Honestly when it comes to having a "Rival" ,a person you went head to head with while aiming for the same goal, i think the people that dare i say would "qualify" to even being a Rival is Gary, Paul, Wally, Barry, Cheren, and Hau.
How about Hop and Marnie? I mean, you take on the same gyms, have the same goals, fight each other in the final tournament... And with Hop, you even take on the big bad guy together in a double battle.
@@Romidamn Marnie felt more like a person you happend to meet, not really rival-material... Hops whole character arc is scripted: he is severely weaker as you and can't keep up. So, I don't really see him as a rival. Bede however would fit the stereotypical rival mold

He should have included Serena that's the rival if you choose a Male character. He picked Calem who isn't in the game unless you pick a female character to play as
I do think Wally could be S tier. His team is definitely one of the best- even ROM hackers typically keep his team as is, they just give him proper moves and EVs. I do think Silver is B tier too, he has a pseudo-rain team which could be interesting with the right moves/EVs.
I think that X and Y trio is from a section where you double battle with each of you filling half a team so they only get three pokeslots. I would pair two of them up for a full team.
Love the whole XY part haha I do remember that Trevor and Tierno are usually battled in double, which explains why they have 3 pokemon each, since in doubles they would have a whole team. So maybe if you pick the best of both teams, they could be a bit higher tier than C, maybe a potential B? Also, Marnie is a D tier trainer with an E Tier team

Good to see my boi Barry is up there. The rematches against him in Platinum were insane not just in levels (his team gets stupid high level after enough rematches), but in team composition too. One of the most fun rematches in the series I find. Up there with the Colress rematches in BW2.

Beyond that XY kind of got.... poor treatment from Gamefreak (not 3rd game like the Gens usually do, on top of being poorly balanced due to experimental new-gameplay), it has a lot of unfair treatment by the players, IMO, because too many people are adults (now) and forget that these games are still 95% targeted at 10-12 year olds and not designed to be incredibly difficult but to be fun.... for kids.
@@horusschnopp1882 like- I dont get the "it's for kids" argument. I only blacked out once during all of Y version and I only used a Riolu I caught near the first gym. granted Riolu is much stronger than Shinx, but the game was also *far* easier. It's for kids is insulting to kids, they can be cleaver or they can brute force it with the one cat they like.

And there they suck hahaha

just so you know, trainers get less than 4 moves on a pokemon so that the AI, which usually isn't great, always picks a decent move rather than like using an irrelevant boosting/lowering move over and over because it doesn't see the KO with its attacking moves (a real issue even with modern pokemon AI)

The 6th gen Rivals bit was so good xD Might even be of the best Wolfey moments. Poor kids xD

Paul?
wally is so cool
@@Romidamn Marnie felt more like a person you happend to meet, not really rival-material... Hops whole character arc is scripted: he is severely weaker as you and can't keep up. So, I don't really see him as a rival.
Bede however would fit the stereotypical rival mold
@@smirglepapier531 why does it matter? Pigeonholing the games into these terrible gen 1 copycat roles is only gonna guarantee we keep getting "Pokemon: Basically the Same and Pokemon: Practically the Same" each gen

