Justice album and '89 tour is the epitome of the ultimate Hetfield voice
OOOOOOOOHHHHH YEEEEAAAAAAAH!!!!????
Respectfully James' true vocal talents came to fruition with Load
@@matthewbailey376 lol they’ve even said they deeply regret that garbage
Agree
I also agree .... less studio magic raw and real
I love the 80s James. He was full of Energy and Aggression.
“I was never taking lessons… …The more I sang the better I got,” - James Hetfield. Those are some powerful words coming from the vocalist of the highest selling heavy metal band of all time. That truly speaks volumes about the importance of commitment, perseverance, and hard work. Dude admitted that he couldn’t even sing, but he became the greatest frontman of all time because he just kept singing and eventually got good at it.
Bro
I love James as much as anyone but greatest frontman of all time is groupie talk
@@jlobiafra I’m speaking in terms of ticket sales. In regards to who is the greatest frontman, that honor would probably go to Robert Plant, McJagger, Ozzy. I would definitely place James Hetfield in the top fifty.
@@suicidaleuphoria7012 I have no problem with any of the names you mentioned but gene Simmons????
It's also worth nothing that it is NOT advice. You can destroy your voice singing like him, and should get lessons if you plan to sing in an agressive style like he does
Anyone who's listened to every album knows the different stages of maturation that James's voice has went through. To me they all sound good. For most aggression, I'd say AJFA was the peak, and the Black Album was the start of rasp+singing, but also when he was battling the blowing his voice out more often, hence the lower "singing" with the Loads. I will say though that in the last couple years, James has found away with his older "mature" voice to find some wider range again and decent control of his voice with a little more rasp back in it. Deeper, but dynamic. Not sure what his new secret sauce is but his voice on the live performances has seemed pretty consistent lately.
I started singing lower in my normal chest voice thanks to James hetfield
The loads were the voice crack era. He could barely make it through a single song without cracking back then. Most people were just good sports cause they knew he'd been screaming for over 10 years without technique by that point. He is a bit better now but he still goes full yodel at times to compensate for his irreparably damaged vocal chords.
His screams were insane on KEA and he was viscous on AJFA. But his singing on fade to black or sanitarium showed he had a good clean voice back then too. Would have been nice if he could have maintained that
Playing in half a step down helps tremendously too. They sound really good these days
But listening back, you can’t help but chuckle a bit, there was no depth to his voice. The funny thing is we thought he was positively demonic!👹
⚡I especially love his voice on Lightning, specifically the chorus to Trapped Under Ice to name a few ⚡
Exactly!!
Foooorever Mooooore~
yeah, i also love his voice in Kill em all, especally in whiplash. It always gives me energy and adrenaline when listening to that album!
James helped me realise playing guitar whilst singing was best for nervous frontmen you don’t have to worry about jumping around, dancing and trying to be sexy like DLR or Axl Rose
And during the instrumental sections you’re not standing like an idiot or slapping a tambourine to feel like you’re doing something Just focus on your guitar until you’re back to singing
I love James' voice on every record. 🎤 🎸 🤘🏼
Yes Mikey, we know, we know... you even love the crappy albums!
@@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS Opinions vary!
@@MikeysMorgue Oh yeagh.... crud.
Bro I see you on every video 😂
@@MikeysMorgue I don't understand why people get so hung up on others who like the "crappy" albums. 😂 I wonder if they would actually try to dictate people's lives in person. "No, you're NOT going to listen to this!" Totalitarians, man. Don't ever give them an inch for anything.
The early Metallica demos had James attempting some vocal gymnastics on quite a few songs. By the time they recorded Kill Em All he dropped the high end completely and just went for a more punk aesthetic which was more Lemmy-esque delivery wise (and less pretentious). Which fit the music better and made them more uncategorizable in a sense. Hard alcohol did the rest.
Dropped the high end? What about Whiplash? Or hit the lights.
I love that he acknowledges the yeahs XD
"I did a little bump at the end."
I am sure they were all doing bumps back in the day. 🤣
🤘
For vocal i choose, RTL and MOP , The peak of Hetfield, all thrash , raw, strong powerful straight from vocal chord.🤘💙
The first 2 Metallica records was like listening to a teenage metal band. When MOP came out he had a noticeable maturity in his vocals which were to me peak years for his voice. Load and Reload his voice was less aggressive then the late 80s but still not bad.
Actually Ride The Lightning is already showing maturity especially Fade to Black.....
Teenage metal band? You’re tweaking
AJFA is peak Metallica. Everything from the riffs, the vocals, and everyone's hatred towards Jason is undoubtedly the strongest point in their career!
I'm absolutely certain that the "hatred" for Jason has been completely exaggerated by the Internet crowd. Hell, y'all already refuse to stop bringing it up, much like other parts of history, and you all revel in such miserable negativity. It's like you're all in love with being full of resentment. And you all need help.
if only AJFA had bass tho
@@houseofpancakes379 Even without bass, I consider AJFA to be their best album. If AJFA did have bass, I would literally nut myself. The whole album would be 5 times better, especially since Jason's bass tone is groovy asf. I do believe there is a version of AJFA on youtube that does include the bass, which is pretty cool.

