Making a Live Edge Floating Shelf with Hand Cut Bow Tie Inlays
Вставка

- For this project, I take a walnut slab that has a rotten end, an ugly squared-off chainsaw cut, and a few large cracks, sculpt it with some power carving, and cut some bow tie inlays to turn it into a live edge floating shelf. I think it is some of the cooler woodworking art I have done in a while.
I also show how I hung the shelf on the wall.

This is as pure and awesome as it gets. Simply very clever and artistic woodworking. And no liquid plastic!
I always drill down to just shy of the depth of the butterfly key so I can ensure I’m not going too deep and also take away most of the waste wood, saves the elbow grease. Good work, great video
I watch these videos to destress. Everything always works out right in the end.
I love the rolled over look on the edge, I am definitely going to use that effect
Some Great tips for getting the shelf up exactley wherew it needs to be. Thanks Brian
great tip with the 'story stick'. I have a shelf just about ready to mount and this will help a lot in that last step. thanks
You made a technical video, but what it reveals is that you are also a true creative artist, thinking about what would be right in showing off this piece of wood and justifying it's being there the way it is. That's rare!
I hope to see many more videos not just focused on technique (i love that, so keep it up), but also with some insight into your thought process, what it is that makes this piece of wood or this particular function interesting, and why you design it in this specific way.
Hey, I like this video a lot! It seems so much better when you tell us what you are doing. A lot of valuable techniques in this too! Great job!
Great tips again Brian, I love the story stick trick. Also those bow tie lessons are just what I am looking for. I've managed to get my hands on 7 curved slabs of live edge oak about 6ft long 2' thick. They kind of curve through 90 degrees, so I am planning on making a small staircase in the corner of our kitchen. I want to incorporate these details into the project. Thanks for the vid.
This video was an awesome combination of clever techniques (the way you used the story stick on the wall was genius IMO) and a well crafted, aesthetically unique and beautiful design. Nice job!
As a lover of timber and woodworker all I can say is awesome dude.
Beautiful work
I just mounted one two days ago. Thanks for the screw leveling trick👍❗️
Good job on the shelf it looks great, I like how you cut it on an angle that that made it look really cool.
Cheers

