- We have great news on the Golf GTI oil pressure issue, fingers crossed we’ve fixed the problem. We get Paul Dove in amongst the Vauxhall Redtop engine, plus, we bake Isaac in the sun
Early 80's Ford Escort 1.6. The ones that had head gasket issues and were interference engines. Rebuilt several of them. Had one the oil pressure would drop when turning hard at low speed. Only one direction. The hydraulic lash adjusters would start clicking very slightly/randomly. Checked with manual gauge. Pressure was in fact changing. Drop pan, changed pick-up & oil pump. No joy. After some thought about oil flow in that engine...looked at camshaft. Oil was pumped into the hollow cam then out to lash adjusters. The distributor end was supposed to have a plug threaded into it. Popped distributor out to find the new cam didn't have the plug installed. Pulled a plug out of old cam and installed it. FIXED! The oil pan didn't have much of a baffle and with the excess
"leakage" at the distributor end, the pick-up was uncovering when you turned. I'd done a bunch and never run into it before.
I can’t tell you how glad I am that you are super busy, you are a nice fella…you priorities are the 3 Fs family followers and faster, may you and your business continue to prosper “you won’t know me as I deleted my main UA-cam account like a Pratt but I’ve followed you from day one stay busy be lucky and can’t wait for your next video.👍👍
I tell ya now, you would be stuffed without Isaac. He sounds like a great worker and good young bloke. Look after him because they are bloody hard to find.
Every days a school day Lee. FIngers crossed you've got to the bottom of the VW Gulfs low oil pressure problem.
Great to see your busy boys
Take care & stay safe guys
🆒️ 👍🍀
Thanks Lee, the missing or defective check valve in the oil filter housing for the Golf makes sense and on the Kit car Diff it sounds like the Pinnion bearing on the way out, check for up and down movement on the prop, there shouldn’t be any.
…..fantastic update as always Lee. Going the extra mile, in this case for the VW Golf, is what it’s all about & there will be many of your subscribers who will nod their heads at your tenacity, myself included. Plenty of work in your shop to keep you more than busy……the lads seem to be right up for the long haul 👍🏻🤘🏻
Sent the apprentice out in the heat (lol), I had to fix a tractor just on the Queensland, New South Wales border. My spanners were that hot I had to wear my mechanics gloves just to hold the spanners. I took a five litre insulated water bottle filled with ice and water, which I finished within an hour. by the way the temperature was 52 degrees Celsius in the shade.
bike engines usually work better on standard jetting with an airbox. Sock or 'pod' filters are renowned for mucking up the carburation.
There are kits to modify the carbs to compensate, they have been around for a long time. My GPz 900r runs K+N filters with kitted carbs. Most modern bikes are fuel injected and just remapped.
@@Antony_Jenner Dynojet kits being the most common, but in my experience they're s**t. Better off getting on the rollers.
Yeah, some of us learn that after trying to get those cool pod filters to work. Go back to stock airbox and don't go chopping it up and it'll run like it should. Bike CV carbs don't run open at all.
Many years ago i was a parts sales rep for a French auto manufacturer some of the engines had oil filters mounted inverted or at funny angles and at at the stores counter lots of punters would not pay the price for a genuine oil filter "cor they are half that next door" so let them go and dont argue, the difference was audible when starting from cold, NO pressure releif valve in the cheapo, let it stand for a day and a cold start meant you could hear bearings knock!! everthing was dry and how many owners cant start an engine without using there BIG throttle foot.
That was in the 80,s and i still only use the genuine item.
There is a reason for them being cheaper!
i only use ryco premium filters here in australia,do not use cheap garbage
With the Golf you will find the parts man just looks at a screen. Many years ago mechanics of my age moved into parts , basically creaking knees and worn out fingers etc. BUT they had done the job and were worth their weight in gold. They knew what parts were required and the seals , locking tabs etc would be required. We have had the same problem with TPS, Ford and Vauxhall ! We had an older guy at BMW ex workshop foreman , who would actually say " never had to replace one of those..have you looked at.... 9 times out of 10 he was correct....
There was a parts guy like that at the Chrysler dealership I used when I had an Imp back in the 70s. Knew what you wanted, what you didn't know you needed and where it all was in stores.
Used to holiday at perrenporth on liskey caravan park, Rob was an excellent manager/owner and alway had a room with a view so to speak.
Never knew they had a track down there though but i was on beach duty with wife an kids lol.