This is the album. You're welcome btw.

No one hates Jason. No one who isn't an idiot. Jason kept the band together and got shit on for doing it. He's the ultimate performer and an incredible bass player. Metallica has had three legendary bass players in a row. Now, if Lars and James would ever let them be heard...
"I did what I could" and you did it pretty well, specially the And Justice Era
I liked his 80s voices
Imagine singing while playing the badass riffs, Hetfield is fucking legend
Master of Puppets was my favorite Jaymz voice, he started getting the growls and the "yeaheahhhahhh" going after that.
James hetfield ASMR
"I do a little yeahehhh at the end!"
unique voice.. i dig it 🤘🎶
James' voice became lower as time went on. I think Master of Puppets is very noticeable as far as maturity. I don't know if was the drinking he did or the constant road tours but it's very noticeable and his voice just kept getting lower with And Justice For All, The Black Album and the Load Albums and everything past that. Even Steven Tyler's voice deepened when singing " Dream On" on the regular versus the album where it's higher in pitch. There's really no way to stop it unless you have started with voice lessons , voice training with constant care and drinking lots of lemon tea and rest. I think James has been lucky to not lose his voice without any care and voice training. There are lots of singers who have lost their voice permanently because they didn't take care of themselves.
lemon tea?
You'll lose your higher range regardless of how well you take care of your voice. You vocal folds just become less elastic with age. You're not going to find people in their 70s who sound the same as in their early 20s.
You can certainly lose more range if you don't care for your voice though.
Completely agree
Sing along just A couple of Metallica songs and You’ll notice how hard is. And then Imagine you’ve got to do it two hours A night several evenings a week.
The man’s got A strong voice.
@@Me04120 The drinking and smoking definitely played a part, I'm sure.
James Hetfield is one of those who has aged gracefully. His style and voice only keep getting better with age as well as his stage presence.
His voice got way worse in the early nineties after touring too much and it never recovered. You’re just a fanboy I guess. Impressive how well he can still sing at his age though
I used to think i was the only one who thought his voice during the justice tour was at its best. I used to love watching the seattle 89 show more than the san diego 92 show or cunning stunts.
Don't sleep on the Woodstock 94 show. Holy shit is it phenomenal.
@@arsxxmoriendi on my playlist. Any time they play breadfan live is a treat.
No way bro. Kill ‘em all and ride the lightning are my favorite vocal albums.
In the bridge part of Escape James does Black Album era vocals and then reverts back to Ride The Lightning vocals for the remainder of the Album.
I thought the singing on Kill 'Em All was terrible but the songs were so damn good I wore out the album.
Yeah?
YEAH?
YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAH.
For whom the bell tollssssssa
Lightning, master, and justice in my opinion were his finest years, although he probably disagrees. It was about the intensity and attitude his sound represented.
Just imagine both justice and The Black Album with Lightning vocals.
0:30 I love The Young Ones T-shirt. Hetfield had taste. :)
Holy shit! Can you imagine Het putting down the guitar for good in those days?
Love the honesty and humbleness. James rules!🤘🏻
yeah, with all of their interviews, documentaries, movies, and songs, you can really see a lot of Jame's story. which has been extremely tough considering what he has been through, and ultimately he's this guy who can look back at himself and laugh at it while doing charity work and stuff. so much transformation.
I can see how he hated the early days of his vocals but I dig em, No Life Til Leather captures early Metallica perfectly
Wasn't that when James was still trying to imitate Diamond Head's vocal style?
@@Kruegernator123 was he trying to, or was that just how he sounded at that point?
A lil “ yeaheah” was my singing! Perfect sounding voice for thrash in my opinion! My Favorite vocalist but certainly not the best ! Huge difference
I remember hearing some early Metallica demos and thinking "wow I didn't know Dave Mustanie sang back then. My mind was blown when I found out it was James. Then I heard that 1st demo, Whiskey Audition Tape I think who the hell is even that because it can't be James!
PURE LEGEND! HE'S THE ALMIGHTY HETFIELD! LOVE HIM OR DON'T!
the weird thing is his vocals were higher on the demos. His voice is lower on Kill em All but gets really high again on the Ride demo.
That's because they're not edited like the album. Also better microphone in a studio versus your home.
For me RTL was my favorite In terms of voice.
His vocals sound more intense on the early albums
Yeah!
great thumbnail
Well they finally dropped!
lmao @ your thumbnail. 😂
Sh!t his kill em all and ride the lightning voice was awesome I grew up on that sh!t!!!!
Just like everything else. The more you do it, the better you get at it.
Greatest frontman in metal. Hetfield is *the* metal god.
No he’s not. There is only One True God (The Christian Holy Trinity). Besides that’s the diabolical nickname already given to Rob Halford of Judas Priest, who even has a song of the same title.
@@RapidCycling07 Thank you
@@RapidCycling07 The "holy trinity" isn't even Biblical. It's a Catholic doctrine that isn't true at all. Baptisms need to be performed with full body submersion and only one name mentioned -- Jesus Christ. Baptism in titles is counterfeit.
