Who's Next is so good, the stuff that was left off could make a great album. Pure and Easy would be the best song on almost any album, but it wasn't good enough to make the cut of Who's Next. That is how good Who's Next is.

great list, nothing much to argue with, except perhaps TDSOTM purely due to "On the Run", and The Wall which has a couple of filler tracks on side 3 especially.. And they're both in my album top 10, but not perfect.
Good list you got there. Dark Side of the Moon, Moving Pictures, Rumors, and all the Sabbath albums you mentioned are some of my favorite records. Pretty kickin’ stuff🤘🏼🤘🏼
Led Zeppelin 4-Led Zeppelin A Night at The Opera-Queen Abbey Rd- The Beatles Beggars Banquet- Rolling Stones Are You experienced-Jimi Hendrix Experience Oh,and Never Mind The Bollocks lol(Awesome stuff)
Never Mind The Bullocks is just so heavy, volatile, catchy, crunching, nasty, powerful, vicious.....every tune just makes my balls bleed.....in a good way! Steve Jones never came close to capturing that amazing guitar tone that scares the devil!
Remain In Light just might be the most listenable, adventurous album ever made. The insane rhythms and grooves combined with futuristic synths and melodies......breathtaking originality from top to bottom! Awesome pick!
Being extremely familiar with 4/5ths of your list-the Soft Boys listing had me checking out song samples and HOW IN THE HELL HAVE I NOT HEARD THIS MELODIC MASTERPIECE WITH ROBYN HITCHCOCK OUT FRONT!?!? I have certainly seen the Soft Boys named in many music mags and what not......but never followed up, for some reason. I think I believed they were too experimental, not musical enough. But they are EXACTLY the type of slightly off center, guitar based, smart and clever band that I am always searching for (like The dB's, Game Theory, Wire Train, Let's Active, The Feelies, Velvet Crush etc. ) and now thanks to you, Mike Shannon, I just ordered the c.d. for 10 bucks on amazon! You made my weekend, brother! More EAR CANDY! take care, Treff
.......I just ordered A Can Of Bees to go with Underwater Moonlight! Oh man......this kind of tight, jangly, witty, irreverent music, filled with hooks and harmonies, is why I am HERE! You the man-Mike!
You guys are fun. Even though I'm not a "metal" fan, your descriptions are great. I do like a lot of your other favorites, and that's what keeps me listening.
@@beeragainsthumanity1420 Yeah, Jerome, get that incredible album (vinyl -don't mess around!) out and freakin' bathe in the sonic brilliance that is YES! @@pauld4129 I almost put that one but I wanted one album by each artist so I ended up giving it to debut just because it was historically more impactful, but Red might even be my fave album of theirs.
Boston - Boston was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of a "perfect" album. Great songs front to back, I think my favorite is Hitch A Ride. That sudden transition from slow to fast in the second chorus, the way that last solo slides in following the quiet chorus, just gorgeous songwriting
@@tomb2577 no way, shine on you crazy diamond is definitely not generic, welcome to the machine is not generic, the title track arguably, but it's still amazing and have a cigar has an amazing guitar solo and great vocals. You say it's generic but no band is like pink floyd and no one will be.
@@theyescapedtheweightofdarkness I never said floyd was generic dumbass, I love em. but wywh is generic. soycd is generic gilmour soloing, standard vocals and nothing special (this goes for all parts except 9 but thats just boring and you can not deny) welcome to the machine is just some acoustic guitar with some synths noises that had a seizure. have a cigar has a good solo but nothing else. title track, good that you agree. thank you for listening to my ted talk
It sure is. Punctuated my move from sunny FLA to suburbia in GA where the industrial concrete jungle vibe of Owner of a Lonely Heart and Changes really were emotionally deep.
It's not the Yes that most fans know and love, but damn did they absolutely crush the "pop-prog" genre with 90125. They took Asia to the cleaners in my opinion.
Great idea! Would love to see more! Fire of Unknown Origin is to me a perfect album. Great flow and mixing the BÖC hard rock with some new wave and art pop influences is giving the album endless replay value. Also Sad Wings of Destiny by Priest, Aqualung by Tull, Peter Gabriel 3 and Sheharazade by Renaissance spring to my mind.

