Good luck Shauno, I did the same thing just over a year ago, cracked my chassis in my original turbo diesel 80, bought a petty auto, and converted it to turbo diesel manual. I didn't get the luxury of swapping electrical looms over as the original 80's loom I had, had been hacked around that much, that it was "easier" or so I thought to adapt the petty loom to suit, trust me, that's a job you don't want to do. Best thing I did "while I was at it" was take the bare chassis and have it professionally coated at place (over here in Perth) that coats underground mine vehicles, that way every single bit of the chassis get cleaned and coated, inside and out, also I did a GVM upgrade while I was at it as the car needed engineering for the mods, so, kind of silly not to. Great series, please do plenty of vids, the memories of doing mine are coming back already, good on ya

Go through sooty and look at where it's cracked, beef those areas up right from the start. Relocate all of the wiring and everything electrical possible to be above seat height. Anywhere you have to have electrical lower down use waterproof plugs. Poor Sooty! Sweet find on the petrol (gas here in the states) model! I’d done a few diesel swaps here and you’re going the right direction! I wish we had all the good diesel models here that you have there! As for the build goes, on my recent build I put Herculiner on the inside of mine after I had taken the carpet out. I still put the carpet back in but it has really cut down on the cabin noise! I would say that the Raptor liner would do the same job!
Really sad to see Sooty being laid to rest, I have enjoyed greatly watching Shauno wield this magnificent machine in the most wildest places that OZ has to offer. Looking forward to seeing Sooty MK 2 build. Cheers to all the lads of 4WD 24-7 for the most amazing channel that's my happy place.
Building a car is hard work. Do it right first time around. Take the cab off the chassis. Sort out all your chassis mods, fabricate new cab mounts, install/weld in crush tubes into chassis under plates for bigger power steer boxes etc. Raptor paint chassis. Rear disc brake conversion and transfer case mounted hand brake usually go in together. Cab; prep body work and paint, raptor is pretty cool stuff. Install sound deadening on floor inside. Also, now is the time to decide if you like the colour of your dashboard and other associated interior plastics. If not use Duplicolour 'vinyl and fabric' paint. Clean and overhaul your air con hot n cold boxes. Overhaul/rebuild all the running gear. 👍 Raptor paint diffs, paint engine block and gearboxes white. - easier to spot leaks. Basically, rebuild and dummy fit nearly the whole car then take it all apart, then put it back together again. Great times to be had here, when I'm working on mine, I get up and down off the concrete floor something like 50 times a day. 👍👍
Chassis wash system to flush out the salt water, rust Protection, body mount plating. Put a fine tooth comb over the old body and see where it cracked and do a bit of preventative maintenance during the build. as well as plate over any superfluous holes
I'd strengthen what failed on the old sooty. The chassis, figure out how it twisted and toughen it up. Also the body mounts, see if there are some better aftermarket ones.
Please go 1hdt again! We hear all about 1hdtfe engines allllllll the time and they are great, be great to mix it up. Plus then I can have tips for mine 🤝
Very nice build! As for the interior, if that was mine I would not put a carpet nor sound deadening. Clean the flooring and spray bed liner in there. That way it will be easy to clean and mud will not accumulate.
I would LOVE to see a Hi-Lo series on 4WD 24-7. Two identical vehicles with one getting top end parts and other cutting all the corners. I vote Shauno get's the Lo!
Pore sooty both you and me and everyone else have had some great memories with that car like 6 years ago when you very first came out with 4wd action rest easy big girl 👍🤙
Raptor coat the whole interior, 2 seats & 12v system up highno where for mud to collect plus you can hose it out & get extremely tight door seals to keep the water out as much as possible Good luck 👍
He had the donor car for 7 months. I'd guess they knew that sooty wasn't sensible to fix for some time(either the twisted chassis or body cracks) once it's that far gone there's not much point doing more than the very basics to keep it moving until its convenient to take it off the road.
