If anyone deserves a signature, It’s Jan. The dude along with focus pioneered speed metal way way before it was even a thing. He is such a versatile player its not even funny. One of the best to pick up a guitar for sure.
Possible reason the '54 Black Beauties are not a normal production instrument...........
Prior to the Pandemic I contacted the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop to have Humbucker sized AlNiCo Staple pickups made for my Les Paul.
I put my deposit down and then the wheels came off the cart!
It would seem the rectangular pole magnets used for the Staple pickups are very difficult to source.
Seymour Duncan has issues trying to source the small quantities for the very few staple pickups they make. And to be clear, I'm talking about the very long rectangular pole magnets than can be adjusted up and down. It is my understanding the smaller ones used for non-adjustable pickups are less of a problem to source.
It stands to reason that if Gibson was not able to source a large quantity of those magnets they would not offer the R4 Black Beauties as regular production instruments. It also may explain why the Robby Krieger '54 is available since it doesn't use the Staple AlNiCo V pickup.
Just my $,02 Cents.
For what it's worth there are a number of SD Custom Shop staple neck pickups for sale on eBay. I bought one last month and love it. The only downside is they require a very deep pickup route. Be prepared to remove a lot of wood as these pickups are certainly not drop in replacements for your average P90.
@@archieguitarz4700 Correct. Even the route for the original P90 sized Staple pickup are deeper than a normal P90. The mechanisms used to raise and lower the pole pieces are mechanical works of art.
Not to mention the very wide range of tones possible by using the pole piece adjustments to their fullest range.
I saw the Doors like 8 years ago the singer was 1 second insecure and it was truely a great concert 1meter away from a full time warp
@@misterghee1 Right On Gerard
Dave Meniketti of Y&T deserves a sig model. He's played a LP for 50 plus years.
Jan Ackerman is one Hell of a great guitarist. He deserves a much more widely advertised signature model. I know a lot of younger people don't know who he is but he should be heard. Thanks for this episode, I really enjoyed it.
The only thing I would change on those guitars is to have the binding on pick guard the same color as on the guitar body.
Finally some attention for Jan! What a monster player and lightyears ahead of his time. More guitarists should know his name!!
I live around the corner from Gibson Europe’s headquarters in Amersfoort. I’ll get you as many as you’re willing to pay for, and I’m able to carry, Trogly. Hit me up
He played a Framus that looked like a Les Paul so be careful.
Those framus he played are more iconic than his Les Pauls
Rik Emmett of Triumph also played one for years
No no, he was a very picky guitarist
After the guitar was put into production in 1975 he didnt like it and used his Gibsons
dAe GiBsOn bAd?!?1?
The Framus was a semi hollow
Great to see Jan get some love. Fantasticly creative virtuoso player!
Just noticed something about the JA75, it has the modern large, screw down tuner bushings on the headstock face.
The three (3) other types named after songs have the Gover Tuners using the small push-in bushings on the face of the headstock!
I think the smaller push-in bushings looks a lot nicer and provides a more vintage look.
The headstock of a LP Custom is already busy with the binding and pearl split-diamond inlay, the smaller bushings seem to really compliment the overs look.
Hey HK you rocked with Akkerman already I mean his music aah was working couple of times for his band
I've never had the opportunity to play a real burst but, I have had an opportunity to play one of these at vintage guitar shows, I love these the mahogany body with the ebony fingerboard gives a unique tone and feel
I can only agree. Played a few 54/56 Customs and they were all amazing. One of them was routed out for a humbucker in the bridge which was an actual PAF. The PAF paired with the neck pickup was just to die for.
Jan Akkerman is one of my All Time Favorites!
He had a Les Paul Personal re-topped to close off the routes for the oddly shaped low impedance pickup routes like Les Paul liked and the new top was routed for humbuckers. He had a limited quantity of these produced by Brandin guitars a few years ago but had since been discontinued. The Personal is still his #1 last I heard. I’m a big Akkerman fan so know a bit about it.
I love how they can make a R9 with a beautiful blue finish, but I can't even get a new Standard '60s in anything but boring bursts.
My favorite guitar player of all time is Rik Emmett, from the band Triumph. He played a Framus Akkerman for many years... Check out his guitar solo from the US Festival on UA-cam.
Agree, I rate Rik as one of the top 5 rock guitarists
Awesome to see a Jan Akkerman HOCus POCus "Signature" Les Paul with a Staple pup! Jan is such an essential guitarist. (If I was in UK I'd snap that beautiful SG up right quick but shipping to Canada in the days of 'fumblefreight' is a bet I wouldn't dare to take.)
...and they wouldn't send it to you, anyways.
