- Fats Domino was one of the true originators of rock n' roll music. And though his music was a sensation and he toured the world for decades, today you might not know that much about the musical pioneer. Perhaps surprising for those who've heard the name but don't know the music, Fats Domino died recently - in 2017 at the age of 89. During his long and storied career, Domino lived through the birth of rock music, segregation and desegregation, and eventually the horrors of Hurricane Katrina in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. Throughout all of this, he maintained his level head and cheerful sensibility, as well as his flair for performance. This is the untold truth of Fats Domino.

Fats Domino certainly has not, nor will he be forgotten. He is a Rock & Roll great.
Fats Domino IS rock and roll. Everything rocks and rolls from him.
Feeling blessed to have seen him perform live at the New Orleans Jazz Fest. I've been to a lot of live shows, but seeing Fats Domino is a treasured memory.

I seen him play at Hollywood casino casino magic at the time, my aunt lived around where he lived in the lower 9th ward and my little sister spend a lot of time at her house and she meant him a few times when was walking the neighborhood
I believe Fats Domino never got the full credit he really deserved mainly because of the wild men of rock and roll such as Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. Just my humble opinion.

Oh , I don't know if I agree. Fats Domino was always a giant as far as I am concerned. I know during Hurricane Katrina everyone was worried about him!! Elvis loved him

Thank God we have the technology to preserve the music and performances of this giant of an artist. I loved him when I was a teen and I still listen to him regularly. He'll be with us for a long, long time.
I've been a musician for 51 years, I've got a few of his songs in my repertoire. Every time I play one of them, I get a good response from the audience, makes me feel good inside. RIP great one.
He passed in 2017! What! An actual rock legend that lived a very great life!
I regret not going to his second line here in New Orleans, when he passed.

Ain't That A Shame is my favorite Fats Domino song and I think you're very wrong about him being forgotten. He'll never be forgotten and his wonderful songs and style are remembered and influenced every artist that has come along since his heyday and will always do so. Extending his style and memory for as long as music lasts.
As l understand it, he was the best selling artist of the 50's and early 60's. He was a hit machine. I love his style of blues mixed with rock and roll. What a great musician! R. I. P., my talented friend.
The pink album The Fat Man was my favorite since I was 4 years old. My older brother loved that album and played it everyday after work, and I’d
sit in his room & listen with him. To this day at 68 years old I still know all the words to every Fats Domino song on that album.

I have always absolutely loved Elvis, since I was a little girl, my Dad was a big fan of Fats Domino, and he introduced me to a lot of early rock and roll music, which I still love today.
He had a great hairstyle back in the day.
I can still remember my grandpa singing “I found my thrill……oooon blueberry hill” when I was a kid like it was yesterday. Sadly it was 40 years ago and he and the fat man have both moved on to another world.
My grandpa used chase my grandma around singing blueberry hill. He was half Louisiana creole and Mexican American. Makes me proud and happy every time I listen to Fats Domino.
He was and still is through his music a National / International treasure! Fats was a good man through & through! He set a standard not many can even come close too. Besides being a musical genius the man had class & set a good example for everyone !! I have no doubt he's got a beautiful pair of Angel wings & that he has the nicest sounding piano up in heaven & he's entertaining all the good souls up in God's kingdom!! RIP Fats & hope to see you on life's other side someday!!

My late father's FAVORITE musician. I grew up listening to him. He told me stories how, in 1950s Louisiana, he was admonished by his father and older relatives for listening to a black man's music. It never deterred his love for Fats' music, and every time i hear his music i think fondly of my dad.

Thank you for doing this video on Fats Domino. I grew up with listening to his records. He was friends with my uncle. Anyway. I thought he had passed away a long time ago. But then I heard he had been living in Louisiana and they lost their home in 2005 Katrina. I was sad to hear he had passed away before they could rebuild it back. Peace be with his friends and family.

Antoine Domino, the greatest of the greats. The reverence Elvis had for Fats was totally sincere. They were lifelong friends. Fats and Dave B changed the game.

Fats Domino transcended the music world. You could just see the love and joy emanating from his soul for life and humankind. What a beautiful spirit. RIP.