Glad to see one album I would choose in there (at the end). Everybody put their 5 so here goes. 1. Boston self titled 2. Aerosmith Toys in the Attic 3. Deep Purple Machine Head 4. Black Sabbath Master of Reality 5. Iron Maiden Killers All great start to finish.
For me, the first album that came to mind was 'Ram' by Paul McCartney. A completely nostalgic choice that I always have to listen to the entire album. If I don't, I get earworms of the songs I didn't listen to.

Wow did not expect someone else to pick Before and After Science but while I watched these guys, I kept thinking about that album . I love the 801 Band live with Mazanera and Eno perhaps as much.
My five that I consider perfect Uriah Heep - Demons and Wizards The Who - Who's Next The Yes Album Supertramp - Crime Of The Century Queen - Sheer Heart Attack Jethro Tull - Benefit By the way maths was never my strong point 😀
Terry Wilson: I had Uriah Heep-Demons and Wizards as my honorable mention but I agree with you and I had Jethro Tull's Benefit as my number one. I still listen to that album all the way through about once every other month. Good choices.

Totally agree on Styx - The Grand Illusion is some of the best albums ever and not a single bad track. It's perfect! 2112, Moving Pictures and Signals by Rush, same thing...
I have always wondered what the fuss with GRAND ILLUSION is all about. I love the album but I find it hard to play when the first 4 albums to me are so much better and stand the test of time much better. I honestly believe that people who rave about GRAND ILLUSION and for that matter PIECES OF EIGHT (the latter I find just horrible) may not have heard the first 4 albums.

“Who’s Next “, “Moving Pictures”, “Never Mind the Bollocks” (great pick Martin), first Pretenders album, U2 “Boy”, “Sticky Fingers”, The Band “Stagefright”, The Pogues, “If I Should Fall from the Grace of God”, etc.
Tuxedo Cat: Your picks are valid, my personal best is Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street but your pick of the Pogues was really exceptional and I whole heartedly agree. I first heard of them, as almost everyone, from Rum Sodomy and the Lash. How can one resist not getting up and dancing, even if you watch a video of them and Shane's ugly teeth. And now on to UA-cam videos of the Pogues, love it.