The thumbnail makes me laugh harder than it should
Much as I love the older singing, songs like All Nightmare Long hit even harder.
Very interesting.
He struggled to decide between singing and playing, and ended up being one of the best to do both at the same time.
🤟
I think he’s referring to the Power Metal demos.
👍
His vocals were perfect for each of their classic albums. Kill 'Em All was chaotic and raw, and his vocals matched that. It sounded like they were having a fucking blast. Wouldn't change a thing.
I still can’t believe this is the same band that made re-load and lulu
His early vocals were the epitome of thrash metal!!!
It’s called being a kid when he sang on kill em all lol. by the time Justice was recorded he was a grown man
I liked James's voice on the first couple of Metallica albums. Reminded me of the NWOBHM stuff they were influenced by, and I think that is pretty cool. I also loved his voice through the next few albums, but once he started just doing straight melodic singing, I was kind of bored.
I seen them on the Justice tour, i tuned out after that. I still listen to; kill em' all, lightening, puppets, garage days and justice. I've heard the rest... the vocals on anything post justice is the least of the problems.
to sum it up best, as far as post justice Metallica music, i have to quote the great Torben Ulrich - "Delete that!"
right
0:14 hahah 😅
"YOU KNOW"
Helsinki 1988 is his peak voice imho. That and early 1989 shows.
The video ?
Next drunk game: take a shot every time James Hetfield says "you know". I just counted 19 lol
Dude every metal band had higher pitched singers back then
James isnt a great singer in the classic sense, but he is a great vocalist.
"No band has made it like that" Dude you defo made it like that.
Yes, influenced players everywhere to pick up the guitar and sing. Even metal bands that came after Metallica like Opeth, Machine Head, Death, etc would've had some kinda influence to do both roles.
@@loganpriest6029 if you seriously think James Hetfield is the first person to play guitar and sing at the same time your deluded.. never heard of Eric Clapton, Jim Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn??? The list goes on and on and on
@@nemesis8626 woah settle down, did I say that? No
I think he sung better at that time then he does now.
James is a fucking legend
yeah his vocals did sound a little low key on the first 3 classic albums then on justice for all they where thicker harsher now unless he did not go through puberty until his mid-20s which would be unlikely i have no reason for this
His voice was better in the beginning way better
Between Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets, James's balls dropped more than a million miles.
He looked Like Onlyjayus when he was young
No band had made it like that….KISS did?
Loads of bands made it like that, look at blues, classic rock, I could probably name easily 100 bands or musicians that had already made it like that
He just doesn't give himself the credit he deserves.
I think if you ask most Metallica fans which James voice they prefer and they will say the Kill them All through Justice for All era. All to All so to speak.
Antes do Lemmy e do James, os vocalistas cantavam como mulheres e se vestiam como mulheres, não era o rock e o vocal que eu busca no rock, Theo best heavy Band of The time, forever Metallica, for those about rock, we salute you, James Theo best heavy Sing and faster and thrash
could someone explain to me the biblical things on attitude?
nvm googled some
I probably would have taken Metallica more seriously back in the eighties if they had had John Bush at the helm. All of the great singers back then made Hetfield sound a bit more like a punk singer.
Hetfield=Metallica
Just think of it: those guys have been into their music, shows and so on all their lives, since adolescence! If they wanted to start earlier, they should have started it when still in diapers.
Woodstock 94 was hands down Metallica's BEST performance
Nah ride the lightning and master of puppets
@@truthhurts79 The fuck you talking about.. Im Talking about LIVE Performances, not albums
I mean… he was a kid lol. That’s all
Nice one who is she
BACK WHEN HE WAS GOOD.... I STILL CANT LISTEN TO ANYTHING AFTER MASTER OF PUPPETS...
i prefer current james over screaming james from younger era
unpopular opinion: his voice before 1985 was " meh" at best
I think his vocals were too drowned in reverb before MoP but I still really enjoy his performances.
Is that really an unpopular opinion? I think most would agree that what you're hearing on AJFA/Black Album is the "real" Hetfield. On the early records he sounds laughable. In my own little world, I always thought that was the consensus.
Never mind the voice, what about the evolution of his appearance?
Went from cute boy to studly man to absolute daddy.
Most men go through that transition. Used to look like a boy at 20 and i look like a studly man now at 28.
Personally I say his voice At it’s best from black to load and reload.
Ironic that was his best voice to me
James mentioned the poster of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry and how he wanted to be them. I think he’s a better singer than Steven Tyler and a better guitar player than Joe Perry.
Its funny how a guy like James didn’t take lessons but just do it and with hard work becomes successful, and others spend years on music college ect and spend thousands of dollars and don’t achieve a career..
I should have thought different when I first started out .. waist of money !
They first sounded more like Diamond Head. I know they played their songs but their style was in that vain.

“Is it a woman or a man.” Bob Seger
Metallica first 3 albums were the best
Oh shut up. The voice was epic back then.
After the black album it all went down the crapper.... James thought and still thinks he can sing.....
What's with the title? He is a male...
Maybe pay attention to the video next time, James literally says "who is she?"
