@@DudefishhTV replaced plug, wires, water pump, lower housing oil, ignition coils, fuel filter, and guts in the carburetor, used old carb housing after cleaning rust out of the pan in it.
You video helped me. I have a 9.9 that I inherited from my mother in law and it hadn't been ran in 20 years. Your video's help me and saved me bucks brother.
Pro tip: an easier way to put the new impeller into the housing is to first install it on the drive shaft. Then "screw" the housing onto it in the correct rotation. The impeller will slip right in with minimal effort and be centered on the shaft and the housing. Makes lining up the key easier that way too.
Good video, thanks! A key missed point is that the bolt securing the shift linkage must be REMOVED, not simply loosened. As you pointed out later, the shift er shaft has a tapered section that the bolt engages, so it mechanically locks the shaft in place, not just "clamps" it like I thought. As a result, I had a devil of a time trying to figure out why the lower unit assembly wouldn't just slide out.
I just did the lower removal on a 91 9.9 and after removing the linkage screw I put a flathead between the 2 halves to allow the rod to drop out. I tried everything before this and it helped instantly. Zip ties help install the impeller easily also.
Thanks my man, have a project boat I’ve been working on and I came across this motor, (long story) and I am getting ready replace the water pump as a precaution before starting for the first time. Hasn’t ran for years... thanks again!
Ahhhh, so the shift rod connect is between the gear case and lower unit, I usually have 1960s motors in the 22 cc platform, and they have the rod connector in a nice easy window. I just got one of these motors but 15hp/1980, it’s very different from everything I’m used to. impeller be here tomoro, I’ll install it then I’ll go from there... it looks like it should run, with the usual fuel system TLC that any long-unused 2stroke outboard needs. Thanks for the video!
Great video and very easy to follow but what the trick with the gear linkage?? I cant seem to get the top and bottom sections to overlap enough to be joined. (First outboard owner, not a mechanic but normally pretty handy at most things - this has me stumped!!!)
Like you I have a long shaft, my unit had the same grommet as yours installed [the short one] the instructions seem to indicate that grommet number three [the on with the large flared top] is required. I used the same one as you did. ?? The tell tale is pretty weak on my unit, even with the new pump.
What did you use to get the bolts out of the spacer unit. I tried a flex extension but won’t budge it and won’t fit in the space around the bolt. I can get at the lower housing bolts but can’t find any thing to remove the spacer bolts. Frustrating. I know I can replace the water pump if I can get the bolts our. Please suggest something. Thanks
I'm trying to dial in a Johnson 7.5hp. I have it on a 9.4 bass tender and it feels like it runs and revs fine but it doesn't have the same power I've seen other people get out of Thier boats. I also get sludge coming out of the exhaust over the prop.
Great video thank you. I have a 1992 9.9hp evinrude and after taking it out of storage over the winter, the throttle will not turn in neutral. Its like its siezed. It will engage when shifted in drive but once back in neutral its siezed and the idle dies. Any suggestions?

Super helpful videos on the 9.9s. I had zero confidence to work on it myself until now. Picking up my first aluminum boat with a 9.9 next week. Looking forward to breaking it down and checking all this stuff out. The guy I’m buying it from said it has been sitting for the last 5-6 years but the fuel had been drained prior to that. Any advice on the first few things I should be concerned with first? I’m assuming this motor is going to need some love to get running again but he said it ran great so 🤷♂️.
After sitting that long I would go after the water pump and replace the impeller in it. If he ran it dry before storage, If it were me I would hook the water up and filler up with some two stroke mix fuel and try to start it and see how well it runs. I would pull the plug and check for spart first but then give it a yank.
There should definitely be moved more water flowing out after you replace the pump. It is likely that your exhaust plate grommets are restricting flow and need to be replaced. There is a easy way to check this before you pull the powerhead to see. Make a tight seal on the copper water inlet tube with a straw and a spare grommet and blow into it. If it is hard to blow, you will need to pull the powerhead and check those grommets. If it’s easy to blow, and you’re still getting low water out of the telltale, it’s likely something is blocking right before the telltale and your cooling is still fine. Always check with a temp gun when your testing.