I was a huge Styx fan as a teenager in the late 70's but eventually moved on from them as my taste in music expanded. So I didn't listen to them for probably 20 years but when I rediscovered Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight I found I appreciate them even more today. Grand Illusion definitely makes my perfect album list
I’m a massive Styx fan but I’ll give you a tip after listening to every album of theirs countless times. By far the best in my opinion are the first 4. If you have not got them, get them. Father OSA from Styx 2 is amazing.
@@michaelperkins9404 Yes! I absolutely love those albums as well. Especially The Serpent is Rising. which along with Styx II is wildly under rated. Michael, can I ask you a question? Do you think Styx is a prog band? A friend and I were talking about that and disagreeing about it. I don't think so. Nobody ever called them a prog band in the 70's at least that I ever heard. I could see where they may be considered a little "prog-ish" but that's as close as I can get to it.
From memory I like the second song but that’s it. Renegade annoys me. I love Crystal Ball, more so than Grand Illusion. Man in the wilderness, Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself I love. Cyclorama is my favourite after the first 4. Everyone has varied tastes and it makes life interesting. I was actually surprised when Pete Pardo said that Grand Illusion was his favourite.
Pete, I bought that Savatage album based on your glowing recommendation elsewhere, and think it's fantastic. I can't believe I never really listened to Savatage before, but how great to be discovering some new (to me) killer metal. Thanks, man.
Really? I turned it on for my workout. Turned it off 90 secs in. Totally dated vocals with no personality. Generic. Exactly what I always figured it was. TIme for Sublime self-titled. A perfect album dripping with style and personality.
Guess I missed this video when it posted but this is a difficult exercise. I see lots of great suggestions here now that I've already pulled 25 CDs from the collection to list here since I couldn't stick to 20. No doubt would be entirely diff after I hear the vid and read the comments. Heh. 25. Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies 24. Rainbow - Rising 23. Ambrosia - Ambrosia 22. Al Stewart - The Year of the Cat 21. Styx - The Grand Illusion 20. Supertramp - Breakfast in America 19. Heart - Dreamboat Annie 18. Black Sabbath - Master of Reality 17. Live - Throwing Copper 16. Steely Dan, Aja. King Crimson, Discipline. Yes, Relayer. TalkingHeads, Speaking in Tongues. Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon. The Porcupine Tree, Fear of a Blank Planet.
A lot of great choices in all posts...really impossible to limit it to five. But like you, Operation : Mindcrime is perfect. Should be listed more IMO.
I love your Porcupine Tree mention! - I just listened to that album again a few days ago. I mention them to people and no one has ever heard of them. Like their earlier stuff as well
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti Queen - A Night at the Opera Deep Purple - In Rock & Machine Head Judas Priest - Sad Wings & Stained Class Yes - Close to the Edge Pink Floyd - Animals King Crimson - Red Motörhead - Ace of Spades AC/DC - Highway to Hell & Back in Black
The first Boston album certainly is awesome, but I am at the point where when I hear "More than a Feeling" I turn it off. I've just heard it too many times. Freebird falls in that same category. If I never hear it again, then I am fine. On the other hand, Foreplay/Long Time is my favorite single rock song of all time. The production, the musicianship, the vocals. The song just soars from the get go. Close to the Edge would be what they used to call a desert island disc. "And You and I" is something I am going to have played at my funeral. It is so life affirming, so gorgeously melodic and an unsurpassed example of rock and roll poetry. If you think about the talent level of those five guys, there are very few other bands who even come if you look at instrument by instrument.
This was an excellent topic for a show and something I’ve considered many times. Definitely looking forward to episode 2. My list is quite long, but trying to avoid the common choices: The Bends - Radiohead The Joshua Tree -U2 Ten - Pearl Jam Wish you were here - Pink Floyd The Thirteenth Step - A Perfect Circle Coliseum Rock - Starz (admittedly I may be on my own with this one) Gathering of Freaks - Freak of Nature Permanent Waves - Rush Metallica - Metallica Although I have never thought about it before, I agree with Martin that Never Mind the Bollocks would fall into this list. Also, Martin’s podcast History in 5 songs ranking Zeppelin albums in context is definitely worth a listen. Their albums are almost considered untouchable but when compared to other albums released at the time it makes you think otherwise.
I came up with this list a while ago (limited to one album per artist): Trashmonk - Mona Lisa Overdrive Porcupine Tree - Deadwing Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring Kate Bush - Hounds of Love Tori Amos - Boys For Pele (with the original version of Professional Widow) Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff Sally Oldfield - Water Bearer Chumbawamba - Anarchy Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion Joni Mitchell - Blue
