  • Are you ready to embark on an epic adventure beneath the waves? Join me as I dive into the depths to explore the magnificent wreck of the Edwin S. Nettleton, a 400 ft World War II Liberty Ship that was scuttled as an artificial reef off the coast of Brunswick, Georgia in 1975.
As I dive the dark green waters, the excitement builds as I notice a small entrance, a doorway that leads into the wreck through to the other side of the ship. I quickly swim through the opening, feeling a rush of adrenaline as I make my way through the dark, narrow passage and then back again to begin my ascent.
The Nettleton is also a popular fishing as well as dive spot, and we can see why. Its size is awe-inspiring, and we can't wait to explore every inch of it.
This wreck always has the potential to encounter sharks - bull, sand and lemon mostly. Late in the summer, I had an unexpected visitor. A large lemon shark follows us, circling us as we waited for the boat to pick us up at the surface. Despite the possibility of a the shark encounter, this dive is an adventure of a lifetime.
Average depth for wrecks located off the Georgia coast is 75 to 90 feet. We also have a live bottom ledge with depths of 115 feet. Typical dive season starts around the middle of April when water temps rise above 70 degrees. Water clarity is always a hit or miss. The further you offshore though the visibility becomes better. I have a fantastic group of friends who dive and we are always happy to take new friends along. We have had brand new divers up to highly certified technical divers out with us so experience is not a big deal but competency is.
