This was one of the most enjoyable videos of someone talking about their guitars that I’ve watched in a long time. Maybe it was the quiet English accent, maybe it was the amazing vintage Gibsons. Either way, I’d watch this guy talk about guitars all day long.
I always appreciate a guitar player who shapes their tone by the considered use of volume and tone controls on the instrument. Lovely expressive playing, thanks.
I'm always reminded of a video with Joe Bonamassa in which he points to the control knobs on the Les Paul he's holding and says, "These are on here for a reason."
@@benjohnson4810 Lucky man! Wish I could watch it for the first time again. Try the first episode of BB - if it's your kind of thing it will grab you immediately. (Don't be tempted to start with BCS, despite the awesome Barryness if the theme tune)
I love how he's so passionate, incredibly talented and yet so humble. He makes it look all so easy, so I plug my guitar in all inspired...... and admire Barrie all the more!!
What a lovely guy and great player. I love how he goes after the cleaner fifties sound instead of the dirtier sixties and later sounds. Nice tone of voice and guitar.
Not only an incredible guitar player, but an all round top bloke too. Had the pleasure of seeing Little Barrie live before Virgil passed away and then chatting to the band afterwards. They were extremely humble and grounded.
I can’t believe 29 people pressed the dislike button. Barrie is a great player with a great sound and loves talking about his guitars, what is there to dislike?
I thought it was a Gretsch this whole time! Then I heard a Little Barrie song in season two, and I thought that was definitely the guitarist for Better Call Saul, and I guess I was right. I've been obsessed with that quacky tone in the Better Call Saul intro since the moment I first heard it.
I was in a bar in London watching Jim Jones doing a covers night with 'special guests'. Barrie walked in and a friend of mine who is a compendium of knowledge about music said, 'we are in for a treat tonight'. Barrie got on stage and was absolutely immense. A very nice/humble chap too.
Great sounds from wonderful old guitars. Has to be said that such a player would sound terrific even on a £99 Strat knock-off. Refreshing attitude he has, too, very much a musician rather than just a guitarist.
It's a sumptuous sound on JBL audio monitors. Except when he rests the 335 against his lavalier mic, LOL. Then he's all muffled... nice audio work on set I would say, overall.
That 345 reminds me a lot of my beloved black ES-347 of the eighties. These guitars are 'sleepers', 'cause you can get them fairly cheap and in my opinion the 347 is the best 335 type guitar Gibson ever made. Maple neck, ebony fretboard, some other upgrades and it has the single coil switch, so that makes them really versatile. I wouldn't trade mine for the world.
One thing I noticed about Barrie is when he starts a lick then gets half way in and just when you think his about to really dig in, he stops and talks😅...man play that thing! He is really good.
I'm a big Gibson fan as well, but the value of them has just gotten out of reach for a working stiff. They both sound incredible, and you are a great player and deserve them as you will record and perform with them and we can enjoy them for ever. Thank You for sharing
Having those two guitars, I feel like you could literally play anything you want and sound like a million dollars doing it. I have watched this video several times because the tones and the playing are so exquisite!
Really dig this video... and his playing. You can tell he loves music, he has a great knowledge on genres, and players. A student of the game ... very very kool 🙏
Cadogan can get more tone variety out of just an amp straight than I can get out of my helix. I suspect he could do the same magic whatever gear he was playing thru.
Barrie is one of the most unique guitar players in existence. Hes like, playing classic shit, but its weird and wacky in the best possible way. Such a fucking treasure
@@musicofanatic - the LP was officially designed for construction with lightweight mahogany in the beginning. In fact Les wanted the body woods reversed, maple with a mahogany cap and Gibson refused the request due to the extreme weight.
Rock Around The Clock was played on a Gibson ES-300 by jazz guitarist Danny Cedrone. He died shortly after recording RATC and was replaced by another jazz guitarist Franny Beecher who played the same model that Barrie is playing. The whereabouts of Franny's guitar is unknown so maybe Barrie's is Franny's and we just don't know it.
I've got an epiphone copy of that '55, it's one of my favorites, so many different tones inside. One day when this COVID mess is over and I feel safe enough to spend $200 I'll upgrade and put a real staple pu in the neck to make it more authentic.
When you have no idea who Barry Cadogan is and you're loving the video and then he plays the BCS theme and you're like, "Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!" :)))))
The gold-hardware guitars up through the mid-60s can have PAFs in one or both positions. The nickel-plated ones dried up in 1962, PAT# s are still great though of course.
Thats not totally correct. I have a 63 335 with a PAF in the neck. And ive seen many 63's in my time with PAF's, usually just one. But 100% by 64 they were gone
Yes, he wrote it and played it with that very same guitar. There's also a full song by now if you're interested. 'Better Call Saul' by Little Barrie - that's his band. One version you could find on UA-cam and the second (improved, if you ask me) version was recorded for 'Death Express', Little Barrie's latest album (2017). Top quality album.
Just perfect, an absolute joy to listen to. Many people think of a les paul as a rock hard machine, but a pair of paf’s can deliver much more than that. I mostly play my lp’s overdriven due to the repertoire of my band, but i enjoy it the most played clean on the verge of breakup at home. With the p90’s you get into the single coil chime land but with a wider spectrum than a fender, not the same thing tho, they have their own stuff going. Most importantly, when a guitarist like Barrie gets his hands on any guitar, the instrument shines at its best.
This was one of the most enjoyable videos of someone talking about their guitars that I’ve watched in a long time. Maybe it was the quiet English accent, maybe it was the amazing vintage Gibsons. Either way, I’d watch this guy talk about guitars all day long.
all of the above plus super tasty chops
@@sebbo1496 Yeahh Barrie iz TOP! :)

