  • I wrote up an article on Instructables for this build! Link here: goo.gl/MqCPJB
    For this video, I wanted to go a little more in-depth about my finishing technique. I use General Finishes Arm-R-Seal in Satin and apply it with a foam brush. There are a few tips and tricks I have picked up to help get a smooth beautiful finish.
    This coffee table was a commission project and I am very happy with how it came out! The walnut has its flaws, but the cocobolo bowties and epoxy made it into a beautiful piece of furniture. I had a problem with the epoxy pooling in the tape at the bottom which means I wasted a few ounces. Next time I'll use some foil tape to hold the seal better and prevent this waste. Check out the affiliate links below to see what I used and help support the content I make!

    Man, black walnut is some of the prettiest wood I've worked with. I even like it more than a lot of the non-domestic / exotic stuff I've built with. It doesn't grow too much around south MS. I know of one black walnut tree that is so small, yet is way older than I am. I imagine the growth rings are SO close together on that old tree.

    I saw the little gaps around the bow ties that I fought for years. Here is how you can eliminate any gap at all. When you cut the bow ties leave them a 1/32 big and too deep, then sand a 2 degree bevel on the sides of it from the top side that will be seen down to the other side. that will leave a 1/64 too big bow tie at the very top on each side. When you pound them in, the top, or side seen, will be force fit to the gap and the other side, not seen side will be just right. No gaps and hold just like any other dutchman. It sounds like I am picky but when you make it as good as you did, it may matter. Nice job, I subbed.

    • @Hubbmade
      @Hubbmade  5 років тому

      It would be OK from a stability standpoint but it would also be overkill since most people do the bowties because they like how they look. If they were going to be out of sight you might as well recess a piece of metal under the table to make it simpler. Hope that helps!

    beautiful wood, excellent workmanship - ruined by some $4.99 ebay legs.

    • @thomastatum446
      @thomastatum446 4 роки тому

      How is it ruined? The purpose of hairpin legs is to not distract from the table top. Not meant to be a focal point. Not to mention, when selling projects like this, hairpin legs significantly reduce the price of the project for the client. Makes them much more affordable. Adding custom wood legs of equal material can double the price.

      @@minimin0425 I just depends on how big the crack is. With this slab I could have gotten away with no bowties but if the crack was any bigger the slab could shift after the epoxy is hard and it'll break loose. It doesnt even have to have a bowtie or butterfly shape. Some people do them on the bottom of the slab in a simple straight line for a 1-2 inch by 4-6 in board fits in. that would give the slab/epoxy enough stability.
