  • I was in Utah visiting family and happened to still have all my California Dive gear in the car so I figured I would go for a dive. Utah regulations for spearfishing are super easy with a list of reservoirs that allow spearfishing. Some reservoirs have different regulations so make sure you look. It is also really nice to be able to shoot gamefish in the state of Utah. Because I was staying in the Salt Lake region of Utah and I had found a little information online about spearfishing in Utah, I decided to dive Deer Creek Reservoir. The water had 10 - 15ft of visibility and I saw plenty of smallmouth bass and walleye. Walleye was the only fish that was in open season during this time. I found the majority of the fish on the southern side of the island in the rocky underwater structure but also managed to shoot my biggest walleye on the north side of the island. This reservoir is heavily trafficked so it is important to have a dive float (or a kayak in my case) and to keep and eye out for boaters. Hopefully, this video will help others get into freshwater spearfishing in Utah and streamline the research that I had to do myself.

Saw your ND shirt. Have you spearfished in either of the Dakotas? We're in MN and can only take rough fish here. We do trips to Manitoba for walleye, but not last or this summer. We're tossing around going west and doing some swim hunting for game fish. Fun vid.

Not yet. Haven't really made it to the Dakotas yet. If I do I'll bring spearfishing gear I guess!

Please use a dive Flag, its the Law, Not using one sets you up for a ticket and to get run over, It also makes all spearos look bad when we dont follow the rules.
Nice footage, if you get out here much please look for fun events we do all summer at, www.rockymountainspearfishing.org
Aug 28-29 is USA Freshwater Nationals, Lake Mcconaughy, Nebraska

Awesome video! What day of the week and time of day was this? I've hit this exact spot a few times before on the weekend (including today) and never hit the decent viz like this. I'm hoping I might have better luck if I go on a weekday or super early on a weekend day before the boats have churned up all the silt.

I think I hit the water at 8am on a thursday for this dive. The boat traffic on the reservoir on this day was pretty minimal and never really affected the vis.

Wanting to get into spear fishing. Had some questions about gear and stuff. What gun and what cm are you shooting? And don’t know what wetsuit mm to go with. Was thinking 5mm for here in Utah; Any input on wetsuits and overall gear I would need? TIA

The gun I'm using in this video is an 80cm Mako speargun. I'd say thats a pretty good starting gun for shooting fish in most freshwater places. Visibility usually isn't great so shorter guns are good. I do know some people that shoot larger guns though. In this dive I was using my 7mm wetsuit and was very comfortable. I havent dove in utah a whole bunch though. I know people use 5mm. My recommendation would be to join the "Utah Spearos" facebook group and ask those guys more questions. Hope this helps.

So sic! How cold is the water typically say from may to sept? Will my 3:2 mm wetsuit work? Have you seen anyone using Hawaiian sling? Will my regular yearly fishing license work? Thanks so much! awesome video

Water is chilly. I'd say 70 degrees is the lowest I dive in a 3mm and I think its colder than that for a good bit of that time. A 5mm would probably work the whole time though. When I dove it all I had was my 7mm. I've never seen someone else dive the reservoir at the same time I was there, but I'm sure a hawaiian sling could work. And yeah all you need is your normal fishing license. Utah has designated reservoirs for spearfishing so check the regs.