Horrible job changing those oil filter housings we ordered 3 before we got one that didn’t have a manufacturing fault/crack in the housing not a quick job either under that manifold.
Mitsubishi evo, 4G63. The first one I bored, the bores weren't at exactly 90 deg to the face and with the boring bar clamped to the face, it went off to one side. Don't know if they're all like that but it certainly wasn't the only one. Maybe only the later ones, 8 and 9?
I'm confused, the video doesn't seem to correlate with the title content. Oh I see about 10 minutes into the video. Thx.
he tends to ramble significantly, looks to be his video format for the channel
Congratulations on getting married Lee. Don't think the Lotus will be the wedding car. Hope you manage to get the track day sorted.
Funny for a home bodger mechanic to see the Haynes Manuals on the benchs.
As a saddo I realy like to follow the shop upgrades in the future .... 👍
The air filter socks will change your AFR's quite drastically, so best to get it on a dyno and have it logged with and without them and any changes made
Pinion oil seal leaking is possibly due to a blocked diff breather. Keep up the good content
That's a great piece of news regarding the VW.
Great videos Lee. Be interesting to see what you find with kit car diff.
Love this channel and its honesty.
Get the kit car to a reputable dyno and have it set up then you will know for sure its not leaning out on higher rpm
Keeping an eye in that redtop build, got future plans for an LET build, it might be winging it way to you. Keep up the great vids Lee.
Re the filter socks- I’ve had them restrict a of lot air flow on side drafts on the dyno. And even trying to suck themselves in. They are good for some things
yeah in speedway keeping the mud out LOL
Had a caddie oil filter housing apart today I think the valve they are referring to is just non-return valve specs for the oil pressure is very low on the engine all the data we could find said.6 of a bar at tickover
For TPS to have the oil valve in stock on the shelf makes you wonder if they have a common problem with them 🤔
Or someone knew that the new filter housings didn't come with them and whoever sold the housing should have mentioned this. Our business is really suffering from a lack of knowledgeable parts people with most being totally dependent on the computer listings. How helpful would it have been if the fellow/gal who took the order for the housing would have mentioned that the new part needed this valve? Quite a lot I think.
@@recoilrob324 if the person who called up and asks for the part didn’t know about the valve from the garage where the job was in bits at then a parts adviser looking at a screen of part numbers isn’t going to know either are they? Also that parts advisor isn’t a expert in every single component on every single engine vw ever made so let’s try to be reasonable and not point the finger of blame on the manufacturer and retailer.
The parts advisor sold the part the customer asked for.
@@recoilrob324 Those days have long since gone 😕 My TPS are on the ball most of the time tbh.
If you were fitting a new house on an old block replacing the oil valve wouldn't be required baring it was faulty.
The new engine didn't come with either the housing or the valve by the sounds of it & there lies the problem, you fit a new housing but don't know a valve is also required baring looking at the parts fitch....Now we back to TPS 🤔
@@derekcable imo, if a part is modified or superseded by another part, then it should include whatever else is needed to make that part work correctly...
@@celtos255 Think about it if the block still the same & the modified housing doesn't need a different valve unit then that wouldn't be the case.
Tbh this just a case neither the housing or the valve came on the block & the people who was fitting it wasn't aware it was missing due to not being familiar with this engine.
Ha, I nominated the filter housing in the comments of that video. Most commonly it’s the cap that’s missing the little end piece with the o ring on. Usually broken off allowing the oil to run straight back to the sump.
nice to see that strait six that reminds me of the jag i bought back in the 60s ery nice but i could not get insurance for it as i was too young thanks for the video on this hot day
the australian ford falcon "barra" engine is the new force in inline 6cyl now
@@andrewsmart2949 thanks for letting me know when you get old you loose track of things around stoke on trent we used to have lots of engineering places you could have a re boar or cylinder head done but i can not think of any now
Socks generally restrict the air flow and richen the mixture, was an old trick back in the day when you'd not got your jetting quite right with clamp on filters.
This man would know! A legend in the two stroke exhaust/tuning field!
I thought that you were a sensible guy Lee….but then you tell us you’re getting married…you think customers are bad…just wait 18 months and you’ll find out compared to marriage the customers cost you less, cause less grief and generally are less hassle than having a wife you can’t get rid of

True story …. Lost a lotus
Hi lee, about the vw engine, I know its useless information BUT the other day I was going to say "sounds like an oil pressure relief valve fault" but i suppose thats what most people would jump to!
