My father, who was drafted into the Army late in Vietnam, had the best 1st Sergeant ever. The Army accidentally transferred a number of file cabinets of paperwork into cold storage, my father's being among them. The Sarge advised him to keep his mouth shut and, apparently, everyone else who's papers were lost did the same. Needless to say, just about every officer on base was pissed and the Army tried to hold him over past his term. Eventually they found the cabinets and tried to send him to theatre.
Then, all of a sudden, the officers changed their tune, and a corporal was commissioned to drive him to the front of every line on base to get his exit papers. At the end of the day, he found his 1st Sarge waiting for him and he had some explaining to do. The First Sergeant had had his wife call the base pretending to be my father's wife, claiming that they had put down money on a house and a semester at college, and if the Army didn't release him when they were supposed to, she'd contact her congressman, Dan Daniel, (a ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee). He also explained that, "My wife is black and there's no doubt about it over the phone". So, apparently, in a panic about drawing the ire of Dan Daniel and the NAACP regarding an inter-racial couple during the early 70's, the base commander made sure my father was out the next day. Even though the Sarge was Army through-and-through, he'd seen enough political garbage in 'Nam to know it was a lost cause and didn't care to send more citizen soldiers into a quagmire created by Washington and the media. If he hadn't of intervened, there's a real possibility that my sister and I would have never been born.

When the Army found his papers again, they tried to keep him in service, but the First Sergeant tricked them. He had his wife, who was black, call the base, pretending to be my father's wife, and complain and threaten to make it a racial issue, as well as contact her representative in Congress, who was over the Army's money. This scared the Army into releasing my father within a day.

He led Battalion P.T. and after calisthenics he called the companies to attention... his next command was "ZONK"!!! It was like a scene from braveheart with 700 Rangers fighting past each other to get to their barracks and chill for the day! I loved getting ZONKED!!

I mean during my time in the Army. I had some pretty cool First Sergeants aka Tops. We addressed them as 'Top' in my day. They didn't seem to mind you calling them Top. Not all but most. In my day they were hardened Combat Vietnam War Veterans. So they got their respect. Never had any serious issues with First Sergeants, Master Sergeants or Battalion Sergeant Majors. It was the E-7's & E-6's that could be dickheads and assholes. Buck Sergeants, trying to prove they are leaders. So when I became one. I made sure I wasn't like my predecessors in ranks. Treat my subordinates as men and women.