or maybe u fancy him. bit weird m8.
Same here. Barry is excellent. He actually mods his guitars to play em. He’s a musician not a collector 👍

I always appreciate a guitar player who shapes their tone by the considered use of volume and tone controls on the instrument. Lovely expressive playing, thanks.
It seems to be a lost art in the era of stacked over drives, channel switching amps and the like.
I'm always reminded of a video with Joe Bonamassa in which he points to the control knobs on the Les Paul he's holding and says, "These are on here for a reason."
I don't think i've heard of this cat before, but i like his playing and tone. Nothing better than simple, beautiful, taste in music & HOW it's played.
Johnny Marr recommended him to Matt Johnson to play in The The instead of him. Johnny couldn't do it because of his solo work. He's really great.
Never watched Better Call Saul then? :-)
@@slaterslater5944 Never. Haven't watched Breaking Bad either. I'm not sure why.

What a lovely soul he has...musical heart and mind.
8:52 "Better call Saul intro on that very guitar! Tasty!!
Dang, I definitely thought he played that on a Jazzmaster.

Thank you Guitarist ! You're doing an amazing job with this guy.
Maybe two of the coolest guitars I've ever seen. Guy has good taste.
A ‘55 Custom is my dream guitar, and that one sounds amazing.
Just saw The The last week and Barrie was playing like a legend!
Made the The The London gig for me last night. Exceptional guitarist
Saw Barrie play with The The last year with these guitars - fantastic player.
Me too, about 10 ft. in front of me at Brooklyn Steel. Blown away. Met him at the Inertia Variations too.
I’m really liking all of the guitar demos that I am seeing this guy do! What a great talent and he actually knows how to use the volume control!
My opinion the tastiest guitarist around,,,,,he has that bounce, when he plays....Great touch, great ear, great style....
I didn't know this guy before this vid, but I am amazed at his playing. Thanks for doing this interview, Guitarist!
never realized how good Barrie was, despite listening to primal scream all my teens, amazing
I just love re-watching this video. Incredible tones on dream guitars. Amazing.
5:26 that's exactly the sort of novice I'd love to become!!
Lol I know. What an asshole. I have been trying to figure that shit out for months and have gotten virtually nowhere.

Top East Midlands lad and one of the best players in the country.

Never heard of him, but he’s a incredibly talented guy and his tone is sweet as hell
The Leslie Paul is a tone rocket, its great to hear guitars played and operated by a talented guy who knows what he's doing 🚀👍
He wrote the intro to #BetterCallSaul !!! Awesome.
Makes sense after watching this video
(Wrote that message before he mentions and plays the BCS theme.)
My God, that 345 is do tie for!🖤
Was lucky enough to get hold a 55 reissue the neck pick up and blend is amazing for jazz.... so clear
That Les Paul sounds phenomenal. Nice player as well!
I don't know if there is a cooler guitar than a 50's LP Custom with yellowed binding. It just tells a story.
An old white LP Custom is cooler IMO.
