    Spot on Phil. Farrow & Ball when done exactly like you have here, FB is beautiful, my clients are always thrilled, and as a professional painter; more on this in a second, I am always very confident my clients will be over the moon happy for years to come with both my paint job and the Farrow & Ball they've chosen.

    Hi Phil, daughter has just purchased F & B Dead flat for some panelling, have purchased the relevant undercoats and primers for the wood and the plaster as per the data sheets, did wonder if it was overkill, thanks for the reassurance and sound advice, looks like we made the right decision, thankyou.

    Very good advice Phil. I'm guilty of previously interpreting the wall undercoat as ridiculous BUT I soon discovered the "process" when a customer requested everything F&B - it works!

    Lovely job Phil. I learnt something with the farrow and ball system. Like you say don’t skimp on other wall primers then just use two coats of f/b top coat it will bite you in the butt, False economy, go with the system.
    Looks a decent gloss for w/b.
    Chers Phil informatve video.👌

    Hi Phil, great piece as usual.
    I personally dont like the Modern Emulsion finsh in a front room, its more a finish for Bathrooms and kitchens.
    F&B do a dead flat finish much like the estate emulsion finish that is actually tough, wipeable and can also be used on wood and metal so im wondering why you didnt offer the customer that option?
    It would be nice to hear your opinion on it.
    Last week i spent 2 days painting lounge walls in a grade 2 listed property in modern emulsion only for the customer to ask me to go over it again in the dead flat because they didnt like the sheen finish of the modern emulsion .
    Regards

    So the process is
    1. Mist coat with normal contract Matt
    2. FB wall ceiling primer
    3. 2 x coat of final FB paint
    Thank mate!

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  2 дні тому +1

      I wouldn't use normal contract Matt.
      I used a bare plaster primer paint, there's a few out there now.
      Then you can fill sand tye surface.
      Then start your F&B journey with their wall/ceiling primer... Followed by two top coats of their finish paint.
      Just like in the video

    My mates would call this the Muswell Hill mums paint. All the upper and middle class mums meeting for their morning coffee and waxing lyrical about their dead salmon woodwork or elephants breath walls. I’ll give credit to F&B for the marketing but the paint itself is more Faff & Balls than anything else.

    Is F&b a good paint for oak kitchen cupboard doors, if so what products would you use, I want a semi sheen finish, and all the different makes make my head hurt

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  7 місяців тому +1

      prep well and get a good grip primer on the oak, before you use the F&B Uc and F&B top coats (modern eggshell).
      for the Oak, you may be better to look at something that will hold off any staining that the oak may give off.... if it's been a lacquer finish before, it may just be a case of a good clean down and degrease.. and a sand to give a key. You don't want to be sanding all the varnish/lacquer off... hence using a grip primer to aid adhesion.

    I think FB has improved in the last couple of years. I've recently used it on a clients house as they supplied and I was pleasantly surprised how much better it was than the last time i used it which was sometime ago. The primers and eggshell were a dream to spray and flowed back very nicely. The dead flat was a bit of a pig to spray but once i cranked the pressure up on the gxff and swapped out the tip to bigger one it went on fine. I think for a premium paint, I'll still be recommending Bejamin Moore over FB but it certainly wouldn't break my heart to use it again.

      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator that's a decent rate around me to be honest, not sure what the going rate is by you. Also, I'm not vat registered so of course you'd be putting that on top aswell. Do you base your rate on guaranteed hours of work? Some jobs I find I hit the old dead-end midway through the afternoon so my day is only 6 hours instead of a standard 8 so I get a better rate on those days. I find pricing the hardest part of the job if I'm honest and my regular, loyal customers do get a nice little discount, but I'm first to admit I'm just playing at being a businessman!! 😅

    Interested to hear your views on this Phil, we are going for F&B ammonite (a light, warm grey) but because estate emulsion marks if you look at it and modern emulsion has a tad too much sheen I was going to get it made up in Dulux Heritage Velvet Matt. Similar finish to estate emulsion but more durable for a high traffic area. What do you think? Cost isn’t the main concern as no labour to pay and it’ll be getting a coat of primer/undercoat and two topcoats regardless. Thanks 👍🏻

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator

      I like the modern emulsion finish. It's nice. Future video coming using it on my kitchen. Hard wearing and a ideal for walls.

    • @Liverpool1ne
      @Liverpool1ne 7 місяців тому

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I do too, we have it elsewhere but this is for an area that gets a lot of sun and less than perfect walls so the sheen is a bit of a barrier.

      F&B dead flat is not recommended for a diy job . It's not the easiest paint to work with and it's not the most durable . Go for the modern

    Question, how do you know if the bare plaster primer will be ok with the F&B primer + paint? Thanks

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  4 місяці тому

      Because the F&B wall/ceiling primer is the UC, which will go over the bare plaster primer fine... Then you do the f&B emulsion

  • @grahamstacey3149
    @grahamstacey3149 7 місяців тому

    Isn’t it all about the finish? Is F&B that much better than other trade products like Tikkurila, Jonno’s etc. I don’t think there’s any difference personally. It would be interesting to see F&B estate emulsion side by side with say Tikkurila Optiva 3 in the same colour, what’s the perceivable difference and the durability like?

  • @TryDiy

    As you say Phil if the customer is paying for your labour who are you to argue, however I think most people doing their own decorating aren't going to paint the walls 5 times, but then again it's not going to look as good as if it was.

    I think people kid themselves it looks good purely because they have paid a fortune for it...uou cant look at a wall and say 'oh yes I can see that's Farrow an Ball'...a lot of deckies say its rubbish, it isnt, but there's an element of paying for a name built into the price, that said, if the customer is will to pay the moolah, then crack on, I wouldnt even get it mixed in another brand, buy what they ask for.

      I was convinced by a painter to try a good quality alternative in one of my rooms and I hate the finish in it. It has nothing to do with the rest of the house. Painters don't like F&B because they find it a hasle to work with. But the final result has nothing to do.
