@@DaveSimonH Irony for me is that all the people I've seen complain about the game, are the ones who've played it and disliked it and denouncing it as a glorified 'walking simulator'. 19:18 the animation of the star-formed grass waving in the wind at the bottom is smooth at native 4K and with CAS but jumps pretty heavily with DLSS. Could that be an artifact of the reconstruction technique, Alex?
Huh, this was a pretty long but very nice video. Didn't even realize that it was almost half an hour until you mentioned its length and I took a surprised look at the runtime :D. One thing I wish you touched on though is DLSS at a lower resolution. Many people still have 1080p or 1440p monitors running off of more wallet-friendly cards like the 2060 and could still benefit from higher framerates. But running an internal resolution of 720p or 1080p with DLSS upscaling to 1080p or 1440p respectively gives DLSS less detail to work with, so it would've been interesting to see if the "Definitely use DLSS because it looks better than even native resolution" recommendation still stands at these lower resolutions. It would've added a few more minutes to the video and more work for you but I think it would be interesting to some people. But maybe you go into that in your upcoming checkerboard vs DLSS video so I'll sit tight for that one. Either way, it's a great video and I really appreciate how in-depth you guys go. Keep it up Alex
Don't you worry, the new 3000 series will have better DLSS and better raytracing. I'm ok with my 1080Ti. There are so few DLSS 2.0 games. As I expected, the new technology will really be used with the next generation of graphic cards.
I beat DS on PS4 back last fall when it came out. I still think about it from time to time. I cant really say that about most games I've played this year. My wife who watched me play it through told me only Breath of the Wild was better to watch me play through, and this was pretty close.
Well, that was with DLSS (1.0). DLSS 2.0 stepped up the game noticeably and got positive reactions from Day 1 basically. And while I would usually prefer native besides some exceptions, DLSS (2.0) is honestly awesome tech, if you can use it. But not only that you need an Nvidia card for that, just few games have support for that and it needs to be implemented; it's not sth. general, that's the downside with that method.

Man high FPS is everything. It’s even more important than resolution. 60 FPS should be the lowest standard frame rate for next gen consoles and developers should consider this too. Think about it. You can’t clearly appreciate the graphics when the game is not running as smooth as 60 FPS!!!
Thanks for your very informative videos. To me, they are the best source to get in-depth technical review of games with pristine graphics. I like that you analyze lower settings too (e.g. DLSS 720p to 1080p in Control was very impressive).
Meanwhile, on the toaster side (an i5-4460 and a GTX 960), I'm happy when I can reach constant 30fps on low settings everywhere in 1080. And cutscenes are often running below 15 fps. I believe the main problem I have is low VRAM (only 2GB). I would love if a mod like the one that got out for Nier Automata also gets out for Death Stranding. Because in Automata, a big problem was the Global Illumination that took a lot of processing power, and the mod allowed to reduce the quality of it, allowing me to be able to reach console-like performance.
I have been trying to tell people that DLSS 2.0 is one the greatest advancements in PC gaming ever. That technology is really crazy. Better looking and it runs much better thats just insane. That is where I think these next gen consoles will flounder. You can now buy an rtx 2060 and in a game that supports DLSS which pretty much all major ones will be going forward it will perform the same if not better than the next gen consoles. Just imagine even a 3060 which will be put within half a year of next gen consoles. It will absolutely destroy them with pretty much 2080 ti levels of performance in a $300ish card with DLSS on. A 3080ti with DLSS will literatly probably be x2 the performance of next gen consoles or more with DLSS.
My 2060 is becoming an even more amazing investment by the day. I could probably do 8K 30 fps with DLSS 2.0 in this game using DSR and a custom resolution, just to see if it works. Big oof for AMD and the people who said DLSS was never gonna work at 19:19
Same. My 2060 will outlive the competition if more games implement DLSS 2.0. Much more so if the rumored upcoming DLSS 3.0 allows the option to be enabled on all games.
@@JoshhTW Im questioning that. Unless the 30 series cards have a lot more tensor cores than rumored. The reason its not enabled on all games, is there is a lot of pre-calculations done. Which requires you go through nvidia to get done. The amount of tensor cores on these things is enough to scale the image up WITH the pre-calculations. But to do them without requires a lot more than is reasonable to put on GPUs rn. Don't expect support to be given to all games until we have TPUs.
The graphical options to tweak is extremely sparse..I expected way more after MGS5. There are only 1080p or 720p graphical options..can't even choose 900p which sucks.
Just got this on PC and playing in 4k 🤩 it looks amazing and runs smoothly! Really impressed on this port compared to other games the past couple years.
As PC is my primary platform for gaming I have a dirty little secret... I purchased the PS4 version at launch and used LG's "TruMotion"(Increases framerate and adds fake frames in between frames) and slowed down the camera rotation speed in game and it was STUNNING how well it mimicked 60fps. This only looks good on slow paced games such as Death Standing and you MUST slow down camera rotation speed or it will get very choppy. I also used it for God of War which yielded reasonable results.
Yes! In a recent interview with Geoff Keighley, Kojima bragged about his close relationship with Valve and discussed HL Alyx... Hopefully that translates into official DS VR support!
It's remarkable how reconstruction the image at a lower resolution is offering better visuals than a native resolution at much higher resolution, it's becoming more clear that DLSS 2.0 is becoming the killer feature to have and AMD needs it's own version for RDNA 2 gpu's, otherwise it would be a hard sell for many when Nvidia hardware can use a much more modest gpu and get better visuals and performance by using DLSS 2.0, it will also be interesting what the next gen consoles will have for reconstructing of the image. If AMD's RDNA 2 gpu's on the PC or the next gen consoles don't have something like DLSS 2.0, that could be a costly mistake.

