How to Repair and take apart a broken Drive or Golden mobility scooter Transaxle

- Drive and Golden over the years have used the same style of transaxles. This video I attempt to take apart and see why this transaxle failed and what can be done to try and fix it. Like Pride mobility transaxles, Drive or Golden do not sell any of the internal working for the transaxles so any parts would have to be sourced from the used market.

I appreciate your transaxle repair videos, Ian. They gave me the confidence to repair a GoGo transaxle. Fortunately it only needed new bearings available on eBay.
Glad they help out. Good luck with the bearing change.
Very interesting video. I was very surprised to see that there was no oil bath, in the transaxle, unlike the automobile. I was a mechanic, 50 yrs ago, so I fully expected there to be 90 weight gear oil, when you opened the hatch! I am wondering if doing so would be a bad thing, frankly. Seems to me, that would help the longevity. [As an aside, am wondering if wheel bearings are, indeed, available. I've checked every source i know, including eBay, put in multiple search terms in the search engine, and came up dry each and every time.]
I am wondering if they used gear oil in transaxles with electric motors would require more expensive seals and more maintenance. Since most of these scooters are low speed and meant for flat surfaces unlike a car diff which has to cope with higher stresses, no maintenance grease must have been the best solution for this type of drive train.
None of the manufactures sell wheel bearings only the whole wheel assembly. There may be some aftermarket bearing supplier somewhere.
I'm a girl that's pretty handy with tools. fixing to check Mom's scooter.
do I have to take the part off you're looking at to see if it needs Grease? if there are no grease leaks do I assume it's just fine ? I may have another question... but not yet.
All depending on how old the scooter is but if you can't see any leaking, still getting good drive range and no grinding noises you should be ok. Keep the questions coming! 👍
is wheel bearing grease ok for gears in an older shoprider te778 three wheeler?
best to teardown or just add via grease nipple, probably never been done before.
If the transaxle is leaking grease through any of the seals then its either really old worn out grease or the seals have failed. The way I have done it in the past is to remove all the old grease and used a multi purpose grease that's not going to breakdown to quickly under use. Try something that lawn tractors use or better still, I've heard people have great results with lithium grease.
@@lasvegasscooterslifts thanks for that advice taken
Hi my mercury prism battery are new but drin with in 5 minutes then swinch off can your help thanks
Hi Will, even though your batteries may be new the first thing you need to do is get them load tested. Just putting a multimeter on them to check voltage won't give you any information about the status or health of the batteries. If they check out ok, then I would look at the following:
Make sure the charger is the right size and is working correctly.
Check or any leaking, damage or play in transaxle.
Check to see if the motor getting hot after about 20 minutes of driving?
Best tip is, take it to a good repair center and get them to check it out for you.
@@lasvegasscooterslifts the transaxel is growling a bit can I change one of the brearings in it.i have aready takeing it off Thanks
If a bearing is the problem and you can find a replacement, then I don't see why not. I would remove the motor from the transaxle and power it up (frw/rev) to see if it's the motor bearings making the noise rather than diving into the transaxle first.
How often should lead acid batteries be charged on a unit not being used?
Hey Rob, best thing to do is if it's a removeable battery pack take the pack off the scooter when not in use to prevent any unnecessary draw from the scooter. Check every three weeks or so. Batteries discharge at approximately of 5% per day = 20 days. If it's a larger scooter, then taking the batteries out is a little more difficult. Take the scooter out for a short trip full speed when pulling away and see how far the LED lights or power needle goes down if it stays full green no need to charge but check the next week. if the power indicator goes down significantly then charge the batteries.
Hi my transaxle has gone the same on my monarch 6 is there any other transaxle that is the same mine is a 8 mph thanks any advice would be great let’s 4 years old loved your video
Glad you enjoyed the video both of you. If my research is correct the Monarch 6 locks like the Golden Companion series here in the US. The GC440 www.monsterscooterparts.com/brands/golden/models/companion-ii-gc440gc440c looks similar to what I've found doing a little searching but the GC440 as far as I'm aware is only 5mph (that would be governed by the controller) whether the transaxles are the same I would have to see what you have in your scooter.
Parts is pain in the ass. Sometimes appears that chinese work better because they put all parts in alliexpress. Here they propose the complete motor train... :(
Hi and thanks for the comment! yes replacement parts are a pain for the home DIY repairer. I checked AliExpress and the best I could find was an S-Drive D51270 SC40E SC44E Controller. I couldn't see any new internal workings for transaxles or whole transaxles either. So as a dealer it looks like my only supply is from Pride Mobility, Golden, Drive and many other manufactures for parts and they only supply either the motor and brake assembly or motor/transaxle and bake assembly not internal workings such as gaskets, gears, shafts etc. etc. So, yes, we have to say that a replacement motor train is your only option of which I always advise my customers not to do due to cost but that's their choice.
Thanks for your videos. Very informative. I also have a golden scooter GB116 With a transaxle/rear end tick. The transaxle looks identical to the one you tore apart in this video. So while driving only in forward. There is a tick/squeak about 50 times for every single tire rotation. The squeak sounds more like a tennis shoe squeak on a gymnasium floor. I've oiled and greased things up with no effect. I have also heard you make comments in other videos about the wheels keyway getting loose and causing ticking. It does not matter the type of surface I am driving on. Carpeted or hard surface it still makes the same noise but only going forward. In reverse it is almost silent. Maybe one or two squeaks per 10 to 20 ft of driving in reverse. When I switch and start to drive forward again. The scooter is silent until I have driven about 3 ft forward. Then the ticking returns full time. I have thought about rotating the rear wheels and checking out the key way. This would technically change the rotation of the tires and see if the ticking stops. Any suggestions you might have would be highly appreciative. Thanks.
Hi Tina, the older GB116 and also the earlier Companions had chrome style wheel covers that sometimes made an enjoying creaking, ticking sound as the tires/wheels got older. One thing you can try is lift the back of the scooter off the ground if you can, with the wheels floating off the ground run the scooter (be careful) see if the squeaking still continues. You can also try it on the front wheel to. Spin the wheel both directions to see If it still squeaks, tick. It could be a number of things, like internal bearing, broken drive motor shaft to the transaxle. This is not a definitive test but might help you track down the source of the noise.
Just want to say Your videos have helped me out no end of times ,
I have a question for you ,
I have a Breeze 4 and was wondering is there a speed limiter fitted to the gearbox???
Hi Paul, glad they are so helpful. I don't do much work with this style of scooter but have repaired them in the past though. If their make-up is similar to the E-Wheels style scooters there are no speed restrictors or governors in the gearbox/transaxles, they just transfer power from the motor to the wheels. Most scooters use the preprogrammed controllers to govern the speeds via the speed and throttle pots and are set to 100%. I suppose in theory you could engineer some kind gearbox with different gearing ratios like a car but that would probably be expensive.
Nice one Ian, that's one of those jobs you do only if you've got the spares. It surprises me how that grease gets every where.
Hope you and Jenny are good, be lucky.
Hey Clive, it gets everywhere because I get it everywhere lol. I once painted my parents' conservatory and got paint everywhere, even that cat 🤣
