By far the BEST instructional video I’ve seen on macrame. I love that you showed the beginning of each step and did so on both sides (which can be confusing). Thank you!!!!
I’m trying out macrame and this was really helpful. Felt like I was being thought in person and I didn’t feel rushed nor had to rewind it all the time. Thank you 👍🏼🥰
Made one of these today having watched another UA-camr’s video and found it left out some crucial steps that left me having to sort of figure it out on my own. Found your video and it was so thorough and exactly what I needed to be prepared for the next time I make this plant holder (tomorrow!) Such a great video, thanks for sharing! 🧡
Really great, thank you! Next time I would only use 110 inches of string for each piece; I had a lot left over (like others mentioned). The diagonal knot took me some getting used to, but can’t wait to use it more.
You're welcome. The diagonal knots are tricky at first. Sorry to hear you had so much extra string. Save those cut-offs! There are lots of fun projects to do with small scrap pieces.
Thank you!!! I just finished making mine, it looks lovely. I will def do some more. Also thanks to everyone who mentioned the leftover strings. I used 280cm or 110 inches of string and I still have some leftovers but I might make a longer tassel. Thanks again :)
This was a great tutorial, thank you! I will have to join the chorus of people saying the string length is WAY too long, though! I repeated the top pattern an extra time, and STILL each string could have comfortably been a metre shorter. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather that than them being too short, but I feel like I wasted an awful lot of cord. Still produced a beautiful hanger, though!
TYSM for this video! if i wanted to make it just a bit skinnier and smaller (for a mason jar), would you just take off a strand on each side or would this mess up the whole equation?
Why oh why didnt I read the comments before making this! Beautiful but so much extra string haha. Leave off like 20 inches each strand at least if you make it too ❤
You're a very good instructor and I look forward to trying this. A simple question; if you're using a stick, is it just a stick you've gotten from outside, or is it something you purchase?
Thank you! You can use a stick you find outside or a dowel from the craft store. You can find instructions for cleaning sticks and driftwood online. I usually clean mine with bleach diluted in water and give them a quick scrub with a scrub brush!
Eu amei sua didática! Não falo seu idioma, mas consegui entender todo o passo a passo. Gostaria de saber qual a metragem dos cordões? Muito grata! Sucesso.🌷
Excellent teacher - excellent project. I wish I had seen your videos when I first learned to macrame. The only question I have is "Why do we have so much waste at the end?" I have 3 feet to cut off, even with a generous fringe at the bottom.
Thank you! The extra string could be a result of variations in the thickness of different brands of strings or a difference in the length between the bottom of the triangle and the diamond at the front. It’s always tricky to estimate how much you will need for any given project but if you make more than one you can always adjust the length. There are also some great projects to make with smaller pieces such as earrings or keychains or tassels!
@@RachelColton Thank you for replying so quickly. Those are good examples to watch out for. I love my little plant hanger and will definitely make a few more just like it.
You could do any plant. Low light plants would probably work best unless you can get it close to a window. Something with hanging vines would look good or even a succulent.
I made this with 5mm I cut 120in and added extra knots still had a goos 12in tail, it turned out really nice and was only the second time I’ve done macrame great video but definitely cut less
Hi dear, can I have an opinion? First I want to thank you for taking the time to teach us your work. But for those who didn't know anything like me about macrame, it's tiring to watch every move you make and to listen takes time to learn. It would be much more interesting for you to show us how it is done just by showing the points, slowly and without talking so much because for any layperson to see how it is done, that is enough. Other people here on youtube do this and that's how I learned. And I'm still learning. Unfortunately others show very fast, but I think it is for those who are not beginners. The look also makes us learn without needing too much blah blah blah. lol Don't be upset because it's just my opinion ok? Your works are very beautiful and if you continue to teach us it will be very good A hug
Thank you for sharing your feedback. I’ve had many people comment that they appreciate the verbal instructions but perhaps I will try making a video in the future that is wordless. Or you could mute me 😆!