Ahh this one is a toughie for me but I will try my best with it...Thanks Martin and Pete for your picks and a Part 2?? Oh yes definitely!! Paranoid - Black Sabbath (I do love Planet Caravan and that makes this album perfect for me again one of those albums where the hits are on side 1 and the deep cuts on side 2 a formula that definitely works) Black Country Communion - Black Country Communion (I was blown away when I heard this in 2010 and I remember going to the pub and playing every track on the jukebox start to finish!!) Van Halen - Van Halen (Start to finish just mind-blowingly good from Running with the Devil to On Fire that perfect sandwich subway wished they made) Hysteria - Def Leppard (Love it or hate it you can't deny this is an album made for radio and with 7 hit singles, I would say that's a pretty perfect album) Bandolier - Budgie (Six tracks is all it needs, all brilliant...I never tire of this LP, still one of my all time favourites) Have a great weekend to you both and I shall see you soon :) Nick
The Cure - Faith / Pornography / Disintegration Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime Metallica - And Justice For All Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory? Tesla - Mechanical Resonance Slowdive - Souvlaki / Just For A Day M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us Ride - Going Blank Again The Smiths - Strangeways, Here We Come Depeche Mode - Ultra Marilyn Manson - The Golden Age Of Grotesque The Doors - Strange Days Morrissey - Viva Hate King Diamond - Abigail Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
"Perfect" albums IMO Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King (I agree 100% with Pete) Metallica - Master of Puppets Amon Amarth - Once Sent From the Golden Hall & Versus the World (Their best two albums IMO) Nightwish - Century Child (Even the extended version, I love every song) Chastain - Mystery of Illusion (Not the best production, but I can easily listen to this whole album) Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper & Hatebreeder (If I'm in the mood for Children of Bodom, I can easily do either of these start to finish) Honorable Mention: I could listen to probably any of Draognforce's first 4 albums from start to finish, but the songs all sound so similar I could just listen to all 4 on shuffle and not really care. Dragonforce to me is something where you listen to the band itself rather than a particular album or song (At least their first 4 albums). EP (Less tracks so separate category) Amon Amarth - Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds Warlord - Deliver Us ALMOST made the list; Metallica - Ride the Lightning - Love it, except I never cared for Fight Fire with Fire Lacuna Coil - Comalies - I could do without Angel's Punishment and Aeon, LOVE the rest of the album Most of Sabbath's first 10 albums except 1-2 songs I don't care for that ruin it. Rat Salad, FX, Embryo etc. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman - Little Dolls fucks this one up, could do without that song, otherwise it's my favorite Ozzy album Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears - Mr. Tinkertrain - Hate this song, other than this track I love this whole album. Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith - Could live without Jawbreaker and Eat Me Alive Judas Priest - Painkiller - A few tracks just aren't near the level of others. I love the Painkiller, Between the Hammer & The Anvil, Touch of Evil, One Shot at Glory, Tracks 2-5 are kinda just "okay" for me. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast - Could do without Gangland or Invaders Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time - Could do without Heaven Can Wait, especially where they just keep repeating "Heaven can WAAAAAIT" over and over. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - The Title Track where it just repeats "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" like 8 times in a row, just overkill, the only low point on the album for me. Running Wild - Under Jolly Roger - Not a big fan of Raw Ride
1984 - VH Wheels of fire - Cream Ritual de lo Habitual - Janes addiction Outlandos d'amour - The police Heavy Weather - Weather report Axis Bold as Love - Jimi hendrix Violator - depeche mode
Renaissance: Turn of the Cards, Ashes are burning Traffic: Low Spark of High Heeled Boys King Crimson: Court of the Crimson King Blind Faith Foreigner (1st album)
That's some devastating choices. They are relatively perfect albums - though Blind Faith, as massive as it is, may have a less-than-legendary cut on it. I mean it's still massive; even Abbey Road had Octopus's Garden, right? And I will never to my dying days understand how anyone could put any Foreigner album above that genuinely perfect first one! Good call!
I can tell Martins a true Punk at heart, lol... A Hell Yeah to ACDCs Highway to Hell , my favorite Lp of theirs . Non stop kick ass Rock , beginning to end, so underrated !
Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn Kansas - Leftoverture Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast Styx - The Grand Illusion Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is about as close as we can come to a 'perfect album.' Nearly all hits, listenable end-to-end, and important for Elton's career. Still relevant today.
If Pete just did these shows 24/7 I would give up on cable TV for good.

