I'd really love to see you running in Vaporfly once more at the end of the experiment. You might be getting a bit more used to that 1km flat effort and thus running quicker with the later shoes (just knowing the course, pacing yourself the best way, etc.)
This is a very valid comment. Andy would be the first to admit he's not anywhere near the fitness he used to have but this effect could be significant even for top athletes. Most top athletes will run strides as part of their race warm up, as well as some the day before. I strongly suspect he'd run significantly faster in the Vaporflys if he'd gone back on day 5. That said I do think competitors have caught up, my favourite shoe is still the Alphafly though 😁
Another great video. I love seeing the gear test videos, especially as someone who is literally just re-starting their running journey, after not really "running" for almost 20 years. I used to run between 5-10 miles almost everyday, but thanks to some horrible injuries and a crash it has taken me this long to get myself back to a point where i can start again. I've gone from running 5K in under 19 mins, to barely managing it in 35 mins.
@@runningchannel ooh that's a good question. How about things like best running socks, and compression gear to help with aches/recovery, best compression running leggings.

Puma have just brought out a new shoe called Puma Fast Fwd Nitro that they say is specially for the 5k 10k it's lighter than the Fast R slightly lower stack, still got about 34mm in the heel I think but has some foam cut out the heel and toe off to give it a different midsole geometry and has a carbon plate also. I've heard the Meta Speed Sky are so good for shorter to half marathon distance so don't know if you will get anything different/better from the Fast R where as the Fast FWD is at least designed for anything upto 10km so would give you two different specific racing shoes. Unless of course you just want to buy the Fast R to have the Fast R as I've also bought many super shoes just to try but now I have a great collection that all do pretty much the same thing with very little between them lol.
Interesting test and yeah you could pick all sorts of holes in the testing approach but it clearly shows that if you don't want to use a Nike "super" shoe then there are now many other options.
Totally. There is virtually nothing between the top guys now. Nike, Adidas, Asics, Saucony and now Mizuno all have top tier super shoes out now with very little between them. It really could come down to what colour way you prefer to pick a shoe and it wouldn't make that much difference.
Tim, now you see that Saucony elite has beaten the vaporfly by 5 secs, does that justify that $280 price tag. Andy also says that it gave great energy return and should benefit long runs. …….. this may be a one off, as more elite runners still seem to prefer the vaporfly NExt%..
@@hkim9151 Don't think can read too much in this 5 secs. The Vaporfly was the first run and there has to be an element of getting used to the effort and the course and we don't know the weather conditions differed much day to day. Also next to nobody is going to buy these to run a 1K time trial.
@@runningchannel Saucony because that's my daily runner but I think I will go for the Pro 3 for my marathon in May because it has slightly more stability
Well it's more like Nike lowered itself to them. Ever since the V1 Alphafly and Vaporfly they literally have made each new version more heavy and a tad bit less responsive.
Interesting comparison. Would be interesting comparing the Alphafly 2 in this 1k time trial also. Heavier but some runners are getting pbs in 1500m in them hmmm. The Endorphin elites for a 10k race sound very good!
I know they're not one of the shoes you tested (so I'm not really answering your question!) but I think On's Cloudboom Echos might be the shoe to really challenge Nike, along with the Asics Metaspeeds. I thought it was notable in the European Championships back in the summer how many of the athletes in the marathons were wearing Metaspeeds.
I'd be judging this more on Andy's feel rather than the times. 5 seconds or so it with a margin of error and you could achieve that running the same shoe. Remeber as well for the Vapourflys Andy admited that he got the pacing wrong as well and may not have known the terrain, it wasn't flat so you can get better time with subtle pacing changes throughout the run. I've only bought 1 expensive shoe and that was the Asics Metaspeed Sky and I value those shoes highly as I had a great run in the London Virtual marathon, so these expensive shoes definately work, if I were to pick one of these based on Andy's feedback it would probably be the PUMA as I feel they might have offered the best stability/comfort/speed, although the Saucony look very good too.
very interesting test. It would have been significantly improved by using a team of 4 runners so you could control for fatigue and generate some averages. Surely thats easy to find at Club La Santa! (I'm just jesting)
I settled into the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 and I love it. As a 5h marathoner I am not as much interested in the energy return but more into the comfort and softness and they deliver. I tried many shoes but for really long distances they are my go-to shoe.