Man I can’t, cant, can’t wait to see the first walk around sooty mark II. I love sooty, first time I stumble upon the channel I got goose bumps listening to that rig scream. I’m a diesel kind of guy, I own two old mercs and just gives it so much character. I love all you guys, truly makes us laugh watching the show. Favorite part is watching the cooking part!! Cheers 🍻
Good to go on and check or change the heater and air con boxes while there's room. Also good to keep the diffs so you can see about swapping them to suit. Like one set lockers all around with manual hubs other set maybe just a rear locker and limited slip front with automatic hubs. Try out combinations while you have the spares available.

why don't you fix all the faulty things that failed on the old one, reinforce the body mounts etc. reinforce the chassis so it's not flopping around and tearing the body apart.
@@Dubst3pT3ch i'm not talking about fixing the old rooted chassis. i'm talking about fixing the design flaws in the new chassis and body so it takes longer to end up like the old one. because when this ones finished he won't be finding another one for 4k to run into the ground.
@@6226superhurricane keep in mind the last one lasted 600,000ks before all this had happened, and it had a very hard life to get to the state it's in so probably not worth it
Sooty was a fan favourite, just for the fact that it was representive of what most people actually use for offroading, and that most people can access a similar car for reasonable prices, not a shiny unrealistic car that no one can afford
Renew all the body mounts. Fresh rubber will help absorb vibrations etc better than old hardened ones. Reinforcing just moves the failure point somewhere else.
You could convert a aircon pump into a air compressor and fit it on the engine with a hidden tank anywhere so you always have air to go for air tools or inflating wheels. Can also clean and seal up a front or rear bar and put a tap on it for clean water or just water when you need it.
Goodday Ausie mates. Just a thought. Why not go completely left field and build an Iveco 4x4 double cab into an overlander / cruser complete with built in bed and not longer than 5.5 meteres total length. That would make fnteresting off roading in your usual outback trips.
37's! Sooty already owned the tracks compared to the rest and not too long ago you said it did perfectly fine on 35's so since it already getting rebuilt ya have to make it a bit better!
My off road vehicle is rather unconventional by the standards around here, but has taken me to some crazy places. It is a 1961 VW Kombi bus we call the Rustybus. I do an off road trip with friends every year called the Shasta Snow Trip. After 20 years doing that trip and others the body has been showing cracks like Sooty has and finally this year after a particularly challenging section of road I found that the frame had cracked all the way through behind the front suspension. It still got me to the next town (that consisted of a tiny country store and nothing else) where I managed to talk to the locals and found a guy who drove over in his Porsche out from the woods and TIG welded the frame back together, for free(I did give him some cash to say thanks), filling a gap of almost 1 cm or more. I then caught up with my buddies having only missed two sections of the route and finished the next two days of the trip. We added some plate steel to reinforce it after the trip and I hope to address the other little cracks before it goes the way of Sooty.
Thats a time were you think how lucky you are to see some parts of our country that alot of people can't. Can't wait to see Sooty.2, and hope is a Luxy.
I'd run all the electrics up top covered by headlining and no sound insulation or carpet, just rubber mats on floor. No rot in wiring then nd easy to clean out.
I still remember one of the episode, It's Shauno's 3rd attempt on Commando and Sooty just crawled up no problem.. Sooty will surely be missed but I can't wait to see the new and Improved Sooty MK2
Considering you do a lot of deep river crossing and mud bogging (which I'm sure will continue with Soothy Mk2), you should forget fitting carpet. Instead, why not use vinyl (or rubber) flooring instead (on top of the heat insulation & sound deadening).
Nice one shauno, exited for this series! Sad to see old sooty go though! You should definitely raptor the whole body again. But please PLEASE can you do a different colour? A gloss black maybe? Or even a gloss land rover forest green, would look great! Definitely think you should raptor line all your bar work again to, but just to bring that next level up, color match them to your car! I'm doing that with me new 2022 Jimny build.