Kit car, put it back to std on air filter, take it for a spin couple of miles on fast dual carriageway. Whip out spark plugs, best way to check if running lean or rich.
do you put warnings on rebuilt motors saying they must be primed before starting them ,ive worked with idiots who rev the shit out of engines when just been fit and wonder why they failed
From experience If the filter housings supersedes there should be a note on VW’s Etka system about the valve being required / not supplied
I had that happen on a Audi. The silly people bought a second hand oil housing. It was also broken. So I bought them a new one as you do. I said, where is the old one? I need the oil switches etc. Oh.....we left that at the wreckers. So new sensors too. And then that happened! The oil light would come on at idle. Now I know why.
Well happy to see my MGB get a mention 🙂
I'm seeing this video now and I'm wondering if mines had one, now I used my original oil filter housing out of my 2012 gti mk6 and I didn't remember seeing any valve.. Now could my original could have had one and it might have fell out some how, do you have any pictures of this valve in the housing, please send to me
Good video as usual. I’m told the belt kits for the early redtop ( like the one you have there ) are no longer made.
Love to follow the Vauxhall red top 20XE
build your own track there is plenty of brownfield sites available, ive a mini coopere with the same issue low oil pressure when hot, still working on that...
With the glimpses we see of the layout I am still convinced you could re-jig the unit a bit and make a clean fancy build area in house, lick spit and paint in the entire thing, job done, cheaper long run imo. You just wonna park the Lambo in a shiney unit I recon...hehehe
Hello there. I have inquestion.
Audi A5 2.0 tfsi when it s turned off it appears the message “oil pressure too low turn of the engine”
But my engine is off. How is that? Do you know?
I read a great book the other day, Issac gets a raise
Did I see a Jag old motor at about 5 mins ? Tell me more if so, E type ?
Good old Haynes Manual's 👍
Typically with the RamAir filters on 2 stroke motorbikes you would also have expansion chamber exhausts and you would go up a couple of jet sizes also. In your case they would probably need mapping with your ECU maybe. :)
I suggest you put exhaust gas temperature sensor and gauge with probes in 1 and 4 exhaust. I got mine from Pegasus pegasusautoracing Part number 1082 plus two probes 1080. Self powered so easy to do. Also recommend innovatemotorsports Wide band Oxygen Sensor and Gauge for you kit car so you know what it is doing. It is more likely that if the foam filters have been heavily oiled that it is rich rather than lean. I have no assocciation with either company but these two cheap instruments don't need a power source and are engine savers.
So a filter housing that's cheap and parts are missing. Hope you have got to the bottom of it.
You don't say what the valve is that you replaced on the Golf. If (and I do mean if, because I don't have any significant VW experience) it's a bypass valve to allow the oil to bypass the filter if the filter gets blocked I can't see that solving the idle oil pressure. I do have experience of sock type air filters and all they have ever achieved on my engines is a power loss and ruined driveability - that's on DCOEs or DHLAs. A full airbox type filter is vastly better.
I've owned about 20 redtop, never blown one up through hard driving. Probably half of them have died from oil pump failure, pressure regulating valve sticks in the pumps.
is it worth trying to adjust the mixture at the oil change? it might only need tweeking...
seems mad that 2 pieces of tape are still used to stop all that headlight glass from shattering debris, a simple circle of the wrap on your van with a marker pen cross from the scrutineer would bring it up to date
As I listen to your videos, you tend to spend just a few hours on some engines.
I am wondering whether you would recommend some kind of cleaning on an engine at, say, 100k miles. I would be willing to spend a few hundred if I could catch an issue and get another 100k miles.
@1.24… Is that a Piper Super Cub fuel tank in the background??
Do you acid dip and derust the Jaguar block internal water ways .
Having done loads of XK engines and overheating has often been down to lack of anti freeze and corrosion .
Where can we find the footage of the kit car on the track?
🤔 That apprentice clearly looks under duress when he confirms he went outside of his own choice... 🧐
😆
Is that the first we seen John I don't think I seen him before
seeing that balancer again reminded me to ask , why cant you balance v8s on it ?
FYI I know you’ve told the lighting guys your a UA-cam but check that they don’t flicker on camera. Pulse width is the issue normally from memory.
Check your Fire exits for obstructions
How about safety glasses for Isace?

do you have an oil interceptor trap on the wash down pad drainage ?
