I don't, they are too expensive and I'm just an amateur. I can probably get more gains by training and dieting more effectively before I need a supershoe. Paying for a coach > paying for a supershoe.
For me it’s all about fit, comfort, stability and speed. The shoe I’ve found to tick all those boxes is the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3. They fit well, very breathable, very cushioned but very fast! The rocker just keeps me going without the fatigue in my legs.
I'd suggest doing a separate video versus of super trainers. That way we'll get more shoes to compare between the two categories: the super shoes and the super trainers.
Yeah, I’d love to see how the Adios Pro 3 compares. It’s what I’m using now for a lot of my runs, and, for me at least, I find it to be really good for my easy stuff but really shines when I pick up the tempo. I’m not that fast of a runner (despite what Runna says, I’m not going to get near the 3:25 they predict for my marathon in November), so seeing the comparisons from someone who actually is is nice.
I think these super shoes would be better tested for the distances they were designed for: half-marathon distance and above. I think we would be able to tell the personality of the shoe more the more tired we are and in the different strides and forms one would transition in a long distance run. I personally wouldn’t choose a marathon shoe for a 1K trial. Nonetheless, it is interesting to see which of these supershoes would do well in very short distances like in the video.
Yeah, but the pro marathon runners do run this 1k pace or better for the full stretch. So still this pace comparison could mean something, if the sample size was bigger.
Well a mate of mine recently run the York 10k. I saw a photo of him in the front pack, all of them (about 15 people) were wearing Nike Vaporfly's Next % 2. That told me a lot about the Vaporfly 3.
Now that Hoka finally have put Peba foam in their shoes, the sky is the limit. For me the Mach X Training shoe with a layer of Peba is probably my favorite long run shoe in my rotation.
I’m worried about moving away from Nike. I love the Alphaflys and choose them over the Vaporflys even for shorter races. I would have liked to have seen the Addidas shoe in the mix. So much choice these days! Great video Andy 👌
I feel like with the first shoes your ankles were both collapsing towards the inside. With the second shoes your left ankle was collapsing more than the right one. The third shoes looked a lot more stable on both ankles and the fourth ones looked good, too, not as good as the third shoes. I wonder if you'd feel the difference in your joints if you do longer races in each... Thanks for this review, very interesting to see even though I will most likely never need super shoes 😅
@@runningchannel I'm not a physio, but I did competitive ballroom for a couple years, you develop an eye for small details in body positioning 😅 Thank you for your nice answer
Based on your feedback on the Sky+ feeling flat, it would be good to see whether the Edge+ suits your mechanics better if you havent already tried them. Id also be interested in this comparison as I would naturally prefer the Edge+ but 90% of reviewers always seem to prefer the Sky.
I did the switch from original Sky to Edge + They both have same plate geometry, just more drop on the Edge + (+ 3 mil) limiting that impression of sinking on very low drop of the Sky. Did not run in the Sky +
Test by running same repeatable pace indoors (no wind, same temperature) starting from the same resting HR. The result which gives the lowest average HR over the distance can suggest the shoe which requires less effort over the distance.
I use the Sky+ since I found it fits my foot as well as running style best (10k pb in it) . The foam does soften up a bit after 40km or so. All of these are great and I enjoyed this video. Can't wait to see the next one!
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Just goes to show how much a shoe can make a difference. I ran 5k in the Hoka Rocket X & 1 week later ran 30’s quicker in the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro’s
I bought Kiprun 900X based on the previous video. First try of a super shoe and loved it. They’ve now done 600km and still good for anything up to a half if you maintain 4:30/km. Hoka next! Thanks Andy.
Interesting video. Always fun to know which brand/model to look for if I ever have to purchase a super shoe. Kudos to Andy for a fast KM. Astonishing ! But im really impressed that he resisted to look at fields for almost 3 minutes there, during a run !
its important for all running shoes to test them out but especially for these class since you will essentially run your races at full speed in them. I tried almost all of the market before settling in for the metaspeed sky+. Speed they have all for me but this ones are also stable as hell and suit my front/midfoot strike. Been my go to for all distances up to the marathon :)
@@PringlessAts64 No, I mean the Vaporfly 3! What is surprising about that? It is a top speed shoe that is very popular with most people and rightly so!
