  • This is an open ocean dive on the Razor Wreck. This is the wreck of a coal carrying ship that sank 40 miles East of Saint Simons Island in the early 1900's. It's a popular fishing spot as most of the wreck is now an artificial reef in about 85 feet of water. Visibility is usually pretty good - on this day it was a bit cloudy. You'll see the boiler from the engine that rises some 30 feet off the ocean floor. Great dive and easy to get to. This is most of the dive although some portions have been edited for time and bad camera angles.
Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources has had a very active artificial reef program for the last 40 years. We now have hundreds of artificial reefs dotting the entire coast of Georgia. We also have numerous sunken wrecks in various sizes, 400 foot Nettleton to sailboats, along with several wrecks that sunk in storms or were torpedoed in WW2. Georgia also has several decommissioned Navy towers that provide fishing and diving opportunities.
Average depth for these wrecks will be 75 to 90 feet. We also have a live bottom ledge with depths of 115 feet. Typical dive season starts around the middle of April when water temps rise above 70 degrees. Water clarity is always a hit or miss. The further you offshore though the visibility becomes better. I have a fantastic group of friends who dive and we are always happy to take new friends along. We have had brand new divers up to highly certified technical divers out with us so experience is not a big deal but competency is.
