Nice tribute! I know it's usually "classic rock"-topics that brings in the big crowds but it would be very interesting with a "Jazz-Week" or something like that on Sea of Tranquility. A period of time with only Jazz-videos. A few ranking the albums, perhaps interview with a famous jazz-player, review of some newer good jazz record... Just jazz!
A wonderful heartfelt tribute. Such an expansive legacy. George has flagged a couple remasters I need to get. Corea and Clarke bring the best out of of everyone they play with and so generous and supportive.
My Spanish Heart is a Chick's favorite album for me, every bit of the album is a precious diamond. (if I put RTF aside for a moment...) Great show guys!
Thanks to George, Mike and Pete for a show packed with recommendations. Three Quartets is the one I listen to the most but there were many discussed that now need listening. Again, my thanks, gents, for doing this show so quickly in honor of Chick.
The duet albums he did with Gary Burton would be very close to the top of my list. Their first collaboration, Crystal Silence, is a landmark record in the new post-fusion jazz of the '70s. There are so many albums that Chick recorded or appeared on that I've never heard, so thanks guys for all the suggestions. I've never been much into fusion or the heavy electric band stuff that Chick did, but I loved the pure lyricism of the early Return to Forever. My top three then: Return to Forever - Return to Forever Chick Corea and Gary Burton - Crystal Silence Return to Forever - Light as a Feather RIP Chick - a modern jazz colossus. Thanks Pete and the guys.
I live in Shizuoka Japan where Yamaha makes its pianos. My sister-in-law, who works for Yamaha, phoned me up one day and asked me “you like Chick Corea right?” I told her yes and she made my jaw drop when she went to tell me “he came by to try the new piano we made for him and he played for us for an hour”. I paid money to see him at jazz festivals and my sister in law had him for an hour in the Yamaha studio. Magical story to me.....
Thank you Pete for this wonderful tribute. I'm amazed that there are so many fellow fans of this music and watching your channel is very comforting in these times.
Beautiful show, and now I really have to go check out more of this stuff. My number one Chick album is Romantic Warrior, without doubt. Love that album!
I first became aware of Chick back in 1976 when Return To Forever appeared live on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test and performed most of The Romantic Warrior album. I sat and watched it with my mum, believe it or not. At that point, I was into Yes, ELP, Camel, Genesis etc, but I'd never heard anything like this. And Al di Meola was a revelation to me. An album no-one mentioned in the video and is worth checking out is Chick's 2006 album, The Ultimate Adventure.
If Bach was around today , he would have been a brother in vision as Chick Corea. The Vigil is really strong along with Inside Out and The Five Peace Band with John is beauty upon your senses. Thanks guys for all the love to a great Artist.
According to Dave Weckl, Corea and the Elektric Band were not working on new music in the studio. The forthcoming album was always slated to be a collection of live performances from the most recent tours. Weckl indicated that the project is now complete and preparations are being made for the release.
1- Where Have I Know You Before 2- Romantic Warrior 3- Lyric Suite For Sextet 4- Return To Forever 5- Three Quartets 6- The Leprechaun 7- The Mad Hatter 8- My Spanish Heart 9- Hymn To The Seventh Galaxy 10- Corea/Hancock Great show. Thanks guys!
The best 4 person band I ever saw was Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola and Lenny White. (mid '70s) Two years ago I got to see Dweezil open for Chick Corea at ACL. What a show that was too. He will be missed. One of the greats.
I love Chick. Unique musician with so many great albums in his discography. I watched this video when it was released, and i’ve seen it several times. It’s the vibe and the topic. I watch i now too, in the middle of the night in Norway. I just played the album Corea/Hancock from ‘79.
I saw Return to Forever at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. Around 2012 ish. Had Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Frank Gambale (the back up Italian guy), and Jean Luc Ponty on certain songs. They blew me away. Stanley Clarke was incredible. He played A Love Supreme by John Coltrane on upright bass. Could Coltrane himself even play his own solo on a different musical instrument? Mind blown. Chick Corea was obviously the ring leader, who put that band together. One of the all time greats in Jazz music.
My first ever exposure to RTF was watching that OGWT programme back in 1974....I already knew the Mahavishnu Orchestra and this was another massive discovery for me
Great show guys, some that I need to check out too. Like Pete, I checked the wiki for Chick's discography and was amazed at the amount of material he has done. So much music to still discover! :) My go to Chick albums: Where Have I Known You Before (RTF) Beneath The Mask (Elektric Band) To The Stars (Elektric Band) My Spanish Heart Past, Present, and Futures Time Warp Five Peace Band Live Spain (RTF) The Vigil The Ultimate Adventure
Thank you for this review. Corea was a music giant. I think these programs should be divided into acoustic and electric, because Corea did a job in both fronts. His catalog is endless, but his Improvisations, and "Children song", with his first album RTF, are a magic period to dive into.
