As a kid I had a 8ft Jon boat rated for 3hp. So I put a 7.5hp on it with a slide throttle (Scott Atwater). While doing a top speed run I moved up to the bow to help trim the boat. It started to turn then the motor went full lock sideways spinning the boat on a dime at full throttle. Somehow I got back there and cut off the engine. Lots of fun. Thanks for bringing back memories.

Some years back we had a 13’ Alumacraft V-hull with a 9.8 Mercury motor. Later we graduated to the larger, flat-bottom, aluminum Tracker. Naturally, the Tracker was an upgrade, but.. there’s a lot to be said for the V-hull, and the way it cuts through the water. We now have a pontoon boat, but I still miss that little Alumacraft.

Build yourself a jack plate I made one for my dads 14 foot polarcraft with an old 80s model game fisher 15 hp we only moved the motor up about 1 1/2” but it has 5” of setback and that helps your prop get more bite we picked up 4 mph for a top speed of 25

Trust me, one wave over the side of that boat will sink it to the bottom. Be very careful, watch the weather, and use that motor to get you off the lake quick and remember to take the waves head on. Do not let them come upon you from the side.

I have a tohatsu 9.8 on mine. Great little motor, quiet, sips gas, starts easy.
By the way, your merc is made by tohatsu. All merc and Suzuki motors 20hp and down are made by tohatsu. They’ve made motors for the Japanese commercial fishing industry for decades.
Make sure you run ethanol eliminator or ethanol free gas

Just bought a Lowe 14-40 m with a 9.9 4 stroke on it. Got it for $600 because the engine was seized and gas in the crank case. Drained the crank case and got the engine freed up. Hope to have it on the water this weekend.

I ended up with the 1236 because it can fit with trailer inside of my shed out back. Started with a 50 Minn Kota trolling motor, but quickly realized I needed more oomph. 6hp Mercury ended up being the motor I chose, and it get's this very narrow boat up to 19.5mph on a calm lake! That feels very fast for such a tiny boat, I've driven Jet Skis on Vacation before and still feel this tiny aluminum boat feels quick.
Enjoy your bigger little boat I love mine!

I'm curious how fast it would push my lowe 1640 jon with gear and 2 guys. I have a older tahatsu 18hp 2stroke, with gear and 2 guys probably 21-22 mph, if just me Ive hit close to 25 mph a few times. I'm considering a 8hp to 9.9 4 stroke for trolling, and throwing the 18hp on another boat. Extremely been impressed with the 18hp Tahatsu and its a 1986 model. Its a power house, and the guys that fish with me, are impressed too. To me it runs better than the old John/Evinrude's/Mercs my family ran and I grew up on. My 18 runs way better than the old 25 Johnson my grandpa had. Would be nice to have a quiet 4 stroke for trolling. Been having issues with electric troll motors. Reviews I read on newer ones don't look very promising either.

    I have a 1436 too.
Can I ask you for your opinion/suggestion based on your experience so far?
I am stuck between two motors for my upgrade.
Either the new fuel injected 9.8 from Tohatsu/Mercury (35% better fuel economy vs the outgoing motor) OR…
The fuel injected 9.9 from Suzuki that has about 1/3 more displacement but is severely choked to bring it down from 20hp to 9.9. It is only 12lbs heavier and almost the same price. I can then later have the option to bump it to a 20hp for a few hundred.
The 9.8 should be smoother running and more efficient. The 9.9/20 would be able to cruise at half throttle in the low 20s mph… and it’s only 12lbs heavier.
    What would you choose?

@@fbi1069 I have no doubt that it’ll work but you run the risk of increased liability if you ever have a crash or similar incident. The first thing law enforcement and insurance companies do will be to check the ratings compared to what’s actually mounted on the boat. Plus, manufacturers and government agencies test boats and through this testing, arrive at max specs for hp and capacities to ensure the safety of passengers as well as other users on the water.
If you accept these risks, go for it.
Curious- If the 3 hp rating (or the 6 you have now) isn’t enough for you, why didn’t you buy a boat with a higher rating in the first place?
