I received a notice from my draft board stating it was my THIRD notice (no idea what happened to the first two) and if I didn't report for induction they would basically 'come and get me'. You should have seen the look on my C.O.s face when I told him I had to go home and why. (I was a Corporal serving with the Marines in Vietnam at the time!) The Captain took the notice and told me he would handle it. Then he added, "Just one thing. If they DO come after you ... please take me with you!" Good officer with a good sense of humor!
Got my draft number by mail.
Of course it was while I was in the field in Vietnam, but it is the thought that counts.
I think I was like 314 or so.

@@izanagi711 common misconception DI aren’t that intimidating most were POGs. I myself got into a minor altercation with my drill hat when he tried kicking my rifle out of my hand. Told the senior “this recruit was protecting his weapon, sir”. His response was after an angry pause. “Good initiative bad fuckin judgement. You’ll pay later get the fuck outside”. Oh I paid but it wasn’t that bad.
It is my ITB instructors I didn’t want to fuck with. Many were battle of Fallujah veterans. You could tell there was something wrong with them. Like the type that would actually fuck you up or completely snap and kill your ass if you fucked up. This guys are the ones that got my ass ready for combat. It wasn’t boot camp which was a cake walk compared to ITB.

I remember when they did the 1972 draft. My birthday was #3 on the list. I found this out when I was in Air Force boot camp! I won the $50 bucks when everybody had put $1 a piece in the TI's hat to see who had the lowest number! Almost nobody was drafted that year.

i was in the airforce and we were on a maneuver in the woods that was scheduled to be three days. it snowed on the first night so we took THE BUS back to the base. and when i say Bus i mean the kind of bus with AC and leather seats. the lieutenant bought us beer and beef jerky at a truck stop because the trip would last at least another two and a half hours... doesn't matter, i served!

@@Daddyvader7 yes it used to be 27, but they recently raised it to 39. Generally though, if you are over 32 most military branches will NOT want to enlist you unless you are 1. physically fit 2. Have a skill that is readily applicable to a needed vocation and 3. have no major injuries or disabilities. Older recruits have a much much harder time adjusting to military life then younger ones.