Mr Whale and his 80 series have really put a smile on my face and inspired me to buy an 80 series as my first car (when I’m old enough). It was because of this car an 80 series is my dream. I’m sad and happy for you shaun and hope for the best. Cant wait to see the Mk2 of SOOTY
Here's a tip: Use antifreeze.
It helps a lot preventing corrosion.
Shawno, Hi from Arizona USA. Next time you get a wasp nest like that. Spray it with a mixture of Dish soap and water. Kills wasps faster than anything, stops them from flying and attacking you. Plus you won't risk catching anything on fire. I get about 3 nest a year around my place each summer and this works everytime.
I guess when you need a tough wheeler to go hard 4wding you switch to the obvious, Daryl.
Sooty is dead!!! Long live Soothy Mk2!!! Soothy you've given us many memorable wheeling. May you have a restful time in 4WD heaven. 🙏
RIP Sooty … what a legend … nobody is surprised with the damage !
Tip for fitting the GU steering box: upgrade to a GU chassis and body at the same time. Sorted 👍
Hi from tassie, I suggest bilge pumps in the vehicle for those soggy moments
Raptor paint diffs, paint engine block and gearboxes white. - easier to spot leaks.
Basically, rebuild and dummy fit nearly the whole car then take it all apart, then put it back together again. Great times to be had here, when I'm working on mine, I get up and down off the concrete floor something like 50 times a day. 👍👍
Sadist 😂
Another one bites the Soot(a desiel's "dust"). Also R.I.P. Sooty "rest in pieces"
RIP Sooty. You've been one heckava tough and dpendable rig. You will be missed 😢 But looking forward to seeing the Sooty Mk2 build. 👍
25:45 The more GU Patrol parts you put in the better!🤣
Salute - to a truck and driver that USED IT as intended!
Flipped front radius arms for more clearance and more flex 💪
Sorry for your loss mate. I could see it in your eyes and hear it in your voice early in the vid. It's tough loosing a member of the family.
i love the little stabs of the throttle and the look off "this dirty old petrol sounds alright" hahaha
Plus then I can have tips for mine 🤝
already missing the OG Sooty... is this one gonna be Too-sooty?
The slow and the sooty?
@@bengardiner4303 2 slow 2 sooty
"Too Sooty" is winning.
Great idea Jeremy
@@archmonks348 thanks arch
Yes sooty deserves it so much it's taken you all around Australia and back
For someone who changes their diff fluid every trip, think you should check some other things lol
Very nice build!
As for the interior, if that was mine I would not put a carpet nor sound deadening. Clean the flooring and spray bed liner in there. That way it will be easy to clean and mud will not accumulate.
Can’t wait to see sooty back on the tracks rolling coal
I would LOVE to see a Hi-Lo series on 4WD 24-7. Two identical vehicles with one getting top end parts and other cutting all the corners. I vote Shauno get's the Lo!
22:33 Remember to give that dash support a coat of paint.
Good way to prevent internal rust.
I believe the wiper assembly will be bare metal as well.
I cannot wait to see the rest of this build
Love from Turkey 🇹🇷
New drinking game - on this weeks video, every time Shauno says “bitter sweet” you have to skull a beer
Was thinking the same thing. Everyone will be pretty fucked afterwards 🤣
Take a shot for every um
Pore sooty both you and me and everyone else have had some great memories with that car like 6 years ago when you very first came out with 4wd action rest easy big girl 👍🤙
Always said an 80 with GU diffs, or a GU with a 1HDFT is the ultimate 4wd
Chuck GU diffs under it👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Its sad to see it like this
but we won't say goodbye
We'd say we'll
See u soon😊
Wish you all the best
Looking forward to it
Hydraulic brakes and steering damper assist would be sweet to have
RIP Sooty Mk-1....thank you for your services...🙏
I'd suggest a double GU diff conversion, double locked of course. Those things are strong!
