Macrame Plant Hanger | Tutorial | Beginner | Square Knot | Twisting Knot
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2019
- Materials: 3mm single strand cotton string, metal or wooden ring (60-70mm)
Cut eight pieces of string to a length of 4.5 yards or 4 meters.
Double the strings over the ring. Use a 24 inch string to create a gathering knot.
To create the first branch, find four strings that are close together. Create about 18 square knots. Repeat with the next four strands to begin the second branch. Continue until all the strings have been used.
To complete the first branch, create twisting half square knots until the length of the twisting knots is the same as the length of the square knots. Repeat with the remaining branches.
Once all four branches have been completed, create the net for the pot using alternating square knots.
Close the net at the bottom with a gathering knot.
Trim the fringe to the desired length.
Note: To make a planter with three branches, begin with six strings.
Note: To conserve materials, cut half the strings to a shorter length. These will be the middle, or filler strings, of each branch. - Навчання та стиль
That top binding was taught to us 50+ years ago as whipping. We did it on the ends of skipping ropes.
This woman is great at teaching! A child could do this after watching her video. I bet all the negative thumbs down are people who are jealous of her abilities.
Agreed.
im 8 and ya i can its easy
to easy
8 made one at primary school was about 8 or 9
I am a chil and I did this so you are right
I use to make these as a tween, needed a refreshing & yes great tutorial.
I love how she takes her time and explain it, as she goes, making it so easy for any of us older ladies to follow and understand, so thank you, I can do this one without getting confused ❤️
Glad you enjoyed this one and found it easy to follow!
You know we older Ladies need a little X-tra help!👍🏼😂
You did a great job in this tutorial, Rachel! I use to macrame all the time in the late 70's and 80's and made so many different things. I am now 75 and wanted to do my old favorite hobby again. You were able to get me started on a few knots, which is all I needed. The plant hanger turned out so nice, thanks to you. A wine rack I made back in the day is on my radar now.
Yay! I’m glad you are getting back into macrame! A wine rack sounds very cool!
Rachel Colton, I'm a retired teacher and you are a gifted teacher. Great communicator. Thank you.
Thank you 😊! I used to teach elementary school. What grade did you teach?
@@RachelColton I taught music and P.E. to First - Fifth graders. I ordered the materials and beads.
I learnt this in craft class at school.
Thank you for refreshing my memory..💜🇦🇺
I used to add a coloured bead at the pattern change points..
You’re welcome!
This was my first ever attempt at macrame and it turned out so beautiful and I’m so happy with it. I thought that I’d never be able to figure it out but this video was so clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome! And welcome to macrame!
This was so clear and easy to follow! I'm IN LOVE with my hanger!!! Thank you so much Rachel!
Anna Nelson you’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I just used this tutorial to make my first plant hanger! It turned out super cute!!
I used teal macrame cord and then orange cord for the wrapped around bits for some contrast - i also added some wooden beads in too and it looks great!
Olivia Grace yay! I’m so glad you were able to make this project and to personalize it with your own unique style!
Thanks this was great! It was my first time doing it and I finished it in about 2.5 hours (including food break). It turned out beautifully and i love it!
Justine Nicole yay! So happy to hear your project turned out well!
Thank you so much for your tutorial. I use to macrame in the 70's but I forgot everything I learned! So I appreciate you taking your time to teach us. You're the best one I have found!
Thank you for the lovely compliment. I am glad you enjoyed the tutorial and that you are getting back into macrame!
Thank you so much for such a easy, thorough & easy to follow tutorial!!! I love my plant hanger!! 🌱
Bre R. Yay! Glad you liked it and that you made a planter!
This is such a well-done tutorial! Simple, clear, and the best part is having the instructions in the description too. I've made multiple plant hangers using this, and referring back to the description for measurements has been very helpful.
Thank you! I’m glad this tutorial has been helpful!
Great tutorial, but I wouldn’t recommend doing this if you’re high!
😆 that should be the best time lol love your comment
Probably good advice and why I have 47 unfinished projects
Good looking out!

Adorei o tutorial. Farei hoje!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Sou brasileira 🇧🇷 😘
Thanks Rachel! I've just completed my first plant hanger and am working on a second. I used a wood limb from my back yard to hang it from instead of a hook and am going to hang 2 more from the limb at different lengths and then hang the limb. This is my first macrame project and I'm hooked thanks to you!
Gayle York Love it! I have a similar set up in my kitchen window with several planters hanging from a piece of driftwood. Soon your house will be filled with planters! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Finely one video that gives a clear understanding of the actual length of the cords
Thank you for the clear information great video.

I'm so excited to get more into macrame :)
You’re welcome! Glad you are enjoying this craft!
Just finished my first plant holder and I think the basics are correct. Room for improvement but I’m still happy with it. I have been a quilter and cross stitcher for a long time so this new hobby will be so much fun! Thank you, Rachel! You’re a great teacher.

