They only thing I would like to see in this video is it towing because that’s what most people are going to do with it! Though I would qualify your statement of "most people are going to do (towing)" with "that plan on using it as an adventure vehicle." So when you factor in the historical usage of most SUVs and pickups (at least in the US), people looking to tow will be a very small percentage of Rivian owners.
@@MilesToGo78 The other model R1S is a Range Rover like SUV. We in Europe do like those, even if we don't have much time for pickup trucks. If we wish to move anything we temporarily hitch a trailer to the back of the car.

I grew up in Wisconsin and my father was friends with the Harley. As a 45 year rider, I'm Not a big fan of Harley as a company and culture. Its load oil dripping, knuckle-dragging attitude is, well embarising. I got to say Well done Harley. You deserve a win in the market place for seeing that EV bikes are the future. Second for sticking with it over the last 5 years and not giving up. The third kudos to your tireless engineers for their commitment to the project and this adventure. Fourth for having the smarts to have women on the team. Last is knowing a great opportunity and having the guts to commit and make it work. This is a moon shot of a project and will do more for EV's future than people give it credit for.

Nothing special about that at all. There's a entire documentary someone driving from Alaska to the South tip of South America in a Electric Vehicle driving on nothing but pure sunshine and he's only on UA-cam. Rivian is doing it for advertising not for the pure documentary reason.
Hat's off to you guys at Rivian for stepping up and getting these vehicles on this trip. Unbelievable to put prototype videos out there for such a long and uncertain journey knowing that the cameras will be rolling the whole time. Great job!!

That is one new technology, a Solar Panel charging system that can charge an EV car :D , you need 5 acres of solar panel that you have to haul around :D

The Rivian's battery is only 180kWh. 5 acres is also 60 megawatts peak output, so unless you want to simultaneously charge 374 rivians all at once (their max charge rate is 160kw), perhaps 5 acres is a tad more than you need to haul around? measure The Average American driver does 37 miles per day, so if you parked outside all the time, the good old sun itself is paying for 81% of your fuel. If you want to go further for free, add a fold-out solar awning or two, and you get infinite off-grid travel.
@@chrisdrake4692 the average portable solar panel is only rated at 200W, so you'd need a thousand hours (~20 weeks) to recharge the Rivian battery. Or to flip it, to charge the Rivian battery 1% you're looking at a whole day's charge. How many panels were you planning to carry?
I drive a Tesla (got it when there wasn’t any other options out there) and really love the vehicle, but the Rivian is without a doubt my next love. First time seeing one is in the long way up. Really ballsy and putting your money where your mouth is to supply vehicles still in R/D on an expedition of that scale and also to be put on a global, public spotlight that could show the wins and the losses. What I took away from it is what better way to create a killer production vehicle than to have an absolute goldmine of real world testing and data
I can't wait for this show and for these vehicles. If the Long Way Up doesn't actually showcase the Rivian products that much I hope to G you all are filming for your own documentary purposes!

What do you mean "we built out a charging network"? You mean Rivian installed all these chargers? Or you found charging locations from other companies?
The did it for the show. They actually did what it says here. They build them across the “Long way up” route, to charge the two motorcycles and these two trucks.
Ok, Rivian haven't produced a vehicle for retail sale yet, but I really believe them to be the genuine article. The rubber stamp will be when the R1S and R1T go on sale next year, but the Long Way Up series can only be excellent publicity for the company in the meantime.

Did someone say Baja? At times I have problems with gas and diesel. Electric is there but might be problematic where I have been traveling. Either way, I can’t wait.
this is THE deciding factor for Rivian i think. if you truly can not do REAL road trips and will be limited to the built in battery distance then the rivian brand will fall flat on its face in comparison to tesla. early press quotes said they were not so much focused on charging but focused on range... i think that may be a massive mistake if they bring this awesome looking vehicle to market (which on paper is much more attractive than the cybertruck atm) with the same mentality.

So you can charge the Rivian, just like any other EV out there, even Tesla with an adapter, at tens of thousands L2 chargers already out there in addition to ones that will be built between now and when Rivian launches their production vehicles next June (2021). Rivian is planning (and from my readings Rivian already started) to build "additional" CCS charging stations at the popular but off the beaten path locations where no chargers exist today. Moreover, the amount of people that will "actually" go adventuring with a Rivian will be a subset of the people who will buy a Rivian. So I highly doubt Rivian will "fall flat on its face" when you consider the more likely purchasers of their EAVs.
MrDamonLeBeouf I respectfully disagree. They just need to fill in a few adventure spots and focus on making great vehicles. Tesla had no choice but to also invest in a charging network. Hogging that has slowed the overall adoption. If they used the CCS standard and made it available to non Tesla cars overall adoption of EVs would increase. They want OEMs to share in the expense, but realistically they are bettor passing that cost to the end consumer. They could charge ridiculous rates for non-Tesla/non-OEM partners. They could recoup their expenses for the network much faster that way.
Now that I've realized that two tent configuration should be possible thanks to the rack beams that can be installed on both the roof and the back, I'm all in! Make it less than 100k USD in Europe with the full configuration (biggest battery, camper's kitchen, 2 rack pairs, 2 tents), and I'll sell my Tesla MS to buy a Rivian R1T right away!

JoeMama27 yeah unfortunately Tesla sued Rivian for poaching talent which isn’t true. It’s unfortunate bc Rivian and the CEO see Tesla as an ally for fighting towards sustainable energy. Tesla highly likely won’t win bc Rivian makes new hires sign document saying they are prohibited from bringing any IP from past companies.
“Long way to go” is a good motto for this company as they learn how large the mountain of scale production is. It’s easy to make a prototype, it’s immensely hard to make cars at scale.

I've always thought pickup trucks make no sense but I love this truck; frunk, gear tunnel and efficiency these are game changers.
I have a R1T reservation.. love the gear tunnel and quad motors. Frunk is huge. But now may like the Hummer Frunk better.

I think this truck will do well in my ghetto neighborhood of Hayward California where the streets are rough with potholes and uneven surfaces.

Rivian R1S SUV is my dream to own. I can't afford it. Solar should be available as an add-on. Imagine if Rivian gave away a R1S to one lucky person, how happy would that person be? ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

JoeMama27 yeah unfortunately Tesla sued Rivian for poaching talent which isn’t true. It’s unfortunate bc Rivian and the CEO see Tesla as an ally for fighting towards sustainable energy. Tesla highly likely won’t win bc Rivian makes new hires sign document saying they are prohibited from bringing any IP from past companies.

“Long way to go” is a good motto for this company as they learn how large the mountain of scale production is. It’s easy to make a prototype, it’s immensely hard to make cars at scale.
Look very excitedly to see what happens with Rivian... But your telling us you didn't have any ICE support vehicles with large ICE generators to charge the trucks and bikes?