Somanithel Kheang Death Stranding’s world is empty by design (I can accept you not liking it) but saying botw (which you can like or not as a game) is an empty open world is absolutely false. Botw’s open world is filled to the brim with secrets and things to discover, it’s just that the game doesn’t directly tell you where to go, instead you have to interpret the game’s cryptic hints.

Even though it may have been expensive at launch, it pays for itself by giving me high frames and some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Looking forward to the 3000 series. ;)
We're in the age of graphical prowess when we can literally split hairs for analysis. Think about that for a moment.
isn't the whole point that the hair shouldn't be split tho?
"A toaster"? "A potato"? That's it, Alex, your Master Race license is suspended for two weeks!
I was very much anticipating this game's release on PC. I hadn't realized that today was release day until I saw this video title. I started this video, watched maybe a couple minutes. Paused, went and bought the game. I'm super stoked to try this on my newish computer. Ryzen 7 3800X, 16gb 3000hz ram, RTX 2060 FE, 256gb m.2. I'll get flack for listing my specs. I did this so I can come back and update my comment with how it is running on my PC. :) Metrics! Also, thanks for another informative video DF!
Love the digital foundry community and creators. Hope you hit a million subs this year.

DLSS plus Ray Tracing are the future of gaming; funny how most people berated Nvidia almost 2 years ago when they launched Turing and Jensen say pretty much the same, and now just see AMD scrambling to feature-matching what Nvidia has had for years.
makes sense that they would implement it now that it's beginning to actually be useful.
well RTX is unavoidable... those GTX.. they won't be around long..
My body is ready! Im so excited for this tech review.
If anyone want the music from the beggining, it's "Stepping Stones" by Ludvig Forssell in the Death Stranding album.
And the one in the end is "Once, There Was an explosion" in the same album 😎
These types of vids are why I support you on parteon - many thanks!
Dear heavens. How I wish we could get Bloodborne on PC. Even if just for 60 fps gameplay in high resolution.
How many PS4 exclusives came to PC?
@@karl343 Journey, Death Stranding, the Quantic Dreams PS trilogy (Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Detroit: Become Human), and Horizon: Zero Dawn.
@@samuelchurch5124 Nioh, Tetris Effect & flower were once exclusive too. There are other Sony published games too like Predator: Hunting Grounds. I only wish that Sony starts putting it's Ist party 'Exclusives' on PC after 2 yrs instead of never {To maintain the supposed value of HW via exclusivity}. If it is only a question of experiencing the game then there is PS now too i.e. if one can't afford the Hardware.
@@samuelchurch5124 and spyro
I can't wait for the Horizon review.
This was one of the most optimized games I have ever played
4:55 - 5:08 Now slow it down even more with the playback settings and you can REALLY enjoy that motion animation XD.
"this is the definite version of Death Stranding"
Well, this aged well.
Man dlss is amazing. Really hope studios are working on this for the next gen consoles, the performance gains are insane.
No way, since DLSS is hardware based and Nvidia proprietary; sucks that the new consoles are using AMD.
@@victorsegoviapalacios4710 Perhaps it may incentivise devs to optimized for FidelityFX instead, considering it's open source so even Nvidia GPUs should be able to use it.
@@victorsegoviapalacios4710 yeah not cheap... but this is why i had not buy AMD for 10 years now... they are good budget but when i spend my money.. i would like something not going to cause my pc to becoming a heater...
@@thespianmask FidelityFX is not the same as DLSS, DLSS is reconstruction, FidelityFX is just lower resolution with Smoke and Mirrors.
Man high FPS is everything. It’s even more important than resolution. 60 FPS should be the lowest standard frame rate for next gen consoles and developers should consider this too. Think about it. You can’t clearly appreciate the graphics when the game is not running as smooth as 60 FPS!!!
I hereby declare that every PC game from now on must support DLSS 2.0. Heed my words, o' video game developers all round the world!
which mean every pc masterrace had to own a nvidia since it don't exisiting in AMD....
I think people are starting to pay more attention since DLSS 2.0 came out, you really can't deny it works really well in every game that supports it
My 2060 is becoming an even more amazing investment by the day.
"I expected way more after MGS5"
You do realise that game ran on a completely different engine that was built from the ground up for PC right?
I've never clicked a notification so fast in my life
Can someone VR mod this please. Honestly- to walk around in these environments in VR would blow people away
Yes! In a recent interview with Geoff Keighley, Kojima bragged about his close relationship with Valve and discussed HL Alyx... Hopefully that translates into official DS VR support!
"Walking" is loose term here. More like tripping. They'd have to iron out the difficulties in traversal to work well in VR.
Just go into Google street view in Scotland
WeatherFox doesnt need to be first person. hellblade was ported and worked in 3rd person VR
Dr Chad ThunderCock yes- i own over 200 vr games on PS4 pro. And i follow closely the PC/Oculus side
So glad i transitioned to pc. Games like this and Tomb raider look absolutely phenomenal at 4k 60 fps
Welcome to PC gaming...enjoy!
How much did you spend?
@@tomjerry1170 I wanted a high end 4k ready rig so i spent around $2500
A heads-up: 21:9 is broken. It shows up as 3360x1440 in the menu and results in black vertical bars on the sides of screen. 32:9 users are reporting the same problem. Used a hex edit to fix it, but pretty unbelievable considering how they touted UW support.
