I have a 7.5hp Johnson that runs but I feel like it doesn't rev as high as I wish it did but it only has a low speed adjustment needle. Is there a way to adjust the top end or lean it out more?
Your motor should be properly jetted from the factory. If it is not running properly, the main jet is most likely partially blocked. The only high speed adjustment is to change the jet, but unless someone else messed with it and changed it to the wrong one before, it should already be correct. I would suggest a thorough cleaning of the carburetor.
friend bought one of these and took it out first time today. throttle doesn't turn in neutral but does when in forward. is this normal for this engine? can't adjust throttle level in neutral? thanks
The throttle should be limited in neutral. That is to prevent over speeding the engine with no load on it. If it is t moving at all, the idle speed stop could be adjusted up far enough to just allow it to be shifted into neutral and no lower. At that point it would be effectively stuck between the low and high speed stops while in neutral. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Hi. I got a 1976 evinrude 6hp and for some reason it won't idle down really low for a long time. It will idle, but then it quits on me and have to start it up again. This happened alot when gigging fish going down river. Any suggestions on what it is?
There could be a number of reasons for this or any combination of them. It could be a slightly dirty carburetor, it could be the low speed mixture setting is a bit off. It could be dirty points or a bit of a difference in the ignition timing between the two cylinders. These are the most likely things I can think of that would cause your trouble. Thanks for watching!
This motor got 19.3 mph out of this 9.9. The 18 got 23.1 mph. It probably would have done a bit better with an 11P prop. These 9.9s are great little motors. The 1950s and 60s 10hps were very comparable. I have a couple 1950s 10s that have bettered 20mph on this boat. Thanks for watching!

Hey you look like you were going pretty fast! Any idea about what mph you were going roughly! I have a 1980 Sea King 15 Horse that I put a lot of work in. I got it running pretty good. It seems to top out at 19 mph with the lightest weight on a 14 foot aluminum boat and a 10.8 ft inflatable. But if this Johnson/ Rude 9.9 can keep up with my 15 horse, that would kind of make me butthurt lol. Maybe my year of Chryslers weren’t known to be the fastest?
This 9.9 was pushing this 16 foot aluminum boat at just over 19mph. I have a couple of vintage OMC 10hp motors that will break 20mph on this boat. I also have a early '80s Chrysler built Sea King 15. I need to finish tuning it up and take it put for a run. I'd expect around 20mph out of that motor. A comparable OMC 15 of the same vintage as this 9.9 will push this boat to around 24mph. The 1950s ('53-'56) OMC 15s will do about 21-22mph on this boat. The Chrysler 15s were not as fast as these OMC 15s, but they're very light weight and compact. Thanks for watching!

based on my outboard motor knowledge these little outboards was really are really good motors as OMC made these outboards was a better than the newer veriosn of the mercs in the same year as far i knew these was really tough little outboards and i knew thiswas really the case as a mechanic on these outboards in a outboard motor shop on the central coast in NSWW in Australia as i had worked on theese outboards as a a mechanic in good learning as i did some work experience with the agood outboard shop thiswas really the firm i worked for was Arizona outboards they had taught me to learn to work on all OMC outboards thiswas really my knowledge on these little outboards was based on what i saw in the shop i had worked in as they are good at servicing these little outboards thiswas really how i learnt to service these OMC outboards mainly the Johnsons these was mainstay of our time servicing and reparing these outboards thiswas really the case as im a ex outboard mechanic now im still keeping up on the trade via my boating mags and the likes thiswas really based in my knowledge these was really good outboard motors in Australia these outboards was on smaller boat than that as we have 12ft tinnies these was the sort of boats these motor waas used on mostly in Australia thiswas really due to the boating scene in Australia as we have these 12 ft tinny boat most of them are sed for fishing as far i knew thiswas what these outboards was used for in Australia and as we use these little outboards alot on our saltwater lakes in Australia thiswas based on what i knew these days in futr i see thiswas really the case in my based on my views on these really good little outboards as if they are cared for in the right way they last forever in futre these was really good motor in futr if you care and service them regularly and stick to the sevice routines you cat go wrong with these outboards as far i knwew thiswas based on my OMC outboards knowledge in the outboard trade as i knew thiswas really th e case for me as i worked on theese outboatrrds in the time i was working in that particualr shop at the time thiswas on 24yrs now i had been keeping up on the boating scene theese days in futre as newer motor arent as good as the older model outboards as newer outboards was really far too hard to fix at home these days i see thiswas really see a resurgence in older outboards by the newer boaters in futre as older motor was getting better care in futre as people will seek out these outboards as newer model outboard really get far too complex in futre thiesd was really my basic boating views on these motors made by OMC was a really good motor id say in futre they should revive OMC and bring theese outboards back intobeing made in futre under a revicied OMC in futre thiwas really what i was wanteed tosee happen in futre was see OMC be reborn in futre as a good honest outboard makers in futre making good and honest and reliable outboard motors in futre thiswas i see that day may happen when a reborn OMC was restablished in futre id say in futre i like OMC be started up as a company run by boating industry people who knew what the customer wants in outboard not be tied by beancounters thiswas my hope in futre for OMC be reborn in future thiwas the case thiswas my hope in futre now
These are great little motors. The pinnacle of the fishing outboard motor in my view. They're not really my favorite to work on but they're excellent motors and pack a lot of performance into a very compact package. Thanks for watching!

@@nickguillen2521 That knob is the low speed (idle) mixture adjustment needle. That is to tune the engine idle mixture for best idle quality as ambient conditions change.
Nice motor for sure but not fun to work on. Fixing a neighbors late production 1987 9.9 Johnson that has the large fuel pump on the water jacket with pulse hose going around the back to tie into a starboard bypass cover. Hoses going in awkward directions and the fuel pump needs a 90 degree barbed reducer elbow for smaller fuel line to the carb. There is literally only 2.5 inches of fuel supply hose attached to the pump cap. Have to take carb apart again to clean and check as the motor still will not start. This after the new carb kit and link and synch which was way off. Motor has good spark and 110 psi on both cylinders. Tomorrow is another day:)
Agreed 💯! I like these little motors. They're wonderful motors, but working on these is not my favorite thing to do either. Everything is so tight and densely packed under the cowl. Very little room to work in there. Thanks for watching!

Thanks to another good read of Leroys Ramblings tonight I discovered that the low idle needle should be 4 turns out from closed instead of 1.5. May not need to open the carb again afterall. I made a 2 line to 1 line fuel hose adapter as well last week so will be testing it tomorrow.

There are plenty of them around. They typically bring pretty good money. Finding a good one at a bargain price isn't easy, but they are excellent motors. If it is something you plan to use regularly and you don't already have a bunch of motors, I'd say it's worth paying up for one of these. If you are not running restricted lakes and waterways, I recommend the 15hp. Same package size and weight, you may as well have all the performance the package offers. Thanks for watching!