The X and Y "rivals" were a bunch of clowns. Does anyone even remember their personalities? The first girl was like, "let's do our best!", the big guy is just "hey i'm fat and stupid but I probably have a good heart (ironically probably not when I get older)", and the other one is like "and I'm the other one!"
The bowl cut girl is the nerd, the one with the vanillite shirt is the dancing guy, tall girl is your childhood fruend i think, the short girl is the other one
@@zacharybouck9769 Bowl cut is actually a guy
He shouldn't have included Tierno Trevor and Shauna as "Rivals" they are just your friends in the game who say in the game over and over that they don't want to be serious trainers. He should have included Serena that's the rival if you choose a Male character. He picked Calem who isn't in the game unless you pick a female character to play as
@@skotiaH2O actually?
Totally agree
I do think Wally could be S tier. His team is definitely one of the best- even ROM hackers typically keep his team as is, they just give him proper moves and EVs. I do think Silver is B tier too, he has a pseudo-rain team which could be interesting with the right moves/EVs.
*"Oon-Feh-Zaunt"*
I love the way you say it
*"o o n - f e h - z a u n t"*
I think that X and Y trio is from a section where you double battle with each of you filling half a team so they only get three pokeslots. I would pair two of them up for a full team.
Love the whole XY part haha
I do remember that Trevor and Tierno are usually battled in double, which explains why they have 3 pokemon each, since in doubles they would have a whole team. So maybe if you pick the best of both teams, they could be a bit higher tier than C, maybe a potential B?
Also, Marnie is a D tier trainer with an E Tier team
& an S tier characterization
Marnie has characterization?
@@emblemblade9245 yes, though she is lacking in importance or any form of arc or backstory really. Great design, well written dialogue (actually most of the games since bw have pretty good dialogue) but she never really has a moment, unless you count letting you into piers gym which is kind of not much
Good to see my boi Barry is up there. The rematches against him in Platinum were insane not just in levels (his team gets stupid high level after enough rematches), but in team composition too. There is a lot of offensive pressure from the get go with his Staraptor, and intimidate only makes it harder to respond to that effectively if your lead is physical.
One of the most fun rematches in the series I find. Up there with the Colress rematches in BW2.
The requirment is stupid though and he has awful natures on his mons renengade platinum made him max level right away with good natures
the fact that blue stood as the only S tier trainer made me feel too good to understand it
That was in the context of a gen 1 meta, aka only the first 150 pokemon. The more gens get added the worse the rivals get... for some reason.
Blue: "Am I great or what?"
Yes you are blue, yes you are.
Two decades later and is still the greatest rival.
Smell ya later
Saying that Hop missed the lesson om typings is hilariously ironic
Another great wideo as usual. Would be interesting to see Wolfe rank his favourite pokemon competitively.
15:27 Uunfezant and Jiggalith!
More like oonfezant

Love the wideos, Wolfey, keep up the great content! Are you doing an 'Ash's (fully evolved and/or leave Pikachu alone) anime teams VGC' ranking wideo?
Wolfe got no BUSINESS being that attractive in the thumbnail
I'll pretend to not have seen that mixed Haxorus with Surf.
I hope to see a mythical pokemon tier list soon! Loving all the competitive tier list content
unfezant really needs to run with Arial Ace, considering they're physical attackers and flying is very sparce on good physical attacks imo
I agree with the placements. I was going to put Wally's team personally on S tier; but after listening to your explanation, I would yeah, put him at A instead.
It's interesting to watch these videos, even though i'm just a casual story player. I would never be good at competitive because i require a Flareon on my team at all times.
You require the worst Eeveelution?
I love how much you've been uploading. A bit of a bright spot which there seems to be little of larely.

You need to consider the changes to the teams when you choose a different starter.
I personally like the XY characters. I enjoyed traveling in a group bc that’s how it would be if Pokémon trainers were real. They’re not overly memorable but I think people hate on them way too much
I hate them ingame I tv they good
Beyond that XY kind of got.... poor treatment from Gamefreak (not 3rd game like the Gens usually do, on top of being poorly balanced due to experimental new-gameplay), it has a lot of unfair treatment by the players, IMO, because too many people are adults (now) and forget that these games are still 95% targeted at 10-12 year olds and not designed to be incredibly difficult but to be fun.... for kids.
@@horusschnopp1882 like- I dont get the "it's for kids" argument. I was 10 when I played Platinum, it took me a few months, but I got all the way to the elite 4 using just the route 1 shinx I caught because I liked the cat. it cost the same amount when I got it as X and Y on release. I only blacked out once during all of Y version and I only used a Riolu I caught near the first gym. granted Riolu is much stronger than Shinx, but the game was also *far* easier. It's for kids is insulting to kids, they can be cleaver or they can brute force it with the one cat they like.
@@lizzytrip4560 and how old were you when you played y? Also 10? Not that it matters since its just your personal experience. All youve said here is that between playing plat and y you became good enough to best it a bit quicker.
Like i dont think ive ever lost a battle aside from the first one thats random in older gens (i lost to hops first battle once on purpose cuz i wanted to see if you could, you can lol) since i was like 12, in any gen, so i think thats as good of an argument as yours that its really all about not being a dumb kid
@@horusschnopp1882 Gamefreak themselves admitted to dumbing X&Y down because kids preffered Mobile games instead. Crystal & Emerald also had Kids as target audience but they are still challenging even today, especially if you dont use the Legendary.
At some point you have to take off the training wheels and latest gens fail at that.