Thank you for the very detailed tutorial 🙏🏾. I’m a beginner and very confused. You mentioned on the second row of square nots to alternate leaving two strings out at each end. However, I’m not sure whether I’m supposed to include those two strings on the left side as I’m going right to left. I’ve started over 5 times to get this diamond shape 😩🙏🏾
Ugh! I’m sorry you are having trouble. Are you referring to the inverted triangle shape at the top of the design? Leave out two strings on both sides in the second row to form alternating square knots. In the next row, leave out four strings on both sides and so on until you have a triangle. Does that make sense?
Done. The problem is: if im using a small pot, the ropes are too long and its unstable. If using a large pot, it holds it perfectly, but is pushed away from the wall. But lovely craft. Loved it. :) (is there any way to make it more complex so the pot cant slip through easily between two threads?)
You could create more of a traditional netting at the bottom like the one I use in my other plant hanger video. You create a net using square knots. That will hold the pot more securely.
Hi Rachel! Thanks for this detailed tutorial! How did you affix this to the wall? I’m a bit worried about weight of my plant (6in pot) so wanting to see what others have done!
Hi! Thanks! The height is about 4.25 inches. The bottom is about 3.75 inches across. The top is about 5 inches across. You can accommodate a larger pot by starting the bottom portion farther down from the bottom of the design. Does that make sense?
Hi Rachel, I've just started making this, and I'm trying to do the math. I want to make it slightly wider to accommodate my pot width. How many extra pieces would I need to add to keep the shape and pattern, just wider? I did the math that I could and determined I would need two extra on each side, I think, so a total of 20 strings. Does that sound correct? Would I need to add four extra pieces for every added bit of thickness to keep the pattern even?
Yes that sounds right. You need to keep the number of strings even to make the alternating square knot pattern. You could add one extra string to each side or two or more!
@@RachelColton So I added a total of 4 extra pieces, so a total of 20 and it worked out wonderfully! for the bottom part instead of the widest being four knots wide mine was 5, and I couldn't be happier with it. My first ever macrame piece. Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Great tutorial and cute planter. Wish I hadn’t cut 165in. Wasteful. I even added a bunch of extra knots and left areas long to use up my string and still have about 48in to cut off at the end. Also my stick is only 9in (not 19) and is plenty big enough.
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial and your finished product! Sorry about the long cutoffs. Save these scraps since there are lots of fun things you can make with small pieces - earrings, key chains, wall hanging fringe, headbands, etc!
Apologies for the very late reply. The top diameter is about 5 inches. The height is about 4.5 inches. And the bottom diameter is about 3.75 inches. You can accommodate any size pot by adjusting the length of the string that comes around to make the knots in the front and by adjusting where you form the gathering knot at the bottom.
Glad you enjoyed this project and were able to add your own touches! I am working on my first macraweave and it’s taking the lead as my new favorite. I will get a tutorial up as soon as possible!
Sorry for the delayed response! The pot is about 4.25 inches high, 5 inches across the top and 3.75 inches across the bottom. You can adjust the size of the net at the bottom to fit a larger or smaller pot
I purchase rope and string from knotandrope.com, niroma studio, and modern macrame. There is a link with a discount code for modern macrame in the community section of my channel.

But way too much cord at the bottom. Wasted at least a couple of feet at the bottom bangs.

Thank you for the tutorial. I appreciate that you went slowly and explained it so it is easy to understand.
You’re welcome! Glad you found it helpful!
Great tutorial thanks may I just suggest much shorter strings as it's a lot of waste to cut in the end
I used 400cm and still very long, redo it and cut it into I made 2 plant hangers and still great length.
Came out super cute & very easy to follow! I used 3mm and ended up having an extra 2 feet of chord that I cut off. Just an FYI
Maybe the length allows for choosing a larger planter size and the length of space it will hang from the top. Adjust to your preference.
You have really explained step by step and made the process of making the plant hanger so simple n easy.. easily I made this on my own.. thanks

Just made this! Don’t cut 165 inches of cord!! WHAT A WASTE!!!!! I would cut about 135 inches or so, I had soooooo much left over.
Also I used a medium sized pot, around 6’’ so if your using a small pot like 4’’ just keep that in mind.
Keep your cut off pieces and use them for small projects such as earrings, keychains, tassels, or wall hanging fringe!