Raptor coat the whole interior, 2 seats & 12v system up highno where for mud to collect plus you can hose it out & get extremely tight door seals to keep the water out as much as possible
Good luck 👍
gonna need a gvm upgrade to haul all that mud around
Gonna miss that old truck! What a weapon. I’d recommend reduction gears and vinyl floor. The rest you got under control. Cheers from Canada!
Shauno neglected this car too much. It was the best car on the channel!
He had the donor car for 7 months. I'd guess they knew that sooty wasn't sensible to fix for some time(either the twisted chassis or body cracks) once it's that far gone there's not much point doing more than the very basics to keep it moving until its convenient to take it off the road.
A ROPS cage would be a great idea.
The other thing I'd suggest is chassis re-enforcement, around all the attachment points.
Surely reduction gears and 37s for sooty mkii 🤓
Man I can’t, cant, can’t wait to see the first walk around sooty mark II. I love sooty, first time I stumble upon the channel I got goose bumps listening to that rig scream. I’m a diesel kind of guy, I own two old mercs and just gives it so much character. I love all you guys, truly makes us laugh watching the show. Favorite part is watching the cooking part!!
Cheers 🍻
Just a thought, wouldn’t it be cool if sooty mk2 was an auto. It would make sooty such a weapon.
He already has 2 autos very doubtfull he will build a third
Good to go on and check or change the heater and air con boxes while there's room. Also good to keep the diffs so you can see about swapping them to suit. Like one set lockers all around with manual hubs other set maybe just a rear locker and limited slip front with automatic hubs. Try out combinations while you have the spares available.
Reduction Gears and Portal Axles. This will make Sooty an absolute weapon.
You can sell stuff from her despite the condition or give away to fans so that she will always be remembered bro .... we'll miss her so much 😭😭😭 I'm sure fans will love parts from her with all of your signatures on it ....big love from 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹 TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
why don't you fix all the faulty things that failed on the old one, reinforce the body mounts etc. reinforce the chassis so it's not flopping around and tearing the body apart.
Rewelding a whole chassis and fixing those cracks is an incredibly time intensive project that requires a complete stripdown of the body to the metal.
The best possible mod to make is to sell the 80 series and buy a Mighty Triton
You'd have to be kidding
Renew all the body mounts. Fresh rubber will help absorb vibrations etc better than old hardened ones. Reinforcing just moves the failure point somewhere else.
Sad to see sooty go. Been watching you guys for years and sooty was always my favorite rig
Sound deaden the inside and bed liner the floor pan helps keep the mud out and clean up easy
Raptor line the interior floor . Lay it thick and it helps with sound deadening and you can put in som drain plugs so you can still clean the inside .
I did a big sad when the dirty 30 was retired. That being said the 30 mkII was worth it! Excited to see how old soot goes!
37's! Sooty already owned the tracks compared to the rest and not too long ago you said it did perfectly fine on 35's so since it already getting rebuilt ya have to make it a bit better!
Can't wait for Sooty mark 2....Good luck on your new built...cheers🤙
Hi, reinforce the parts of the body that broke and chassis so doesn't twist, raptor the inside so you can wash the dirt after a trip.
That's a good attitude. Reuse all parts you can from the good old Sooty to build the new one. Awesome idea!
Thanks for sharing the adventure of building Sooty mk II with us. Greetings from Suriname and the Netherlands
After watching Sooty for YEARS with dad, this video kinda makes me sad! It looks like you are heading the right direction with Sooty 2! I’ll be watching like I have since I was about 5! Keep the dirty side down!
Sorry to see Sooty go :( Been doing up a HJ75 ute with my dad and we’ve just pulled out the big 2H and we’re getting ready for a 12HT swap in. The 2H was the soul of the ute and it was sad when it broke down on the side of the road. Hope my build goes as well as Sooty mk2 does!!
I'm loving this already. Sooty mk 2 would look sick with dual snorkels loving it shauno can't wait for Sooty last trip aswell
Hey Shauno don't stress.. we won't stop loving Sootie. But can't wait to see what you do next mate.