Pete Pardo and the SOT channel bring me hours of joy, especially during these crazy and challenging times over the last year.. And I just wanted to say thank you.

Good but you forgot the wall by Pink Floyd
@@ratio567 I don't love the Wall as much as I did growing up. I also don't think it's as tight a record as the 3 that came before it
I almost went with Aja, but I got the news is good, but is a noticeable drop off from the rest of the album.

The Who Who's Next
Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers
Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon

@@garyserdoz6915 Who's next is indeed one of the greatest rockalbum ever.
But it could have been a bit greater if "pure & easy " wasn' t banned.
Townshend released it on his first solo album, but without Daltreys voice.
" Once was a note pure and easy" was the initial idea for the narrative he was working on.
I think it' s a very good song.
I wanted to add Queen - Night @ the opera and UFO Force it
Who's Next is so good, the stuff that was left off could make a great album. Pure and Easy would be the best song on almost any album, but it wasn't good enough to make the cut of Who's Next. That is how good Who's Next is.

Deep Purple- In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head
Dire Straits- Brothers in Arms
Asia- Debut
Toto IV
Excellent list
great list, nothing much to argue with, except perhaps TDSOTM purely due to "On the Run", and The Wall which has a couple of filler tracks on side 3 especially.. And they're both in my album top 10, but not perfect.
Im kinda prog rock and prog jazz. Jean luc ponty, enigmatic oceans, and cosmic messenger, Return to Forever , Romantic Warrior, Focus , Moving waves , aphrodites child 666,
Animals could use a little trimming. It's definitely an A+ release, but I'd give it a 98, not 100.
Good list you got there. Dark Side of the Moon, Moving Pictures, Rumors, and all the Sabbath albums you mentioned are some of my favorite records. Pretty kickin’ stuff🤘🏼🤘🏼
Led Zeppelin 4-Led Zeppelin
A Night at The Opera-Queen
Abbey Rd- The Beatles
Beggars Banquet- Rolling Stones
Are You experienced-Jimi Hendrix Experience
Oh,and Never Mind The Bollocks lol(Awesome stuff)
Never Mind The Bullocks is just so heavy, volatile, catchy, crunching, nasty, powerful, vicious.....every tune just makes my balls bleed.....in a good way! Steve Jones never came close to capturing that amazing guitar tone that scares the devil!
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight
The Who - Tommy
The Beatles - Rubber Soul
Syd Barrett
Tommy has a few snoozers
Ah yes, i love these shows with Martin. Just what i needed today, thanks Pete.
Yep, it’s always a good day whenever they do a show!
Golden Earring - Moontan
Wishbone Ash - Argus
Camel - Mirage
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Wishbone Ash!
Nice list but 8 miles high by Golden Earring was a far better album.
Probably in the wrong crowd here, but
Bridge over Troubled Water - S and G
Also,
Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
Jailbreak......Also on my list and got taken out added in taken out 😂😂👌🏻👌🏻
You guys are fun. Even though I'm not a "metal" fan, your descriptions are great. I do like a lot of your other favorites, and that's what keeps me listening.
ELP - Trilogy
Kansas- Leftoverture
Yes- Going For the one
These albums I still listen to from beginning to end. They are perfect to my ears
Going For The One is sublime, and absolutely beautiful and packed with melodic brilliance.....so underrated!

Haven't listened to Going For the One in a long time.
Time to dig into the vinyls again.
@@beeragainsthumanity1420 Yeah, Jerome, get that incredible album (vinyl -don't mess around!) out and freakin' bathe in the sonic brilliance that is YES! Steve Howe's acoustic playing on this album goes straight to my soul.....breathtakingly beautiful! I gotta get a better turntable and a bigger checking account.
why trilogy and not brain salad surgery

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Deep Purple - Machine Head
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Faith No More - Angel Dust
Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger is my #6 (I only listed my top 5).
Also King Crimson Red
@@pauld4129 I almost put that one but I wanted one album by each artist so I ended up giving it to debut just because it was historically more impactful, but Red might even be my fave album of theirs.
Romantic Warrior is beyond perfect
Boston - Boston was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of a "perfect" album. Great songs front to back, I think my favorite is Hitch A Ride. That sudden transition from slow to fast in the second chorus, the way that last solo slides in following the quiet chorus, just gorgeous songwriting

The Who-Quadrophenia
The Rolling Stones-Beggars Banquet
The Beatles-Revolver
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here

wywh is so overrated ngl, its a good album and all, but so generic
Revolver is one of my favorite albums but I'd argue that it isn't perfect just because of Yellow Submarine. Great list though.
@@tomb2577 no way, shine on you crazy diamond is definitely not generic, welcome to the machine is not generic, the title track arguably, but it's still amazing and have a cigar has an amazing guitar solo and great vocals.

have a cigar has a good solo but nothing else.
title track, good that you agree.
thank you for listening to my ted talk
YES 90125! Never get tired of it. Start to finish it’s excellent!
It sure is. Punctuated my move from sunny FLA to suburbia in GA where the industrial concrete jungle vibe of Owner of a Lonely Heart and Changes really were emotionally deep.
Not their best album but it does quailfy.
It's not the Yes that most fans know and love, but damn did they absolutely crush the "pop-prog" genre with 90125. They took Asia to the cleaners in my opinion.
In the same with Going for the one by Yes
Got to see both versions live. I love Steve but Trevor is nice too. Love 90125 and Big Generator.

Grand Illusion definitely makes my perfect album list

Michael, can I ask you a question? Do you think Styx is a prog band? A friend and I were talking about that and disagreeing about it. I don't think so. Nobody ever called them a prog band in the 70's at least that I ever heard. I could see where they may be considered a little "prog-ish" but that's as close as I can get to it.

14. Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
13. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
12. Procol Harum - Whiter Shade of Pale
11. Yes - Close to the Edge
10. The Who - Who's Next
9. U2 - The Joshua Tree
8. Renaissance - Turn of the Cards
7. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
6. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
5. Wishbone Ash - Argus
4. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
3. Counting Crows - August and Everything After
2. Traffic - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
1. Led Zeppelin - Zoso
I dislike this list, but thanks for shouting out The Year of the Cat. The title track is sublime.
1. Queen II
2. Pink Floyd The Wall
3. Meatlloaf Bat Out Of Hell
4. Genesis Duke
5. Beatles Abbey Road
You were so close with Queen II.
Queen I
Maybe it was a typo 😊
Queen II is a great album. I just prefer I
Queen II is Great.
Steely Dan, Aja. King Crimson, Discipline. Yes, Relayer. TalkingHeads, Speaking in Tongues. Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon. The Porcupine Tree, Fear of a Blank Planet.
Queensryche- operation: mindcrime
Black Sabbath - heaven and hell
Judas Priest - stained class
Mastodon - Emperor of sand
Rush - Moving pictures
A lot of great choices in all posts...really impossible to limit it to five. But like you, Operation : Mindcrime is perfect. Should be listed more IMO.
Good choices. Haven't heard Emperor of Sand but I will give it a go
I always enjoy the shows with Martin. Such a fountain of knowledge.
The perfect album is the album you played so much, you never need to here it again.
Anyone for Aqualung? I hope so.
A lot of great music taste in here.
It makes my list.
Aqualung is indeed a perfect album.
Yes it’s excellent but I’m partial to Stand up
How about Thick as a Brick.
@@bobmeyer09 Tull has at least four, maybe five, perfect albums including TAAB.
I'll go with 3 fairly recent ones: Frances the Mute - The Mars Volta
Fear of A Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree
Dead Magic - Anna Von Hausswolff
I love your Porcupine Tree mention! - I just listened to that album again a few days ago. I mention them to people and no one has ever heard of them. Like their earlier stuff as well
Great Anna Von Hausswolff pick
@@jenton70 thanks bud. She is amazing and Dead Magic is a masterpiece.
@@stephenhoag9372 - Absolutely. FOADP is soooo good. My favorite Porcupine / Wilson album.
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Deep Purple - In Rock & Machine Head
Judas Priest - Sad Wings & Stained Class
Yes - Close to the Edge
Pink Floyd - Animals
King Crimson - Red
Motörhead - Ace of Spades
AC/DC - Highway to Hell & Back in Black
Love the shows with Martin Popoff. He’s the authority on so much!!! And love every FAQ book I’ve read of his. Thank you Pete for your passion!
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping
Beatles- Abbey Road
Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent
Second Helping. What an album.
I diverge when it comes to Machine Head. In Rock for me.
I skip, Smoke on the Watre. Not because I don't like it, I might add.
This was an excellent topic for a show and something I’ve considered many times. Definitely looking forward to episode 2.
My list is quite long, but trying to avoid the common choices:
The Bends - Radiohead
The Joshua Tree -U2
Ten - Pearl Jam
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
The Thirteenth Step - A Perfect Circle
Coliseum Rock - Starz (admittedly I may be on my own with this one)
Gathering of Freaks - Freak of Nature
Permanent Waves - Rush
Metallica - Metallica
Although I have never thought about it before, I agree with Martin that Never Mind the Bollocks would fall into this list.
Also, Martin’s podcast History in 5 songs ranking Zeppelin albums in context is definitely worth a listen. Their albums are almost considered untouchable but when compared to other albums released at the time it makes you think otherwise.
Jimi Hendrix- Electric Ladyland
Iron Maiden- Powerslave
Metallica- Kill ‘Em All
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Helloween- Keeper of the Seven Keys
I came up with this list a while ago (limited to one album per artist):
Trashmonk - Mona Lisa Overdrive
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Tori Amos - Boys For Pele (with the original version of Professional Widow)
Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff
Sally Oldfield - Water Bearer
Chumbawamba - Anarchy
Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion
Joni Mitchell - Blue
Ahh this one is a toughie for me but I will try my best with it...Thanks Martin and Pete for your picks and a Part 2?? Oh yes definitely!!
Paranoid - Black Sabbath (I do love Planet Caravan and that makes this album perfect for me again one of those albums where the hits are on side 1 and the deep cuts on side 2 a formula that definitely works)
Black Country Communion - Black Country Communion (I was blown away when I heard this in 2010 and I remember going to the pub and playing every track on the jukebox start to finish!!)
