    Thank you very much for video. You just saved me from buying a new lawnmower. It turns out that there was a considerable amount of debris that managed to get caught up behind the carburetor housing and gunk up all the connections. A good cleaning and it seems to be working good as new. Thanks again.

    Perfect! Thanks tons! It was a bear to start so I was the only one in the family could start it. It took a lot more than 8 pulls, but I can pull all day long. I'd guess 15-20. I bought the new automatic choke and an air filter. People came to check me out when I was just tightening the last nut. I poured gasoline in it and it started on the first pull. It surprised me but I wasn't going to let on that I was surprised.

    I have a Craftsman Lawnmower with a Kohler 149cc engine. We bought it around 10 years ago from Sears and (bite my tongue) but we have never had a issue with it. It sits outside year round in our Canadian arctic and hot summer months getting snowed and rained on each year. I just change the oil at the start of every spring, check and clean the spark plug if needed. Put a new air filter on it and ( i converted the fuel filter to a external one) check the fuel filter and it is good to go for the season. The only other thing I changed was a fuel line because we had a pesty mouse that likes the taste of rubber and gas. We had to give him a burial ( thank god) because the high octane gas was to much for him. The key to making it last year after year is a little maintenance and some high quality high octane gas. I will be giving this one to my son and getting myself a self propelled lawn mower for all out unlevel yard and older age lol. I will buy another Kohler engine lawnmower again.

    I convert all these that come into my shop to a manual choke cable. I have a video on youtube that shows you how to make a bracket to hold the new choke cable out of the bracket that is already on the choke. It only takes a few minutes to modify the bracket, then all you need is a cheap choke cable. I use a Stens throttle cable part number 290-106. It's very easy to do and you never have to deal with those crappy automatic chokes again.

    You have placed the small one inch metal rod between the thermal choke control (coming from the muffler) and the control shaft on top of the carburetor in an incorrect position. It will fall off. Here is how to do it. Take the shaft out from both ends. Insert the shaft's side with the lesser bent down into the hole on the carburetor top control. Push it down. Then straighten it, bring the same end towards front of the engine, insert this end into the hole on the plastic part of shaft coming from the muffler, then place the assembly on the muffler and tighten the two ten mm bolts.

      @justinmcc488 10 місяців тому +1

      I noticed the same thing. You are correct though, the U-hook end needs to be fed through the choke shaft hole from underneath and flipped 180-degrees. Then inserted into the lever for the thermostatic choke.

    My goodness but that was worthwhile. On mine, the choke was open because - wait for it, it was so hot out that my mower, which had been sitting in the sun, thought the choke should be open. Thank you sir. I poured ice water, a lot of it, over the spring can and it closed the choke long enough for me to start it.

  • @arcvidelos8008
    @arcvidelos8008 7 років тому +2

    Great video, thanks! I got same engine, it would stall immediately after starting- the problem was with the diaphragm assembly- the spring inside somehow got skewed off center- it should be centered and seated in the small round recess inside the cover. The gaskets on both sides of the carburetor are a bit tricky to seal correctly- alternate tightening of the 10 mm nuts - thinking of rigging a better cover for carb and linkage because the one supplied is not good enough.

    I had one of those that a buddy brought to my shop. I ripped the entire auto choke system off the motor and rigged up a manual choke cable to the butterfly. Starts on the first pull to the day. However, knowing now after watching your vid, I probably would have just ordered the new spring system! Thanks double wide!

    • @doublewide6
      @doublewide6  9 років тому

      Dave Horst It is an interesting thing. I started it with it closed and watched it run and waited to see if it would open, I was figuring the only way it would open was if it was a bimetal spring.

    Thanks, I was replacing my carburetor when I came upon your video. I'd order a new carburetor offline, however, the auto choke linkage pin and the new linkage receptor on the carb didn't match up. Last thing I remember is you saying "It took me 8 pulls, but it started", I said "Well Hell, I don't mind that". So no linkage to auto choke, and still starts first pull. THANKS!