That one live performance of Focus playing Hocus Pocus is the best with Jan playing the craziest solos on some weird Gibson singlecut. Forget which model it is
Jan released an album with a cover photo consisting of him and an acoustic guitar lying on a bed. The guitar has a woman's arm reaching out toward Jan. As far as I know, the title is just Jan Akkerman. It's funky and jazzy and kicks total butt!
I have this album and concur also. A jewel in the crown from 1977 for Mr Akkerman. Crackers, Angel Watch, Streetwalker...❤
I'm from the Netherlands myself and the marketing on these was actually quite decent. Even had some youtube ads on 'm. Absolutely love the look on these things!
Jan is such an underrated player, focus was so cool
I had first thought this was the same Les Paul he'd also played during Focus' performance on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' BBC show, but I just checked and _that_ one actually had a Gretsch Filtertron pick-up at the neck and a PAF at the bridge!
Another great pickup combination.
Those thin Filtertron pickups in the neck of a solidbody absolutely sing!
@@hkguitar1984 - Cool! 😀👍 I have absolutely zero experiences with those!
@@mightyV444 I really like the sound of a single coil neck pickup in a Les Paul, just the perfect combination of fullness and spank.
Tak Matsumoto has another NEW signature Les Paul, it’s a Gold Top & it came out yesterday(Tuesday) or Monday..
His 25/50 LP was re-topped by Wim Heins (Dutch luthier, sadly passed away in 2017)
Edit: Could also have been a Les Paul Personal, there was an article in the Dutch "Gitarist" magazine about the restoration. (many, many years ago)
Good old Gibson QC - even in a promo video they get the strings not sitting correctly @5:19 - details chaps, details.
Amazing guitar player Jan Akkerman from Focus.
I love that stripped down plain es 135 , if it had a trapeze tail piece it would be perfect
I guess we can all wait for the call from Gibson for our signature guitar.
Aail put yre awtowgraaph on zis for just a minor mille🙄
LOL, I've already designed mine.
Imagine a '54 Black Beauty with an all natural back and sides with only the top black.
It would have the pearl flower pot headstock inlay and a black ebony fingerboard with no inlays.
THAT is what I would call the perfect Les Paul (IMHO of course).
Extravagant. Another one I can't afford. I will wait for the Epiphone model.
@@stringlocker I would own many Epiphones if they would only change to a lacquer finish.
Every poly finish guitar I've owned has been a disappointment. I've guitars that I've owned for +25 years. The +25 year old lacquer guitars look great, honest play wear gives them a look of a well used tool.
The poly guitars that I've also played daily still look brand new except that the finish has dulled. I wish I'd stripped the poly finish guitar the day I brought it home so it could look as nice as the lacquer finished guitars.
Oh well, my current-self is disappointed at my past-self...............again!
I have stripped an Epiphone before. I have stripped many guitars so nothing surprises me. But I could not believe how much gunk was sprayed on that Epiphone.. I swear I almost quit and threw it in the garbage but I actually still have it to this day. Also you don't want to see what's under the paint. It took me days to strip that thing. I also have stripped a Gibson it took me 15 minutes to wipe the finish off with some stripease.
Cool guitar.
Did stagelights for a show of Jan Akkerman once. Management told me Jan sometimes would get annoyed with the lighttech and he would be vocal about it. Didn’t hear him complain so think we were good.
No Charlie Starr Signature Series Gibson yet?...lol
Yes that's a must 🙌
My “Artist Guitar” was a Rick Nielsen owned Explorer guitar from First Act (NOT the budget guitar people) It had neon pink binding and SIX lipstick pickups, all with individual volumes and tones! I traded it for my first Martin acoustic, a 000 28 herringbone with a 1930’s burst. And I was much happier!
I also years ago recall a photo of Jan playing what had been one of the Gibson "Low Impedance Pickup" '70s (Les Paul Professional?) Les Pauls with at least the neck pickup replaced by a regular Humbucker pickup.
I'd rock that guitar all day and night.
Franny Beecher sounded amazing on his. Maybe should have been a Franny Beecher model Les Paul Custom. His was a 1955 but same as a 1954. His had the plastic tuning pegs.
Jan Akkerman recorded a lot on Stoney Creek Guitars. A small guitar builder in Heiloo.
Can you do Guitar of the Stars on Jimmy Page's candy apple red top Les Pauls? The routed Deluxe and the mystery '50s one from '77 tour.
👍 Cool! A 54’ staple pickup custom is and will always be my dream guitar.
The real story behind his black LP is that he lend it to Framus. They were making a copy according to his specs and measurements. Unfortunately his Gibson got lost and Jan won't even hear the name Framus no more. They asked him for advertising Framus amps lately. He refused due to that reason.....
He has had a couple of signature guitars over the years…both of them kinda LP design.
Hagstrom Swede, and Framus AK.
That's a cool staple custom! I'd love to see you demo that one.the blue quilt top is a beauty
@7:39 - The D String out of the saddle hahaha - Attention to detail Gibson! Come on!