Another interesting addition to a test like this would be the Metaspeed Edge+. The Edge+ has the plate lower and the configuration is similar to the SkyV1. I don't entirely buy into Asics's cadence vs stride, but the Edge+ just lets me roll along once I hit that sweet spot. I've seen many posts on Reddit say it feels like the orginal Vaporfly.
As a slow runner hovering around 5min/1k pace i can't justify any supershoe. Just switched from Clifton 8 to Mach5. I felt that the clifton became sluggish as a picked up the pace. Tried clifton 9 at the shop, still felt pretty slow (comfy though). I think there are a lot of hobby runners who would appreciate a pace comparison of universal daily trainers like Clifton, Mach, Saucony Speed 3...etc.
If you are around 5:00/km as your normal "training" pace (not race or max effort), you should jump on the carbon shoe wagon. The carbon shoes have very different mechanics from cushy jog trainers. Another thing is 5:00/km is around the separation point of running and jogging, which have different form and mechanics. When the same effort, just by changing form, you'll find yourself at a much faster pace, and have unlocked more potential space. In short, try one, you may find yourself not just faster for a few seconds, it could be up to 30s/km as cruise speed. (faster pace induced form change + efficiency of the shoe itself)
Went looking for these runs on your Strava as looks a nice road for such a test :) Couldn't see the actual runs but somewhere near Woburn I think. Not overly surprised a relatively firm shoe came out fastest in a 1K all out effort. Maybe these days the shoes are sufficiently close that it is more about how they feel to you. Of these, I have the Vaporfly 3 and Rocket X2 and did a similar test with mile reps at about my 5K pace albeit alternating on the same day. The Vaporfly definitely "won" for me but the Rocket X2 was still good too. Agree though that the Vaporfly 3 has a sloppy upper fit and I really had to pull in my laces a lot to get a good lockdown which seemingly was an issue for you here.
I'm completely the same as Andy - I splurged once on a pair of Hoka Carbon Xs, and loved the light upper, the energy return from the carbon plate, and the overall cushioning I associate with Hokas. On the other hand, the one pair of Ons I tried - one of their "Cloud" line - was so firm and so hard that I ended up returning them to the store after two or three runs. I have arthritic knees, now, so I'm all about cushioning, these days; especially as the only person I'm racing is the guy whose face I shave every morning.
A couple of questions. Do you think your pace was affected by your perception of how fast the shoes were when running? Are you concerned by how much you were over pronating, could this lead to injury?
I have all 3 versions of the vaporflys. Still hoping the 3's get better but i echo your comments. Due to the bad weather i had to get the 1's out fron retirement, they have done 570miles, only went and got a parkrun pb. Wish i could get a new pair of 1's, without doubt the fastest, not the most comfortable, the 2's win that award. Nice video
(IMHO) I absolutely can't stand the Nike Vaporfly 3. It made my legs fatigue very quickly, with no energy return, and felt too firm. But that's just my experience though, I'm sure it's very good for other runners. I wish they would just make the VF3 like they did the first version. That was the G.O.A.T.

How did you standardize your preparation for each time trial? As we runners know, we can feel like crap one day and great the next. Adequate recovery between trials? Heart rate variability/recovery score? Sleep score? Nutrition? Current training load? There are so many factors that could have confounded your results, especially if you didn't at least document them.

The biggest difference between the Hokas and Nikes seemed to have a sweet spot on the forefoot, as if they're specifically 'tuned' to strike in a certain spot. The foam feels bouncier than the Vaporflys, maybe a little firmer, giving the impression of running taller. The Nikes are light, fast, comfortable but don't feel really remarkable in terms of responsiveness. The Hokas really feel more responsive than the Nikes. In fact, I think the Adidas Takumi Sen 8 feel more responsive than these Nikes. Also, due to the slightly wider footprint and more foam on the lateral side, the Hokas get the nod as being a bit more protective and stable than the Nikes. I will be using them primarily on the track for short distances and 400m training. I like the snug fit of the Hoka upper, similar to my Adidas racing spikes.