Wolfey: Waah waaah
Me: Guess I'll Sleep
Wolfey: Finally, we're done with X&Y rivals.
Serena: Am I a joke to you?
I think Calem and her are both represented as one cause they run the same teams. Same thing with May and Brendan
serena and calem are interchangably the player character and your main rival just like how may is swapped with brenden
I think the justification for the trash rivals in X/Y was that you fought them all back to back in your last battles against them. I forget if you could heal up between battles. They still sucked, obviously.
@Dragongamer 7 iirc, don't Tierno and Trevor do most of their battles as double battles?
20:50 I love wolfey roasting the frick out of shauna
The only thing on this list I disagree with is Wally. He definitely belongs in S, simply because his team would do MUCH better than the other A tiers. (Yes, I am aware that they are seperated by their own metas. And I still stand by my previous point)
Hey wolfe I’m a big fan of your content, because of you my vgc knowledge has increased a lot,so whenever someone calls you a noob they should remember that they’re idiots cause a Pokemon world champion probably knows more about this game than anyone else.
I think with the three rivals from X & Y (Tierno and Shauna and such) there was still a way to cut them some slack by using the anime teams.
For example I recall Tierno having more pokemon in the anime and it mostly being a decent core for a rain team..
:) but I get that this is an episode for rival teams from the games. And there they suck hahaha
Well actually, Hop has a sixth pokemon from when you fight him in the Slumbering Weald post game. I think it was pinchurchin.
Really curious how you chose which teams for each of these like Blue has a ton of teams across a ton of gens and some change based on your starter

The frustration at Gen 6 rivals made me lol. I would have never known their Pokemon had 3 or less moves.
Hop: has one of the best pokemon ever, being able to boost it's attack upon entering the field, having amazing stats, amazing typing, and great moves with swords dance, behemoth blade, etc.
Wolfey: "yeah his team just isn't that great, I'll put him in C tier"
Wolfey has the best unedited videos.
Change my mind
For the X and Y "Rivals" I would've looked at their battle mansion teams to at least get 4 pokemon for fairness
It would have been better if Hugh used a Braviary instead of Unfeazent and a Darmanichad instead of the Virgisear
The fact that Silver, the best rival, was placed low enough to be in the same tier as anyone from X and Y is insulting af
Did you read the title
Next up do a top 10 or 15 favorite personal pokemon list! Would love to see that as you mentioned exeggutor!
just so you know, trainers get less than 4 moves on a pokemon so that the AI, which usually isn't great, always picks a decent move rather than like using an irrelevant boosting/lowering move over and over because it doesn't see the KO with its attacking moves (a real issue even with modern pokemon AI)
Then why not give them four decent moves? These guys got less than 4 just to make it easy for us, nothing beyond that
that is surprising tbh
“He’s got 2 snakes, which is interesting” this is the thoughtful commentary that I come here for
Day 36 of asking Wolfey to do “Why Malamar is a Threat.” #SquidSquad #CalamariCrew
True, with now Incineroar replacing U-Turn for Parting Shout it turns it into a setup fodder against Malamar. Moreover, Malamar can abuse all its stat boosts to funnel into Stored Power.
Marnie is one of the best rivals, she has such a chill vibe and her theme slaps
Oh... hes talking competively
Marnie is D tier in teambuilding but S tier in our hearts
Hey Wolfe, next time you rank blue you should do it based on his Fire Red and Leaf Green Rematch team. It’s the same as his Gen 1 team, but it drops pidgeot and rhydon for heracross and tyranitar. I think it’s a much better team in general