I'd guess they are mostly even for the right kind of runner by now. That being said I would love a part 2 with Adizero pro 3 mostly to hear how different/similar they feel to Andy.

Great video! Of course, one of the chief benefits of supershoes is keeping legs feeling somewhat fresh during longer efforts (half marathons and marathons), and I suspect that's where the NIkes really excel.
I am guessing Pumas as the top cat (get it? haha) because I feel Pumas have come a long way in running shoes since I originally started wearing them in high school.. plus Molly Seidel... enough said
Great video, interesting. I get what you mean about the Mizuno. Last year I did a similar test between the Saucony endorphin pro 2 and the 361 flame over 5k. I was REALLY surprised that the 361 flame was 22 seconds quicker!
Thank you for this video, I've got a half to run tomorrow and I was stuck between the mizuno or the puma fast-r. Now I know what to bring, I will say the mizuno felt harder initially, but now that broken in and I've fitted a heel insert to push me forward, they're a great shoe to run in.
Sounds like they are about the same in terms of time. I think there'd probably be about 5 seconds differential if Andy was wearing the same shoe every day. Just means that the others have caught up with Nike, so we have a good selection available to us depending on preference for fit and comfort etc.
Really interesting video, and yes it was mentioned not fully scientific and variations in use. They key part for me was how they felt wearing them while running, which says the best shoe is the one that feels right for you. Great video
Also a longer test would give you a better idea, as this supershoes are designed for longer distances (5K to marathon). I personally test the shoes doing 5x1km, with 2 minutes of rest for each pair in different days. Please feel free to take a look at my channel.
I have 2 pairs of the Next % 2, and am interested to see the 3rd version drop in about 5 days time. I'd love to test all of them though, would be interesting to see the difference to fit my running style.
I am using the Nike Maxfly sprint spikes. And honestly i like them but i feel more comfortable wearing the superelite 2 (non-super/carbon) spikes because you can feel the ground like you explained.
I thought Puma was a joke in the running shoe department but it seems like they are the best in terms of price/performance. I thought the store was just trying to sell me an average shoe but Deviate Nitro 2 looks more and more likely to be my shoe of choice.
Cool video. Results seem negligible. Better question would be…was sleep the same each day, was diet the same each day, stress levels, temp/humidity, etc. If it was 10 seconds difference I’d say the shoe maybe had an impact. But 4 seconds, there are so many variables that could contribute to such a small variance. Cool video either way!
You shou have did a run in a none super shoe. I don't need a she to make me run faster my two or three seconds, I need one that at the end of a marathon, the shoe feel just as comfortable at the end as it did at the beginning. I haven't run in a super she before so can't say if they don't already do that.
Maybe that I'm being a bit pedantic, but you weren't wearing the same kit for every run! Perhaps a run in a non carbon plated racer as some form of control would have been a good idea? And were climatic conditions exactly the same each day? Having said all that, a very enjoyable video! I can't imagine myself wearing any "supershoe2 these days but I absolutely cannot imagine myself wearing the Mizuno.
i have run three events this year so far welwyn half marathon watford half and welwyn garden 10k next up is the beaconsfield 5 marlow 5 and edinburgh marathon tempted to run edinburgh in the adidas prime x or endorphin pro 3
5s doesn't sound a lot, but that's huge in 1km - and the saucony were on the last day, when you were already fatigued. that could be a 25s lead in a parkrun, just choosing one of these fast shoes over another (and probably even more when compared to 'normal shoes'). lovely running there - i couldn't even dream of sub 3min kms :)
Those shoes are designed for longer races. No fair comparison when runn a 1K , shoes like the Puma are surely meant for shorter distances. while the alphafly and Myzuno are no way for Under 10 K . Also depends on how fresh your legs were in each day. so the=at test is totally inconclusive and totally biased. It s about how every one feels when running.
I was debating between Saucony and Vaporfly and seeing how you ran faster at the end while being sore is making me lean towards Saucony. I wonder what your time would be if you did Saucony first.
Reasonably simple comparison. It shows that they are comparable shoes, so it still leaves it up to the subscriber. If you prefer one brand over the other, give them a try. If you don't like the thin profile of Nike, maybe switch to something else. If you want to try a heelless shoe, you now have an option and so forth. For me, I know that the Vaporfly is phenomenal and I don't want to risk trying another brand that costs the same for what looks like it might be nearly identical performance, provided I don't actually hate the shoes. It's a case of don't fix what ain't broke, in my case.