I really like your testing videos! My guess is that you will be 2:50 or better in the Adidas Adios Pro 3 and maybe 2:52-2:53 in the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3. I wonder if you would break 3:00 in a heavier daily trainer.
I think to test these shoes properly you need to put 50 to 100km in them. To wear them in. And then do a 10km minimum to properly put them to work. I didn't like my speed 3's when I first got them. So much so I swore I would never buy Saucony again. Now I reach for them as often as possible and just bought a pair of endorphin pro's.
@@runningchannel Many thanks!!! VERY curious about the Prime X...been trying to purchase a pair for about 3 months now but they've been out my size...😞
U need a bit more thorax rotation and core stability so the pelvis is not doing all the job. This ends to pronation of your feet and knee/hip dysfunction…. U definitely need a cushion shoe mate!! Thanks a lot for the review!
Test would of been complete if you included the adidas pro 3 and saucony pro. I think both those shoes suit a wider spectrum of runner. Personally the adidas pro 3 you can't help but feel the energy return. But I also run the takumi sen 9 which don't feel as quick but turnover is quicker as they're much lighter. I haven't put them against the clock yet but I think I will just out of curiosity.
Saucony makes two top-rated supershoes, the Endorphin Pro 3 and the Endorphin Elite. I know that you have to make choices about what to put in and what to leave out of any comparison video, but I'm a bit disappointed as I think more people would be interested in the Saucony shoes than say the On Cloudboom Echo.
In the last video we made in this series we had the Elite on the line up but maybe we will have to add their other offering in the next one. Thanks for the suggestion 🙌🏻
I do all of my running in the Adios Pro 3. I’m not elite but I like how cushioned they are. Racing shoes used to be rock hard and no good for a plodder like me but times have changed. I own a pair of the 1st gen Hoka Rocket X’s which were really good to run in but they’ve not got a look in since I got the Pro 3’s. That said, the Rocket X2 does look to be a substantial update to the original and of the shoes in this video, it’s the one I’d want to try
As a control it would have been good to four runs over four days in the same shoes. As any difference between the shoes that is smaller than the difference over the four runs in the same shoes would have to be discounted.
Sarah! She's trying to break the exact same 5k and 10k PB goals as I do. Haven't considered carbon plate shoes. Want to succeed by old-fashioned "fair means". (But deep inside I do secretly wonder if they could save me a minute or two. But so far this minute isn't worth 200 or 250 quid for me.)
@@runningchannel *them 😅...the team can test 4 shoes in an all out km. That way we see how each shoe performs with each person and (my fave) see everyone subjected to torture 🙂
I usually wait until the various models go on sale and try them out. It has been tossup as to whether I feel comfortable taking them beyond half marathon distance. Puma Deviate Elite 1, Alphafly 1, Prime X and Atreyu The Artitst have been good (the latter not really being a race option though). Endorphin Pro 1, NB RC Elite 1 and Adios Pro 2 have not been good for that distance, but solid options for shorter distance and workouts. Just picked up the Puma Fast-R and can't wait to try those out. They may replace the Endorphin Pros for the duathlon since they have a good tongue and heel tab to get the shoe on quickly.
As it happens I am currently looking for my first carbon plated shoes and was looking at these and some more. I am leanning towards Hoka x2 and Adidas adipro. Since they are not available in my country I really need to go somwhere to try them on first to see how they feel.
I think three factors that i look at when buying trainers is they have to be lightweight, comfortable, and the sole has to be grippy, but not to grippy.
Not the correct comparison for some of the shoes. What is your speed at mile 26 in a marathon? Energy return and cushion are key to running fast the whole distance of a marathon. A 1km race needs a super light shoe, which should beat any heavier shoe.
Out of these shoes I’ve only used the Vaporfly. It’s interesting as I think they’re excellent. I find them really fast, I think I prefer them to the Alphafly. V2 were a let down, I tho k it was the upper they just felt dead but V1 were great and I still have a pair boxed
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Unfortunately shoe brands will always be chasing revenue - while for athletes yes improvements are welcome, but so is consistency. Nike made two great iterations of the Alphafly/Vaporfly and then in their bid for more sales have created a shoe that is worse than its predecessors. I despair both because we lose some great shoes as every season comes to a close, and I know that as long as companies need to make momey this will never change.