Its not the oil pump that fails ,its always that damned balance shafts
Thats my issue currently, mechanics have said balance shaft is going and they want to install a freewheel i don’t know what to do. Either freewheel and sell if its fixes problem or give to vw to fix and keep the car 😞 so lost rn
@@EEEEEEEEEEEEMan i basically cut the entire modul in half leaving with just the oil pump part when you cut it in half you are able to see two holes , first one is on the side of the cut and other is in the hole where are the housing of one of the balance shaft is before. If you weld these two holes (oil galeys ) that leaves you basically with just the perfectly working oil pump with no leakages
and with balance shafts removed .
No aditional drilling or installing custom parts and you get rid of deadweight. If you look at it its just this simple.if well maintained oil pump never fails. After mine personally fail i get angry and start reverse engineering and testing. After mine i do two others and to this day everything just work fine.
Have you tried a Colourtune tester on the carbies with and without the socks? We use the tester on aircraft engines as it shows immediately if you are rich or lean at any point of the throttle position. With the mirror and accessories that come with the glass spark plug it has solved countless problems we have had over the years by giving real time results. Gunson makes them still I believe. We use them on fuel injection too!
Great advice. In the 70s I had all the bits machined by Howley Racing at Warrington to build myself a 1400 Mini engine which I fitted to a bare shell which I then built up. The carbs were jetted using the Gunson. Still have them; Mini and Gunson. Lee's videos take me back.
Just had a look on your website. Are your prices up to date?
About a month ago you worked on a Studebaker engine was that in old Studebaker car there or is that from a Studebaker World War II truck?
Would of been worth the customer of that Rover V8 paying for top-hat liner/sleeves because if that block decides to crack behind a liner at some point (these engines are not getting any younger) then it will be a nightmare , you will also observe the head gasket fire-ring dont seal onto the standard liner top edge but on the ali deck face itself far from ideal
i just installed a new oil filter housing and i'm having this issue with low oil pressure at idle and my brother works at vw and he changed sensor and tried digging into it but we got no where can you confirm it was that valve?
Did u find the problem bro?

He died…
OK i will add a comment that will have people laughing, as anyone who has never owned one just doesnt know. Many, many years ago in my impoverished youth i took a Lada in as a part excgange for a sales car. As it didnt owe me anything i thought i would abuse it till it died. I went to the local agent for advice on what to look for, and was told theres not really anything. The only thing i was advised was motor factor branded spares are at least as good quality as original equipment, BUT, only use OE Lada oil filters. It was then explained to me there was a rubber flap in the filter that stopped back flow at an idle and it stopped you running a bearing. I used many different manufacturers parts, but kept a stock of three or four Lada oil filters. The thing ran well, and hard as me and my mates tried we couldnt kill it.
Wow hes living the dream. Oil pressure lol
Blocked filter bypass valve ?
Tell your future wife the track day is an extension of the stag do 👍😂
Start as you mean to carry on! "Track day luv you're doing the food! snap to it!" just duck the first few times!
It looks like the shop should spring for a wide brimmed Panama hat for Isaac to wear while he’s washing and prepping engine blocks and heads. He’s pretty fair skinned and should protect himself as much as possible to prevent sunburn and worse.
And where are his safety glasses? Pressure washer and no safety glasses?
@@Fastfreddyii
Safety glasses are useless while pressure washing. Debris can get under the lenses or around the side shields and into your eyes. Goggles or safety glasses in conjunction with a face shield is what’s needed.
Hi Lee,are you considering having a Patreon page for fund raising, exclusive content etc etc?
Love the channel,love your work...

Did that end up fixing it? I’m having the same issue with my mk7 right now and it didn’t fix it. This seems to be a wicked common issue and loads of people point to the filter housing and valve but no one has ever said if it fixed it. I’m about to give up at this point and just assume it’s a feature of the car now.
Did you ever figure it out bro?
@@famom9198 nope. Only step next is to buy the old filter housing from somewhere and try that. Just been rolling my foot off the brake and gently pushing the throttle to hold the rpm’s up a tiny bit at lights. Really annoying

I'd love to watch your channel more, but I do wish you'd split up the vlog stuff and make some actual technical videos. It's all just a mismash. Yo don't even put the engines shown in the description so someone could search for info. For all the content you make, it's hard to actually get anything from it.
Lee, I'm not sure if you take a step back to consider how your content 'frames' when viewed as an knowledgeable and experienced individuals who are worldly wise- Take a moment to look at the titles you apply and the suggested content of each vlog - your unplanned theme is 'stupid thinks keep happening and we're not prepared for it'.