Prices in EU are always including tax. I never understood why in US it is different.
I couldn’t see the original video on Gibson TV with Jan Akkerman and his guitars, it’s clear that Gibson have been cleaning all register about this Guitar… I can’t understand it! 😢 😔
I would like to know more about his Les Paul Personal and/or Recording model. It seems like it was re-topped and re-finished to put humbuckers in instead of the usual lo-imp pickups.
JAN AKKERMAN SIGNATURE LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO
Around 1974 Framus created a Jan Akkerman signature model, semi solid with a f-hole and Les Paul shape in black and sunburst.
He had a Sunburst Framus 1976 semi similar to a 175 with with a 5 way verible switch gold hardware signature
7:39 is the D string out of the saddle ?
Nylon saddles are an interesting choice. but hearing him noodle around you can see they fit what he does. they probably take a bit of the ring out, but I think it's also for the feel. at some point I'll get tired of holding picks too.
I would absolutely love to be able to afford one of the 54 Custom reissues. I wish Gibson USA would make a similar guitar, like a black P90 Standard with black plastics. It wouldn't be quite the same as a Custom but as close as I might be able to afford.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Jan is Dutch, so that may have had something to do with inventory available in NL.
Good old detective Trogly on the case! Got to say you dig up some interesting stuff. Keep on keepin on!
Tried to hide? Hier in Nederland is de Jan Akkerman volop in de reclame op de socials
(Here in the Netherlands they have a lot of commercials running for it on social media)
Also why does it not have a staple pickup in the bridge ?
Old Jan is looking like the present moment Norm Harris.
I reallllly want a 54' custom, but they are sorta rare and always expensive, 30 years ago I had my filthy paws on a beat to hell 55' and was in love, but... didn't have $5k to drop on a guitar... price a 55' now lol. But also Jan's custom custom... with the skookum flame top and the extra fret? caught my eye... thought it might be a fake but?
They definitely didn't originally have nylon bridge saddles. But I don't think that one does either. They look plated to me.
Trogly the Jan Akkerman guitar your talking about in the next video was/is a gibson Les Paul personal that Akkerman had severely modded into an awesome Les Paul custom but you can tell from looking at it it's slightly bigger than a standard LPC
I love my black ES-135 with f holes and P-90’s. It’s like a semi hollow version of Jan’s Les Paul Custom. If it only had an ebony fingerboard with binding it will be perfect. Still, very comfortable and with an unique tone.
It's like Jan's Les Paul, just a fundamentally different construction...
In the Netherlands taxes are always included in the price
You need three things to buy the Jan Akkerman guitar. Passion for Les Paul, an address in the Netherlands and six thousand euros burning a hole in your pocket. I have two out of three. I don’t have the budget for this. Having said that, if our favourite Troggle wants one, I’d be happy to help, however that might work. Because I love this channel.
Can you document the original Jan Akkerman L5s guitar he played in Focus?
I had an 07 natural ES-135 with a trapeze tailpiece & I swear it had the mother of pearl inlay Gibson logo… I would have to look at pics. I traded it for a 2017 SG Standard because I didn’t know it had the quick connect PCB wiring…I’ve since been forced to re-wire it after the bridge pot or bridge connector in the switch went out completely on me with hand-wired 500K CTS Pots & PIO capacitors. I also swapped out the quick connect 57 Classic set, which were 4-wire, for the regular braided lead set of 57 Classic in the neck & 57 Classic Plus in the bridge.
Ever see a TRUE Jan Akkerman Gibson? It looks like a variation of the Les Paul Recording with the more rounded cutaway.
Flame top, no pickguard, hum-buckers and a a wrap tail piece. Seemed to be one of a kind.
He later had a three pickup version with a tune-omatic bridge and tail piece.
Hey Trogly, I live in the Netherlands, we could set something up to get you one of these if you want! Regards, Emiel
Great video.
Aloha and Mahalo. Always wanted a '54 Custom Les Paul
Great video I want humbuckers on my les Paul's except my 55 TV yellow special
Every dealer on the planet advertises that the '54 is on order. When has been the question 🤔
Saw a Wildwood spec'ed one on Reverb just yesterday and now this one . Sounds like the '22 / '54 reissue is on the way!!!!.🤞🙏👍🎸
Thanks Trogly for remembering such a childhood legend of mine ! Most underrated ,unappreciated, ecclectic player on the planet 🌏
Yes Austin
....I'm from the Netherlands and Jan Ackerman may have been a great name back in the day.....today he is more known for being a very complicated person depending on his Focus days. He played Frames Guitars for the most part. Love your videos.
I have a prototype Framus Jan Akkerman signature model that was never finished in the factory
@@mbontekoe3358 And what about the Jakkerman Catalist?