@@runningchannel I use Boston 10s and recently got the Boston 11s (half price due to the 12s coming out) as daily’s. Takumi sen 8 for speed work. I have the first hoka rocket x, think Andy’s sold me on the new pair
Good looking shoe by On Running but none of them are hideous to look at, they'd be too hard for me. Feel the Vaporfly Next% 3 has gone softer compared to the Next% 2 and is more for longer races now but the Hoka seems to be the natural progression from the Next% 2. I have the Meta Speed Sky V.1 and like them but they don't feel as enjoyable as some others.
@@runningchannel for the shorter stuff, I’m with Andy and going back to the Next% 2, half marathon and up I think I’d go Adidas Prime X Strung or this could be where the Next% 3 could shine
I think this is a little bit misleading, as any racing flat would do better on this distance. I know I run 1 K or a mile faster in Adidas RC 2 or Adios 6 than in my Vaporfly Next 2 or Adios Pro 2. But the result is the opposite at 10 K or Halfmarathon. I actually run 5 K faster with Adios 6 than Vaporfly. It has a much better turnover.
It simply isn't fair for people like myself that need a wider fit that choice of shoe is significantly reduced. As a cyclist too it's standard to have a narrow and wide fit of pretty much every saddle just wish that were the same for running shoes
Trial a pair of barefoot shoes next time as a control w/o any fancy cushion or carbon plate tech. For shits 'n giggles. I'd recommend the Xero HFS, or Vivo Primus Lite 3.
Can’t lie you always diss Nike all of the versions and reviews 😂 but ig not everyone can be a fan but it’s weird because everyone thinks there the quickest
Have to say my experience with the new Nikes have also been similar and disappointing. They feel kinda slow and energy draining tbh. I ran 16km in them last week sunday and it felt like an uphill battle despite them being new and perfect weather conditions. Meanwhile my adios pro 2 which has over 300km on them while running in severe rain was faster and smoother. Maybe its my running mechanics but damn I feel so dissapointed in the newest nike. Honestly thinking I should have stuck with adidas for my big runs this year.
I suggest a more scientific approach: - run 2km at 4min/km pace in each shoe - record your average HR for the 8 minutes The lower the HR, the better the running economy
How do you choose your carbon plated shoes when there are so many to choose from?
I don't, they are too expensive and I'm just an amateur. I can probably get more gains by training and dieting more effectively before I need a supershoe. Paying for a coach > paying for a supershoe.

I have some hoka’s and I love them!
Great! which model?
@@runningchannel Hoka Mach 5! Been running in them for a couple months now and they have been great so far.
4:57 agreed.
I really like your testing videos! My guess is that you will be 2:50 or better in the Adidas Adios Pro 3 and maybe 2:52-2:53 in the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3. I wonder if you would break 3:00 in a heavier daily trainer.
Have you tried using the shoe lock for your laces? Helps to keep the foot in place, highly recommend but fair enough if it aint your thing.
Vaporfly 3 is now more suited to half and marathon distances
Interesting! Is that what you use them for?
Great video! Loved the last one on this “series, too! Why no Adidas, TRC?
Guess we will have to add it into part three… which shoe from them?
Andy, if you were going to run a MAX effort 2 mile run, what would your top 3 pairs of shoes be for the 2 miles ?? In order of preference?? Thanks
That's actually a fairly scientific method of testing. Maybe you can subject the rest of the team to the same torture...for science, of course. 🙂
I think that's only fair, we will get him lacing up another round soon then. Any picks?
Missed my faves, the Brooks Hyperions!
The Elites?
Very good try. and good advice indeed
You should do this test again, but do one more kilometer with old-school racing flats like Saucony A6 or something
Gr8 video , would you recommend hoka rocket x2 for 10krace?
Would of tried the Metaspeed Edge+ too as the plate is in a different position to Sky so may propel you differently.