I would have liked to have seen you include the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro since those have been the shoe used by the top placers in some marathons lately.
I’m not surprised that the times got progressively faster - I suspect that’s being progressively more habituated to the activity as I don’t imagine you do a flat out 1,000m every day for 4 days normally. Factoring in heart rate or power might even out differences. It does suggest to me that Nike has lost the monopoly on this segment. Will I be buying? No - most of my running is on muddy trails and I’ll stick to my Inov8s, thanks!
I would love to see you go through the trouble of randomizing these short intervals many times over so that you get a statistically significant comparison. Otherwise this video is not telling us much in that topic. Otherwise great content
Neat test. Definitely hard to cut out all the variables but still interesting. I don’t think super shoes are for me😅as I like a good all around shoe much better and something that feels stable. But I did buy my first pair of Hoka’s recently (Mach 5) so cushy and springy; it has its benefits but so far nothing has knocked saucony freedoms out of contention for my favorite show.
I'd like to see you do 1k every day for 4 days in the SAME shoe. Comparing the shoe times means nothing until we know how much variation your 1k all out time has to it
I don't do road races yet. I'm more of a mid distance track runner. I don't have a pair of spikes right now, but I'm looking for a sale on them to get one before spring track season. I honestly don't know what to look for in a race day shoe, so I couldn't tell you. My favohrite of the lineup is Saucony, but I'm biased because they're the only brand I've ever really ran in (TR15 for the trails and Triumph 19 for the road).
I did my latest marathon in the vaporfly next % (the older version , because I got them on sale). I found them very comfortable and quick, I've also done a few half marathons and 10km races in them. Before them I had the vaporfly 4%, which were also very good. I have to say the carbon plate definitely helps me run faster than shoes that don't have it, also I get injured a LOT less than when I was racing in racing flats. I've not tried other brands to compare. Also being in good shape from your training and having good conditions on race day are still definitely the most important factor, the shoes only help if you are also in good shape
I'm one of those rare runners who likes the Asics Metaracer best, though I wonder if they will keep making them. I'm wondering if the Puma might be a good alternative. I'm also wondering why you didn't also try the Metaspeed Sky or Edge in your test.
The Puma Nitro Fast-R have been designed with the midsole in the heel made with EVA and the PEBAX in the mid-forefoot, that's why despite the "supershoes" design, I prefer the Deviate Nitro Elite (all the midsole is made using nitro infused PEBAX).
In my last test the Saucony Ride 15 (EVA foam) were 8 seconds slower than the Vaporfly Next% and 7 seconds slower than the Endorphin Pro 2, on a 5K. Feel free to watch my test.
Bought a pair of Vaporfly a couple of months ago in a sale and I found the same when trying them out in the treadmill in the shop. It felt like they were turning over almost too quick and running away with themselves so seemed quite unnatural as my legs never turn over that quickly!
Not sure it was a totally solid test given you are super experienced in the Nike an the others were totally new and you weren't used to them. Guessing the Nike felt weird at first too Also...a true control would be a non-super shoe
I think this is not the right test for these shoes. Their technology gives the main advantages in the long distances, where the plate help in minimise the fatigue. I don't think the results would have been very different with 50 euros more rigid shoes (e.g. Adidas sl 20.3). This could be a nice test.
I'm not a massive fan of huge stack heights as they feel unstable to me. I also like a zero drop so all my shoes are Altras. I got a pair of their Vanish Carbons for £100 off so couldn't resist and in my first run I took a minute off my PB for 5km! I'm sure that wasn't all the shoe but fairly certain they helped.
Before: Saucony & Vaporfly, closely followed by Puma. Not sure about the mizuno After: Shame to see the Saucony go last, I think it would have been a little faster! I am not sure about the Mizuno, looks like an injury waiting to happen
Comment before watching the entire video. Not sure if they qualify as super shoes, but I have ~165k in my Hoka Carbon X3'S, which i really like. Also did my first stint in my (bought at sale) Adidas Boston 11's, which I bought for long runs which seem to do the trick. My plated shoes seem more speedy training shoes, rather than full racing equipment. Generally I like a bit firmer shoes. If I keep getting quicker i might consider these softer shoes for a future race though. Once I've saved up enough 😛
@@runningchannel building steadily, long runs now usually around 15k. I do intervals more often, usually around 12k of combined interval effort. Weekly ~30k combined I guess.