@@christmasmusicukulele8318 I purchased my guitar nearly 25 years ago without pickups tuners and electronics, it is thick bodied semi hollow with a thick carved natural spruce top, single F hole, it has small frets and very nice fret board inlays and an inlayed Framus logo on the headstock - in shape it does resemble the Catalist only many years older.
I purchased it a the gitaar show in Veenendaal
When Richie Blackmore makes a “greatest guitarist” list, you know the list is legit. (Partial sarcasm)
At his best Ritchie could outplay just about anyone. I was there.
Whatever you might think of him as a person or even whether you like his music or not, you gotta admit that 'neo-classical' style of his inspired a hell of a lot of famous guitarists.
The Warm Sky LP sold today, I am feeling mighty blue. 😿

I like the Es135, it's beautiful in it's simplicity.

Gretsch is making the staple P90 now!
The white on the pickguard didn't match the binding colour, so weird
Wow, Austin! You did it, man!
just as an aside the usa is the only country in the world which doesnt include taxes in their advertised prices. If you do that anywhere else it is considered falses advertising.
Grovers are valid, but 60s neck is questionable.

I am wondering that Gibson did no signature model of this one earlier, since there were ads in the seventies showing Keith Richards playing this model. By the way, I own a 54 reissuse from 1973..... after a professional refret a wonderful guitar.
For me alongside Jeff Beck and Django Reinhardt but the most versatile music wise of the three !
Love the staple pickup in the neck. Would've been on it if i wasn't in between roofs'.... Edit: Tbh i'd play the ES-135 non-stop & find a staple p90 to put on...
@The Trogly's Guitar Show Will you be picking up the MKH Origins LP?
Someone from the Netherlands here:
I've been seeing the promotional video as and ad before at least one in every four UA-cam video's I watch. They may have hid it from the American market, but they sure as what want Dutch guitarists to know about this model.
The ES looks weird. Think the neck is off crooked maybe.
He’s an amazing guitarists he really deserves it!!!
I live there and could theoretically send it to you. Do keep in mind customs and tax will add a lot to the price.
Really enjoyed this one Austin , Thank you can you get the blue one or the black one over here, you have friends over seas right?
Do the Troglys MtM!!
Great song and band
Love Jan he is such a great player. The Gibson Les Paul Custom Jan is known for playing ISN"T this new one it's a Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty with humbuckers that he later changed out the neck pickup with a Gretsch "Filtertron' pickup. Watch any of the old FOCUS video from the early days and you can see that guitar. Later he played a Gibson Les Paul Personal that was custom modded by the guys at Hamer Guitars. He had his own "Signature" guitar long ago, the Framus Jan Akkerman model which I understand he did not actually care for very much.
The names
Sylvia Janis A-nswers Q-uestions Q-uestions A-nswers and Eruption are all referencing focus songs
I never even heard of a staple pickup until I joined this channel. To me they're cooler than normal P90s. They should be offered more often in Guitar models
Yeah, Gibson developed the Staple Pickup specifically for Les Paul the Man.
Les Paul had been using the DeArmond Dynasonic pickups on his Gibson Les Paul guitars, he preferred those over the P90 pickups.
Gibson could not allow their flagship Player and Guitar to have DeArmond pickups so they copied the DeArmond pickup and produced the AlNiCo V Staple pickup.
The AlNiCo V Staple pickup uses a P90 sized winding with magnetic pole pieces like a Fender single coil pickup.
Normally a P90 pickup has a par of bar magnets under the coil. The P90 uses 2 of the same bar magnets a PAF Humbucker uses only 1 of.
The best way to describe the Staple pickup is a cross between a P90 and a Stratocaster neck pickup.
Guess who's a Staple V pickup Geek............................I'm guilty
@@hkguitar1984 I always appreciate your guitar knowledge. It's a nice addendum to the channel. The trogly community is a good one
@@Nothing-gv8mv Thank You for the kind words Nothing.
I've been fascinated by guitars since 1972, each year I find them more interesting than the last.
If you look at the earliest customized Goldtop Les Paul guitars that Les Paul and Mary Ford played you'll notice the cream P90 pickups look butchered and modified with little holes cut into them. What you are seeing are modified P90 covers that have been fitted over the tops of the DeArmond Dynasonic pickups. Les Paul the man loved those pickups and had to hide them under the P90 covers when he performed with his then new Gibson Les Paul guitars!
LOL, I'm sure Gibson management and marketing were having a cow when they found Les had removed the Gibson pickups in favor of the DeArmond!
@@hkguitar1984 Thanks for the Geek, all charges dropped. 👍🏻
@@Riverdeepnwide Very much appreciated Riverdeepnwide. ;-)

Most Dutch speak decent English!
Just the strength of the dollar compared to the euro would make this a decent investment