Absolutely brilliant tutorial! I can’t believe I made this in one night. Thanks for your guidance and inspiration. My first macrame project complete 💚
Yay! So glad you made a plant hanger! And that you liked my video!
Tim's wife here. My first macrame hanger was done in grade school back in the late 70's. I've been wanting to make one for about 20 years now. Thanks to this great tutorial...I CAN!!! Awesome job!!

This is the beat tutorial! I just ordered my first macrame cord and ring today and can’t wait to get started!
Yay! Let me know how it turns out!
I learnt to make macrame back in 2016 when I was overseas... hehe fond memories
How sweet! The American version of my 4th grade school craft project. I grew up in Mexico and I can only give credit to our indigenous population for such wonderful, simple yet beautiful hand-woven creations. I really appreciate the substitution of the original yute or ixtle (yucca fibers) with macrame. My little girl's fingers were sored after weaving the ixtle but it was a lot of fun and my mother loved the plant hanger :) Peace to you all!
Yay! Glad you enjoyed making a plant hanger!
So very clear! I had forgotten. I used to macramé like crazy in the 70’s. My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Ferguson, whom I adored, taught us. I made belts and plant hangers and wall hangings galore. Thank you so much for inspiring me back in!!!
D R Glad you enjoyed the video and that you have rediscovered your love for macrame!
How can anyone “dislike” this video???
Love it thanks for the tutorial!!!
Thank you! And you're welcome!
There will always be haters
Because she speaks too slow and it's painful to watch something that could be done so much faster?
I've become obsessed with house plants, so naturally I want to learn how to make some of my own pretty plant hangers. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! I can't wait until my macrame cord arrives lol.
Your welcome! The design possibilities are endless once you get the hang of it! Let me know how your first one turns out!

What are the string measurements? Thanks.
@@anamv100 oh, that would be nice to know 😂

You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love it - this will make a perfect housewarming gift for my friend
Hi! Your how-to was the 5th and BEST I've watched! The others left me feeling lost or they were just plain 2 sets of knots. From your tutorial I feel confident! You explained so well! You didn't speed through but didn't go so slow I wanted to fast forward. I don't usually leave comments but I wanted to say thank you! And keep up the great work! I am subscribed!!! Oh, and it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thank you! So glad you found my channel! Thank you for leaving a comment!
I've made 3 or 4 of these so far, so easy and simple, and they look great! Thank you for the tutorial
Yay! You’re welcome!
Thanks Rachel. I used this video pattern as a primer to refresh my memory from back in the 70's when I used to do macrame. I added some wooden beads here and there. This brings back some fun memories for me. Thanks again.
You’re welcome! Glad you are getting back into macrame!
Really good tutorial, I knew the square knot prior to watching but it was very well explained. Metric measurements are approx 3.7m per length, found there was a bit of excess with that which I'm sure someone would be able to tweak if they had more skills/understanding than the beginner that I am!! Thanks
That was such a clear explanation of what i thought was going to be so tricky thank you 💟
Zoey Brocklehurst thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@RachelColton, Do you have tutorials for beginners who have no knowledge of this technique?

It is that easy! I did it in one evening :)
This is an EXCELLENT tutorial video. Very informative, thorough, and easy to follow! Thank you for sharing your skills!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
This is exactly what I was looking for. I have a huge plant I want to hang and it's not going to fit in the average-sized hanger. The way you showed this, I can easily see how to adapt it to a larger plant. Such a beautiful yet simple design. I am off to Hobby Lobby now! Thank you.
Thank you so much for this amazing instruction!!! You made it very simple and explained everything very well while showing everything you are doing (I'm mostly a visual learner). I am excited to make one of these for my plants. My husband says I am turning into a old women because I want to make macrame 😂 I love learning new things and thanks to people like you I can :)
You’re welcome! I just asked my husband if I’m an old woman because I was trying my hand at embroidery! He said I have an old soul 😂.
The only thing I'm confused about is the length of each strand? I heard 4yards and ten inches. Is that the total of string used, cut into equal strands?
How long is each strand when cut to start?
Each string needs to be about 4 yards.
@@RachelColton thanks 😊
formidable, cherie! Vas-y!
Cigarlita Choncha thank you!
Thank you for your easy-to-follow video. I love the twisting knot. We also included your video in our round-up of macrame plant hangers - so thanks!