Haven't listened much to Chick Corea's music, may he RIP and God bless.🙏💐 I will check out his music. A great job you have done here in tribute to him. Happy Valentine's Day. ♥️💟💙

My first Chick Corea album was Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy as a youngster. I also play No Mystery into the ground. I also had the original RTF album. Was lucky enough to see RTF ( Chic,Dimeola,Clarke,White) in Boston mid 70s with Orleans opening. Great music. RIP Chic. Love the tribute
Great video. R.I.P, Chick. Only have Romantic Warrior. Bought it because the liner notes to the remaster suggested that it was an album Prog fans might dig.
Have to check out a couple albums I had not heard of. We need more love for the albums "Light as a Feather", "Return to Forever", and the duo album with Gary Burton, "Crystal Silence". The Rhodes playing on those first RTF albums is amazing. Glad to see "Three Quartets" mentioned. For me the best RTF album is "Where Have I Known You Before".
In no particular order- Just 10 favorites. Blue Mitchell - 'The Thing to Do'. 1964. 'Tones for Joan's Bones'. 1968. 'Is'. 1969. Miles Davis - 'Bitches Brew'. 1970. Return to Forever - 'Hymn to the Seventh Galaxy'. 1973. Return to Forever - 'Where Have I Known You Before'. 1974. Return to Forever - 'No Mystery'. 1975. Return to Forever - 'Romantic Warrior'. 1976. Chick Corea/Miroslav Vitous/Roy Haynes - 'Trio Music: Live in Europe'. 1984. Gary Burton - 'Like Minds'. 1998.
So I'm going to chime in here after the show without a direct response to the recorded comments. There is a great recording out there that Chick fans will definitely love- featuring Gary Burton on Vibraphone, also Pat Metheny, RoyHaynes, and Dave Holland. Listen to the outchorus where all players take turns on the melody. Melt my socks!
Here's a little tribute to Chick Corea from 1985 with Herbie Hancock. ua-cam.com/video/22i57u2eMDE/v-deo.html Note: before you criticize me. This video was uploaded on UA-cam in 2013. It was never taken down so I guess he saw it and found it humorous. Along with Herbie.
Three Quartets would be near the top for me. Heavy! And The Five Peace Band kicks major ass! Great pick. This past week, I have been adding Corea albums to a USB 2.0 drive for my car. A couple (maybe) under the radar- Further Explorations on ECM (w/ Eddie Gomez/Paul Motion), Joe Henserson's Mirror, Mirror (w/ Ron Carter, Billy Higgins), Circle's Gathering & Live In Germany. The Akoustic Band album that must be heard...Live At The Tokyo Blue Note w/ Coliatua sitting in for Weckl. Un-fucking-believable!
So many fabulous albums..But Love George's choice of Stan Getz's album Captain Marvel, truly superb. I have the vinyl of that, it'll be next on my playlist...Also Five Peace band is helluva live album. Two of my earliest LP's to own (On ECM) were the first Return to Forever album and Crystal Silence with Gary Burton. Then of course there is the awesome RTF albums....timeless stuff. R.I.P. the legend that is Chick Corea
Awesome tribute dudes! Won't lie though I actually don't think there's any doubt that Chick Corea is one of the most technical keyboardists. I also think you could make a strong argument that he's a more versatile and creative player than Hancock (not to insult Herbie, mind you). I think Chick is the greatest keyboard player ever and one of my favorite composers of all time.
One note. Lenny didn’t like those remixed versions of Romantic Warrior. He felt they didn’t need it...Those remixes from Hymn, Where have I known, & No Mystery were great though.
The Elektric Band debut...Scott Henderson (later of Tribal Tech) smoked! Carlos Rios?!? Man, reminded me that I once played with a guy that played with Rios in a HS garage band. I know Rios also played on some Lionel Ritchie stuff...where the Hell did he go??? Too, Corea on Stanley Clarke's Journey To Love..."Song For John (Coltrane)". With McLaughlin. Insane playing on acoustic instruments.

I wasn't aware he felt that way. I basically agree. Romantic Warrior was the one that didn't cry out for a remaster. But the result is awfully nice.