Very nice video. Nice blend of hand and power tools. Very authentic. I really appreciate woodworkers with your approach.
Superb work, Brian. Love the battle droid sculpture!
That was an excellent project with a log of great mounting tips. Thanks for sharing and keep the videos coming.
Hi Brian I have watched lots of floating shelf vids but this is the best by far great tips thankyou👍
Beautiful piece of work.
The elusive vocalizations of the rare Brianus Woodworkeriuous Benhamus is finally heard on youtube. Truly marvelous.
Nice look Brian!
That is gorgeous!!
That came out beautifully
Excellent project and very well executed
"Build it like Benham" - my newly adopted mantra. You sir, are good.
Thanks for the awesome ideas. You've just made the future bright for quite a few of the "what the heck could I even use this one for" slabs in my shop.
Very nice. Love that Mounting Hardware.
My goodness young man, that is a fabulous piece of work, a masterpiece. Should sell for at least $600-$800 if you wanted to sell it.
Nice job brother, I’ll have to remember if few of your tactics, pretty slick👍🇺🇸
I'm rather impressed. Preparation is key. 👍
Well done amigo and thanks for the pointers. Stay humble
A beautiful work. Really awesome. Please, spend a little more time showing the final result. Nicely done! :)
Belo trabalho, parabéns!!!
Awesome shelf Brian :)
Great work, it fit perfectly. Like that it just slipped into place with the last push and sounded solid. Makes a normally dead space come alive!
Looks awesome!
Very nice work dude.
Thank you. I learned a couple of things AND I subscribed to your channel. Keep posting!
Very nice Brian, Sometimes those funky rotten boards are the best!
very nicely done!
Beautiful!
Beautiful job
See now this is good. Artistic and practical, unlike that bench project you made.
Sick shelf!
Beautiful. Looks like something out of 'Myst'
That’s awesome!
Very cool video! I’m thinking about building a similar shelf for my house. :)
Great work.. James King Sent me to your site... Im now a new subscriber... keep up the videos .. thank you
Hermoso trabajo
WOW man, that's a super job ! You got a new subscriber (:
Just once I'd love to see someone do something like this without massive workshops, industrial size planers & tools mere mortals can't afford.
Awesome Job and very easy to follow your thoughts thru the Project to the finish.
Love the leveling Screw Idea However won’t it push the top edge away also ?
Thx’s for a Great Video !
I’m Hooked n Subscribed.
Po prostu mistrz !
Well Done Sir
Great finished shelf. Some great techniques. Where did you get the floating mounts from?
What finish did you use on that?
Dude you are a genius.,
Wow, you have a lot of great tips here! The craft paper & story stick are really good ones I'll tuck in my hat. Thank you, @HoneyOnWales
Very Cool.
I like UR style! 👍👍👍 ....Subbed!
My cat would go bonkers trying to get over to that shelf to play. I found him hanging from a fan one time totally freaked me out. Wonderful use of a neat old piece of wood.
Handsomely !
Very very nice what's the name of those mounting brackets ..
Very nice
Sweet
How did you do the finish and what products did you use?
👍👍👍
Fantastic job.... Have you ever done those "bow ties" in any other shapes like a butterfly or something?
The basic premise is that the crack has to pull against the shape and long grain of the bow tie. So really any shape that recreates those conditions should, in theory, work.
Where’d you get that mounting hardware?
Any reason you didnt just use some wood hardener for the rotting parts?
Great build, but instead of using that compass.
Put the board against the wall, and run the pencil along the wall, it will put a mark on the board as the pencil follows the wall.
A carpenter’s flat pencil would even be better.
what is the piece that is attached to the angle grinder
😍
..is that for collecting dust ?
I'm not sure I understand the leveling screws in the back. The shelf came out beautiful though
Great job. A little longer or more views of the final piece next time please.
Brian, that turned out great! I did a floating shelf on my channel recently and I see we both had similar ideas but different paths were taken. Wish I had the hardware you used, had to make my own out of lag bolts. If you get a chance check it out, it’s called “floating mirror shelf”. Awesome job brother!!!
Thats a nice slab for a shelf like that and a great idea with the screws I'm gonna remember that one. How do u like the wood river block plane? Does it Hold an edge good ? Been thinking about getting a new plane have a good one bro
Brian Benham I know what ya mean I have a 10ft long 15" on one end amd 21" wide on the other end slab of cherry for 2 almost 3 yrs now 8%moisture wife wants a hairpin leg bench and me to build a cherry table foir dining but There's not much to it when using hairpin legs that that was kind of boring in the slab is pretty nice To just use hairpin legs could make a couple of shelve out of it though And thanks for the feedback on the Wood River plain think that's my next hand plane I like the black and stainless steel colors also
Brian Benham Its adjusta le and low angle right?
Brian Benham yes!!! GOOD IDEA 🍻
I tried saying they're expensive just for some skinny bar legs but she didn't care and sd no they're not lookm how much ur wood costs..so this is perfect
Brian Benham 🍻 I think ur suggestion just might work..I'll have our daughter tell her too..nothing like a 17 yr old tellin ya something is outta style. Hahah!
Brian Benham ok cool and that's good to know..no way around it huh??
woah
Ikea Boss level
Awesome video! (Until the cameo by Jar Jar at the end!) :)
With all due respect, your camera / lighting does not do your work justice. The thumbnails are simply stunning.
who else thought that was a bong on the shelf at the end
I don't get it... What are the "bow ties" for?
Brian Benham Good Stuff! Thanks for the quick response. :-D
If I were to use the bowties just for the look, would I have to inlay them as deep? I was wondering if I could go like 3/8 deep to save chiseling work.
M lol

What's not to like about this ...
Probably people jealous about youtubers tools. Especially when they see Festool. It definitely gives me the itch to upgrade something.
No.
all that work for a couple stupid items....WOW