No Saucony? Try the Saucony Sinister for a 1km run! 🙂
I think three factors that i look at when buying trainers is they have to be lightweight, comfortable, and the sole has to be grippy, but not to grippy.
These are not trainers tho, they are racers
Great video. And I’ve never noticed before but is Andy a supinator?
Great video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it 🙌🏻
Not the correct comparison for some of the shoes. What is your speed at mile 26 in a marathon? Energy return and cushion are key to running fast the whole distance of a marathon. A 1km race needs a super light shoe, which should beat any heavier shoe.
Do you think going a 1/2 size down in the Vaporfly make any difference on your review of them?
Andy! You can't be doing your 1k time trials here! The road keeps telling you you're going too fast! Slow down!
Out of these shoes I’ve only used the Vaporfly. It’s interesting as I think they’re excellent. I find them really fast, I think I prefer them to the Alphafly. V2 were a let down, I tho k it was the upper they just felt dead but V1 were great and I still have a pair boxed
That's interesting! Would you ever try another brand?
@@runningchannel Absolutely! It’s just cost. I have 3 Vaporlys, 3 Alphaflys, Invincible, Adidas Adios Pros, Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 (love these)..
What shoe would you recommend for a downhill marathon? I’m running the revel marathon in Las Vegas in April
You should've tried the Saucony pro3 or Elite instead of the On's or Asics
They're on our list don't worry 😁
You must try the saucony elite crazy fast Shoe but too fast for me lol :D
For most runners pace slower than 4:30 min/km probably makes little to no difference, including myself.
No saucony?
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Unfortunately shoe brands will always be chasing revenue - while for athletes yes improvements are welcome, but so is consistency. Nike made two great iterations of the Alphafly/Vaporfly and then in their bid for more sales have created a shoe that is worse than its predecessors. I despair both because we lose some great shoes as every season comes to a close, and I know that as long as companies need to make momey this will never change.
Id really want you to test the Sacouny endorphin elite or pro3
Nice video. Would have liked to see adidas and saucony also
They are on our list don't worry! Which is your favourite shoe from those brands?
@@runningchannel I use Boston 10s and recently got the Boston 11s (half price due to the 12s coming out) as daily’s. Takumi sen 8 for speed work. But I don’t have adios pro so would be interested in Andy’s/all of your opinion. Have also had endorphin pro 2 a couple of years ago but no other saucony shoes. I have the first hoka rocket x, think Andy’s sold me on the new pair
What about saucony? Rocket X2 vs Saucony Endorphine Pro 3? 🙏🙏
Andy was a huge fan of the On looks too. What would be your next shoe of choice??
@@runningchannel for the shorter stuff, I’m with Andy and going back to the Next% 2, half marathon and up I think I’d go Adidas Prime X Strung or this could be where the Next% 3 could shine
We need you to do a 5th test in just box standard secondary school PLIMSOLLS.
YIKES!
The slow mo shots seem to show a considerable amount of ankle movement. Is this normal for you, or a huge stack height related effect?
Its called pronation and its completely normal mechanics of the human ankle and foot to absorb impact while running.
Did you wear the same size in every shoe or did any of them fit smaller or larger than your usual size?
Adidas Adios Pro 3?
Don't worry they're on our list 😁
Have you seen our review of the Ultrafly?
wow, never thought Nike would drop the ball so badly
Have to say my experience with the new Nikes have also been similar and disappointing. They feel kinda slow and energy draining tbh. I ran 16km in them last week sunday and it felt like an uphill battle despite them being new and perfect weather conditions. Meanwhile my adios pro 2 which has over 300km on them while running in severe rain was faster and smoother. Maybe its my running mechanics but damn I feel so dissapointed in the newest nike. Honestly thinking I should have stuck with adidas for my big runs this year.
I suggest a more scientific approach:
- run 2km at 4min/km pace in each shoe
- record your average HR for the 8 minutes
The lower the HR, the better the running economy
Wich of the 4 do you use in a marathon?
All of these would be great for a marathon
Personally I stick w Saucony
I have wide feet and wear 4E in New Balance and 2E in Brooks. Are any of these available for people with wide feet?
You might want to look at the Altra Vanish, a carbon plated shoe focussing on wide feted folk