I'm not sure why he's called shy. He used to come into the bars all the time and drink with us as if we were all on the same level. He was always a super nice and kind person to me.
Years ago I got a Fats Domino box set from the german reissue company Bear Family. Amazing how much music Fats recorded!

I liked Fats long before Elvis & the Beatles. My folks said Rock-'n'-roll was from the devil & NOT to be listened to. So I ONLY got to hear it at a friend's house. Man o-man my parents were strick be everyone's standards, this was the 1950's & early 60's.
I was raised on his music, my mom bought every record he put out. She was a hugh fan of his and would play those records every Sunday morning
I can’t name a bunch of his hits but I enjoy much of Fats music. When I drove cross country in an 18 Wheeler I found Fats music was great to sing along with and keep me energetic when I had a lot of miles to put in.

I loved his songs especially 'Blueberry Hill' I didn't know what the words meant at four years old--I would sing it to my grandfather's hogs from my swing. My grandmother did not correct me as I sang I found my thrill; she would sing with me.

I heard he love Blueberry pie someone use to make delicious blueberry pie for him and he made a song about it, my grandmother told me.

I wrote a note to Fats a number of years ago., telling him how much I had enjoyed his music.He very graciously responded thanking me for remembering him.
As a white kid in Alabama, I learned at a young age, black musicians are the reason we have rock n roll. And I grew up listening to oldies 106.9 in Bham Al. I knew all about Fats Domino and many others. What a great time for music, 50s to the 80s

Fats was an icon and everyone in the music industry understood his awsome music ability his shows were entertaining and you never came away with the feeling that it could have been better due to fact that you were observing genuine R&B my brother bought home an LP from Fats which at the time I didn't think very much of but after him repeatedly playing it over and over again, I was amazed at his versatility he was indeed a musical genius in every respect. It wasn't necessary to compare him to Elvis, he was bigger than Elvis and I am sure Elvis was aware of this.

Ilove fats domino.. his voice is friendly and young...his piano was happy, little Richard, was great too ...the composer of "go Johnny go" (whose name escapes now) is super great to rock and roll as are all others..Elvis was a giant and he is remembered because like Joe Louis, some people are just memorable.. not every boxer is Joe Louis and not every singer is elvis...I am just happy and glad I lived my life during the birth of rock and roll and I enjoyed all rock and rock artists and I loved rock around the clock by Bill Haley ,the world danced to rock around the clock but few people know or remember Bill Haley...Who said life is fair? Watch Sally Rafael TV specials on rock and roll greats...some greats did not end up so great...some became homeless and forgotten...life is life , it can be both beautiful and cruel

I think we kind of forgot how famous he was. I also think he’s almost being punished (at least as far as name recognition in 2022) for never having any scandals or drug addictions like other rock n rollers from that era did (no such thing as bad publicity and all that).
It sounds like he had an interesting life and I for one would love to see a good bio pic about him. But they would have to find the perfect actor to do him justice.

Louis Jordan is the original father of what was to become known as rock&roll with his 1949 hit song "Caledonia", and guys like Fats and James Brown followed his path. Jordan, like many early r&r musicians, had spent most of his career in jazz, especially with Lionel Hampton's big band. But when big band music started to fade he started playing rock&roll...as the jazz musicians of the day called it. Curiously enough, when white musicians and singers jumped into the burgeoning rock&roll craze following in the footsteps of guys like Jordan, the music universally known as "rock&roll" became rock&roll only when white guys played it, and was assigned the new name of "rhythm&blues when black guys played it. Crazy...but that was still in the time when there was an informal barrier separating anything black from everything white, and vice versa. So the music was separated accordingly...though it was the exact same form and sound...the exact same shared cultural trend. Nevertheless, it was still a creative dynamic period in america we should all take pride in.
I've heard accounts from several people who played with or saw him in the years before he hit big - almost all say he had the house in the palm of his hands from the 1st song. Maybe the stage fright developed and worsened over time. I love the stories about the riot on this video. Fats kills it on piano, and embodies the New Orleans sound.