I am not an expert on these types of shoes however I have always thought the carbons were better at longer distances? More to reduce fatigue over a longer distance
They should increase performance over all distances but yes they come into their own over longer distances but we didn’t think Andy could take on four marathons in four days. Maybe next time….
Got the Rebellion Pro today and really think that they could work well for me. Still waiting on my delivery of the Endorphin Elite. Still have miles left on the Sky+ Still have training miles left on two pairs of Endorphin Pro 3 the Metaspeed Sky v1 and two other plated shoes. Think that I am set pretty well for race shoes for the next 12 months 🙂
Ran a decent but comfortable Half in the Wave Rebellion Pro and I have also ran a good 18+ mile training run in them. They feel good on the run if you can keep up with the tempo they like to push you on at but I get the feeling that anything more than 2 and a half hours in them would be a risk. They aren't my favoured shoe for this Springs Marathon as I have always found them a little odd to run in and like my legs need an extra days recovery afterwards. They are very quick and aggressive though and the outsole is amazing in the wet (so I could end up racing in them if rain is forecast). The Endorphin Elite I have only raced a Half in so far. They actually feel better to me when I dial the pace back towards Goal Marathon Pace. I need to take them on a 20+ mile LR test and if they do well on that then I think that I will be racing in them if it's dry. My only criticism of them during my early testing is the lack of grip on the outsole.

i have run three events this year so far welwyn half marathon watford half and welwyn garden 10k next up is the beaconsfield 5 marlow 5 and edinburgh marathon tempted to run edinburgh in the adidas prime x or endorphin pro 3
A fun video, looked painful though 😂 thanks Andy and the RC team, love videos like this!!
Our pleasure!
Totaly agree!
I was debating between Saucony and Vaporfly and seeing how you ran faster at the end while being sore is making me lean towards Saucony. I wonder what your time would be if you did Saucony first.
Familiarity with the route will help a lot for speed
That is a very good point!
But I would venture too say that fatigue on subsequent days has MORE of an impact
I bought Mizuno pro1 50% off, Best CP ratio right now😍
Reasonably simple comparison.
From an aesthetic point of view the Pumas look the best, I might try them next time I’m in the market. I use vapour flys at the moment for racing.
5" is a world!!! wow!!
I like your sunglasses here. They look great on you.
They are great aren't they?!
@@runningchannel What brand are these ?
I would love to see you go through the trouble of randomizing these short intervals many times over so that you get a statistically significant comparison. Otherwise this video is not telling us much in that topic. Otherwise great content
Would love to see the Adidas Adios Pro 3 in that test.
You should review the alphafly next %2
The puma ones look so fire 🔥 I'd prefer a stable shoe definitely.
Every day is different so I think you can't compare gear is this way. For me the most efficient way to run is barefoot :)
Interesting test, but 1k seems a bit short? Would you mind re-running with marathon distance? Maybe two days rest in-between though..
I think the Mizuno and Saucony could be the fastest but the Vaporfly will still feel the best
I’m surprised you didn’t include weight in the specs you presented.
Nike!!!
I'd like to see you do 1k every day for 4 days in the SAME shoe. Comparing the shoe times means nothing until we know how much variation your 1k all out time has to it
Cool video. I'm curious how they will do for longer distances? The shoes are made for long distance.
The Mizunos put me in mind of Vivienne Westwood rocking horse shoes. And they all made me think of Billy Whizz.
😂😂 Love that description!
What about 1km in traditional flats to see if supershoes even make a difference over such a short distance?
I'd love to see you compare the Decathlon carbon shoes to these
We'll see what we can do Nick! 😁
Interested to see what Andy thinks of the new NB fuelcell elite 😊 not a fan of Nike, love the Saucony Pro 3 and just bought the Mizuno 😁😁
Do you race in carbon plated shoes? What do you look for in a race day shoe? And which is your favourite out of this line up?
My choice of running is trails, so I need a nice grippy shoe to help with mud/snow/loose rocks. How well do you think these shoes fair off road?
Saucony
Vaporfly 2
ASICS metaspeed sky plus, are the real goats
I'm one of those rare runners who likes the Asics Metaracer best, though I wonder if they will keep making them. I'm wondering if the Puma might be a good alternative. I'm also wondering why you didn't also try the Metaspeed Sky or Edge in your test.