    If you suspect your auto choke is not working take the air filter cover off, and put a heat gun on the cylinder part of the auto choke behind the muffler and see if the choke opens when you apply heat for a few minutes and let it cool for 5-10 minutes to see if the throttle plate closes a little.
    CAUTION !! A propane touch would work faster , put the gas tank is very close by, plus gas in the carb bowl and other places.

    Mine was not starting well for a long time- I attributed it to use/maintenance. In a thorough cleanup though, I discovered one of the bronze pins/circlips that allow the flat slotted angle arm to slide and pivot had disappeared- fixed it, and now starts on the first pull. I would have done well to inspect the mower (and any mechanical device for missing parts at first issue) much earlier.

    The auto choke arm is hooked on wrong Dw6 if you hit a bump it will lift off it has to be on it differently
    Good luck . I can send a pic if so

    • @Pezzonovante916
      @Pezzonovante916 3 роки тому +1

      Yep. The hook must be put in from the bottom of the hole and maneuvered until the plastic rests on the back of the hook. Then, the carb must be held out away from the mower far enough that one can put the z-shaped end of the hook straight into the hole in the auto-choke linkage.

    • @treefuzz7509

      Not only that, but if it is installed wrong it in effect makes it longer and doesn’t allow the choke to fully close, hence the hard starting problem.

    I started my engine and began mowing. Then I realized this patch in my yard was throwing debris in my face so I went to get my safety glasses. When I got back my mower engine would not start. The reason is the choke opened up but the engine was still a bit cold. I removed the thermostatic choke, placed it on the stove top and turned the power on low. I watched the lever actuate to prove it operated smoothly.

    I'm having the same issue with the choke staying open after the lawn mower has sitting. The choke should obviously return to the closed position. I checked the spring by turning it and it Springs back really good so if it Springs back really good is that enough to know that it's okay or could there be something else wrong with the thermostat the heating element whatever may not be working causing the spring to not engage because it doesn't know when it's hot or cold? Or should I look into that other diaphragm looking thing to be the problem? I'm just not sure what to do I don't feel like spending 20 on a thermostat just to have the same exact problems still be happening

      I'm under the assumption that the EPA funds a sole "engineer" to work on this choke system. Otherwise, I can't fathom why they ruin such a good motor by using this and the carb float needle that corrodes itself into the passage and intermittently drains the fuel tank through the air filter box.

    • @j.kittredge
      @j.kittredge 2 роки тому

      @@tonyfremont interesting comment. Is it your opinion then that this is an otherwise good engine? The butterfly valve/choke issue see my s easier to deal with than the needle valve in the carburetor. What can be done there? Clean it out and replace repeatedly?

    My butterfly is closed and doesn't appear to have this same issue, but it still won't start. I replaced the air filter, spark plug, fuel filter, poured out old gas and replaced it with new gas with about 2 ounces of sea foam, and it now will start for about 2 seconds, then dies. If I immediately try to crank it again, it won't start. If I let it sit for about 5 mins, it will start again for about 2 seconds. I even tried pouring a little sea foam down through the butterfly (about a teaspoon). I also used carb cleaner spray through the butterfly as well. Nothing seems to help it stay running.

    I have one of these, and I know the auto choke is fine. I know this because it's brand new. But my problem is that once the mower is on (it only takes one pull), it runs WAY too fast. No amount of adjustment on the governor arm changes a thing. Am I missing something? I'd say it's running at at least 5,000rpm.

    • @macknumber9
      @macknumber9 6 років тому +1

      StaticImage try bending the tab where the governor spring anchors ...bend it so the spring decreases in length...this will put less tension on the throttle butterfly and should lower the rpms

  • @JimmyFloridatube
    @JimmyFloridatube Рік тому

    I made a hack where I took a zip tie and a small clamp to hold open the choke after I get it started. Otherwise, the choke will choke out the motor when it warms up. You can put a zip tie on the choke linkage and pull if forward to the open position and then it will keep running. It might sputter once in a while with the choke all the open, but it will keep on running and you can get your yard mowed. The automatic choke on this cheap mover was a curse. It's not worth the price of a new choke spring. assembly.

