Whether people want to admit it or not, Ride, Master and Justice have some incredible playing from Lars on them. One of the things I loved about his playing back then was that he was was quirky. Meaning he would break up beats with tom and cymbal accents. Listen to Battery for examples of this. He also used the double bass triplet to great effect. And, the fact that he was playing to some of the most incredible riffs ever composed just made his stuff even more interesting. Hats off to you, Lars.

I'm also one of those who don't understand the hate bandwagon on Lars. What are they hating on exactly? His drumming? I admit he isn't one of the greats when it comes to sheer drumming skills. But he did great with what he's done with Metallica. All their classics are very memorable because of his drum parts. The first 4 to 5 albums pretty much showcased how good he was. No one was ranting "Lars sucks" when AJFA was released. Give credit where credit is due. All these trendy hate started when they supposedly "sold out" right around after the black album went out. People fail to realize that at that point in their career they've essentially achieved everything. Nothing left to prove. They became the greatest metal act the world has ever seen. From that point onwards, they can pretty much do whatever they want. And so they changed their music a bit. Reinvented themselves. After all of that, their subsequent albums are still chart toppers and still selling millions. Lars is now nearing 60. It's just natural to have your skills diminish as you age. It's easy to hate on Lars when he's playing Fight Fire with Fire now than when he played it 38 years ago.

Honestly I think a lot of it comes from the Napster ordeal, and Dave Mustaine. So people started looking for ways to criticize him. I don't get it. Most people I know who hate on him don't even really like metallica. He's a solid drummer. And I'd take him over many other thrash drummers. Frankly because they way overkill that cliche double bass. A lot of what metallica wrote is not easy to play. Fight fire with fire is a good example. They should pay more attention to what they are actually doing on their instruments.

Personally I thought the drumming on AJFA was one-dimensional, and lacked any sense of nuance, except for TFEOS and EOTB.
Also apparently the drum tracks required a shitload of tape splicing editing, and seemingly (to my ears listening to the isolated tracks), acoustic triggers to get a consistent sound.

The problem is that he makes the tempo oscilate all the time. Try to listen to Iron Maiden for ex or another big band and you will see that they feel more consistent, like the song is going in a fixed rythm. With Metallica it feels all over the place. The way he hits with both hands and feet are wrong as well, it sounds amateur, his feet doesnt have the same strenght and consistency between legs, his fills (usually with snares) are kinda cringe as well, just sound bad. For those that are musicians and understand about drums we can notice these mistakes all the time and it eventually starts to bother. To other ears it all may be invisible, but it is very very annoying. Usually bands of this level have professionals drummers that dont do any of these mistakes. When the drums sound bad the entire song can sound amateurish because everyone is following the drummer. Kirk doenst help as well missing notes all the time. Trujillo and James are the only musicians on the band that have a flawless performance live.

This attitude of his along with the unbelievable chemistry with James is no doubt why they're so successful. Every aspect of their playing compliments the other peefectly. His ear for arranging songs and hearing them from the listeners perspective could well have come from him just playing along to his favourite songs and feeling things out for himself. As much flack as he gets, there is no doubt that he's the best and only drummer Metallica could have ever had. It seems that most modern metal drummers try to play their drum set, how a lead guitarist would shred up and down the neck, except instead of a solo, they play like that through the entire song. I’ve always liked that Lars was never afraid to play a simple beat. Take Enter Sandman for example, just a simple kick snare, kick snare 4-4 beat, but the song doesn’t need anymore drums in it. Skank beats have a kick-snare-kick-snare pattern. Blast beats have consistent snare-snare-snare-snare etc. as 16th or 32nd notes. There are usually fast double bass drums along with blast beats, but they don't divide the snare hits like a skank beat. Lars was doing skank beats just fine on AJFA. And I kind of share his enthusiasm in finding my pocket as a guitarist in the whole mix... like, knowing when to lean back and when to fill the space.
I see myself building drum tracks very much like Lars does. I'm not interested in the super technical stuff a la, say Joey Jordison or, let's say any modern metal drummer out there. It doesn't seem to support the song as much as it is about just beating the shit out of the drums.

Some are certainly technical super stars, yet others might be more limited but are very musical and come up with quirky interesting parts and collaborate well. There is no set formula..music is art ultimately and thus anyone can rise to the top so long as they have something unique to “say”.

The album's mixer, Steve Thompson, said that it was Lars that insisted on dropping the bass to an inaudible level and that Hetfield just went along with it. And here we have Lars admitting he wanted to 'push the drums into the foreground' during this period.

  • @B_R_

    Simple doesn't mean shitty.
Lars has made millions being an adequate drummer in a popular band.
His playing on the song "One" got everyone's attention, but It's the band's songs and his personality that made him famous, not his drumming.
I don't agree with all of his opinions but that has nothing to do with his playing.
He found his own way to make a career, and it really doesn't matter if he was formally trained or not.

When I listened to Metallica's first four albums especially, I was in awe of the drum rolls and fills and cymbals l crashes that he wove into so many of their songs.
