  • Kohler engine hard to start. Assembly error at the factory or someone tried to fix this and reassembled it wrong. I show how to correct it.

    GREAT VIDEO !
The lever on the top on mine was loose. So even though it would work sometimes , sometimes it didn't. I took the carb off to clean it. Was already shiny inside. When I was putting it back together the lever wiggled and moved loosely.
I'm watching this video because I couldn't remember what direction it was supposed to move.
You answered my question exactly. Thank you for sharing that info. *GREAT VIDEO !*

I have that same Toro Recycler that I purchased in 2017. Same issue, choke thermostat on backwards. I’ll be switching it around to see if that fixes my issue. Thanks for the upload.

@@LNDN_73 it must be a frequent manufacturing error. Thanks. Please like and subscribe.

Really I thought it may have been a one time thing but I guess not.

A very common problem, a friend of mine bought one of these brand new about a month and a half later she asked me to take a look at it because it wouldn't start and I found the same problem, it worked for awhile then it did it again, I hadn't heard from her so I thought all was well, her husband took it somewhere they said it was installed wrong and put it back the way it was which was wrong, now the linkage is rubbing on the cover, it's totally messed up, I want to install a manual choke on it and be done with it. Is that you uncle Joe? Has anybody told you that you sound just like Edgar Buchanan?

The basics of these engines are good, real crank bearings and (I think) real rod bearings. That said, these choke mechanisms really suck badly. I want my "customer" to just replace it with a manual cable choke and he done with it. I'm also installing a real gas shut-off to work around another problem with these engines, their needle valve corrosion and sticking.

NICE VIDEO. How can I convert it to a manual choke (cable or other manual system)? My choke butterfly is open on cld start when it should be closed. Why won't manufacturers go back to the old troublefree/simple primer bulb choke system and ditch unreliable auto choke systems?

You may be able to add a control cable for the choke but I have never tried it. Check to see if the choke plate is stuck from varnish in the carb. Spray it with carb cleaner to see if it loosens up first.

Me too. I've got a brand new Kohler RH 265 made in China. Can't get it started. Mine doesn't have the auto choke. Trouble is it doesn't have a manual mechanism either.
Got it from Amazon. Had it more than 30 days before I put the wood chipper together so they won't take it back. Sold by Great Circle USA. SCAM.