I am from India ....very well explained anyone can do so easily I made this and it's so beautiful thanks for sharing ❤️😊
You’re welcome 😊!
I just made this! It was my first ever time making anything macramé. I adjusted some of the measurements because I have a very small pot and took some creative license with the number of knots and such but overall I'm so happy about how it turned out! Thank you for this video!😃
You’re welcome!
Thank you!! I've never done macrame but wanted to learn, this was so helpful and easy to follow. I love my new plant hanger!!
You’re welcome! Welcome to the wonderful world of macrame! Be sure to try some other projects as well!
I made these in the 70's a lot and was looking into making a few now and needed a bit of a refresher. Thank you.
You’re welcome!
You should also try embroidery if you don’t already!
Anyone else who's done this on nylon strings back in early 2000s to make bracelets or anklets?
Nulla yaaaaaaas!
We did ours with a weird stretchy plastic string and I would get blisters from wearing them in the summer so I started using embroidery thread and now I'll try the nylon thread bc it looks like its be pretty without causing blisters
Yes, laniard. Back in the 80s! ;D
Thank you so much for this tutorial! You explained it so well. I've recently gotten into keeping houseplants and bought a few macrame hangers, but now I'm going to make my own and your tutorial has given me the confidence I need. Thank you so much! ❤️
Yay! You’re welcome! So glad you are enjoying this craft! You can play around with different patterns and colors! It’s so fun!
Great job!!! I like so much hanging plant, and now I hold small exhibition of 'plant fly ~'
This looks so easy and beautiful! Thank you for your tutorial 🥰
Jahanara Parvin you’re welcome!
Thank you for sharing this, I'm going to try it out today. How tall is the end product from the ring to the pot base?
Ivy Clark from the top of the ring to the bottom of the pot it is about 19.5 inches. Enjoy your project!
I replicated this with 35 metres of twine (38yards) ... its incredible. 👍👍👍
Yay! So glad you love the finished product!
I had a girls night last night and we all made this hanger! I love how it turned out but when I got to the end I had two verrrrrrrry short ropes and 2 very long ropes in each group. I followed the wing span advice... did I do something wrong? Just start with longer rope next time? Or do you somehow switch on and off with your long & short rope?! I'm new at macrame!
Erika G that sounds so fun! You didn’t do anything wrong. The working strings get used up faster than the filler strings. For certain projects you can use shorter filler strings and longer working strings but it can get complicated with a project like this. You can switch the inner and outer strings and leave a little space to create a cool design. Or just use your scraps for a smaller project like a keychain or earrings!
@lippymoocow same here too
Awesome! I used to love making these years ago. Forgot how to do them. Was so happy to find this video. Will make some for my patio! Thank you.❣️❣️
Thank you! Glad the video was helpful!
I followed this tutorial for my first project and now I am hooked on macrame ❤️
Easy to follow, the measurements are accurate.
Thank you so much!
Yay! You’re welcome! Glad you are enjoying macrame!
Great tutorial! However, when doing the square knots in the beginning, the pieces on the outer sides that we are overlapping to create the knot end up way shorter than the inner strands. How can I avoid that from happening? Thanks!!
amy Cafouras the outer working strings will get used up faster than the inner filler strings. You can make your filler strings shorter to begin with or you can swap the inner and outer strings at some point in your design.
This was another great way of resolving the issue! ua-cam.com/video/fA0suh9nMZE/v-deo.html

SQUARE KNOT AND SPIRAL STITCH TUTORIAL ♥️ ua-cam.com/video/xpd3Fb_jC7A/v-deo.html
could you tell me why I keep getting short string on the sides while the middle stay long
Christopher Frederick yes! The middle (filler) strings aren’t used for much so they remain long. The outer (working) strings get used up making all the knots. If you are afraid you might run out of string, you can swap the inner and outer strings at some point in your design. If you make loose knots at the switch point it actually makes a cool design. Depending on the project you can make the filler strings shorter to begin with or just use the cut offs for smaller projects. I hope that helps!
Thank you for such a simple and easy to follow tutorial. I am so excited to try this!
You’re welcome! Some viewers have had issues with their string being too short so go a little longer on the measurements!
Thank you Rachel for such an easy & details on how to do & the materials I feel I can accomplish it as a new beginner, just need to shop for strand & wooden holder.
You’re welcome!
The ring on that hook really looks like a surprised person with a long nose and a mohawk.
lol, true
Could you kindly link where you get your cord. It looks lovely to work with
Gerry Montgomery www.knotandrope.com. Here I am using the 3mm single strand cotton rope.
Did I understand correctly that the length of your ropes to begin with reached from fingertips to fingertips times two and a half?
This looks fun and I’m needing some hanging planters and can’t find any right now, but I actually have plenty of pots so I should totally try my hand at this!
Yes. Some viewers had issues with theirs being two short so you may want to do three times.
Thank you so much! This was really easy to follow and I made my first macrame hanging pot holder! Can't wait to make more!
You’re welcome! ☺️
You sound like Pam Beasley! I love the tutorial too, thank you!
Catherine Thoms you’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
cuanto mide cada hebra? puede ser en español el videeo? subtituladdo?
Rachel Colton
I used about 4.3 meters per string (8 strings total). Plus you need about 0.6 meters for each gathering knot. I used about 35.6 meters total for the entire project. Some viewers had issues with their project being too short so you may want to go longer. I hope that helps.
I have a qst ... what is the length of the cords ?
2 1/2 arm lengths. Stretch your arms out & a full arm length is finger tip to finger tip. 1/2 arm length is middle of chest to finger tip. Hope this helps. :)
Danielle Coulson thanks it really helps!
I'm sorry, how does that help? We're all different heights! I hate to waste. I need a measurement
