and a party barge in one. A big ketch with a center cockpit will put you on top of the boat, a 360 view and can be enclosed.

      Luckily, we only draw 3' with Elements and can sit flat on its bottom, so not that much of a gain for us with most catamarans. The 18" of a Gemini beats it, but that's a rarity and not the norm in larger cats.

    Nice video - My wife pointed out that you failed to mention her number one reason why she likes a cat better and she kinda got mad LOL that you didn't point how much nicer it is walking and doing things hen on a catamaran when your destination is 100 miles in to the wind thus the need to tack all day long and saying she would often be cooking nice meals on the cat when under the same conditions on our old monohull she wouldn't even consider attempting to make that same meal! I agree with her, and any comparison between monohull and catamarans would be neglect not to mention this very big and important difference!. THANKS

  • @johnwang9914
    @johnwang9914 5 років тому

    Catamarans put a lot more stress on the sails, stays and masts simply because they don't heal to spill the wind. They are more stable till they are not, they actually capsize easier and there is an additional mode for capsizing with swells as the catamaran will try to stay level with the slopes of the waves and swells so when they are broached by waves and swells they can capsize just from that while a monohull will maintain it's heal despite the waves and swells. I think people become fooled by the catamarans seeming stability and push the boats further than they should. Of course, so long as you are aware that the stability I'd misleading and reef earlier, climb up the mast to inspect the stays more often and generally step up your maintenance then a catamaran does have the advantages of comfort and space. Note, many marinas charge two slips for a catamaran.

    Catamaran, monohull what’s your favourite? Well when I rode motorcycles when asked what my favourite bike is my answer was always “The one I am riding at the time”. I’ve never sailed a cat but my sense is my answer to the cat/mono question would be the same. Face it, for those of us fortunate enough to live and cruise on a sailboat this is a pretty good gig regardless of how many hulls are underneath us.

    Jess put out a video when you were working on Element that was titled "A Tour of the Boat Graveyard" (Episode 39) that had a blue Catalac cat pictured in her tour of the boat yard. Catalacs are an older boat but there's something about them that appeals to me. They're supposed to be a great live aboard, you can beach them if necessary and they're supposed to be a great sea boat. The down side is they're not as fast as the newer cats.
    Anyway, keep the great videos coming. You two have a GREAT channel.

      The motion in a seaway with a catamaran gets much more pleasant if you go above 40 feet. I guess thats the reason why cats between 40 and 45 feet are so popular- still managable sailarea and relatively affordable pricerange, for a cat that is.

    So far I have not heard one person that want to go back to a monohull after sailing catamaran. 😊
    By the way, what they also say is that you have to go up to at least a 45' or bigger catamaran before you will really feel how stable they actually are.
    Smaller catamarans, like for example the one you sailed in here, will still be affected by the waves much more. 😉

    It's interesting the difference in your eating habits when making a passage, to when you're going in dinner on shore.
    I must have missed it, is Elements hull insulated? Do you have heat?
    Cat v Mono: In bad weather a Mono can be made to self tend, if a short handed crew need to rest. On a Cat, they have to work the boat to keep it safe. If you get the weather right, Cats are great. Get it wrong and they're a lot of work.
    Keep up the good work.

  • @friarfox
    @friarfox 5 років тому

    Apples to apples so to speak. You can't compare a new cat to a 50 year old monohull and here is the main reason. The new Oysters or Hunters etc all come in "cheese wedge" now giving you a much wider boat usually for an aft cabin or 2, while the main salon is taking on the look of the Motel6 cat but without switching. The costs are insane and closer to a Leopard or Outremer but not quite. The life aboard I'm sure is much more convenient and unless you are a die hard racer, either choice would probably be fine. Affordability and sustainability are key for most people. I still dream of a Hans Christian 33 if only my wife would go along with it. Happy trails

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 років тому +2

      The stability of pulling the beam aft sure helps too, but you still have the separation of the cockpit and limited visibility (even with the hull deadlights) that make a cat more desirable for us if we're just hanging in the Med or Caribbean.

      If the near future is about 2-3 years away. 😉 I can't believe we didn't end up with any footage of the bike either! When I went back through all our clips, all I could find was a quick pan of it on the phone when we were first picking it up. I think it went up on our Instagram stories.

    Check out 'wooden' Wharram Catamarans, like the one sailed by Stu & Ziya of LUCKYFISH (YT) and built by Andy Smith in the Philippines. A TIKI 38-ft takes about 9-months to build for about $180,000 USD. Scuba Tony, in Cancun, bought one. For your snoring, check out SNORBEN (Australian-made) nasal insert, available at P&F Pharmacies, here in Bangkok...

      I was concerned with this too, but luckily (and surprisingly) we had no real bug issues at all in Thailand. You'd get the sand fleas at dusk if on the beach, but if on the boat, nothing. I think we were there during their dry season.

    You are comparing your small monohull with a big catamaran. For the price of a catamaran you can get a quite big deck salon monohull that will give you those 360 views.

    I really enjoy your videos. The fish are nibbling at your feet to eat your dead skin. People pay money to have this done. It is an Asian thing I believe.

      When we were in Siem Reap Cambodia they had tanks everywhere with the fish that nibbled the dead skin off your feet. I sat in one for about 15 min and the fish were going CRAZY over my feet, haha. I think I have a video of it on our Instagram account.

    It's not really fair to compare the 2 boat types, there is always price and size. Like a 1500sf house vs 4000sf. It would be better to compare a 50' monohull ( with a large pilot house for matt) vs a 35 Cat.

    The Cat Mono debut is interesting - the key change is weather routing that enables Cats to keep out of trouble. I am from New Zealand so I know what a storm looks like ua-cam.com/video/aUWascqCBe0/v-deo.html so I would never take a Cat south of Stewart Island. However near the equator a Cat is the only boat to have. Horses for courses :-)

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 років тому

      I agree about the multihull ruling the equator. Once we decide to stay at those lats, I think it will be the best choice for us.

    You should try a GoFundMe for a new boat. I think you would get a lot of financial support from your fans, and vicarious cruisers, for the acquisition of a catamaran. Another channel I watch did a fund raising event for a large RV and had the entire purchase fully funded within 1 month! Love the videos; keep 'em coming.