Van Halen - Van Halen (Start to finish just mind-blowingly good from Running with the Devil to On Fire that perfect sandwich subway wished they made)
Hysteria - Def Leppard (Love it or hate it you can't deny this is an album made for radio and with 7 hit singles, I would say that's a pretty perfect album)
Bandolier - Budgie (Six tracks is all it needs, all brilliant...I never tire of this LP, still one of my all time favourites)
Have a great weekend to you both and I shall see you soon :)
Nick
SF Sorrow - The Pretty Things
Revolver - Beatles
Forever Changes - Love
Odessey and Oracle - Zombies
Leftoverture - Kansas
Hey Pete how about a show where Martin picks a post-punk album and tries to get you into it.
The Cure - Faith / Pornography / Disintegration
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Metallica - And Justice For All
Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory?
Tesla - Mechanical Resonance
Slowdive - Souvlaki / Just For A Day
M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us
Ride - Going Blank Again
The Smiths - Strangeways, Here We Come
Depeche Mode - Ultra
Marilyn Manson - The Golden Age Of Grotesque
The Doors - Strange Days
Morrissey - Viva Hate
King Diamond - Abigail
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
Those Slowdive albums are just like heaven.
"Perfect" albums IMO
Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King (I agree 100% with Pete)
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Amon Amarth - Once Sent From the Golden Hall & Versus the World (Their best two albums IMO)
Nightwish - Century Child (Even the extended version, I love every song)
Chastain - Mystery of Illusion (Not the best production, but I can easily listen to this whole album)
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper & Hatebreeder (If I'm in the mood for Children of Bodom, I can easily do either of these start to finish)
Honorable Mention: I could listen to probably any of Draognforce's first 4 albums from start to finish, but the songs all sound so similar I could just listen to all 4 on shuffle and not really care. Dragonforce to me is something where you listen to the band itself rather than a particular album or song (At least their first 4 albums).
EP (Less tracks so separate category)
Amon Amarth - Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds
Warlord - Deliver Us
ALMOST made the list;
Metallica - Ride the Lightning - Love it, except I never cared for Fight Fire with Fire
Lacuna Coil - Comalies - I could do without Angel's Punishment and Aeon, LOVE the rest of the album
Most of Sabbath's first 10 albums except 1-2 songs I don't care for that ruin it. Rat Salad, FX, Embryo etc.
Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman - Little Dolls fucks this one up, could do without that song, otherwise it's my favorite Ozzy album
Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears - Mr. Tinkertrain - Hate this song, other than this track I love this whole album.
Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith - Could live without Jawbreaker and Eat Me Alive
Judas Priest - Painkiller - A few tracks just aren't near the level of others. I love the Painkiller, Between the Hammer & The Anvil, Touch of Evil, One Shot at Glory, Tracks 2-5 are kinda just "okay" for me.
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast - Could do without Gangland or Invaders
Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time - Could do without Heaven Can Wait, especially where they just keep repeating "Heaven can WAAAAAIT" over and over.
1984 - VH
Wheels of fire - Cream
Ritual de lo Habitual - Janes addiction
Outlandos d'amour - The police
Heavy Weather - Weather report
Axis Bold as Love - Jimi hendrix
Violator - depeche mode
Renaissance: Turn of the Cards, Ashes are burning
Traffic: Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
King Crimson: Court of the Crimson King
Blind Faith
Foreigner (1st album)
That's some devastating choices. They are relatively perfect albums - though Blind Faith, as massive as it is, may have a less-than-legendary cut on it. I mean it's still massive; even Abbey Road had Octopus's Garden, right?
And I will never to my dying days understand how anyone could put any Foreigner album above that genuinely perfect first one! Good call!
Traffic. Good call!!
Montrose - Montrose
Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell
Aerosmith - Rocks
Ac/Dc - Powerage
UFO - Wild, Willing, & The Innocent
Nice selection. I prefer Lights Out & Obsession next for UFO.
Lights Out (1977)
Obsession (1978)
I can tell Martins a true Punk at heart, lol... A Hell Yeah to ACDCs Highway to Hell , my favorite Lp of theirs . Non stop kick ass Rock , beginning to end, so underrated !
It's so awesome to see everyone's lists.
Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn
Kansas - Leftoverture
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Styx - The Grand Illusion
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
I forgot about Elton - great pick!
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is about as close as we can come to a 'perfect album.' Nearly all hits, listenable end-to-end, and important for Elton's career. Still relevant today.