    Hi, I replaced autochoke. Tension on spring always keeps choke full closed. Engine warms up nothing happens Vac diaphragm never moves. Could diaphragm be problem. I'm thinking of going manual choke. Not worth hassle.

      yes convert it to a manual choke.. I did mine and it works better.

      Went manual too. Works great. Choke cable is a little short. I'd like a lever with notches too to better hold position.

    the problem i had was that plastic piece that is attached to the carberator and that steel rod broke..that plastic piece...now its either fully opened or fully closed the thing that opens and closes that butterfly thing..id hate to think i have to buy a whole new carberator for that small piece of plastic. i think i also disconnected that auto choke bar by accident ill look into it..teh mower itself works but you have to do the choke manually which is pretty much impossible to do and mow the lawn at the same time.

    I had an auto choke on my husky mower. I cannot stand it. Anyways it broke and now when it starts I put a stick in the lever and now no more problems. How is your son doing.?

      obadiah7771 I'm not a fan of the autochoke on any mower. My son is having some problems with his legs right now due to all the chemo he takes daily. He is having trouble walking, but I have him playing soccer on a team. It is difficult to watch, and I'm hoping I'm doing the right thing. There are tons of problems associated with his treatment and I don't think unless you have been through it you would understand. Thanks for your concern.

      Hi doublewide6! Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to reply to me! I have to say I enjoy all of your videos. They have helped me a great deal and gave me an excuse to get some new tools as well. You are 100% correct when you said I do not understand. You are right about that. My brother's wife is fighting cancer right now at the young age of 31. I remember him wanting to yell that out at some one. I let him yell it at me that I do not understand. I want to scream it at people when they look at my son with cerebral palsy as well. Honestly, I think trying to keep things as normal as you can is a great thing. Yes, it is hard to watch, but he is having fun playing sports. I will pray for your son, and for you and your wife. Take one day at a time, and remember you are helping us out here in internet land as well! Keep being and awesome dad, and a great repair man!

      The auto choke connecting rod to the carb is not connected properly in this video. It does not just drop in as you show it. Repairclinic.com has a video for replacing the 14853 49 carb the shows how it is supposed to connect to the hole in the choke rod end.

    The Briggs 6.75 also has an auto choke system. It seems to keep the choke open by using airflow from the fan on the crankshaft/harmonic balancer to blow on a flapper. What happened to manual primer buttons and/or choke levers? Is that too complicated for women and metrosexual men?

    I have this engine and its a pile of steaming dookie. Every 2-3 uses I have to take the carb apart & spray the fuel bowl clean. Today I was raking leaves & mowing the lawn for the last time of the seasons & 60% through the job my mower died and cleaning the carb didn't help. I'll check this autochoke thing, didn't know thats what it was, very interesting indeed. If its bad I'll probably buy a new B&S mower next year when they are on sale cuz I've had it with this pile of shit Kohler trash

    Epa compliant carbs and autochoke, two really dumb ideas. Epa- cause throwing away a three year old mower is better than having an adjustment screw. Auto-choke- because flipping a lever is hard.

    Damn thing is driving me crazy .. Starts for less than 30 seconds, then dies .. doesn't start.. Wait 30 minutes.. same thing.. wait 30 min.. and away it goes .. NOT a good design in an Ariens Lawnmower .. Am considering taking it apart and installing a manual choke .. Gotta be cheaper than taking a chance on a $50.00 part (following your Amazon link).. Good video.. but boy , some days I'd rather throw a match on it..

    Anything that has the word "auto" in front of it never lasts as long as the "manual" version. Now they are going to electronic control engines. Nothing more reliable than an electronic component on top of a hot engine.
    Did you really send out that mower without trying to cold start it after you repaired it??