Great video
Nice comparison. Should have thrown in your favourite EVA shoe into the mix as well - could you go sub 3 in them?
The Puma Nitro Fast-R have been designed with the midsole in the heel made with EVA and the PEBAX in the mid-forefoot, that's why despite the "supershoes" design, I prefer the Deviate Nitro Elite (all the midsole is made using nitro infused PEBAX).
In my last test the Saucony Ride 15 (EVA foam) were 8 seconds slower than the Vaporfly Next% and 7 seconds slower than the Endorphin Pro 2, on a 5K. Feel free to watch my test.
I’m really surprised that ASICS metaspeed sky/edge didn’t make the list.
Vapourfly 2
I think its going to be the Nike Vaporflys!
You should have tried the Takumi Sen 8 or 9
Will have to test them if we do another time test!
Aren’t the slightly more expensive alphaflys faster than the vaporfly? Or is that a subjective thing that suits different runners?
I have to go with Mizuno as that is the ones I always wear
Bought a pair of Vaporfly a couple of months ago in a sale and I found the same when trying them out in the treadmill in the shop. It felt like they were turning over almost too quick and running away with themselves so seemed quite unnatural as my legs never turn over that quickly!
Not sure it was a totally solid test given you are super experienced in the Nike an the others were totally new and you weren't used to them. Guessing the Nike felt weird at first too
Also...a true control would be a non-super shoe
I think this is not the right test for these shoes. Their technology gives the main advantages in the long distances, where the plate help in minimise the fatigue. I don't think the results would have been very different with 50 euros more rigid shoes (e.g. Adidas sl 20.3). This could be a nice test.
Any reason the manufacturers aren’t making any of these “speed shoes” in the wider fits?
I'm not a massive fan of huge stack heights as they feel unstable to me. I also like a zero drop so all my shoes are Altras. I got a pair of their Vanish Carbons for £100 off so couldn't resist and in my first run I took a minute off my PB for 5km! I'm sure that wasn't all the shoe but fairly certain they helped.
I got those too, mainly for the wider toe box.
How could leave out the Asics meta speed?
Its surprising that a killer podium king Metaspeed is not part of the review. Puma is not even close,
it would be interesting to know your heart rate in all those efforts as well
Before: Saucony & Vaporfly, closely followed by Puma. Not sure about the mizuno
After: Shame to see the Saucony go last, I think it would have been a little faster! I am not sure about the Mizuno, looks like an injury waiting to happen
I got a 1cm plantar fascia tear using Mizuno, put me out for two years. Recently wore on a dog walk n the plantar started aching....
No adios pro 3? Can’t believe the Mizuno is more popular
Go back and do it two more times with Adidas and Asics
Think we will have to do a part two! Any other shoes you would want to be added in?
I still think the first alphafly would have beaten every other shoe... the second version however is quite underwhelming.
Once I've saved up enough 😛
if they're working for you then that's great! What kind of distances do you tend to run? 😁
@@runningchannel you don't say Andy hasn't run a marathon yet?? Someone should mention it to Rick and Anna so they can bring it up on the podcast 😁
Superhero who break the pace
I think Saucony 🤞
Got the Rebellion Pro today and really think that they could work well for me.
Still waiting on my delivery of the Endorphin Elite.
Still have miles left on the Sky+
Still have training miles left on two pairs of Endorphin Pro 3 the Metaspeed Sky v1 and two other plated shoes.
Think that I am set pretty well for race shoes for the next 12 months 🙂
Let us know how you get on Mark. Sarah's just smashed a PN in the Rebellion Pros and we hear a lot of good feedback.
How are you getting on with Mizunos..? Intriguing shoe. I find the fast r gives me bit of shin pain but it's close to the Vaporfly for me
Ran a decent but comfortable Half in the Wave Rebellion Pro and I have also ran a good 18+ mile training run in them.
@@MarkSmith_Best-Athletics
Hi Mark
Appreciate the update 😊
So if you were going for a PB at 5 or 10K which supershoe would you reach for? 🤔
Thanks
Mark
I usually just go for the one with the most ridiculous colorway I can find.
I wish we could try a shoe like this to find which works best for us before committing to spending so much money on them.
Which of these shoes would be best for a 2 mile all out effort ??
